Tiger to play in 36-hole pro-am in Ireland week before Open

Tiger Woods will play his first tournament outside of the United States this year at a charity pro-am in Ireland.
Tournament officials say Woods has agreed to play in the event organised by Irish businessman and racehorse owner J.P. McManus.
The 36-hole pro-am on July 5 and 6 will be held at Adare Manor, a former Irish Open venue, the week before the Open at St. Andrews.
Woods said in a statement released by the organisers that because of his own foundation he understands “the importance and necessity of raising funds to help deserving individuals.”

Steven Hume has a 76 in the heat of Italy

Gavin Dear is competing in the Scottish Hydro Challenge at Aviemore this week so his Perthshire colleague, Steven Hume, is the only Scot competing in this week's Alps Tour/Italian Pro Tour event, Le Fonti Open at Golf Club de Fonti. Steven had a four-over-par 76.

FROM THE ALPS TOUR WEBSITE
Frenchman Alan Bihan proved again he deserved his leading place at Alps Tour order of merit. Today Bihan shot a seven-under-par 65 to lead by two strokes in the heat of Bologna, Italy. Sharing second place are Italian Marco Cidonio and Spaniard Moises Cobo.
Cobo was co-leader in the clubhouse after half of field finished their round. The 26 year old rookie -he just turned pro eight months ago- did play solid golf.
“I hit the ball very well. I hit 16 greens in regulation and had seven birdies. I was in Austria on Challenge Tour last week and I did well there too. I am part of the Spanish group managed by Federation and the deal is that we, six players, get seven invitations to the Challenge Tour and some on Tour. I will share my time between all circuits and see what is going on.”
Morning session players had about two hours to play in favourable conditions. Then the temperature started to get high around 11 o'clock, rising over 30 degrees Centigrade. In the middle of the fairways, Golf de Fonti was like an oven.
But Alan Bihan is used to deal with these kind of temperature. The Frenchman was born in Brazil, then moved to Chile when he was six and only come back to France in 1997. Bihan has been playing on the Alps Tour for four years and his father is carrying the bag on each tournament. Father and son are doing well working together.
“I played today as well as I did in Paris but here I holed the putts so obviously it makes a difference. I am playing good golf since the beginning of the season and honestly the best decision we made was to move back to Chile. People are so nice and welcoming. I have a big support of Golf Club Las Brisas de Chicureo and I can play Pacific Tour to practice during winter in Europe.
"We are a group of five or six players including Felipe Aguilar. We practise together and it really helps me. Of course the target is to stay in the first five of each Alps Tour event and maybe keep the lead."
Projected cut mark is two over par after the second round.

Mearns Castle’s Scott Herald had a good day to share the lead with a one-under-par 70 in this week’s PGA EuroPro Tour event, the Dawson & Sanderson Classic, at Longhirst Hall Golf Club, Northumberland.

Palmer, Nicklaus, Player raise record $15.1million for charity

They were once known collectively as "The Big Three." Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player individually remain big draws. Together they're a mesmerising trio on a golf course.
They combined earlier this week to raise just over $15.1 million at an event titled the "Big Three for Mountain Mission Kids." It was the single biggest fund-raising day in US PGA Tour history and the first public event at the Olde Farm Club in Virginia.
The previous mark was estimated to be about $8.5 million by PGA Tour officials. Organizers had hoped to raise at least $12 million for the Mountain Mission School, an 89-year-old school for needy children.
Nicklaus said the three of them had raised money all over the world, but he had never seen a group as philanthropic as this once.
"To be here today to set an all-time record is very, very special," Nicklaus said.
The fund-raising continued to the very end. As soon as the 19-hole scramble was over, someone paid $6,000 for the gloves worn by the group on the final hole.
"Americans are such tremendous givers," Player said.
And so were the golfers, playing to the crowd like a links version of the Rat Pack.
Player played MC and comedian, noting Palmer drove the ball so well in his heyday that Palmer only left the fairway to answer the telephone. Palmer called Player quite a talker, a man with deep pockets and short arms.
"Gary Player is so cheap he wouldn't give ducks a free drink if he owned Lake Okeechobee," Palmer said to laughs.
But Player's stories are priceless, recalling how he met Elvis Presley once and his critique of how new equipment is making golf courses obsolete. And when Player stops briefly, Nicklaus steps in with timing as slick as any straight man.
"I've heard them all 100 times," he said of Player's stories. "I just turn my hearing aid off."
But fans couldn't get enough.
Even Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt was in the gallery, getting an autograph from Player before introducing herself to Nicklaus. She followed the trio around this reclusive course tucked away atop the mountains near the Virginia-Tennessee border even as people asked her for her own autograph.
All three golfers are members at The Olde Farm, an exclusive club carved out of farmland off a quiet country road back in 2000. Privacy and escape are the biggest assets for members like four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champ Jimmie Johnson, the Mannings -- Archie and sons Peyton and Eli, South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier and baseball Hall of Famer George Brett.
That membership helped this high-dollar fund-raiser dream big to endow the Mountain Mission School in nearby Grundy, Virginia. Founded in 1921, the school is funded only by donations and teaches nearly 300 needy children from as young as 18 months to as old as 20.
The event also featured a silent auction that included NFL jerseys from each of the Mannings in a single display case, a bat signed by Brett, spa getaways, signed footballs from Spurrier and new Tennessee coach Derek Dooley, Johnson's signed driving gloves from his 2009 title season, a VIP package at a Virginia Tech football game, tickets to Alabama-Tennessee football in October and a signed basketball from Kentucky men's basketball coach John Calipari.
Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer and former Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga also came out for the event.
But the biggest attraction? The three golfing legends miked up so fans could hear each quip on free radios handed out at the entrance.
Fans cheered every shot down the middle of the fairway and surged toward Palmer, Nicklaus and Player for autographs and photos between shots even as carts helped Palmer, 80, and Nicklaus, 70, around the course. Player, 74, signed as he walked.

Simon Khan gets late call into next week's US Open

England's Simon Khan has earned a late call-up into the 156-man field for next week's US Open at Pebble Beach.
Khan's surprise victory in the European Tour's flagship BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth three weeks ago did not earn him a place at Pebble Beach and he then lost in a qualifying play-off at Walton Heath the following day.
But the Essex golfer comes in as first reserve because Justin Rose, who lifted the Memorial Tournament in Ohio on Sunday, needed to have won at least one other US PGA Tour event in the past year to be given an exemption.
Khan, who will celebrate his 38th birthday the day before the championship, was already planning to travel to California in the hope of somebody pulling out.
His call-up completes a remarkable turn of events for the man who last November had to return to the Tour qualifying school and who was 471st in the world when he was given an invitation to Wentworth just three days before the tournament.

Waterford teenager qualifies for US Open

FROM THE IRISHTIMES.COM WEBSITE
His name may not resonate in the same manner as a Pádraig Harrington or a Rory McIlroy, but Waterford teenager Kevin Phelan will tee it up with the big boys at Pebble Beach after qualifying for the 110th US Open.
Phelan is on a scholarship at the University of North Florida and took his chance at qualifying at the McArthur Golf Club in Hobe Sound this week. Not only did he book his place in next week’s second major of the year, he did it with aplomb by closing with an eagle on the final hole of his second round 65.
The 19-year-old had opened with an average 73 in the 36-hole-qualifer but tied for first place (alongside Gary Woodland) with a second round 65 for a six-under 138 aggregate by holing his bunker shot on the 18th for eagle.
“It still hasn't sunk in yet. It might at some point. It feels pretty good to just have tied for first in the sectional,” said Phelan to the Florida Times Union afterwards.
Of his final shot from sand he added “it was a perfect shot'”.
The United States Golf Association (USGA) held 13 sectional sites for qualifying and amateur Phelan was one of three players to qualify from a field of 49 at the Florida venue.
The teenager was born in New York, where his father played professional squash, then moved to Waterford with his family aged three, before returning to the United States five years ago.
The US Open takes place at Pebble Beach next week (from June 17th-20th) when Phelan will he joined by Irish compatriots Padraig Harrington, Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell. American Lucas Glover is the defending champion.

YOUNG ITALIAN STAR IN FIELD AT AVIEMORE

Manassero looking to take up

Challenge to get on Euro Tour

NEWS RELEASE
Matteo Manassero has landed at the Scottish Hydro Challenge hoping that the Scottish Highlands will offer a gateway to a place on The European Tour.
The 17 year old Italian is making his first appearance on the Challenge Tour at the Macdonald Spey Valley Golf Course in Aviemore and is hoping to make a significant impression on the Rankings to propel himself towards The European Tour as one of the top 20 Challenge Tour players come the end of the season.
Manassero has emerged as one of golf’s hottest properties since becoming the youngest Amateur Champion in history last year before announcing his arrival on the world stage at The Open Championship at Turnberry, where he won the Silver Medal awarded to the leading amateur in the field by finishing in a tie for 13th spot.
He went on to confirm his talent at this year’s Masters Tournament, where, at the tender age of 16, he became the youngest player to make the cut at Augusta National. Manassero turned professional a few weeks after his Masters debut, taking his bow in the paid ranks at the BMW Italian Open where he finished in a tie for 29th place. He then played in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, finishing in a tie for 17th position.
“I am playing on the Challenge Tour because my main goal is to get my card for 2011 and this is another way to get it,” said the Italian. “It is good opportunity to have to play here - I plan to play seven events on the European Tour and seven on the Challenge Tour and hopefully I can get my card for next year’s European Tour through one way or the other.”
Manassero, who is still completing his school studies with private tutors and online lessons, does not feel any added pressure on his young shoulders having taken the golfing world by storm over the past 12 months.
“I don't feel any pressure from outside,” he continued. “I am pretty comfortable and not nervous about the expectations of other people. I am here to try and play my best and here to try and win.
“Becoming impatient is something that can happen. You could get to the top quick, maybe by winning two tournaments then maybe the results you expect don't come. Then you can be very impatient. I have a lot of time in front of me and I am sure that if I keep working hard and playing then the results will come. I feel they are coming already.”

Gallagher looking for confidence boost in

Scottish Hydro Challenge at Aviemore

FROM THE EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS WEBSITE
By Martin Dempster
John Gallagher is hoping this week's Scottish Hydro Challenge at Spey Valley can power up his season.
After two missed cuts on the PGA EuroPro Tour this season, the Swanston New man has headed up to Aviemore low on confidence. But he's hoping it will just take one good performance to get him firing on all cylinders again, and this would certainly be the week to do it.
The Challenge Tour event carries a prize fund of £165,000 and Gallagher, pictured left by Cal Carson Golf Agency, knows a strong showing in Speyside could lead to bigger and better things.
In the same event last year, Italian Edoardo Molinari finished second behind Fifer Jamie McLeary and has gone on to break into the top 50 in the world.
Third-placed Peter Whiteford is now doing well on the European Tour while Welshman Rhys Davies, who finished further down the field last year, is staking a strong claim to get into Colin Montgomerie's Ryder Cup side.
"If you are going to have a good week, this is certainly the week to do it," admitted Gallagher, the 2007 Scottish Amateur champion.
"The prize-money is a lot better and, if you finish in the top ten, you qualify for the next event on the Challenge Tour.
"This is definitely the week to get going and I will hopefully have a good one."
Gallagher, whose amateur exploits certainly helped put Swanston New on the map at a time when a lot of exciting changes were being made at the Capital club, admits life near the bottom of the ladder in the professional ranks has been far from easy.
But, helped by the support of some excellent sponsors, he's determined to keep plugging away and sees Whiteford as an example of how quickly things can turn around in golf.
"Peter was ready to jack it in not that long ago but his confidence was boosted by a couple of wins. Now he's on the European Tour and is one of the top Scottish players," he added.
"It is not impossible to do well and all I am lacking more than anything else at the moment is a bit of confidence."
Gallagher pinpoints inconsistency as the reason for his brace of missed cuts on this season's PGA EuroPro Tour but is hoping a session with coach Ian Rae yesterday would get him sorted.
"There's been some good stuff, which has been allowing me to make eagles and birdies, but equally I've been making too many mistakes that have been costing me double-bogeys," he said.
"It is hard to come back from them because it is a sprint on the EuroPro Tour.
"However, I'm definitely not dead in the water and feel my game isn't a million miles away from getting me back in there challenging again."
Thirty Scots are in the field at Macdonald Spey Valley, Aviemore. The 72-hole event starts tomorrow, and defending champion McLeary, who is attached to Marriott Dalmahoy, spearheads a strong Lothians contingent.
It also includes two of the Saltman brothers, Elliot and Lloyd, as well as Raymond Russell, Mark Kerr, Lee Harper and Shaun McAllister.

SCOTTISH HYDRO CHALLENGE WINNER TO EARN PLACE

IN JOHNNIE WALKER CHAMPIONSHIP AT GLENEAGLES

NEWS RELEASE
The winner of this week’s Scottish Hydro Challenge will receive an invitation to the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles in August.
In what is a huge coup for the European Challenge Tour event taking place at the Macdonald Spey Valley Golf Club this week, the winner of the €200,000 tournament in the highlands will also book a place alongside many of The European Tour’s biggest stars at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles from August 26-29.
Both tournaments are part of Scotland’s hugely impressive golfing portfolio this summer, with seven professional events, including the 150th Anniversary Open Championship at St Andrews, taking place in the country between this week and the end of August.
EventScotland, the lead agency for the delivery of The 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, have played a key role in the agreement between the Scottish Hydro Challenge and the Johnnie Walker Championship.
There will be extra focus at Gleneagles this year as it is where Colin Montgomerie will reveal his three Captains Picks to join the nine automatic qualifiers in his Ryder Cup Team to face the USA in Wales in October.
Tournament organisers, including Montgomerie who is the Championship Chairman to the Johnnie Walker tournament, are expecting an excellent field in August at the last opportunity to qualify for Europe’s 2010 Team.
With the agreement between the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles and EventScotland now in place, whoever lifts the Scottish Hydro Challenge on Sunday will get to sample that rarefied environment and have the opportunity to test themselves at the highest level.
Graeme Marchbank, Tournament Director of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles and Head of Corporate Sponsorship at Diageo, said: “We are very proud to support golf in Scotland and what better way to show that support than to have the winner of the Scottish Hydro Challenge appear in the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. As we all work towards The Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in 2014, opportunities such as this bring to life the shared journey Scotland is on.
“We believe that the winner of the Scottish Hydro Challenge will be taking his place amongst a truly world class field at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles as Colin finalises his Ryder Cup Team to face the USA in October.”
Robbie Clyde, Ryder Cup Project Director at EventScotland, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to support one of the Challenge Tour’s rising stars, so that they can really test themselves against the very best in Europe at such a high-profile European Tour event. We are grateful to the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles for helping to make this happen, it really demonstrates how closely together we are all working in Scotland, across all golf tournaments, to support the game in the run up to The 2014 Ryder Cup.”
