Groves, Smart hit five-under 67 mark in English Amateur qualifying

FROM THE ENGLISH GOLF UNION WEBSITE
Low scores are not necessarily the criteria on the opening day of the English Amateur Championship. Just qualifying in the leading 64 players is the objective but it didn’t stop Elliot Groves and Henry Smart from shooting five-under-par 67s at Little Aston.
They leads by one from Suffolk’s Hugo Dobson while the best returns at nearby Sutton Coldfield were 68s by Ryan Newman, Jonathan Hurst and international Tommy Fleetwood, fresh from his runner-up spot on the European Challenge Tour.
Groves, 20, from Hampshire, had eight birdies on his card along with three bogeys, having gone out in three under 32.
“I played well and drove the ball well but I missed three putts inside a yard so it could have been a lot better,” said the man from Chandlers Ford, who is at college in the United States.
Smart, another US college student, missed the cut in the English Amateur last year but he is on course for the match play stage this time after also finishing five under.
“It’s my first time at Little Aston but I played solidly and had five birdies plus an eagle at the 12th,” he said. “I missed qualifying by a shot last year but I finish fifth in last week’s South of England Stroke Play so I’m in goof form.”
Dobson, winner of the inaugural South East of England Links Championship in May, reached the turn in level par 35. But a 50-foot putt on the tenth set fire to his round and sparked a run of six successive birdies.
After pars at the next two holes, he stood on the 18th tee at six under. “I’ve not shot five under before,” he said - and he still hasn’t.
An errant drive followed by a wedge into a bunker and a flier over the green added up to a double-bogey six and 68.
“I’ve finished four under 18 times and felt I was on course for my low round. But I hit my drive right and didn’t really commit to the wedge,” Dobson added, “then I missed a ten-foot putt.”
Adam Hedges, another US college student, also found an eagle at the 12th on his way to a 69 and even survived a potential disaster at the testing 17th.
“I hit my drive into the trees, could only chip out, then fired my pitch over the green into water,” he said. “But after a drop I got lucky and chipped-in for a bogey-five.”
After a level-par front nine, the eagle at 12 followed by birdies at the 14th and 15th kick-started his round and the 10 year old from Bromley in Kent came home in 34.
Among those on 70 is England international Eddie Pepperell despite a double-bogey six at the 18th.
“I pulled my drive into the bushes at the last, took a drop and was lucky to chip it out,” said the man who reached the quarter finals last year.
“Then I hit an eight-iron to four feet and missed. Apart from that I played really well and should ahve been six or seven under. But this is all about qualifying.”
At Sutton Coldfield, Newman had seven birdies, four in a front nine of 33, while Hurst matched that with five birdies and just one dropped shot.
Fleetwood, who missed forcing a playoff yesterday at Stoke by Nayland, had a real mixed bag in his 68. He went out in 33 with eagles at the fifth and seventh and came home in level par 35 with two birdies and two bogeys.
The low scoring meant the qualifying score on day one was 71.

Callum Shinkwin in England boys' team for Southerness next week

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH GOLF UNION
Newly-crowned English boys champion Callum Shinkwin has been named in the 11 strong England Squad for the Boys Home Internationals at Southerness Golf Club next week (August 3 to 5).
He is one of seven new caps that will defend the title won at Hankley Common last year.
The new caps are Oliver Carr (Heswall, Cheshire), Harry Casey (Enfield, Middlesex), Jack Heasman (West Essex, Essex), Nathan Kimsey (Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire), Callum Shinkwin (Moor Park, Hertfordshire), Toby Tree (Worthing, Sussex) and Colin Walsh (Hayling, Hampshire, IoW & CI).
The rest of the team is James Burnett (Sleaford, Lincolnshire), Greg Eason (Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire), Paul Lockwood (Hessle, Yorkshire) and Nick Newbold (Kedleston Park, Derbyshire), all of whom represented England in the European Boys Team Championships earlier this month.
Shinkwin won the English Boys under 18 Championship for the Carris Trophy at Woodhall Spa last week by seven strokes from Casey and Lockwood after stunning rounds of 67 and 68 over the testing par 73 Hotchkin Course.
Carr, a former Cheshire junior champion, was capped at under 16 level and finished runner-up in this year’s Fairhaven Trophy, while Casey is another former under 16 cap and Middlesex under 16 champion, who was fourth in the Fairhaven event.
Heasman, also an under 16 cap, reached the quarter finals of the British Boys last year and finished fifth in this year’s Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, won by Kimsey after a three-way playoff at Nizels in Kent. Kimsey also finished runner-up in the Lincolnshire Championship.
Tree won the English under 16 Championship for the McGregor Trophy at Prince’s two weeks ago, having been under 14 Champion in 2008, was the winner of the Douglas Johns Trophy last year and an under 16 cap, while Walsh, also capped at under 16 level, was tied fifth in the Carris Trophy.
Burnett is another who has stepped up from under 16 level, having tied for the Junior County Champions title in 2009. This year, he has finished runner-up in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and fifth in the Fairhaven Trophy, while Eason finished third in this year’s McEvoy Trophy and tied fifth in the Midland Boys.
Apart from finishing runner-up in last week’s Carris Trophy, Lockwood was also second in the Yorkshire Boys Championship and finished joint sixth in the McEvoy, while Newbold, another under 16 cap, was beaten in a playoff for the McGregor Trophy last year and finished fourth in the 2010 Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters.
England has a sparkling record in the Boys Home Internationals having finished champions 11 times in the past 14 years.

Allied Surveyors Scottish Men's Amateur Championship

Buchan men McLean and Findlay

in good form on Day 1 at  Gullane

FROM THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION WEBSITE
Order of Merit leader Philip McLean made light work of his opening match to storm through to the second round of the Allied Surveyors Scottish Amateur Championship at Gullane this afternoon.
The 23-year-old from Peterhead, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, whose best performance in the event was reaching the fourth round at Carnoustie two years ago, fired birdies at the third and fifth to move into a four hole lead after just five holes in his match against Martin Stein (Craigielaw). A further birdie followed at the par five 12th hole and a par at the next was good enough to seal a commanding 6 and 5 win ensuring a safe passage into the second round.
“The important thing was winning the opening match and I played some good, solid golf tee to green this afternoon. I’m pleased to get a win under my belt and hopefully I can build on it. The rough is really penal so it’s vital you keep the ball in play off the tee which I was able to do.” said McLean, runner-up in the St Andrews Links Trophy earlier this season.
Fellow North-east star Jordan Findlay maintained his good form of late, easing past George Robertson (Irvine Ravenspark) by a 6 and 4 margin. The former British boys' champion looked in confident mood on the East Lothian links and now faces another North-east player, Newburgh’s Grant Carnie, a quarter-finalos last year, for a place in the third round.
Lundin’s James White, the No 5 seed who won his first SGU Order of Merit event at the Sutherland Chalice earlier this month, fought back from two down after seven holes to record a 3 and 1 victory over Hayston’s Grant Minnes.
White, a final-year Business Studies student at the University of Stirling, took time to get going in his match but clinched a win on the 17th hole after his opponent lost a ball in the thick Gullane rough.
The 2006 Scottish boys' match-play champion admitted: “It took me a while to get going today but I managed to find some rhythm around the turn and played steady par golf after that. I’m feeling confident after my win at Dumfries and drove the ball well, which is vital round here. I reached the last sixteen in 2009 so hopefully I can progress even further this time around.”
Meanwhile, runner-up from two years ago Steven McEwan rediscovered some form to post a 5 and 3 win over Steven Carruthers, while Ayrshire team-mate Euan Brown (Barassie) dug deep to overcome Crieff’s Angus Weir with a win at the 21st hole. Brown reached the quarter-finals at Royal Troon 12 months ago.
Duddingston’s David Miller recovered from a hedge-cutting accident on Saturday to bounce back with a stunning 7 and 6 win over Pollok’s James Hendrick. The 32-year-old was rushed to hospital after slashing open his knee while trimming his garden hedge, but found form with another blade this afternoon:
“I only had 15 putts in the 12 holes of my round so I’m delighted with the way I played. Sitting in hospital for an hour and a half on Saturday, I didn’t think I’d be able to compete but the pain wasn’t too bad and you know what they said about an injured golfer!” joked the Carrick Neill Golf Insurance manager.

JOHN AND GARY JUST MISS OUT

In the Scottish boys' stroke-play championship last week, held over the par 71 Craigielaw course in East Lothian, Alloa’s John Salmond and Dollar’s Gary Chalmers just missed the cut at the halfway stage. Over the tricky course, where distance judgement is absolutely essential to hit the greens--- many are like upturned saucers leaving very little margin for error--- Gary scored a nine over par aggregate of 151 (75-76) with John two shots back on 153 (77-76).
The cut came at a six-over-par 148. However, both picked up tips for improvement, especially how double bogeys are score-wrecking.
John has been showing good form in local boys' open events with wins at Linlithgow and Dunfermline recently. He must be very pleased that his handicap has gone down to scratch.

MODERATE RESULT FOR LAWRENCE

Alva’s Lawrence Allan missed out on the boys' stroke-play event because of a clash with the European Young Masters Championship, held in Hungary last week In this under-16s event, he finished with the lowest three-round score of the Scots contingent of two boys and two girls.
In difficult conditions, especially on the last day, Lawrence returned a three-round aggregate of 237 (76, 78, and 83) to finish in 22nd equal position out of more than 100 players. His second round could have been very good. It contained six birdies, showing considerable class, but these were neutralised by a few double bogeys.
In the last round, only 15 players broke 80, with high scores returned by many of the higher handicap players. One player scored 12 on the first hole!
In the Nations Cup, the Scottish team finished in 19th position on 734. The winning team from Finland scored 676.
In the World Amateur Golf Rankings, Lawrence has moved up again, .almost 150 places actually, thanks to some points from the English under-16s event

COUNTY SENIOR GOLFERS IN ACTION
Tulliallan’s Bob Stewart, now ninth in the senior Order of Merit, qualified quite comfortably for the Scottish seniors match-play championship at Kinross last week with scores of 77 and 81. In the first round, Bob had a good win over Derek Murphy by 6 and 5, but could not sustain it in the second round where he lost to top seed Colin Christy by 2 and 1.
The event was won by Tony Stafford (Gleneagles), a former Clackmannanshire golfer.
Seniors action moves to Stirling this week with the first “Super Seniors” event for the over 65’s--- decided over 36 holes on Thursday and Friday. It is pleasing to see a number of local golfers supporting the event.

COUNTY GOLF LEAGUES
County Golf Leagues co-ordinator Sam Kinnaird is having a difficult time with both the boys' league and men’s league matches. Sam remarks: “Matches are cancelled at the last minute, even in good weather, plus there is a delay in reporting some of the results. All of this makes it difficult to work out accurate team positions”
Sam’s latest assessment is as follows
Boys' League:- Braehead and Alva are leading with six points from four matches; Alloa (six matches) and Tillicoultry (three matches) both have four points.
Last Sunday’s matches did not resolve the position. Only one match was played, between Alloa and Tillicoultry ,which resulted in a draw. The Alloa team were one man short.
MATCH RESULTS:
Alloa 3 Tillicoultry 3
(Alloa names first)
John Salmond bt Steven Watson 4 and 3, Calum Boyd lost to Kevin Ross 4 and 3; Grant Ross lost to Scott Baird 3 and 2; Jack Dowie bt Ryan Millar 1 hole, Angus Boyd bt Calum Reid 6 and 5, Jonathan Clark (Tillicoultry) won on a walk-over.
Men’s League: Alloa leads with six points from three matches; Tulliallan are in second place with four points, also from three matches. The remaining clubs have still to score points in their matches.
