Reid Trophy stays in Scotland, thanks to Bradley Neil

FROM THE ENGLISH GOLF UNION WEBSITE
Blairgowrie's Bradley Neil ensured the Reid Trophy stayed in Scotland when he won the English Boys under 14 Championship at Hesketh, near Southport earlier today.
A closing round of 75 for 218, two over par, gave him a four stroke winning margin over Geordie Jack Hermeston, who closest with a level par 72, and six shots ahead of the rest of the field. His victory means he follows compatriot Euan Scott as champion following his victory at The Kendleshire a year ago.

“This win means so much to me,” said Neil. “I so wanted to follow Euan as champion while I also wanted to add the English Championship to my Scottish under 14 title. I don’t think anyone has held both titles in the same year and I don’t know if anyone has led from start to finish. But I came here this week with a record to set and I’ve achieved that."

Neil’s closing round was anything but straight forward. Despite starting with a three-shot lead, he got off to a shaky start and was three over par after five holes.

“Thankfully I birdie the eighth but I also bogeyed nine when I found I was only one ahead,” added the young Scot. “But I had nine pars on the back nine and it was one of those days to make pars. At the start, with a three-shot lead, I knew that if could make pars the rest would have to make birdies to catch me.”

Johannes Schwab from Austria came closest to putting Neil under pressure but when he four-putted the 14th green and bogeyed the next, his fire was extinguished. In the end Schwab shot 76 to finish joint third on 224 alongside Ashton Turner from Lincolnshire, who closed with 74, but Hermeston came through to take second place with his 72 for 222.

Hermeston, 14, a member of the City of Newcastle men’s team and of the Northumberland under 18 side, found history repeating itself as he finished runner-up to Neil in the Scottish under 14 Championship.

The under 13 title went to Max Martin from Copt Heath, equal fifth on 225 after a closing 77 with Haydn McCullen from Didsbury, ironically last year’s under 13 winner, who chipped-in at the last for a 78.

Tiger Woods can do no better than a 74 in WGC-Bridgestone Invitational

Bubba Watson (64) sets early pace at Akron

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Bubba Watson established an early clubhouse lead as the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational began in Akron, Ohio.
The American birdied four holes in a row from the 11th in a six under par 64 at Firestone to sit two shots ahead of compatriots Phil Mickelson and Kenny Perry in the clubhouse. Later, US Open champion Graeme McDowell also posted a 66 - eight shots better than Tiger Woods' uninspired 74.

Until then, France's Gregory Bourdy and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy had been leading the European challenge, as they both carded two under par rounds of 68.

"I made three birdies, I just made a mistake on the par three - number 15 - missed my shot," said three-time European Tour winner Bourdy.

"But otherwise it was consistent. I missed just a few putts from nothing, so it was a bit unlucky, but it was good all around. The driver I think was one of the keys here to play well, so I tried to keep that driver on the fairway, all week."

McIlroy was delighted to put himself in contention with a strong opening round.

“I'd love to get my game in the best possible shape going into next week, but I'm focusing on this week and trying to do better than I did last year,” he said.

“I didn't play very well here last year. I feel it is a golf course if I can play well on, it's a course that I can get it going and possibly put myself in with a chance to win.”

McIlroy was playing with Mickelson, who recovered from a poor start in his latest bid to depose Tiger Woods as World Number One.

Mickelson and Lee Westwood both have the chance to end Woods' 270-week reign at the top of the rankings at Firestone this weekend.

Starting on the back nine, World No 2 Mickelson bogeyed the final two of his opening six holes, but he immediately bounced back with a birdie before producing five more after the turn.

“It was a good day in that I got off to a poor start and was a couple over par and then was able to turn it around and shoot 30 on my back nine, which is the front, to get in good position after the first day,” said the Masters Tournament Champion.

PGA EUROPRO TOUR REPORT

Saltman brothers, McAlpine, Rankin all

among Scots failures at Formby Hall

Only five Scots made the cut in this week's PGA EuroPro Tour event, the Formby Hall Classic in Lancashire. The Scots who failed included two of the Saltman brothers, Barry Hume, Graham Rankin, Paul Doherty, Lee Harper, Ross Cameron, Kevin McAlpine and Shaun McAllister.
Englishman Steve Uzzell holds a one shot lead going into the final day.
Uzzell (Hornsea Golf Club) is leading the race for the £10,000 in the ninth event of the season at the Formby Hall Golf Resort and Spa in Merseyside.
He had a joint share of the lead at the start of Thursday’s play but a round of three-under gave him an outright advantage.
Matt Allen is in tied second place on seven-under after two rounds and he is joined on the same score by Nick McCarthy (Moortown).
Allen is heading for his fifth top ten finish of the season and looking to move up in the Order of Merit where he is currently tenth.
Daniel Gaunt’s amazing 2010 has continued as he is in contention for another victory on the PGA EuroPro Tour.
Australian Gaunt, who is based in New Malden, Surrey , has dominated the season and is also vying for the title here.
He has already won once on the Tour in 2010 – at Wensum Valley in Norfolk - but also finished second twice, third and seventh as he leads the Order of Merit by more than £7,000.
Gaunt is in fourth place on six-under but would have been joint second if he had not claimed a bogey on the last.
One of the best rounds of the day came from 2007 money list winner Graeme Clark ( Doncaster ), who shot a six-under score of 66.
Birdies at the third, fifth, seventh, tenth, 14th, 17th and 18th brought him in contention for the £10,000 winner’s prize, although his day could have been even better if he had claimed a bogey at the 15th.
Clark is hoping to win his first PGA EuroPro Tour event in three years after finishing first on three occasions in the 2007 season.
Kevin Harper (East Devon), Scott Henry (The Carrick on Loch Lomond) and Ryan Brown (Worksop Golf Club) all join Clark on five-under, while four men are a shot behind.
The top 50 plus ties have advanced to the last round, which begins on Friday morning.

SAM TORRANCE HEADS FAIRMONT FIELD

NEWS RELEASE
A strong field led by Sam Torrance will be heading to Fairmont St Andrews for the 2010 Cleveland/Srixon Scottish Senior Open from August 20-22.
Torrance hopes to make home advantage count when he tees it up later this month, and the former Ryder Cup captain can look forward to competing at the highest level on the links golf course he helped shape himself.
With an increased prize fund of £250,000 the event is sure to have a big say in the eventual winner of the 2010 European Senior Tour Order of Merit and another former Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam is also among the big names signed up to compete.
Woosnam is not the only player with connections to golf’s biggest team event: a host of former Ryder Cup stars will be battling it out on the five-star resort’s Torrance course including Costantino Rocca, David Smyth, Eamonn Darcy and Antonio Garrido.
The Cleveland/Srixon Scottish Senior Open is one of the longest-running events on the Senior Tour and organisers are hoping for another dramatic finish after Glenn Ralph secured the 2009 title by finishing one stroke clear of fellow-Englishman Bob Cameron and Argentine Luis Carbonetti to cap a remarkable comeback from a broken ankle.
Charles Head, general manager of Fairmont St Andrews, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the cream of the Senior Tour back for a second year and are looking forward to another fantastic event.
“It is unbelievable to be able to watch so many legends of the game competing in these events and when you see some of the shots they play you wonder why they’re not still contesting the Majors.
“We’ve invested a lot in the resort and the courses in the last few years and getting prestigious events like this is the reason why. I can’t wait to welcome the players and fans to Fairmont St Andrews and to get the action underway.”
Fairmont St Andrews boasts two first-class 18-hole layouts in the Torrance and Kittocks courses. Both have benefited as part of a £17m redevelopment the luxury resort has recently undergone, which also saw improvements to the lavish spa complex and five-star hotel.

Brora five-day men's open tournament

Polson v Stewart in eagerly-awaited semi-final

By ROBIN WILSON
There is an eagerly awaited semi final showdown for the Clynelish Salver in Brora's five day event between the top two young golfers the Club has produced over the past ten years.
The two involved are Euan Polson and Calum Stewart, separated by six years in age, Euan now 23 but when eighteen a finalist in the Scottish Boys Championship at Murcar, and Calum (17) a current Scottish boy's internationalist. Today in the first semi final at 9.20am they will cross swords for the first time.
It is Polson's first return to the event since his shift to Inverness and he secured his last four place with a 19th hole win over the leading qualifier Simon Harper (Castle Royle) in the quarter finals. Since his rise to prominence, captain of the Scottish under-16 teams national events has prevented Stewart from showing his talent in front of the members so there is sure to be a good following watching this semi final. Stewart was three under par in his fifteen hole win over Dougie Brown (Prestwick).
The other semi will also be a new experience for Loch Ness teenager Craig MacDougall (19) when this five handicapper faces up to the 2002 winner Ian Powell (Murcar Links). Powell received a first round walk over from the reigning Sutherland County Champion, Dougall Chalmers (Panmure) when the Dornoch member mistook his first round starting time but after being behind to local member Graeme Grant in his quarter final tie he recovered to win after seventeen holes.
Golspie's Alistair MacDougall will meet Alister Fraser (Deeside) in the first handicap group semi final for the McRobert Thistle Cup while also trying to keep an interest in his son Craig's progress against Powell. The Deeside member has been left the family job of polishing the cup for another year after it was won last year by his son Sam. Calum Stewart also has an interest in the second semi final of this group where his younger brother Iain (15) plays the new Brora Postmaster, Andy Stewart, who has just joined the club from the Dundee area.
The semi final line-ups of the two other handicap sections are:
Class 2- Clynelish Shield - Jamie Malcolm (Prestonfield), the holder, v Robert MacDonald (Brora); Peter Kennedy (Brampton Heath) v Richard Sutherland (Brora).
Class 3 - Achroisk Cup –John MacGregor (Brora) v Calum MacDonald (Notts): George Leonard (Fortrose & Rosemarkie) v Kyle Sutherland (Brora)

IRELAND WIN BOYS' HOME INTERNATIONALS

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE RandA
Ireland have won the 2010 Boys Home Internationals after comprehensively defeating Wales on the final day of play at a blustery Southerness Golf Club in Dumfries and Galloway.
Their 10 ½ - 4 ½ victory ensured that they would finish the event with two and a half points out of a possible three, edging out nearest rivals Scotland who finished in second place on two points.
The Irish, who have now won two of the last three Boys Home Internationals, led Wales 3 ½ - 1 ½ at lunchtime, before winning six out of their 10 singles matches and halving two in a dominant afternoon display.
Today’s stand-out performance came from Gary Hurley who won his singles match 5 and 4 to remain unbeaten for the event, with five and a half points from a possible six.
The 17-year-old said: “I’m pleased with the way I played, but it’s fantastic to be part of a winning Irish team. It’s been a great week of golf on a great course.”

“Had it not been for Gary holing a putt for a half yesterday in the last game, Scotland would have won, so that was massive,” added Paul Dunne, a full Irish International who captained Great Britain and Ireland’s Jacques Leglise Trophy team during the 2009 match.
“This morning we spoke about just getting the simple things right. We knew that if we did that, we would win today.”
“I’m really pleased with how the boys played, especially with the young lads: they were fantastic,” said Liam Martin, Ireland’s non-playing Captain. “And I can’t speak highly enough of the likes of Gary Hurley and Dermot McElroy, who didn’t lose at all this week.”
Scotland finished in second place after overcoming England this afternoon. They built on a one-point lead, which they had established after the morning foursomes, winning five singles matches and halving one to win 8 ½ - 6 ½.
Victories this afternoon came courtesy of Grant Forrest, Conor O’Neil and Daniel Hendry, as well as local players Liam Johnston of Dumfries and County Golf Club, and Southerness’ Scott Gibson, who, after losing his opening two matches on day one, won his next four by margins of no less than 4 and 3.
“I had a disappointing first day, but for the rest of it I played really well,” said Gibson. “Local knowledge helped a lot, so I was trying to pass that onto the boys through the week. It was cool to play well in front of people I know on my home course, which I’ve never seen looking this good.”

The majority of those who competed this week will now travel to the west coast of Scotland for the Boys Amateur Championship, which takes place at Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club and Dundonald Links from August 10 to 15.

Tiger evades Ryder Cup question: Will he play as a captain's pick?

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
By MARK REASON
Three times Tiger Woods was asked the question and three times he avoided it. The world No 1 was not prepared to say that he will play for America in this year's Ryder Cup if he requires a captain's pick.
Each time Woods smiled and said: "I'm planning on playing my way into the team."
At the moment Woods is just outside the automatic qualification places but, even when accused of equivocation, he refused to commit himself to playing in Wales in October if selected by captain Corey Pavin.
Woods will tee off in the Bridgestone Invitational on Thursday at 6.50pm, UK time, in the company of Lee Westwood. The pair are being paired so often at the moment that it almost looks like they are dating. Woods said: "It seems like every major tournament we've played together."
If Woods finishes outside the top 10 this week then Westwood could become world No 1 even if he finishes second. Woods said: "Am I conscious of it? Yeah, cos every tournament I go to, you guys keep reminding me. Winning tournaments takes care of a lot of things. Being No 1 is one of them."
Westwood, second at last month's Open but still recovering from a ruptured muscle in his calf, said: "I've hardly hit a ball. I've just been trying to rest up and keep the rehab going and trying not to do too much. I'm under-prepared, really, but still could play well. It's one of my favourite golf courses. It's a World Golf Championship. I've a second and quite a few top-10s, and I think my lowest score is 63, so it suits my eye."
The trouble is that Woods has won round the Firestone course seven times, including the last four times he has competed. Only two men have ever beaten him over the course as a pro.
Woods once even won at Firestone with his eyes shut as the final round ended in near-darkness. He remembered: "When I made the final putt all the flashes went off and you feel like you are at a rock concert."
That type of glam attention has been far harder for Woods to deal with this year.
"It has been difficult,'' he said. ''It has been a trying time for a lot of people who are friends of mine. It's been tough. It has been a long 10 months."
The combination of Woods and Westwood is not the only intriguing pairing today. Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson go out at 2.50pm (UK) and Justin Rose and Paul Casey, both on the edges of the Ryder Cup team, start at 6.50pm from the 10th tee.
Rose sounded more concerned by the PGA Championship next week and was motivated to learn that five of the previous six major winners were first-timers. He said: "Going into a major championship I realise it could be my week. I think I've got the skill-set to do it."
Tiger, four times a winner of the US PGA, is giving everyone hope.
