Tiger Woods files entry for The Open at St Andrews

FROM THE SCOTSMAN WEBSITE
By DAVID GUNN
TIGER Woods today filed his entry for The Open in July and so – injured neck permitting – will try to win at St Andrews for the third time in a row.
The world number one won by a massive eight shots in 2000, just a month after a major record 15-stroke victory in the US Open at Pebble Beach, and then returned to the Home of Golf in 2005 and won by five.
Woods has still to announce when he will next appear after withdrawing from The Players Championship in Florida seven holes into his final round nine days ago.A scan revealed that he was suffering from an inflamed facet joint and he said: "I now need to take care of this condition and will return to playing golf when I'm physically able."
He is expected to be fit enough to defend his Memorial title in Ohio on June 3-6 and two weeks later comes the US Open back at Pebble Beach.

DUNFERMLINE BUILDING SOCIETY TO SUPPORT

SCOTTISH BOYS'AREA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
The Scottish Golf Union has announced today that Dunfermline Building Society will become the Official Partner of the Scottish Boys Area Team Championship being hosted on Sunday 6 May at Peebles in the Borders.
Dunfermline Building Society has been in partnership with the Scottish Golf Union since 2007 and previously sponsored the Junior Masters and Scottish Junior Club of the Year Awards. Dunfermline Building Society has continued to promote their Fairway Savers affinity account for golfers, a savings product which rewards golf customers and provides investment for junior golf in Scotland.
David Gibb, Affinity Accounts Manager for Dunfermline Building Society, welcomed the move to give their full support to the Scottish Boys Area Team Championship:
“We have enjoyed a very productive relationship with the Scottish Golf Union over the last three years and we continue to support grass roots golf in Scotland through the Fairway Savers account. Many of the players who will feature in the Championship will have played in the Junior Masters event previously, so it’s encouraging to see that our investment has helped their development.”
Ross Duncan, Marketing & Sponsorship Manager for the SGU, added:
“We are delighted to continue our partnership with Dunfermline Building Society, who have been very supportive of junior golf in Scotland in recent years. The Fairway Savers account has been a very popular product among members of our affiliated clubs and we hope that Dunfermline Building Society’s support of the Boys Area Team Championship will encourage even more golfers to open an account.”
The Championship, which features teams made up of the four best young players from each of the SGU’s sixteen Area Associations, was first staged in 1977 and was won by the North of Scotland for the first time last year. Peebles stages the event for the third time having been hosts in 1988 and 1993, when it was won by Fife and Dumbartonshire respectively.
Host club Peebles, which has a Dunfermline Building Society branch in the town, currently boasts two Scotland Boys U16s internationalists in Daniel Flannery and Craig Howie and the duo will be hoping that they can use their local knowledge to help the Borders team to victory on home soil.

FALTERING START FOR RENFREWSHIRE BOYS

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION
In the first of the inter area matches, Renfrewshire Golf Union had a home match at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club with Glasgow Golf Union as their opponents.
In the first game, Paul Reilly (Lochwinnoch) got the season off to a solid start with a 2 and 1 victory over Craig Anderson. Tom Binning then used home course knowledge to raise hopes of an easy victory. Elderslie’s Alasdair McDougall, fresh from his solid run in the Scottish Boys’, found himself 3 down with four to play and clawed his way back to all square going down the last. A hook and a lost ball saw off his challenge.
Jamie Savage from Cawder Golf Club, a rising star was just to good for Fraser Lauder (Paisley) who lost by one hole and, having started so well, Renfrewshire went behind when the usually reliable Stewart Watt (Old Ranfurly) had a serious off day against Pollock’s Patrick O’Neill shaking hands at the 14th hole – it’s a long way to the clubhouse from there! Again, local boy, Josh Bogle showed that knowing the course can be a key element when he recorded a 3 and 2 victory over Scott Wearing (Bishopriggs) and Scottish Internationalist, Andrew McLachlan (Bonnyton) then strode into a three hole lead after six holes and eventually won 2 and 1 despite a strong challenge from David Gallagher (Glasgow).
Leading by one game, convenors Graham McGee and Gary Havlin then bit finger nails as they watched last minute substitute, Andrew Cunningham, Boys’ Champion at Ranfurly Castle, fight it out with Calum McLean (Cowglen) – a seasoned campaigner. In a game where there was never more than one hole in it, it was all square coming down the last. Both boys found the green and it was McLean who sank his putt for a birdie. A draw and only one point for Renfrewshire.
