East is East and West is West ... but pros will meet in July 20 match

What started off as a bit of friendly banter between a couple of golf pros has now turned into a showpiece match between some of the top golf professionals in the country in Edinburgh this summer.
Two teams of 12 from the West and the East of Scotland will battle it out for charity on Tuesday, July 20 at Merchants of Edinburgh Golf Club for the inaugural FB Cup.
“This all started as a chat on Facebook between myself and Gary McFarlane from Clober Golf Club”, said James McGhee of Edinburgh. “Before we knew it we had dozens of golf pros from all over wanting to play so we have restricted it to a 12 a side match, playing in four-balls with singles games included in there as
well”.
The match has now taken on more significance with all the pros doing what they can to raise some money for local charity’s in the West and the East. The winning team will donate 2/3 of all money collected to
their charity with the losers still donating 1/3 to their charity of
choice.
“It’s a great idea for a match” said Neil Colquhoun of the host club. “We are having the match followed by an informal BBQ and we hope that spectators will come along and watch some great golf. It's
free to come along to watch the golf and there will be some fun things going on during the day as well.
Some of the players include recent Scottish PGA Champions Chris Kelly and Craig Ronald as well as some new up and coming golf pros.
If anyone would like more information then there is a Facebook page set up or they can contact Gary on garymcfarlaneclobergc@gmail.com

All six Scots make the Challenge Tour cut in Lyon

By PAUL SYMES
European Challenge Tour Press Officer
Scott Jamieson and Raymond Russell led six Scots into the weekend of the ALLIANZ Golf Open de Lyon on the Challenge Tour, but they all have some ground to make up if they are to catch midway leader Oscar Floren of Sweden.
Russell’s round of 67 – the lowest of the day from the Scottish contingent – moved him to four under par, and he was joined on that mark by Scott Jamieson, who signed for a 69 for the second successive day.
Callum Macaulay and Elliott Saltman were one shot back on three under par after respective rounds of 69 and 74, whilst Jamie McLeary (70) and Andrew McArthur (69) squeezed under the cut line, which fell at two under par.
After a round of 67 Floren leads the way on ten under par, one shot ahead of Frenchman Adrien Bernadet and the English duo of Paul Dwyer and Charlie Ford.

Dear and Hume make Madrid cut with ease

Perthshire pair Steven Hume and Gavin Dear from Murrayshall survived the 36-hole cut with ease in this week's Alps Tour event at Club Campo de Villa, Madrid.
Joint 21st, they made the one-under-par mark of 141 - three shots inside the limit.
Hume had rounds of 69 and 72. He almost cancelled out a triple bogey 7 at the eighth with an eagle 3 at the 14th.
Dear had a bogey at the first and a bogey at the 17th but in between these blemishes the former Walker Cup man was brilliant. He covered nine holes in five under par with birdies at the fourth, sixth, seventh, 11th and 12th.
Spaniards dominated the top four places in the leaderboard, headed by Alvaro Salto with rounds of 65 and 67 for 10-under 132 and a two-stroke lead.

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH GOLF UNION
Nick Ward (Redbourn, Hertfordshire), 15, newly crowned Hertfordshire county champion, has been selected to represent The English Golf Union (EGU) in the R and A’s Junior Open at Lundin Golf Club next week (Monday to Wednesday, July 12 to 14).
A member of the England Under 16 Squad, Ward was Herts Under-14 champion in 2007 and Scottish Under-14 champion a year later.
He also carded a course record 61 at his home club of Redbourn in 2008 and a record 65 at Cuddington in 2009.

Barclays Scottish Open report, scores

Darren Clarke leads by three

as Mickelson & Co miss cut

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
With a few extra words by Colin Farquharson
Darren Clarke turned in another brilliant performance in wet weather at Loch Lomond to take command of The Barclays Scottish Open at the halfway stage.
The 41 year old Ulsterman, now 179th in the Official World Golf Ranking, moved to ten under par and three clear of second-placed Italian Edoardo Molinari after adding a four under par 67 to his opening 65.
Given the "brutal" conditions, Clarke considered it an even more satisfying round. His one bogey - the only one he has had in 36 holes so far - came when he three-putted from just 20 feet at the short 11th.
Molinari, whose younger brother and Omega Mission Hills World Cup-winning partner Francesco is in fifth place at five under, shot 69 and admitted he would love to partner his sibling in the final round.
He said: "It would be nice to play with him on Sunday.
"We have double the chances of the others. We are competitive, but we are very close and happy for the other."
Welshman Bradley Dredge and Swede Peter Hedblom shared third place. They were partners in the first two rounds and have matched each other with scores of 67 and 69.
Clarke, superbly placed now to claim The Open Championship place which is up for grabs at the event, caused some laughter when he offered his own description of the morning weather.
When asked to recall  the last time he had played through such a deluge he replied: "It wasn't torrential heavy rain, it was just torrential rain.
"If you're from Ireland there's a difference, a massive difference.
"We knew it was going to be very hard, but obviously at home in Portrush I've had much worse than this.
"When we got on the first tee and there was no placing we were all surprised. The ball was going nowhere and consequently the course was playing brutally long.
"You have to take what the course gives you and try to grind out a score. Certainly I've very pleased to have ground out four under - I thought anything around level par was going to be pretty good."
After his early slip-up - the 11th was his second hole - he sank a 15 foot putt on the next, chipped in for another birdie at the demanding 16th and holed from just off the edge at the first and third.
On the fourth a 20 footer found the target and he parred in over a closing stretch which saw John Daly go from six under to two under and Ernie Els have back-to-back double bogeys.
US Open Championship winner Graeme McDowell safely made it through the cut on level par after another 71 on his return after his Pebble Beach victory. But World No 2 Phil Mickelson ran up a 9 at one hole and a 74 for 146 was one shot too many to qualify for the weekend action. Other big names to miss out included Ernie Els (76-145), Vijay Singh (73-145), Colin Montgomerie (74-148), Americans J B Holmes (71-145), and Lucas Glover (73-146), recent European Tour winner Miguel Angel Jimenez (78-150) and South African major winner Retief Goosen (73-146).
Although Stephen Gallacher (73-140), Craig Lee (72-142), Martin Laird (71-142), David Drysdale (72-143) and Richie Ramsay (74-143) beat the cut, it was not a good day for Scots in general on her home turf.
Alastair Forsyth (145), Scott Drummond (146), Paul Lawrie (147), Marc Warren (147), Andrew Coltart (149), Peter Whiteford (150), Steven O'Hara (150) and Scottish amateur champion David Law (157) all have the rest of the weekend off.
It was a day when the tough got going. Bradley Dredge commented: "Yesterday I thought it was one of the toughest conditions we've played in, quite windy and the pins were quite difficult as well.
"And today, I think it's even more difficult in this rain because the ball is going so short. Darren is at ten under at the moment - that's some playing, it really is."
Hedblom revealed he was not surprised by Clarke's form after witnessing his J P McManus Invitational Pro-Am triumph earlier in the week.
"It's unbelievable to shoot that score today, the way the course is playing," he said. "But he played good Monday, Tuesday, as well, earlier this week, so he's back to his best - it's nice to see."

Paul Goydos makes US Tour history with a 12-under-par 59

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
American Paul Goydos became only the fourth player ever to shoot 59 in a US PGA Tour event when he went 12 under par in Thursday's first round of the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois
Goydos made 12 birdies in a bogey-free tour of the par-71 TPC Deere Run course.
The 46 year-old birdied eight of his last nine holes to complete the inward half in 28, finishing on 59 by sinking a seven-foot birdie putt at the 18th.
Goydos missed just one fairway and two greens in regulation while taking only 22 putts, sinking a 39-footer at the par-four 11th for his longest birdie.

Turkish Delight in store fore Dumfries

and Co's Stuart Syme and Ian McEwan

Dumfries and County's Ian McEwan admitted his year is getting better and better after winning the BMW-supported PGA International Pro-Captain Challenge Scottish Region qualifier at Crail.
Club captain McEwan teamed up with PGA professional Stuart Syme to win the event by one shot from Lundin's Ron Walker and Stuart Clunie after carding a seven-under-par 65.
Now the duo will be playing in the Turkey final which will take place over 36 holes at the PGA Sultan Course at Antalya Golf Club in December (7-8).
And McEwan explained that his year as captain has been memorable in more ways than one after he was also mentioned on the BBC's US Masters commentary and won a £350 electric trolley in a magazine competition.
He said: "I've had a great year as captain so far and reaching the final in Turkey caps it off."
Syme added: "I met Peter Alliss on the plane over to the Masters and asked if he could say that our club's centenary coming up and give Ian a mention on air.
"I never told Ian so he jumped out of his chair when his name was read out! Then he won the powered trolley so it's all going his way this year."
For Syme the win went some of the way to making up for missing out on the final previously when a wrongly filled-in scorecard meant he was disqualified after looking like he would qualify.
However Syme has played in a final before - 13 years ago when it was held at Wentworth.
But he was frustrated to miss out a second time - until now.
McEwan added: "It's fair to say that Stuart had his game face on! He was up for it and after birdies on the first two holes we thought we might be in with a chance.
"But we made sure we filled our card in very carefully at the end."
The pair could even afford the luxury of a bogey at the 18th - their only one of the day.
McEwan, who plays off 10, added: "Stuart played very well but we just went away for a couple of hours to St Andrews at the end, there was no point watching everyone to see if we were going to get beaten."
Syme was delighted to finally make the final: "It's payback time for what happened with the scorecard a few years back.
"I made the final in 1997, but I couldn't have come closer the second time, we'd had our pictures taken and were talking to the press people, everything like that. Then we found out we'd been disqualified.
"So this win is great. We were very solid, made a good start, an eagle at the eighth and then four birdies in five holes on the back nine. Our only blip was at the 18th.
"I've heard a lot about the Sultan course so it'll be fantastic to go out there and play it."

Handa Aussie Senior Open in November to include 30 Europeans

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE EUROPEAN TOUR
The future of Australia’s premier senior golf tournament, the Handa Australian Senior Open, continues to gain strength with the announcement that the event is to be co-sanctioned with the European Senior Tour.
The three-year co-sanctioning of the Handa Australian Senior Open will see a $100,000 increase in the prize money to AUD$400,000 and the inclusion of the leading 30 players from the European Senior Tour. It will be the opening tournament on the 2011 European Senior Tour schedule and will be followed by the Handa Cup Senior Masters in Japan the week after.
Royal Perth Golf Club will host the Handa Australian Senior Open from November 19 to 21 this year when champions of the calibre of Ian Woosnam, Sandy Lyle and Sam Torrance will compete for the prestigious title. The tournament will also be a significant occasion for Australian golf icon Ian Baker-Finch, who will make his debut on home soil as a Senior golfer at the event. He will be joined in the field by defending champion Mike Harwood and fellow countrymen Peter Senior, Wayne Grady and David Merriman.
Dr Haruhisa Handa, Chairman of the International Sports Promotion Society and long-term golf supporter, said he was pleased the European Senior Tour have agreed to co-sanction the event and pledged his continued support to the tournament he resurrected back in 2007.
“I am so proud of the growth of the Handa Australian Senior Open over the past three years and to now have the event feature in conjunction with the European Senior Tour is a big step forward for Senior Golf in Australia,” said Dr Handa.
ISPS is a leading sponsor of European Senior Tour events with the inclusion of the Handa Australian Senior Open taking their involvement to five tournaments in five different countries. ISPS have helped take the Senior Tour to new corners of the globe and have also helped bring a charitable angle to all events through their promotion of blind golf at each event.

BARCLAYS SCOTTISH OPEN

Darren Clarke's flawless 65 gives him one shot lead

FROM THE BBCSPORT.COM WEBSITE
Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke will carry a one-shot lead into the second round of the Scottish Open after carding a six-under-par 65.
Clarke made six birdies during an unblemished round, to finish ahead of England's Graeme Storm, Italy's Edoardo Molinari and Irishman Damien McGrane.
The 1995 Open winner John Daly is the star name among those on four under.
Ernie Els, who has twice won at Loch Lomond, is on two under while Masters champion Phil Mickelson recorded 71.
Northern Ireland's US Open champion Graeme McDowell also finished on par, along with Ryder Cup hopeful and last year's winner Martin Kaymer of Germany.
Republic of Ireland's Paul McGinley had a poor day, shooting a 74 which matched the score of Colin Montgomerie, who will captain Europe in the Ryder Cup in October.
Clarke is aiming to clinch the one remaining qualifying spot for next week's Open which is available to the highest top-five finisher at Loch Lomond who has not already qualified for St Andrews.
Meanwhile Daly, who is now 499 in the world, has an added incentive to win the £500,000 first prize as a result of owing about £700,000 in unpaid taxes in the United States.
"It's a struggle, but I'm not broke," said American Daly, who is no longer a US Tour card holder.
"But I'm only 44 and I still feel there's a lot of golf left. I still feel I have the talent and can still win.
"I'm very competitive. I feel inside I don't have a lot to prove to anybody but myself."
Storm, who fired in six birdies and dropped just one shot, attributed his good round to his new putter.
The 32-year-old commented: "I picked the putter up last week by chance really. I seem to have finally found one that suits me. I keep switching them and trying different things.
"It's been a bit of a frustrating period for me so hopefully this will continue for the rest of the week."
Meanwhile, Scot Gallacher was delighted to have posted a good total in front of his home crowd.
Obviously, one day I would like to be in the same team as my brother and play with him
"I've been playing well in recent weeks but haven't been holing putts," Gallacher stated.
"I got off to a good start, playing at 7.50am it was cold and windy and you have to take your chances. Thankfully I did that."
Italian Edoardo Molinari kept his dream alive of playing in the 2010 Ryder Cup with his brother Francesco after carding an impressive 66.
The pair claimed the World Cup title together in 2009.
Francesco, who is on three under, stands eighth, while Edoardo is 11th on the world points list from which the first four in Montgomerie's side will come.
"Obviously, one day I would like to be in the same team as my brother and play with him," Edoardo Molinari reflected.
"We did very well at the World Cup and I think we can play well together.
"Francesco definitely deserves to be in but I need a big win over my next five tournaments and good results to get in."
