Luke Donald (136) leads by one at Wentworth

FROM THE CBS SPORTS WEBSITE
Luke Donald of England shot a second straight 3-under 68 on Friday to take a one-shot lead after the second round of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Donald took advantage of an early start time to make four birdies and a lone bogey while playing in perfect conditions for a 6-under total of 136.
Leaderboard
English duo Ross Fisher and first-round leader Danny Willett were a shot back in second, along with with James Kingston of South Africa.
Willett was among the late starters and birdied three of his first four holes before the wind started picking up at Wentworth's West Course, leaving the leaders struggling to make par. Willett had five bogeys and just one more birdie the rest of the way, for a 1-over 72.
"With that wind swirling in the tree you've got to stand up and trust that you and your caddy have got the wind right when you hit the shot," the 22-year-old Willett said. "But when it swirls like that it messes with you, and I started to hit long into some of the greens and then could not get up and down from the positions I found myself in."
Fisher birdied two of his last three holes for a 70, while Kingston shot a 69.
Padraig Harrington of Ireland was among a quartet of players a further shot back after carding a 67 in a bogey-free round.
Harrington is chasing his first title since 2008, and said he liked the redesigned West Course, which has been heavily criticised by some of his colleagues.
"There is plenty of intimidation out there," Harrington said. "But I like that. I play better when I am worried about missing a shot. When I get over the ball I tighten up my focus. It's so much better for me when I am on edge."
Defending champion Paul Casey was tied with Harrington at 4 under as he tries to become only the third player after Colin Montgomerie and Nick Faldo to retain his title since the tournament was launched in 1955.
Luke Donald and Paul Casey - close friends, but very different golfers - are both battling for the biggest prize at The European Tour's flagship event.

Leading the Scottish challenge, both on 140, were two Aberdonians, Paul Lawrie and Richie Ramsay.

ROOKIE RICKIE FOWLER IN SEARCH OF OPEN DEBUT

AS VETERANS COUPLES AND

LOVE III BID FOR ST ANDREWS RETURN

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE R&A
On Monday, Rickie Fowler, the former World Amateur Golf Ranking number one who has had four top-ten finishes on the PGA Tour in 2010, will attempt to earn his Open debut at International Final Qualifying – America.
Also bidding to secure their places in the 150th Anniversary Open Championship will be Fred Couples, the 50-year-old who finished sixth at this year’s Masters Tournament and Davis Love III, a veteran of 23 consecutive Open Championships, who successfully qualified at IFQ last year.
“This is my first attempt to qualify for The Open,” said 21-year-old PGA Tour rookie Fowler, the current world number 54, who concluded his amateur career last September by earning four points out of four for the USA in the 2009 Walker Cup Match.
“I have done well in qualifiers in the past, having qualified for the US Open twice. I am looking forward to the chance to play in my first Open. Links golf is one of my favourites if not my favourite, so I look forward to this opportunity.”
A field of 78, which currently includes 21 of the world’s top 100 players, will play 36 holes of the 6856-yard, par-70 Queens Course at Gleneagles Country Club in Plano, Texas, to determine which of them will earn one of the eight places available at golf’s oldest Major Championship.
Current world number 68 Rory Sabbatini of South Africa has played in the last seven Open Championships, with his best result, tied-26th, coming at Royal Liverpool in 2006.
“I love playing The Open,” said the 2009 Byron Nelson Champion. “It is a true test of golf. Playing it is definitely a challenge and I look forward to it every year.
“I have actually never played at Gleneagles Country Club. I drove around it last week to get a look at it,” added Sabbatini.
Gleneagles Country Club, a venue which is conveniently located to tie into the Tour’s Texas swing, lies only 20 miles from the TPC Four Seasons Resort, where the Byron Nelson Championship is currently being played. Following IFQ, players will travel the 50 miles to Fort Worth for the Crown Plaza Invitational at the Colonial.
Charley Hoffman, who has made two previous Open appearances, in 2007 at Carnoustie and in 2009 at Turnberry, said: “I have never played Gleneagles Country Club, but I have walked around and looked at it. The Open is a tournament you always want to play every year and being back at St Andrews is something you want to be part of. Getting into The Open is a high priority for me.”
Other notable names due to contest eight Open Championship berths on Monday include 2008 US Ryder Cup player JB Holmes, India’s Jeev Milkha Singh and Martin Laird, Scotland’s highest-ranked golfer.
Play will get underway at 7.00am local time from two tees. Live scores and stories will be published on www.opengolf.com throughout the day.

Sir Nick Faldo confirms Carnoustie appearance

NEWS RELEASE
Sir Nick Faldo, the six-time Major Champion, has confirmed he will be part of the world class line-up for this year’s Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard from July 22-25.
Europe’s last Ryder Cup Captain follows the current United States Captain Corey Pavin in entering the field for the 24th edition of the Championship, which will be played over the famous Championship Course at Carnoustie.
Faldo won The Open Championship three times in Scotland – at Muirfield in 1987 and 1992, and St Andrews in 1990 – and he will be hoping to add his maiden Senior Major championship to his hat-trick of Claret Jugs.
It will be the 52 year old’s third Senior Open Championship, after finishing tied 14th on his debut at Muirfield in 2007 and tied 38th last year at Sunningdale having missed the 2008 Championship due to his Ryder Cup Captaincy commitments.
Faldo, who also won three Masters Tournaments, is the all-time leading points scorer in The Ryder Cup, having appeared in the biennial contest 11 times.
He was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2009 in recognition of his services to golf over a career now spanning five decades in which he has become Britain’s most successful player.
Tickets are now on sale at a discounted rate to see Faldo play in The Senior Open Championship, which will also see the legendary pair of Gary Player and Tom Watson return to the course where they won The Open Championship in 1968 and 1975 respectively.
Spectators can buy tickets by visiting www.senioropengolf.com or by calling +44 (0) 800 023 2557, or on the gate. One day tickets are £25 and season tickets are £70.
Substantial savings can now be made both on day passes and season tickets for The 2010 Senior Open Championship, which are priced respectively at £16.50 and £60, with a further 10% discount available to MasterCard holders.

LAIRD ATTEMPTING TO EARN TICKET HOME

AT INTERNATIONAL FINAL QUALIFYING

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE R&A
On Monday, Scotland’s Martin Laird will compete for one of eight places available in the 150th Anniversary Open Championship, when he takes his place in the field at International Final Qualifying – America.
The current world number 105 will play 36 holes of the Queens Course at Gleneagles Country Club in Plano, Texas, to determine whether he will make only his second Open Championship appearance at St Andrews in 2010, having made his debut last year.
The Glaswegian, who missed the cut by two strokes at Turnberry, won the 2009 Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open, securing his PGA Tour card for 2010 and 2011. It was the first victory by a Scot on the PGA Tour since Sandy Lyle won the Masters Tournament in 1988.
Laird is joined in the field by two-time European Tour winner Brian Davis of England. Davis has made five Open Championship appearances, with his best result, tied-sixth, coming at Royal St George’s in the 2003 Open Championship. Now a regular on the PGA Tour, Davis finished in second place at the Verizon Heritage in April.
Notable names due to contest eight Open Championship berths at IFQ on Monday include Rickie Fowler, the PGA Tour rookie who has registered four top-ten finishes already this year and who took four points out of four for the USA during last year’s Walker Cup Match.
Others due to stake their claim for a 150th Anniversary Open Championship berth are 2008 US Ryder Cup player JB Holmes; India’s Jeev Milkha Singh; 1992 Masters Champion Fred Couples, who finished in third place when The Open was last held at St Andrews in 2005; and Davis Love III, the 1997 PGA Champion who successfully qualified for The Open last year at IFQ – America.
Play will get underway at 7.00am local time from two tees. Live scores and stories will be published on www.opengolf.com throughout the day.
