Darren Wright takes Brabazon Trophy lead on windy day

FROM THE ENGLISH GOLF UNION WEBSITE
The wind blew nobody much good at Royal Liverpool in the third round of the Brabazon Trophy, supported by SkyCaddie, but Darren Wright wore the widest smile after what many would say was another difficult day over the links.
Wright, 21, from Hampshire, (picture © Tom Ward) went round in 72 for 213, three under par, one ahead of overnight leader Tyrrell Hatton, from Marlow, who shot 74, and Boston-based Simon Richardson with 69, one of only two sub-par rounds of the day.
But many of the tournament favourites suffered in the testing breeze that swung around during the day and presented the players with even more puzzles to solve.
But Wright, out in the final game with Hatton, was out in 34 and ahead and came home in 38 which was good enough to hit the front.
“After yesterday’s four under I was looking to do the same today but looking at the pins and the hardness of the greens I would have taken level par at the start,” said Wright. “I found a couple of bunkers on the back nine and like any links course you are almost certain to drop shots but I felt in control and I’m happy to be leading.
“I wanted to be ahead at this stage. I’ve got the experience to deal with it and although I’ve been in the last group in a few tournaments I’ve never been leading and won. But I’ll be comfortable and I’ll stick to my game plan and try to make the most of the par fives.”
Hatton, one clear going into the day, covered both nines in 37 to lose his advantage while Richardson took advantage to climb the leaderboard to third place. He put his 69 down mainly to his putting.
“I’ve holed so much this week and it was the same today,” he said. “This is a great course and the greens are fantastic. Top courses seem to bring the best out of me but my putting was phenomenal. I had 23 putts today, the same as I had on the first day.”
This is the first year that Richardson has played full time golf. The 24 year old has been in full time education but is enjoying a really steady season while working part-time in the pro shop at his club Boston West.
England international Billy Hemstock also shot level par for 217, one over, for joint fourth place with Frenchman Clement Berardo, who signed for 73.
The best return was a six-birdie 68 from Scotland’s Michael Stewart from Troon, a score that must have raised the eyebrows of many of his fellow competitors, to share seventh place with Chris Paisley with 74.
But there was a lot of pain felt by others. Tommy Fleetwood reached the turn in 37 but shed eight shots in a homeward 44 for 81 to slip down the field, suffering a bad day at the office. And it was a similar story for fellow England cap Jamie Abbott and St Andrews Links Trophy winner Matt Southgate.
Abbott, two off the lead at the start, went round in 80 for 222, while Southgate also suffered with 79 which included a back nine of 45. “And I did it with an eagle and two birdies. I just played horrible,” he admitted.
Play starts at 7.30am on the last day (Sunday) and admission is free. For those unable to attend, live scoring and news updates are available on the Championships Section of the EGU website, http://www.englishgolfunion.org/.

Nervous Calcavecchia mades Champions Tour debut with a 67

ENDICOTT, New York -- Mark Calcavecchia likely won't forget his first round on the Champions Tour.
A bundle of nerves after having two different kinds of balls in his bag and no pin sheet at the first hole in the Dick's Sporting Goods Open, Calcavecchia settled down and shot a 5-under 67 on Friday and was just two shots behind leader Wayne Levi.
"I'm just playing pretty good. Thank God. Good timing for me."
Levi shot a 7-under 65 and had a one-shot lead over Brad Bryant and Dan Forsman. Calcavecchia, vying to become just the 16th player to win his first start on the Champions Tour, was tied for fourth with defending champion Lonnie Nielsen, Fred Funk, Olin Browne and Blaine McCallister.
Ken Green, in just his second start in a stroke-play event since an RV crash a year ago resulted in the loss of the lower part of his right leg, finished at 6-over 78 after playing the first 12 holes at even par.
Calcavecchia had five birdies and no bogeys, moving into contention with a string of three birdies to start the back nine. He hit sand wedge to 3 feet at No. 10, chipped in from 40 feet at No. 11 after hitting 9-iron left of the green, and two-putted for birdie at the 545-yard, par-5 12th hole, which ranked as the easiest hole of the day.
The 58-year-old Levi, who was born in Little Falls and still has a home in upstate New York, matched his lowest round in three years, and he, too, was elated.
"Nice to be here. It's been a long time," said Levi, the PGA Tour player of the year two decades ago.
Levi had seven birdies and no bogeys on a somewhat breezy, sun-splashed day at En-Joie Golf Club. After saving par at the first hole, he began to find his range, hitting a 7-iron to 12 feet at No. 3 and making the putt for birdie.
A pitching wedge to within a foot of the pin at the par-4 ninth hole set up a tap-in birdie that put Levi at 3 under, and he made four birdies on the back side to reach the top of the leaderboard.
Levi has been there before at En-Joie. He won the B.C. Open here in 1984, and the short, narrow course, very firm on this day, suited his game. Levi, who ranks second on the Champions Tour in driving accuracy percentage (83.9 percent), hit 11 of 14 fairways and reached 16 of 18 greens in regulation.
"A course like this is made for me," said Levi, who underwent double bypass surgery last year and made his return at this tournament, finishing in a tie for 33rd. "Even when your game's kind of crummy and you're not playing worth a darn, you come to these spots and bingo, you hit good shots and you have a good feeling. It just comes to you."
Bryant birdied seven of the first 10 holes to tie for the lead, parred the next seven, then bogeyed 18 to fall back to second.
"I actually hit the ball almost as well on the back nine as I did on the front nine. I just didn't make any putts," Bryant said. "I hit the edge (of the hole) a lot. The ball just didn't go in. Starting out, I just happened to really play well for a stretch of holes. All in all, it was a pretty good day up until the last hole.
"If I had parred the last hole, I'd have a lot better attitude," said Bryant, who had a closing 76 to fall into a tie for 23rd at the Senior PGA Championship a month ago. "Right now, I'm pretty frustrated because I've finished poorly so many times this year."
Green started well, nearly making an 8-foot birdie putt at No. 1, one of the most difficult holes on the course. He followed that with bogey at the 379-yard, par-4 second hole, a dogleg left, when he flubbed his second shot into the left trees after a perfect drive and was unable to get up and down from a slope behind the green.
Green made it back to even par with a birdie at the par-5 12th hole and was just two shots behind Bill Glasson and one shot behind Gene Jones, his playing partners. But he faltered in the closing holes, making double bogey at the par-4 13th hole and bogeys at each of the final four holes.
"That's the game sometimes. I was like, all right, maybe I can do it, get started," Green said. "I'm desperately trying to break par for one round. I'll feel like I'm making strides. It didn't work out. I'm not going to moan because, damn, there were some bad breaks on those last few holes. But that's the nature of the game sometimes. It beats you up."
Chalk it up to nerves. Green was met with polite applause at every turn as he hobbled on his prosthetic leg.
"I was a little tense. That's got to come down a little," he said. "It's hard to play good golf when that fraction of tension is with you. If you don't relax, you're doomed in this game. We've just got to keep fighting."

Tomasulo and Staten tied for Nationwide Tour lead

FROM THE PGA.COM WEBSITE
LEON, Mexico -- Peter Tomasulo began Friday with a one-stroke lead, and when he missed a short par putt on the final hole, he found himself tied at the top of the leaderboard with B.J. Staten at 9 under par after two rounds of the Bicentary Mexico Open. Tomasulo and Staten are a shot ahead of Californian Jamie Lovemark (71) and Madalitso Muthiya (68) of Zambia in the Nationwide Tour's $600,000 event.
Doug LaBelle (66) and Hunter Haas (69) share fifth place at 7-under 137.
"I gave one back on the last hole, which is pretty frustrating," said Tomasulo, who played in 25 PGA Tour events in 2009. "It's funny because I thought I was doing the smart thing by laying up with a bad lie in the rough."
Tomasulo had just 80 yards from the middle of the fairway for his third shot on the 567-yard, par-5 18th hole. His approach shot to the green was 35 long and he rolled his birdie putt to three feet and lipped out the par putt.
"All the trouble I've gotten into this week is from going too long with my approach shots," he said. "The elevation is tough to figure out and I'm hoping I'll make the right adjustment for tomorrow."
The former University of California at Berkley graduate hasn't won on the Nationwide Tour since the 2005 Alberta Classic.
"I'm feeling good and I'm playing well," he said. "I haven't been in this spot in a while and it's nice to be back here."
Staten, on the other hand, was in this position a few weeks ago headed into the final round of the Nationwide Tour's Melwood Prince George's County Open. He ended up shooting 6-over-par 77 and finished tied for 30th.
"It's too early to tell if I learned anything from that experience," said the lefty. "I know I had a bad attitude during the final round and my goal this week is to keep a positive attitude."
Staten's best finish on the Nationwide Tour was second place at the 2007 LaSalle Bank Open. Earlier this year he finished tied for third at the weather-shortened Rex Hospital Open.
"My game feels really good right now and I'm excited to play," added Staten. "I've played well in the last few events and I'm hoping to take that momentum into the rest of the Nationwide Tour schedule."
Lovemark already has four top-10 finishes this year and is No. 10 on the money list with $139,351. Just like Tomasulo, he struggled with the elevation change at El Bosque Country Club.
"When the wind is blowing as hard as it is and you're at 6,800 feet above sea level, it's tough to get the right yardages," said Lovemark. "I think I hit the wrong club at least eight times today."
Muthiya is playing in his first Nationwide Tour event of the year. He has been playing in mini tour events up until this point to keep his competitive edge.
"It's served me well so far out there," said the first Zambian to play in the 2006 U.S. Open. "I've shot under par in all my rounds and made all the cuts, but I haven't won."

Justin Rose leads by four after five birdies in a row

FROM THE PGA.COMWEBSITE
CROMWELL, Connecticut -- Justin Rose shot an 8-under 62 in the second round of the Travelers Championship Friday, birdieing five consecutive, back-nine holes to take a four-stroke lead over Kevin Sutherland.
Rose, the Memorial winner three weeks ago who failed to qualify for the U.S. Open last week at Pebble Beach, broke the tournament record for the first 36 holes, finishing at 14-under 126. The 62 was one off the course record at TPC River Highlands.
"Yesterday's finish was amazing, ran five birdies in the last six and then again today, managed to get five in a row again," said Rose, an Englishman who started his second round on the 10th tee. "Birdied 10 of the 12 holes, so from just cruising, suddenly I went to the top of the leaderboard just like that and began to get a nice little lead there."
Sutherland shot his second straight 65. Vijay Singh (66), Corey Pavin (66), Bill Lunde (63) and Charlie Wi (67) were five strokes back at 9 under.
After making 162 PGA Tour starts without winning, Rose broke through at the Memorial three weeks ago. This was his first start since.
"I think I'm just on a nice streak," Rose said. "I'm not getting in my way. I'm letting it happen. It's nice to not field the question, 'Can this be your first win?' I must say. That helps. Having done that, that's one question that it's just something less that I have to think about.
"Winning a tournament in its own right is difficult. So, when you have the added expectation of it trying to be your first, that can be harder sometimes."
Sutherland won't be complaining about consistency after his 65s.
"I'm very pleased. I've hit the ball very well," Sutherland said. "I've had 10 birdies for the two days and haven't had a bogey yet. I'm playing real consistent, real solid."
Lunde eagled Nos. 13 and 15 on his way to 63.
"That's something on this golf course," said Lunde, who also started on the 10th tee. "On the back nine, you got some opportunities to make some eagles and make a lot of birdies. It's nice to get off to a quick start, to get the momentum going early."
Singh birdied his first two holes then settled for a string of seven pars while Pavin's birdie bid on the ninth hole, his last of the day, stopped just short of going in the hole.
"It's all fine by me," Pavin said. "I've been here a long time. I guess the ones who are still alive are still cheering for me."
All eight of Rose's birdie putts were inside 11 feet. His putts on the 13th and 15th holes were tap-in birdies after a pair of clutch chip shots.
"Really, I felt under-prepared coming in here," Rose said. "I got to tell you. Didn't do a lot of practice. I'm doing a lot of things well. My feel's really good.
"For a while, I was chasing results because I knew I was playing well, instead of just letting it happen," he continued. "So, it's a very fine line out here. It's very subtle, and I haven't really changed much. Suddenly, my name's up there, and you think, 'Well, what's different?' But really, nothing is different. It's just suddenly happening."
