Raymond Russell ties for fourth on Alps Tour in France

FROM THE ALPS TOUR WEBSITE
Juan Antonio Bragulat claimed his second title of the season this weekend. After Frenchman Alan Bihan and Italian Matteo Delpodio, Spaniard Bragulat is the third player this year to win twice. His margin this morning was only one stroke but his closest challengers could not score better than level. He played 68 to win the Open de la Mirabelle d'Or 4 clear at Metz, France.
Scot Raymond Russell finished his round square with a par 72  at the Mirabelle d'Or golf course to tie 4th place on 272 . Young French Amateur Clément Sordet signed for a disappointing 74 and finished 7th tie.
At second place tie, 4 strokes behind the lead, Englishman Sam Robinson and Frenchman Laurent Poncelet. Poncelet did sign the best score of the day, 64. The 32 year old player has been playing as professional for only 9 months. He used to have “normal job” in logistic and golf event. Last year, he decided to change his life with his family, friends and wife support. This first great result is a great gift for Laurent “Lolo” Poncelet.
Raymond Russell earned 2,525 Euros while fellow Scot Gavin Dear earned 1,088 Euros for a share of 13th place on 275 following a closing score of 69.

Peter Latimer is Local Hero winner (by seven strokes)

of Solarsport East of Scotland Open

FROM THE SCOTSMAN WEBSITE
By MARTIN DEMPSTER
Peter Latimer, a 22-year-old who has been a member of the host club for a decade, proved a popular winner of the Solarsport East of Scotland Open over a fast-running Lundin links yesterday.
A brace of 66s in the final two rounds gave Latimer, who lives in Markinch but has spent the last four years at college in America, a 14-under-par aggregate of 270 and a seven-shot victory in the Scottish order of merit event.
The success came two years after Latimer had lost in a play-off to Australian Rohan Blizzard in the same tournament and, even though his home club is now St Andrews New, he admitted the biggest win of his career couldn't have come at a better place.
"I've been a member at Lundin since I was 12 and to record such a win here is fantastic," said Latimer, who feels his game has come on enormously, thanks to his spell at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.
"I was off one (of a handicap) when I went and wasn't even good enough to get into an event like this," he added.
Five behind at the halfway stage, Latimer, a quarter-finalist in last year's Scottish amateur championship at Royal Troon and who had secured top-ten finishes in both the Scottish Stroke Play and Tennant Cup since returning from the US, was still three shots off the pace going into the final round, which he started with a double-bogey after duffing his second from a divot into a bunker.
He also dropped two shots later in the round at the 12th but eight birdies and an eagle – he drove the 17th and holed from six feet – secured a sweet success.
"I thought I had blown it after my double-bogey at the 12th but something obviously happened (in the groups] behind," said Latimer. It did indeed.
Leven Golfing Society's Brian Soutar, who had led the event since an opening 64 before adding scores of 69 and 68, saw his hopes disappear after running up a quadruple-bogey 8 at the tenth, where he had both a penalty drop and a lost ball.
He eventually signed for a costly 79 to finish fourth on 280 as another Fifer, Aberdour's Scott Crichton, claimed second spot after a closing 72.

Darren is made of the Wright

Stuff to win Brabazon Trophy

FROM THE ENGLISH GOLF UNION WEBSITE
Darren Wright proved himself right when he won the Brabazon Trophy, supported by SkyCaddie, at Royal Liverpool today, adding his name to an already list of impressive winners, particularly those at Hoylake. (Picture © Tom Ward)
A level par closing round of 72 for 285, three under par, left him four strokes ahead of Simon Richardson, who returned 74, and five clear of Spain’s Adrian Otaegui, whose 70 was the only sub-par round of the day.
“This win means everything to me,” said Wright. “I came here to prove I can compete with the best and with so many good players here this week on such a good course, I can’t explain how I feel. But this proves that all the hard work I’ve put in over the past 18 months is paying off. I have virtually changed my swing under my coach Alan Thompson and this season I’ve felt I have it under control.”
This is the biggest victory of the 21 year old’s career and follows wins in the Carris Trophy in 2006 and the West of England last year. He was capped at boys level but now feels he can achieve the ultimate as an amateur.
“I know there were England selectors here today and hopefully I have laid down a marker,” added the Hampshire man from Rowlands Castle. “If I can get picked for England hopefully I can get into the Walker Cup squad which is my aim. I’d love to play for my country as I’m a true Englishman.”
On another difficult day over the famous links, Wright knew that even par would be a solid return and if he succeeded others would have to go well under par to beat him.
He went out in 33 with four birdies and only had a few problems in a homeward 39. “I got unlucky a few times but some of the pins were tucked away that you couldn’t attack them,” he added.
But with a comfortable lead and no one mounting a challenge, he stood on the 18th tee knowing that he could take a triple-bogey 7 and still lift the trophy. In the event he took a solid par which underlined his class and his supremacy for the week.
Richardson, from Boston in Lincolnshire, was equally delighted to finish runner-up which also marks him as a talent to be watched.
“This is my best result since I started playing amateur golf full time,” he said. “It’s been a great week and this will give me a lot of confidence to compete with the top players. I made a shaky start today and was four over after seven holes but I steadied myself with a birdie at the eighth and came back in 35. The back nine has been kind to me in the last two rounds as I was three under yesterday.
“But it was tough. Everywhere is so dry and the greens were like lightning. It was like putting on glass but they were true although they caught me out a few times.”
Otaegui’s 70 was a complete mixture with an eagle, five birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey but he came home in 34 to secure third spot on his own.
But many of the more fancied players were made to toil in the breeze. Chris Paisley visited sand on every hole from the 13th in his 76 for joint seventh place on 295 with Jack Senior who matched Wright’s 72. Matthew Southgate from Essex, who won the St Andrews Links Trophy, closed with 78 for 297, Todd Adcock with 75 and Jamie Abbott 77, both for 298 and Tommy Fleetwood 79 for 299.
Tyrrell Hatton, in second spot overnight, also shot 79 for 293 but had the consolation of winning the Henriques Salver for the best performance by a British and Irish player aged under 20, and the Scrutton Jug for the best aggregate from the Brabazon and Berkshire Trophies.

BEATTIE RETAINS HANDS

ACROSS THE SEA TROPHY

Caledonian's Matthew Beattie followed in the footsteps of clubmate Alex Cruickshank and other well-known names from the golfing past, such as Harry Bannerman and Sandy Pirie, when he won the Hands Across the Sea Trophy boys' tournament at the Kings Links today.
Chris Lamb (Newmachar) set the clubhouse target of 68 early in the day and it stood unchallenged until Beattie, in the last group out, eagled the 15th and got the birdie 2 he needed at the short 18th to equal Beattie's score and retain the prestigious trophy by virtue of having the better inward half.
Beattie, pictured by David Grieve with the trophy, and Lamb finished eight shots clear of Chris Dunbar (Caledonian), third with a 76.
Ellon were the winners in both sections of the Stirton Trophy. Bon-Accord made a clean sweep of the 0-14 section.

EUROPEAN TOUR REPORT, SCORES

It's a gift for Horsey as Dredge, Larrabazal blow it

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Englishman David Horsey pulled off the unlikeliest of maiden European Tour victories - in Germany of all places - when he came from five behind to lift the BMW International Open.
Welshman Bradley Dredge and Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal both double-bogeyed the 16th when leading, but 25-year-old Horsey birdied the same hole and then added another on the par-5 last for a one-shot win over compatriot Ross Fisher, who eagled the par-5 18th.
A team-mate of Rory McIlroy in the 2007 Walker Cup, Stockport's Horsey took the £279,334 first prize with a bogey-free closing 67 for an 18 under par total of 270.
With Fisher finishing as he did, Dredge, Larrazabal and Alex Cejka had to settle for a share of third place with another Englishman, Kenneth Ferrie, and another Spaniard, Rafael Cabrera-Bello.
Dredge had led from the opening day and had only one bogey in his first 63 holes, but it all started to go wrong for him - and his hopes of climbing into contention for a Ryder Cup debut on home soil in October - when he three-putted the 10th.
He did the same on the short 12th, missing from under 12 feet, and Larrazabal, who had eagled the 11th, took over at the top with a birdie on the 15th.
First the Barcelona player pitched into the edge of the lake, splashed out over the green and duffed a chip - as he did on the 17th to drop another shot.
Then Dredge, suddenly back in front, made a total hash of his pitch to the 16th as well. He was lucky to avoid the water, but also went over the green and his chip back almost ran into the hazard.
His six left him needing an albatross on the last to tie. Argentina's Rafa Echenique got one on the hole last year, but the best Dredge could do was birdie.
Horsey, winner of the "second division" Challenge Tour in his first full season as a professional, said: "It's unbelievable and it's not sunk in yet."

Clark Brechin wins Jaffrey Cup match-play title

Portlethen's Clark Brechin won the North-east District's match-play golf title at Turriff today - and then, in his winner's speech, dedicated the victory to his brother Greg who was killed in a recent car accident.
The Jaffrey Cup features the four players with the best two-round stroke-play totals in the previous day's Journal Cup tournament.
Brechin was the top seed with rounds of 70 and 67 for 137.
Anthony Bews (Murcar Links) had a pair of 69s for 138.
John Duff (Newmachar) qualified in third place with 71 and 69 for 140.
Ross Young (Nigg Bay) completed the quartet with 74 and 67 for 141.
In the semi-finals, Bechin beat Young by 3 and 2 while Duff beat Bews 2 and 1.
Duff looked odds-on the title winner when he was one up with two to play in the final, but he missed two putts from under 3ft to lose both the 17th and the 18th, giving Brechin a one-hole victory.

Semi-finals
Clark Brechin (Portlethen) bt Ross Young (Nigg Bay) 3 and 2
John Duff (Newmachar) bt Anthony Bews (Murcar Links) 2 and 1.

Final
Brechin bt Duff 1 hole.
