Welshman Rhys Enoch, shared the lead at North Berwick

East Tennessee State team-mates Enoch, Stewart in the van

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE RandA
Fourteen players from ten different nations lie in tied fifth place or above at the conclusion of the first day of the 2010 Amateur Championship. Four players are tied-first after signing for four-under-par 67s at a blustery North Berwick: Wales’ Rhys Enoch, Scot Michael Stewart, Ian Winstanley of England and Spain’s Emilio Cuartero.
Welshman Rhys Enoch, winner of the NCAA East regional qualifier last month representing East Tennessee State University, put together a faultless round of four birdies and no bogeys to share the lead at the halfway stage of stroke-play qualifying.
The 21-year-old said: “I’m playing well. It’s just getting through the stroke play, hopefully, and then going one game at a time.”
“I played the 2008 Home Internationals at Muirfield and I think it’s a course that suits me, so I’m looking forward to playing there tomorrow.”
Fellow East Tennessee State student Michael Stewart, pictured right, has won two collegiate events during his time in the USA, most recently the Coca Cola Wofford Invitational in April. Stewart, who finished tied-seventh at the St Andrews Links Trophy earlier this month, made five birdies to reach the turn in 31. His advantage was diminished when a bogey at 15 was followed by a double bogey at 16, but two consecutive birdies on 17 and 18 ensured he claimed a share of the lead.
“I played a tournament here [North Berwick] when I was 16, a Scottish Junior Tour event, which I won so I’ve got good memories round here,” said former Scottish Boys Champion, 20. “I love this golf course.”
“I’m playing nicely, so I’ll just keep playing my own game – take one shot at a time.”
2007 Boys Amateur Champion Cuartero started and finished the outward nine with birdies. Eight pars followed on the back nine, before he completed the round in the best possible style with an eagle at the last.
England’s Ian Winstanley, who missed the cut at his home club of Formby at the 2009 Amateur, hit a driver to within 10 feet and holed for eagle on the 276-yard 18th at North Berwick to give himself the best possible chance of reaching the match play rounds this year.
“I played really solidly today. I didn’t hit many bad shots and, when I did, my short game saved me,” said Winstanley, the 2009 British University and College Golf Champion.
“I’ve been playing really well recently, so I had high hopes coming into the week and I’ll go into tomorrow with tons of confidence.”
Northern Irishman Alan Dunbar, the 2010 Irish Amateur Open Champion, lies one stroke behind after a 68 at North Berwick. He is joined by Scotland’s highest-ranked player, James Byrne; Germany’s Maximilian Kieffer, who birdied five holes in a row today at North Berwick from the third to the eighth; Edouard Espana from France; Belgium’s Xavier Feyaerts; Laurie Canter of England; Norwegian Are Friestad and Germany’s Phillipp Westermann.
Also on 68 is Australia’s Kieran Pratt, the man who shot the lowest round of the day at Muirfield.
“It’s my first event here and I absolutely love Muirfield,” said Pratt, who won three tournaments in a row – the Dunes Medal, the Port Phillip Amateur and the Victorian Amateur Match Play – at the end of 2009. “It’s a fair, tough course, and it’s a joy to play here.
“I need to play the same tomorrow: lots of irons off the tees and, if I can hole a few putts like today, I should be ok.”
Play gets underway at 7am on Tuesday morning at Muirfield and North Berwick. 288 players are playing two rounds of stroke play, one each at Muirfield and North Berwick, before 64 players and ties progress to the match play rounds beginning on Wednesday at Muirfield.

It's Edmond v Cruickshank in Aberdeen Links final

By DAVID GRIEVE
Royal Aberdeen Medal winner Barrie Edmond (Bon Accord| continued his progress to the final of this year's Aberdeen Links Championships with a 3 and 2 win over Caley's Lee Morrice in the semi-finals this evening.
In a tight encounter Lee drew first blood with a 30ft putt from off the green for a birdie 2 at the third, followed by a gutsy 15-footer for a half at the fourth.
Edmond came storming back to take holes 7, 8 and 9 with an eagle-par-birdie to be two up at the turn. A poor drive at the 11th let Lee back in but a birdie at 13 and a magnificent three-wood to 10ft at the 15th saw Edmond move to three up with three to play and a par at 16 was good enough to take him into Friday's final.
.The other semi-final was a real ding-dong battle between Caley clubmates Alex Cruickshank and Barrie Reid. The second and third holes were traded to par figures before Cruickshank forged two ahead with pars at 6 and 7.
Reid fought back with a birdie 3 at the eighth and a winning par at the ninth to turn all square. Reid went on up with a 25ft putt for birdie on 13 only for Alex to square it at the 15th.
At 17 Reid put his first ball out of bounds and almost made birdie with his second for a half  but lipped out for Cruickshank to go dormie one. Barry put that mishap behind him to hit a superb tee shot to 18 ft at the last and sank the putt to take the to extra holes.
Alex showed his vast experience to reach another final by winning at the 20th hole.
In the Handicap Shield, Chris Laing of Caley came through in a tense encounter against Cameron Johnstone of Northern. Three up after eight holes, Chris looked on easy street but a great comeback from Cameron saw him square it at 14. Chris then re-grouped to birdie the 15th and three halves were enough to squeeze him through at the last hole.
Lainge will play Matt Smith of Bon-Accord after he beat clubmate Willie Shand 4 and 3. Willie won the opening two holes but was clawed back to all square after five holes. Smith then won the next five holes to take a commanding lead and ended the tie on the 15th green.
The Murray Cup final will be contested by Frank Kennedy (Bon Accord) and John Hosie (Northern). Frank had a comfortable 7 and 6 victory over Northern's John Hay while John was pushed all the way by 14-year- old Mark Rimmer.
Showing tremendous spirit, Mark was three down after 11 but won the 14th,17th and 18th holes where he hit a tremendous tee shot to 25ft and drained the putt to go to extra holes. John kept his nerve to par the first extra hole to progress.

Chalmers beats MacBeath in Sutherland county title play-off

By ROBIN WILSON
Royal Dornoch's Panmure-based member Dougall Chalmers won the Sutherland county championship for a second time at Golspie, beating former winner James MacBeath (Brora) in a three hole play-off.
Chalmers had previously won in 1999 and was a bronze medallist in 1988 while MacBeath won the silver medal in 2003 and bronze on five other occasions.
When these two players last faced each other in a trophy situation, last August's final of the Clynelish Shield at Brora, it was MacBeath who emerged with the silverware but at Golspie it was revenge time for the 53-year-old Chalmers who took the first step of downing his opponent with a birdie 4 on the opening hole of the play-off and followed up with two more 4s to win the three hole shoot-out.
The weather began cold and wet for the early starters in the field of 45 and when the first round was completed there was a surprise leader, Royal Dornoch's five handicapper, Bryan Urquhart. Urquhart brought in a one under par 69 (35-34) with the help of an eagle 3 at the par-5 fourth hole and a birdie on the seventh to be out in one under par. Two birdies, at the 13th and 14th, and two bogeys, at the 16th and 17th, squared of his inward card to 34.
While Urquhart was doing his bit to keep the cup in Dornoch for a sixth consecutive year, clubmate Chris Mailley was ruling himself out of a winning hat-trick year with a soul-destroying first nine-hole count of eight-over-par 44 with only one par figure on his card.
But following his double bogey at the ninth, the holder then showed true champion's character by scoring level par for his next 27 holes and eventually finished in a very creditable fifth place with 78 and 70 for 148.
Closing up behind Urquhart's first-round one-shot lead were Chalmers, level-par 70 (36-34), MacBeath 71 (36-35) and a third Dornoch member, Neil Munro 72 (38-34).
In the mix to win his first major title since joining Royal Dornoch was the 1972 Scottish Stroke-play champion Bert Nicholson with a 73 (35-38) and behind him twice former winner Brora's Roddie Cameron 75 (37-38).
By the afternoon the rain had cleared but a stiff westerly wind became the problem. Urquhart was still a threat with an acceptable outward two over par 38 but the first sign of stress protecting his lead was shown by the five handicapper at the 14th hole when he took four to get down from the edge of the green and the subsequent bogey 6 was immediately followed by another 6 on his card.
The best he could post ahead of the chasing bunch was a 77 (38-39) for a clubhouse target of 146. Eventually he was overtaken and fell back to fourth place but he took away the consolation of leading the nett returns on 136 and leaving behind the altered Golspie course with its first record score of 69 since the first hole became a par-5 and the 15th hole lengthened.
Neil Munro then briefly led on 144 after repeating his opening 72 with two birdie 2s in his last nine holes, the 10th and seventeenth, giving him an inward 33 to recover from his outward 39. A fine effort from Munro who is now proving to be the best of the young generation coming out of Royal Dornoch.Next leader in the clubhouse was Chalmers who finished with bogey 5 for 72 (37-35) leaving him with the anxious wait for MacBeath, the one other player still out on the course who could catch or better his 142 target. Early in his second round the Brora champion birdied the second hole but in a repeat of his costly 5 in the eventual play-off he bogeyed the third hole and with a bogey at the ninth was one over par.
He remained one over par facing Golspie's difficult three finishing holes but made par at all three to turn in another 71 (37-34) and force the play-off..
Chalmers last win at Golspie also came after a play-off. In 1999, coincidently the same year as he won his first County Cup, he beat an ex-Dornoch clubmate, Stuart Shaw, in extra holes to win the 54 hole Golspie Classic. With caddy Glen Herbertson, a former three time Sutherland junior champion, despatched to the car for the clubs, Chalmers found the green at the par-5 opening hole and, after a ropey first putt, holed the next to strike first with a birdie 4. MacBeath levelled at the second when Chalmers was bunkered and the Brora member looked favourite at the third hole after a long drive put him within a short iron of the green.
Chalmers came up just short of the green but MacBeath did not do his drive justice, hitting his wedge shot short and left almost into a bunker. He had to stand in the bunker to play his third which he did pretty successfully to within five feet but leaving a slippery downhiller for his 4. From the front of the green Chalmers rolled his third up to two feet. MacBeath missed the putt for 4and Chalmers found the middle of the cup for his third 4 and well deserved second title 11 years after his last celebration.
Urquhart, with a net 136, was first handicap followed by two of the 17 entries from the home club, Jamie Oliver and John Cameron.
In charge of the presentation on behalf of the North District was Golspie Captain, John Davies and in the winner's speech Chalmers praised Golspie head greenkeeper Alex MacDonald for the turn around in the condition and alterations carried out to the course since he has been in charge.

Royal Dornoch champion Lyle McAlpine is Ross county champion

Immediate past North District Youth Champion, Lyle McAlpine (Invergordon) won the Royal Dornoch club championship the previous weekend by turning in a final round card of two under par 68 to deny by one stroke the champion for the past two years, overseas member John Lindberg (Sweden), a hat-trick of winning years.
McAlpine won with a 72-hole total of 286 (72 73 73 68) then chose his native county (Ross-shire) to play in and win the Ross-shire county championship last weekend.
With a shocking entry of only 20 at Tain, McAlpine returned 74 and 71 to win his first county title by a stroke from Alan Cameron (Fortrose and Rosemarkie) (72-74). Third place went to local Billy Ferries 74 74 for 148.

John Forbes win Inverness county title for second time
The Inverness county championship, played over the par 70 Newtonmore course, was won for a second time by Inverness's John Forbes (24) on the back of a first round five under par 65.
Forbes added a second round 69 to win by five from the 2000 champion and club mate Bruce Thomson. Thomson taking a double bogey 6 from just 80 yards at the ninth hole in his first round 72 left him too much to do in his second round 67. He took the runners-up medal with 139.
Local member Jordan Shaw broke an Inverness top three with 72 and 71 for 143. In fourth place came Inverness's Jamie Treasurer on 144 (75 69).

Craig Hamilton beats Craig Watson in mid-am final

Craig Hamilton from Ballochmyle Golf Club, near Mauchline, Ayrshire is the new Scottish mid-amateur golf champion.
He beat the pre-tournament favourite and No 2 seed, Craig Watson, playing over his home course at East Renfrewshire Golf Club, by 3 and 2 in the 18-hole final.
Hamilton, the No 4 qualifier from the stroke-play stages, was four under par and never looked back after winning the second, third and fourth with a par-birdie-birdie run.
A birdie 4 at the eighth increased his lead to four and Watson did not win a hole until the ninth – and it required a birdie 3 to do it!
Hamilton restored his four-hole advantage with a birdie 3 at the 19th but was pulled back to only two up when he bogeyed the 11th and Watson birdied he short 13th.
That was as good as it got for Watson, the first winner of this tournament in 1994 and winner of the British amateur title in 1997.
The 14th was halved in par 4s, the 15th in birdie 4s before Hamilton produced his sixth birdie of the round to finish the match at the 16th. Watson was only one over par for the holes played.
Today's results:
Semi-finals – Craig Hamilton (Ballochmyle) bt Scott Ritchie (New Zealand) 1 hole; Craig Watson (East Renfrewshire) bt Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon) 2 and 1.
Final – Hamilton bt Watson 3 and 2.

HUGH HUNTER'S CLACKMANNAN COUNTY NEWS

THRILLING MATCH-PLAY FINAL
The small group of spectators and supporters at Tulliallan last Thursday were treated to a top class final in the 2010 Clackmannan County Golf Union Match Play Championship. Both players were round in under par.
The closely-contested match between Michael Robertson (Alva) and Darren Hulston (Dollar) produced high quality golf shots ranging from powerful drives - Darren hit an uphill drive at the 14th (Muckle Clure) that was just short of 300 yards--- to accurate irons, and outstanding pitching and putting. Michael Robertson came out ahead, perhaps with just the more consistent play, giving Alva their first county match-play Champion for a good number of years.
On the outward nine, Michael held the advantage with a two-hole lead at the turn, thanks to birdies at the short sixth and 8th where a short iron over trees finished close. Darren held the deficit right to the closing holes with good short game play. He just missed a putt on the last green which would have taken the match into extra holes.
Michael held his nerve and resisted this charge. A particularly good shot of his was a pitch at the 15th, judged perfectly to bounce off the bank and release on to the green close to the pin to ensure a half in par 3.
Result:
FINAL -  Michael Robertson (Alva) beat Darren Hulston (Dollar) 1 hole
As a result of this fine performance, Michael should get an invite to the 2011 Champion of Champions at Leven in April.

WEE COUNTY WELL UP IN SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS

In the 2010 Scottish Schools Golf Championships at the Murrayshall courses, the Clackmannan representatives from Alva Academy put in a good performance, finishing sixth in the team event out of 27 Local Authority areas.
Top performer in the 36 hole event was Lawrence Allan with a 148 (70, 78) followed by Kevin Ross 152 (75,77) and Scott Baird (78,75). With all scores counting, this gave a team total of 453 some way behind winners South District with a winning aggregate of 423.

LAWRENCE KEEPS IN TOUCH
Alva’s Lawrence Allan has had a busy week, finishing with the 36 hole last SGU Junior Tour event this year, played at Kilmarnock Barassie on Sunday. In a field of 39 containing all the top Scottish boys, Lawrence finished 14th equal, ahead of several older and more experienced boy golfers.
His aggregate of 152 (77, 75) contained 5 birdies all at the par 5’s, and he must be reasonably confident for the Scottish Under 16’s event coming up at the beginning of July

BRAEHEAD BOYS LOOKING GOOD
The Clackmannan County Boys League is underway, and following on from their success in the County Junior Boys Championship, the Braehead boys are making their presence felt.  They had a good home win over Alloa last weekend by 4 matches to 1 with one half.

SCOTTISH MID AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
The only Clackmannan County representative Phil Dempsey (Tulliallan) just missed out qualifying for the Match Play stages. His two round aggregate of 148 (71, 77) over the East Renfrewshire course was two shots too many for a top sixteen place and a chance to win the 2010 title.

CALLUM FINDS GOLFING FORM
Tulliallan’s Callum Macaulay must have been pleased to find some golfing form returning in the Scottish Hydro Challenge last week. His closing round over the par 71, 7100 yard course was a 4 under par 67 and lifted him well up the field resulting in a four round score of 277 (72, 68, 70, 67) and a share of 11th position. This good performance should also lift his Challenge Tour ranking considerably from his present 93rd position, and much closer to where he needs to be at the end of the season. Callum is due to play in the rescheduled Moroccan Golf Classic this week

On the left is runner-up Stuart Tatters, also of Moray Golf Club. On the right is Colin Mackay (Forres), the handicap award winner.
Clarke had rounds of 69 and 65 for a total of 134, five shots ahead of Tatters (69-70).
Grant Stuart (Forres) was third on 140 (69-71) with Jeff Wright (74-68), Ross Proctor (69-73) and Ian Allan (69-73) joint fourth on 142 - one shot ahead of Kevin Thomson (72-71) with K Godsman (75-69) next on 144.

Glover and Villegas sign up for Loch Lomond

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE EUROPEAN TOUR
Reigning US Open Champion Lucas Glover and the talented Colombian Camilo Villegas will join Masters Champion Phil Mickelson in spearheading a transatlantic charge to The 2010 Barclays Scottish Open.
With Mickelson having already confirmed his intention to return to Loch Lomond Golf Club from July 8-11, Glover – the man who pipped him to the 2009 US Open title and who will defend his crown at Pebble Beach this week – will now take his place alongside the World Number Two when the 28th edition of the £3million event unfolds.
Glover, the World Number 21, is excited at the prospect of making his first visit to Loch Lomond, where he will be hoping to sharpen his competitive instincts ahead of The 150th Anniversary Open Championship, which takes place at St Andrews one week later.
“I’m really looking forward to playing in The Barclays Scottish Open for the first time,” he said. “I’ve heard great things about the tournament and the golf course, so I’m excited about experiencing them first hand.”
World Number 15 Villegas, who lives in Florida and who has won twice on the US PGA Tour, will be making his second visit to Loch Lomond Golf Club, having finished in a tie for 20th place behind winner Martin Kaymer of Germany on his maiden appearance last year.
Like Glover, the Colombian – who finished 30th in The 2009 Race to Dubai, thanks largely to his tied fifth finishes at the WGC-CA Championship and the Volvo World Match Play Championship – will also be bidding to give his confidence a timely lift as he prepares for his third appearance at The Open Championship, with tied 13th in 2009 his best performance to date.
He said: “I really enjoyed my first visit to The Barclays Scottish Open last year – it was a great week on a fantastic golf course. So I’m delighted to be returning this year, and I would love to add my name to the impressive list of past champions.”
That roll call includes Tom Lehman, who was the last American to take the title in 1997. Lehman, who will be one of American Captain Corey Pavin’s assistants at The 2010 Ryder Cup, heads to Scotland in fine form, having recently captured his maiden senior Major at the US Senior PGA Championship.
“Loch Lomond is one of my favourite golf courses in the world, and the Scottish Open one of my favourite tournaments,” he said. “There is nowhere I’d rather be each year in early July.”
Lehman will be joined in the field by his fellow US Champions Tour winner Fred Funk and rising US PGA Tour star Nick Watney, who will be bidding to build on his tied sixth finish on his debut appearance at The Barclays Scottish Open last year.
Watney said: “I’m really looking forward to returning to Loch Lomond, having played the tournament for the first time last year. It was a great week on a fantastic golf course so I can’t wait to get back, and I’m delighted to see so many of my fellow US Tour pros will be joining me.”
Other Americans who will be making the trip to Glasgow include J B Holmes and Heath Slocum, both of whom will be making their debuts at Loch Lomond Golf Club, which is hosting the event for the 15th year in succession.
“I’m really excited at having the opportunity to play in The Barclays Scottish Open this year,” said Holmes. “I’ve heard great things about the event from my fellow pros, and I’m delighted to be joining the world-class field on the banks of Loch Lomond in July. It will be my first time on this fantastic golf course, and I can’t wait to experience the atmosphere which is always present in front of the wonderful Scottish fans.”
