Scots still in the hunt in Essex Challenge

From Challenge Tour Press Officer Paul Symes
Despite solid rounds the Scottish duo of Craig Lee and Callum Macaulay lost ground on the leaders on day three of the English Challenge, but both men still retain hope of capturing their maiden Challenge Tour titles.
Macaulay’s round of 70 contained four birdies and two bogeys, including one at the last, to join Lee on 12 under par, five shots behind the leader Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark. The man from Kincardine put on “the best putting display of my career”, but found little luck on the greens.
He said: “It was by far the best I’ve ever putted, but nothing went my way. Every single putt I hit was the right weight, and although a couple went in, at least four stopped millimetres short of the hole. So it was a really frustrating day for me, because I should be at least three or four shots better off than I am, and I’d be right there in contention. But hopefully I’ve got all my bad luck out the way today, and tomorrow it’ll be my day.
“Thorbjørn’s obviously playing very well here and this season overall, so he’ll be riding on a huge wave of confidence. But my confidence is high at the minute also. If I can get off to a good start, then I might be able to put some pressure on him. He’s up there to be shot at – and I’ll be shooting! You never know what can happen. If I keep playing the way I’ve been playing and putting the way I’ve been putting, there’s no reason why I can’t win.”
Lee, whose round of 69 featured five birdies, feels Olesen might be too far ahead to catch, but is determined to take second place at least.
He said: “He played some great golf today, and if he plays like that again tomorrow, he’s going to be very hard to catch. There’s a bunch of guys sitting on 12 and 13 under par, so the main aim is to jump over them. If the leader comes back to us then that’s all well and good, although I can’t really see it happening. But you never know – we’ll give it our best shot and see where it takes us.”

SENIOR OPEN AT CARNOUSTIE

Langer leads by three ... but he's not counting his chickens just yet

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Bernhard Langer will take a three-shot lead into the final round of The Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard after a third round 69 at Carnoustie today.
The Florida-based German's two under par round moved him clear of halfway joint-leader Corey Pavin - the US Ryder Cup captain carding a one over 72 to lie second on three under par.
Two-time Masters Tournament champion Langer advanced to six under for the week with birdies at the first, sixth and 15th, but a bunkered tee shot at the last cost him a bogey-free round.
He almost got up and down after a fine pitch to eight feet, but left his putt right and had to settle for bogey.
"It was a good round of golf again," said the former Ryder Cup Captain. "I played very solid, and wasn't in too much trouble for the most part.
"There's only two things that I could have done better; I think the three-putt on 14 was a shame after hitting two beautiful shots in there. And I wasn't too far away, I was only about 35 feet away with the first putt and three-putted that one.
"And then the bogey on the last one, I hit probably the wrong club off the tee and just trickled into the bunker and ended up making bogey there. But otherwise, I was very happy with my round.
"But I'm aware of the golf course - that it's one of the toughest links you'll ever play. So I'm very much aware that the three-shot lead is nothing, or very little, so I still need to play a very solid, very good round of golf tomorrow if I'm going to lift the trophy."
Pavin will also feel he may have done better on the last, after a fine approach he pulled a 12 foot birdie attempt left and in doing so missed an opportunity to halve the deficit.
"It was a day I played fairly well, and a lot of putts just missed," he said. "Sometimes you have days like that - I would rather have it be on Saturday than Sunday.
"So I'll go work on my putting and see if I was maybe lined up a little bit wrong or something was off. But I was pleased with today and I played well. It seemed like I had a lot of 12, 15 footers for birdie and couldn't get them in - but that's the way it goes sometimes and that's why we play tomorrow, as well."
Langer has had seven top-ten finishes in Senior Majors since joining the over-50 ranks, and won the Champions Tour Order of Merit in 2008 and 2009, but victory over the Carnoustie Championship Course would represent his first Major title since he collected the second of his Green Jackets in 1993.
By contrast, Pavin is playing his first Senior Major after turning 50 last November. He had birdies at the sixth and 14th, but a bogey at the third and consecutive dropped shots at the tenth and 11th left him with work to do to catch Langer.
“I'm going to play the same way,” revealed Pavin. “This course, once you start attacking and getting aggressive, it can really come up and bite you. But if I get into position with a few holes to go, I might take a chance if I need to”
No fewer than six players finished the day tied for third on two under - five of them American.
Fred Funk, Jay Don Blake, Russ Cochran, Larry Mize and Jay Haas were joined by Wales' former Senior Tour Order of Merit winner Ian Woosnam.

ST JOHN CROWNED ENGLISH PGA CHAMPION

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE PGA
Ben St John survived a late scare to notch a career high with victory in the inaugural Business Fort English PGA Championship in association with Cobra and 59Club at Golf At Goodwood today.
The 30-year-old Surrey pro was cruising to victory in the £30,000 tournament with a three-shot cushion going up the last but contrived to double-bogey it after finding trouble with his approach shot.
But, after hacking out from the trees, he chipped on and two-putted to end with a level par 71 to win by a stroke and pocket the £5,000 first prize plus entry into next year's English Open on the European Tour.
Afterwards St John, who is a PGA pro at Woodcote Park, near Coulsdon, where he played his junior golf, admitted he was stunned by his achievement in what was his first PGA national event.
"It's totally unexpected but I'm really excited to be the first English PGA Champion," said St John whose younger brother Joe caddied for him.
Ireland-based, but Yorkshire-born Rob Giles from Greenore GC, ended second after setting the clubhouse target at three under par with a best of the day 68 while Derby's James Whatley (East Midlands) was third a stroke further back with a final round 71.
St John's escapade on the last was a rare hiccup in a seamless march to the title built over three solid displays on the difficult and testing Downs Course in which accurate driving was pivotal.
"The course was fabulous. It's a really tough driving course and I like to think I'm a good driver. That was the key, putting it in the right kind of fairways to attack the flag," added St John.
His closing 71 included birdies on five, 11 and 16 with a dropped shot on seven and a double bogey on the last but he identified his par putt on the 428-yard par four 15th as the key shot.
"It was a nasty five-footer with a bit of swing down the hill but I managed to sink it and from there I just pressed for a birdie which I got at the next to get to six under," he said.
As it transpired he needed that three-stroke advantage although St John appeared pretty relaxed about his predicament which saw him smash his second shot into some trees beside the 18th.
"I hit a cut off the tee and overdid it to end up on the face of the bunker. I was going to be sensible and lay up but it didn't seem too hard," he said.
"I had a word with my brother Joe who suggested trying to get it on the front edge with a four iron which in hindsight was probably the right call. When I got to the ball I could see the leaderboard and knew I could miss the green and chip and two putt."
St John was out in the last group with Gary Marks (World of Golf) who endured an erratic round that began with a pulled shot and bogey on the first and would go on to include five birdies, two more bogeys and three double bogeys.
Marks finished in a share of fifth with Chris Sands (SkyCaddie) while Roger Tuddenham (Hedge End) holed a 10ft putt on the last to clinch outright fourth spot with a final round 72.

Last-hole bogey costs Oosthuizen share of lead in Stockholm

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Open champion Louis Oosthuizen blamed a "stupid" shot for dropping one off the lead with a round to go at the Nordea Scandinavian Masters in Stockholm.
Oosthuizen, trying to become the first player ever to follow a Claret Jug victory with another European Tour win a week later, was tied with Swede Richard Johnson and Korean KJ Choi when he pulled his approach to the last into sand.
Splashing out to 18 feet and missing the putt dropped the 27-year-old South African to nine under par and it means Johnson and Choi go head-to-head in the final group again on Sunday.
Johnson matched Oosthuizen's two under 70, while halfway leader Choi managed only a 71 after experiencing what he called "all four seasons in one day".
It was windy, it was wet and for one stroke it was very cold too for the 40-year-old, whose only European success was the 2003 German Masters.
Choi hit his second to the long 13th into the edge of the lake and chose to take his shoes and socks off and wade in to try to splash the ball out.
He went over the green with it before salvaging his par, but found himself in a three-way tie when Johnson and Oosthuizen birdied the 622-yard 15th and he missed from five feet.
Johnson has a friend - a local restauranteur, radio host and someone he describes as "kind of a comedian" - acting as his caddie this week.
His regular in the States, where the 33-year-old is based, is Lance Ten Broeck, but he was playing in the British Senior Open at Carnoustie this week.
New Zealander Mark Brown, with a best-of-the-day 67, and Argentina's Rafa Echenique (72) are joint fourth on seven under, while Italian Edoardo Molinari, who could force himself into the all-important top nine on the European Ryder Cup table with a top two finish, is one further back.

Tony Stafford beats Sandy Pirie in seniors' final

Tony Stafford (Gleneagles) is the new Scottish senior men’s amateur match-play champion. He beat former Walker Cup player, Sandy Pirie (Hazlehead) by 3 and 1 in the final over the Montgomerie course at Kinross Golf Club today.
Pirie, 68 years old and the 13th of 32 qualifiers, was three up at the turn with par golf but lost the 10th to a birdie, the 12th to a par and the 13th to a birdie to be pulled back to all square.
Stafford, the No 3 seed and 11 years younger than his opponent, went two up with a par at the 14th and a birdie at the 15th and he completed his come-from-behind victory with a par at the 17th where Pirie was bunkered.
Stafford was roughly two over par for the holes played.
