Spanish Federation submit bid to host 2018 Ryder Cup

The Spanish Golf Federation has now formally submitted its bid to host the 2018 Ryder Cup.
Federation president Gonzaga Escauriaza led the presentation before a delegation from Ryder Cup Europe.
Seve Ballesteros and Iker Casillas lent their support to the bid by attending the event at a Madrid hotel today.
Escauriaza said hosting the competition would inspire a new generation of Spanish golfers through a $41.5 million development programme and lead the way in environmentally friendly courses.
The proposed course, yet to be built, will be located half an hour from Madrid at Tres Cantos.
France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden are also bidding to hold the three-day competition.
Spain has already hosted a Ryder Cup - at Valderrama, Sotogrande in 1997 when Europe beat the United States by 14 1/2-13 1/2. Seve was Europe's inspirational captain.
The country chosen to host the 2018 Ryder Cup match will be announced next year.

European Senior Tour report and scores

Longmuir leads by four with a round to go

By STEVE TODD
European Senior Tour Press Officer
Anglo-Scot Bill Longmuir will take a four-stroke lead into the final round of the Handa Senior Masters presented by The Stapleford Forum as he tries to deny John Harrison and Boonchu Ruangkit a place in the record books.
Longmuir started the day with a four stroke advantage over the field following a stunning opening round nine under par 64 – his lowest to par on the European Senior Tour – and maintained that advantage with a 69 to move to 13 under par for the tournament at Stapleford Park Golf Club, Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire.
Harrison and Ruangkit each carded rounds of 67 to share second place on nine under par and both will have their sights on re-writing the record books in the final round, with Harrison bidding to become the youngest Senior Tour winner and Ruangkit targeting his fourth straight Senior Tour victory.
However, it is Longmuir who is firmly in pole position to capture his eighth Senior Tour title and first victory since the DGM Barbados Open in 2008, despite having started the week with no semblance of form, with his best finish in four appearances in 2010 so far tied 17th in Brunei. The Scot posted four birdies in the opening five holes of his second round at Stapleford Park and picked up further shots on the eighth and tenth holes before blotting his scorecard with a double bogey 7 on the long 11th – a hole he eagled in his first round.
He regained one of those shots with a birdie on the 15th and although he then surrendered it again with a bogey on the 17th, Longmuir insisted he was delighted with his day’s work.
“I’m pleased with my performance even though I had a bit of trouble with my swing,” he said. “My son Callum, who’s caddying for me, said I was swinging a bit fast, so I tried to change that but ended up changing the wrong bit before I corrected it. I did hit out of bounds on the 11th so I didn’t do as well as I could but I also still hit a few birdies today. I am feeling confident, largely due to the work of my good friend Michael Wolseley (the ex-European Tour professional) in the United States, who has done a lot for my game.
“I’m confident in my own game for tomorrow but you can never tell what someone else will shoot.”
Runaway Order of Merit leader Ruangkit, of Thailand, posted an eagle and five birdies in his round as he continued the remarkable form he has shown in 2010 in winning the past three events in Brunei, Thailand and South Africa.
“I came to Europe not expecting to get my fourth win in a row - I came here to get more experience of the weather and the greens,” he said. “I’m still a way behind the leader so I’m not sure how tomorrow will go but I’m getting more used to the greens, even though they are not as fast as the Far East.
“I’m the only senior from Thailand here, but next year I hope there will be more. I want to show players at home that they can come to Europe and do well.”
Debutant Harrison, who came of Senior Tour age on May 6, could become the youngest winner on the Senior Tour at 50 years and eight days tomorrow – eclipsing by one day the record set by John Bland when the South African won the London Masters in 1995.
The Matfen Hall professional, winner of the Senior Tour Qualifying School last November, posted an eagle on the 11th hole in addition to six birdies and two bogeys to sign for a six under par round.
“I was only looking for a steady tournament this week but I’m really happy to be up there and I got more confident as the round went on,” he said.“Yesterday I didn’t play fantastically but I was pleased with three under. I played better today and I am in some sort of contention which is great.
“I’m confident of holding a good position tomorrow. If you make a few birdies early on and get off to a quick start on this course you will be in a good position. Personally if I’m up there in that top six I would be really pleased for my first event.”
Leading Senior Tour money winner Carl Mason, who could also make history by matching Tommy Horton’s record of 23 Senior Tour titles, and Ireland’s Des Smyth are a further shot back on eight under par.
Another debutant, former PGA Championship winner Andrew Oldcorn from Edinburgh, signed for a four under par 69 to move to three under par.
After starting with a bogey on the first hole, Sam Torrance posted three birdies for a 71 to finish level par for the tournament, while fellow former Ryder Cup Captain Ian Woosnam recovered from dropping four shots in three holes to shoot a level par 73 and lies one shot further back on one over par.

MALLORCA OPEN REPORT, SCORES

Kingston leads with a 65 before the wind got up

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
South African James Kingston capitalised on the best of the conditions to take the first round lead in Mallorca today..
Out on the Pula course early, before the wind really picked up, the 44-year-old returned a five- under-par 65 at the Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca, which proved too strong for the later starters.
Kingston ended the day a couple of strokes in front of Spaniard Alvaro Velasco, with Ireland's Gary Murphy, Frenchman Raphaël Jacquelin, Spain's Alejandro Cañizares and Dane Thorbjorn Olesen one further back.
"I didn't have a nice day out there yesterday and it's not one of my favourites," said two-time European Tour winner Kingston. "But I was hitting it so well that it was actually an easy round of 65.
"It's tricky even without a wind, but when you play nicely you can see the scores."
Kingston, who birdied three of his last six holes as things became more blustery, is only recently back from a seven-week break during which he visited Zambia and Mozambique with friends and family.
Velasco lost his European Tour card last season and did not make the 72-hole cut at The European Tour Qualifying School in November.
His ranking on the Spanish Order of Merit earned him his place in the tournament and he came home in 32 with birdies at the first, fourth and sixth.
"It was a good round," said the Barcelona resident, who turns 29 on Saturday. "I played very well, particularly the back nine.
"I was playing really well two years ago, and then I spent a couple of years struggling with my game and my scores, trying to put things together.
"This year I started to play much better, more consistently - still with no results but the game is there and they will come. I've learned a lot from last year, and my game is back."
Murphy was another back at the Qualifying School last November and although the 37 year old from Kilkenny made it through he has since managed to survive only two cuts in ten starts.
"I've been struggling with the groove change," he said. "I'm on my fifth set of irons, but have finally got some I feel are doing what they should do."
He was four under after seven, gave all the shots back, but then birdied the seventh and eighth to climb back into a tie for third.

Tiger's neck injury is an inflamed joint

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
Tiger Woods has an inflamed joint in his neck and is still unable to say when he will be able to return to competitive golf.
Woods pulled out of the Players Championship on Sunday with a neck injury and underwent a scan to determine the cause of the problem.
An article on the world No 1's official website reported that Woods has "an inflamed facet joint in his neck".
The story continued: "When the facet joints are inflamed, it causes pain in the affected area as well as headaches and difficulty rotating the head.
"Physical therapy, including soft-tissue massage, rest and anti-inflammatory medicine will be used to treat the injury.
"The prognosis for Woods is a full recovery, although a return date to competitive golf is contingent on how quickly the condition heals. The lay-off is not expected to be extensive, but can vary."
Woods himself said: "I want to thank everyone for their caring and concern.
"I now need to take care of this condition and will return to playing golf when I'm physically able."
Woods has played in three events this season after five months out following the sex scandal which broke at the end of last year.
Speaking on Monday about his potential schedule, the American said: "I'll want to come back and obviously defend at Memorial and play the US Open (they are in the first and third weeks of next month), but I'll have a lot more answers after I get the picture."

Corey Pavin to make Senior Open debut at Carnoustie

NEWS RELEASE
Corey Pavin will become the first presiding Ryder Cup captain to play in The Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard when he takes his place in the world class field at Carnoustie from July 22-25.
The 50 year old will makes his debut in the championship just 11 weeks before he captains the United States against Colin Montgomerie’s European team at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, Wales from October 1 to 3.
Pavin has made a solid start to life as a senior golfer – finishing runner up in The Cap Cana Championship on the US Champions Tour in March – and despite his Ryder Cup commitments he is targeting a maiden Senior Major Championship to add to his memorable US Open Championship victory in 1995.
“Winning The Senior Open Championship would mean a lot to me,” said Pavin. “Fourth was the best finish I ever had in The Open Championship in 1993 and so any time I can win a Major is great.
“For me, winning a Senior Open would be very special because it is probably my favourite type of golf to play and I don’t get to play it very often.
“I love playing links golf - it is true golf in my opinion as it requires a lot of imagination and thinking. I like to play golf on the ground, not in the air. I like to run the ball up on the greens - even with my driver I like to hit it low and let it run and take the contour of the fairways if that helps me.
“Links golf suits my game more than any type of golf course but it’s been a while since I’ve played it so I’m going to enjoy it.”
Pavin joins an impressive roll call of Ryder Cup captains who have played in the Senior Open Championship, including nine last year at Sunningdale: Europeans Sir Nick Faldo, Mark James, Bernhard Langer, Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam and fellow Americans Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Tom Lehman and Tom Watson.
However he will become the first serving captain to take part in the prestigious Championship, which celebrates its 24th anniversary this year by returning to Scotland.
“I don’t feel distracted being the Ryder Cup Captain,” he said. “Lisa (his wife) is helping me a lot and that helps me not have to worry about the Ryder Cup but I’m not one to stress about stuff like that anyway – I’m pretty mellow. Maybe not so much on the course – I’m pretty competitive there – but off it I’m as laid back as anyone in the world.
“It seems anywhere I go in the world these days The Ryder Cup comes up, which is great, but going back to Scotland for The Senior Open will be particularly special, especially with the next Ryder Cup in Europe being in Scotland at Gleneagles, not too far from Carnoustie. Anytime people want to talk about The Ryder Cup I love talking about it – I’m very passionate about it. It’s the greatest tournament there is.”
Pavin missed the cut the last time he visited Carnoustie for The Open Championship in 1999 and he is fully aware of the stern threat the notoriously difficult Championship Course can pose.
“‘Carnastie’ – that’s a great name for it,” he said. “The last time I played there was in 1999 and it was a beast that week. It could have been the hardest course I have ever played in my life. The wind was blowing – at least the first two days which were the only days I played it!
“It seemed like all the holes were cross wind and it was so hard to hit the fairway, which were narrow. I suspect for The Senior Open it won’t be set up that difficult. I remember the course being a very nice lay out but just hard. I’m just hoping it won’t be that hard!”
Spectators can buy tickets now for The Senior Open Championship by visiting www.senioropengolf.com or by calling +44 (0) 800 023 2557 or on the gate. One day tickets are £25 and season tickets are £70.
Substantial savings can now be made both on day passes and season tickets for The 2010 Senior Open Championship, which are priced respectively at £16.50 and £60, with a further 10% discount available to MasterCard holders.

Handa Senior Masters

Longmuir leads by four after
-
nine-under-par 64

FROM THE EUROPEAN SENIORS TOUR WEBSITE
Bill Longmuir posted a stunning nine under par 64, his lowest round to par in eight years on the European Senior Tour, to take a four shot lead in the opening round of the Handa Senior Masters presented by The Stapleford Forum.
The Anglo-Scot, pictured by Andy Forman, carded seven birdies and an eagle in a flawless display at Stapleford Park, in Leicestershire, England, to open up a commanding lead over compatriot Ross Drummond, English pair Roger Chapman and Carl Mason and Australian David Merriman, who all signed for rounds of 68.
After opening with a birdie on the first hole, Longmuir picked up two more shots before the turn and then turned on the style on the way in, with an eagle three on the 509 yard par five 11th hole followed by a further four birdies in a six under par back nine of 30. His 64 was the joint lowest 18 hole total on the Senior Tour this season and the lowest round to par, one shot lower than Boonchu Ruangkit’s opening round in the Chang Thailand Senior Masters presented by ISPS.
It represents a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the 56 year old, who could only finish 61st in his the previous Senior Tour event, the Berenberg Bank Masters in South Africa. He said: “I’ve had a really bad run over the last 18 months where nothing really has happened for me. I had a little spark in the middle of last season but it’s been horrible. “My last two tournament scores were 87 and 84 in South Africa which gives you some idea of what I’ve been going through.
“I went to the United States last week to stay with a pal of mine, who used to play on Tour. He got some form out of me last year when I had a few top ten finishes. He has helped me considerably and has restored my faith in my swing and my short game.
“I was always looking for the perfect strike all the time but today it just happened and felt easy. I started making putts which is always the key. It’s my first time at Stapleford Park but obviously I like it. It seems to suit me. My course management was good today. I played steady and I got the rewards. I’ll take the next two days as they come and I’ll just keep playing the same way.”
Mason’s season had also been yet to get into full swing after he retired with shin splints in his only appearance so far in 2010 in South Africa. However, after also spending the past month America, the Senior Tour’s all time leading money winner appears to be back on track, carding six birdies and just the single bogey.
“I was pleasantly surprised today,” said the Englishman. “I’m lacking in tournament play but I played a lot out golf out in Florida. It’s different when you get that pencil in your hand though. “At nearly 7,000 yards this is a long course and it has a couple of fiddly holes but I didn’t make any mistakes and I putted well. I had a couple of twos on the card on the back nine, which always helps.”
Conversely his compatriot Chapman has been in fine form so far in 2010, with three top ten finishes to date, and marked the Senior Tour’s first visit to his homeland this season with another superb round.
“I started off with a good front nine, with birdies on the second, fourth, sixth and seventh holes but I did miss two birdie opportunities on the two par threes, so I could have been out in under 30,” he said.
“I hit out it of bounds on the 11th which gave me a six but overall I played nicely. I’ll take two more rounds like that and I’d be very happy.”
Thailand’s Runagkit made a solid start in his attempt at capturing a record-equalling fourth consecutive Senior Tour victory, signing for a three under par 70. Order of Merit leader Ruangkit, who celebrates his 54th birthday today, began his round with three birdies in four holes but dropped shots on the sixth and eighth holes before two further birdies on the back nine.
His score was matched by Englishman John Harrison, winner of the Senior Tour Qualifying School in Portugal last November, who enjoyed a fine debut just six days after turning 50.
Former PGA Championship winner Andrew Oldcorn, another Senior Tour debutant, posted a one over par 74, while Ryder Cup Captains Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam carded rounds of 75 and 74 respectively.

Bemused’ MacDougall hits back at Coltart criticism

FROM THE HERALDSCOTLAND.COM WEBSITE
By NICK RODGER
Michael MacDougall, the secretary of the Scottish PGA, last night admitted to being “bemused” at some of the claims concerning the PGA made in yesterday’s Herald by the former Ryder Cup player Andrew Coltart.
Coltart, a two-time winner on the European Tour, has added his voice to the ongoing debate on the future of Scottish golf and has criticised the Professional Golfers’ Association for what he sees as outdated, restrictive practices which are stifling emerging talent.
The 40-year-old claimed, as an example, that Callum Macaulay, the Eisenhower Trophy winner who lost his European Tour card at the end of 2009, is in danger of being cast adrift and has nowhere to play, while he expressed cynicism over the Tartan Tour’s new Sprint to St Andrews, a series launched hard on the heels of the independent Xltec Pro Golf Tour’s Race to Spain, a pay-and-play circuit devised by former SPGA No.1, Alan Tait.
MacDougall, the amiable Glaswegian who has endured an eventful introduction to the secretary’s post at the SPGA since taking over at the turn of the year, has acted swiftly to set some records straight.
“I was left slighty bemused as some of the things said were factually incorrect,” said MacDougall. “Funnily enough before I read the article, Callum Macaulay had just been speaking to me on the phone as he is playing in our Teddy Bear Invitational Pro-Am at Gleneagles this month.
“I put it to him that if he wanted to join the Tartan Tour then he could. He has what we call a ‘tour player 1 category’ and if he wanted to compete here then he could fill in a form and take out membership. Callum said ‘thanks but no thanks’ as there is simply no place in his schedule as he has a full Challenge Tour card.
“The reality for someone like Callum, who has tasted the main tour and wants to get back there, is that the Tartan Tour doesn’t have the same lure, but to say there is not the opportunity for him, or others like him, to play here is wrong.”
On the suggested conflict between the Tartan Tour’s Sprint to St Andrews and the Xltec Tour, MacDougall added: “The Sprint Series is something that was trialed in other PGA regions last year. The Irish and South regions had it and they have it again this year. It is an idea that is being rolled out across the PGA and it was only a matter of time before we took it on board. To suggest that it was done to scupper Alan’s tour is disappointing. We have a very cordial relationship with Alan and there is no problem between us.”
