By BOB THOMPSON
Overnight pacemaker Rhys Pugh’s lead has been cut to one following a round of 75 played in a cold north east wind, which changed how the course had been playing the previous two days.
Jack McDonald closed to within one shot of Rhys following a very impressive round of 71. A further shot back is Craig Young with an equally impressive round of level par 72.
Bronte Lad is the leading girl, but only a shot ahead of Brogan Townend.
The fourth and final round promises to be very exciting with a number of top class players a few shots behind the leaders.

Paul Lawrie's last-day 67 makes him top Scot in jt sixth

Quiros is local hero in play-off for Spanish Open

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Spanish big-hitter Alvaro Quiros received the cheers of his home fans in Seville after beating English rookie James Morrison to become Spanish Open champion.
The 27-year-old from Malaga, who at 35th in the world was the highest-ranked player in the field, won his fourth European Tour title with a par on the first play-off hole.
Morrison, winner in Madeira on his last start three weeks ago, fired a 67 to force sudden death, but then pulled his second shot into the water and double-bogeyed.
He still had plenty to smile about - over £191,000 for a start - but for compatriot Mark Foster disappointment was written all over his face after he missed three-foot putts on the 16th and 18th to lose by one.

==================================
"I think it's one of the most important things in my life for sure," said Quiros. "To be the winner of your Open is something really, really great - with the Ryder Cup and the World Cup it's the best three things in golf for me."
After going in the water on the long ninth and turning two behind, Quiros told television commentator Howard Clark that he was trying his best to throw the tournament away.
"Mark Foster was playing really well and I knew I had to make birdies," he added.
But Foster bogeyed the short 11th and his birdie on the fourth was the only one he managed all day.
Morrison earned a place on the circuit with only £5,000 to spare by finishing 18th on last season's Challenge Tour, but already in 2010 he has come first, second, fourth and sixth. With his £191,239 runners-up prize he has already earned almost £350,000 and has no reason to regret choosing golf over cricket.
"I'm loving every minute of it," he said. "This start is past my expectations, but you have to believe in yourself. This is the biggest prize I've ever played for. I've been good at not looking at that, but I did have a quick look in the morning."
Paul Lawrie, the 1999 Open champion from Aberdeen, had one of the best final rounds - a 67 - to finish joint sixth on 279. Give him a par 72 instead of a 74 in the opening round and Paul would have been involved in the play-off. That's how close he was to centre stage.
Paul earned 56,200 Euros for his weekend work. Stephen Gallacher was the next best Scot with a payday of 15,000 Euros.

Holed bunker shot at 17th put Paul only a shot off the lead ...

JOCK MacVICAR writes in today's Scottish Daily Express:
For Lawrie this was an enormous boost going into this week's Italian Open after many frustrating weeks, caused by poor putting.
By shooting a closing 67, he equalled his lowest last round on tour since he shot 65 in Abu Dhabi 16 months ago.
Having goine into the £2mllion tournament 163rd in the Race to Dubai and 248th in the world, the former Open champion picked up seven birdies in a 67 to share sixth place, only two behind winner Quiros.
It was Lawrie's highest finish since he was third in the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles last August and he attributed his improved performance in the bistering Seville sunshine to a putting tip from his coach, Adam Hunter, a week ago.
For a moment, a first victory on Tour since the Wales Open eight years ago looked possible. A holed bunker shot at the 17th for a 2 suddenly elevated the Aberdonian to withinn a shot of the lead.
"Even though you haven't been in contention up to then, you go into winning mode and I know who to do," Paul told me later.
"Standing on the 18th tee, I knew I needed a birdie to get to 11 under par and to be in with a chance. But the 18th is a really tight drive and I blew it out right into the rough. It was just a poor swing.
"I wedged from 88 yards to three or feet and I hit the putt right side, exactly the way I wanted to, but it didn't move. It's disappointng to finish with a bogey but it's been a good week."
In strictly financial terms, missing that three-footer on the 18th green cost Lawrie some £40,365 but a cheque for £48,364 and more confidence on the greens was fair consolation.
A lesson from Hunter a few days earlier was the key to his best showing on tour this year.
"Adam noticed that I had been aiming left, so I have been working on my alignment and the (putting) stroke feels better," Paul expalined.
"Apart from the last hole, I holed some important putts.
"I've struggled a bit with my long game this week but I've putted well and I always say it's no good being a fantastic striker of the ball and a poor putter. That leads to missing cuts."

Kris Nicol runner-up

in Lytham Trophy

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Fraserburgh Golf Club greenkeeper Kris Nicol confirmed his emergence as one of the country's front-line amateur golfers by finishing a clear-runner-up to Irishman Paul Cutler in the prestigious Lytham Trophy over 72 holes at Royal Lytham & St Annes, Lancashire today.
Nicol, pictured right, had rounds of 72, 68, 73 and 74 for a total of seven-over-par 287 over the Open championship links which were made even tougher by a blustery wind for the last two rounds today.
Culter had scores of 74, 66, 73 and 71 for 284, his Sunday tally of 144 compared to the Buchan man's 147 being the difference between the two in the final analysis.
Nicol finished three shots clear of the pair who shared third place.
The next best Scot was Ross Kellett (Colville Park), the leading home-based Scottish player in the R&A WAGR. Ross finished joint 16th on 296, nine shots adrift of Nicol.
Peterhead's Philip McLean, winner of the Edward Trophy seven days earlier, was bang in contention after rounds of 73 and 70 but he slumped down to 25th place in the final standings with Sunday rounds of 79 and 77, although in fairness to Philip, it should be pointed out that he was only one of many who struggled in Sunday's conditions.
Same applies to Royal Aberdeen's Scott Larkin, who scored 146 for the first two rounds (73-73) and 159 for the last two rounds (79-80). The Banchory man, who has come home a much better golfer than he was before he went to the States to spend four years on the college golf circuit, finished joint 40th on 305.
North-east District officials have high hopes that with Nicol, McLean and Larkin in their line-up, the district will be contenders for the revamped Scottish men's area team championship at Kinross later this month.
Paul Cutler first Irish winner of Lytham Trophy since 1982
FROM THE IRISHTIMES WEBSITE
Irish international, Paul Cutler, from Portstewart, battled through the pain barrier to win the Lytham Trophy at Royal Lytham and St Annes over the weekend.
The East of Ireland champion was suffering from tendinitis in his left elbow but dug deep to close with a one-over-par 71 for a four-over-par total of 284 and a three-shot winning margin over Scotland’s Kris Nicol.
Cutler became the first Irish winner of the event since Martin Sludds from The Island won in 1982.
After opening rounds of 74 and an excellent four-under-par 66, Cutler carded a third round 73 to go into the final round tied for the lead on 213 with Germany’s Alexis Szappanos. Cutler played the front nine in one over par but birdies at the 10th, 11th and 14th saw him beat the conditions made even tougher by a blustery wind for the last two rounds.

Summerhays breaks up the Nationwide Tour logjam

FROM THE PGA.COM WEBSITE
The third round of the Nationwide Tour's Stadion Athens Classic at the University of Georgia course at Athens began with a jumbled leaderboard that had 37 players within six strokes of the lead. By the time it ended, there were only four players within a half-dozen strokes.
Daniel Summerhays of Utah fired a 6-under 65 to reach 13-under 200 and take the 54-hole lead at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Texan Martin Piller put together a bogey-free 64 and is one stroke back heading into Sunday's closer. Bradley Iles of New Zealand also put a 65 on the board and is at 11 under, two back.
Leading money-winner Bobby Gates, one of three co-leaders after each of the first two days, shot an even-par 71 and is alone in fourth place, six back of Summerhays.
Birdies were more plentiful during the third round, but most of the forward movement in the field came from the back and the middle of the pack, save for the top three.
"Today was fantastic," said the 26-year-old Summerhays. "It was probably one of my best rounds. I hit it pretty well and was rolling my putts perfectly. I had a lot of fun seeing my shots and being able to execute it, and that's why we play -- for days like that."
Summerhays, who began the misty morning as a co-leader with Gates and South Carolina rookie Mark Anderson (74-209), put together four consecutive birdies starting at No. 5 to move into the lead. In the stretch, he rolled in one from 15 feet, another from 12 feet and had a couple of short ones.
"It's nice to have a stretch like that and have a couple of tap-ins," he said.
The former BYU standout added three more birdies, including one at No. 17 and was at 14 under before falling victim to the difficult par-4 18th, which was the toughest of the day and played to 4.420.
"It's 490. Trees on both sides and a green that's really, really tough, that's what happened," mused the leader after suffering his only bogey of the day. "It's probably the toughest finishing hole we play."
Summerhays pulled his tee shot left and into some trees.
"I tried to hook a 7-iron up the hill and I got a little ahead of it," he said. "I worm-burned it up there."
He chipped to 15 feet but the missed his par putt, cutting his lead to one over Piller, whose 64 is the low round of the week.
"It was one of my best rounds that I've played as a pro," said the second-year man from Texas A&M. "It was probably one of my best rounds mentally. I never worried. I hit some really good shots and I hit some bad ones, but if I hit a bad one I didn't worry. I just thought about making the next one a good one."
They were all good for Piller, who canned five of his seven birdie putts from inside of 3 feet, including his final two holes.
Piller and Iles were in the same group and started canning birdies left and right beginning on No. 5.
"I'd make one, he'd make one and we just went back and forth," said Piller. "It's difficult to explain but one guy starts doing it and you just follow suit. It definitely helps. It's like NASCAR. It's drafting. There is a drafting element to it and it's nice when you have a guy right there with you and you go at it together."
Iles did his best to keep pace by hitting 15 greens, making five birdies and an eagle. He also enjoyed a big stretch starting at No. 5. The 27-year-old Kiwi canned birdie putts of 15 and 4 feet before tapping in a 4-footer for eagle at the par-5 7th to get to 9 under.
"It was good. We definitely fed off of each other," said Iles. "It keeps your intensity level up because you have to keep making birdies and keep charging. You can't be protecting anything because you know he's going to be making birdies and hitting it close."
Iles reached double digits with a monster birdie putt from about 50 feet on the ninth hole.
"I holed a bomb on nine. That was an illegal putt there," he said. "I wasn't supposed to make that. It was going. Seriously, it might have been down on the 18th green. It was easily going at least 12 feet past the hole."
Third-Round Notes: Fourth-round play will be in twosomes off the first tee beginning at 7:35 a.m. ... Skip Kendall had an ace on the par-3 third hole, which played to 192 yards. ... The trio of leaders were twice as good on the front nine as they were on the back. Summerhays, Piller and Iles were a combined 13 under on the front, compared to 6 under on the back. The three players accounted for 19 birdies, one eagle and only two bogeys on the afternoon.
Scott Gutschewski had an interesting stretch of three holes on the back nine today. The transplanted Texan's scorecard read 2-8-2 starting at No. 11, where he made an eagle-2 at the par 4. He then suffered a triple bogey at the par-5 12th hole and followed it up with a birdie-2 at the par-3 13th. He finished with a 3-over 74 and is tied for 46th. ... The scoring average for the round was 71.174.

A touch of Frost on US Champions Tour leaderboard

FROM THE PGA.COM WEBSITE
South African David Frost shot a 6-under 66 on Saturday to equal the course record and join Brad Bryant and David Eger atop the Champions Tour leaderboard for the inaugural Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic at Saucier.
Bryant, who had a one-shot lead heading to the final hole, bogeyed 18 for his second consecutive 68. Eger also shot a 68 in the second round at Fallen Oak Golf Club.
"In the wind like this, it's not so much about momentum as it is about patience and control," Bryant said.
Jay Haas (68) was in fourth, two shots off the pace, and Tom Kite, Joey Sindelar, Roid Spittle and Tommy Armour III were at 5 under.
"Anybody can win," Eger said. "Eight under, we just start off with the lead. By the time we tee off, we could be behind."
Gary Hallberg also shot a 6-under 66 and was tied for ninth with four others, including first-round co-leader Bob Tway, who shot 2-over 74. Robin Freeman had seven birdies but finished with a double-bogey and bogey to complete a 68. He had a share of the lead before the double-bogey on the par-3 17th.
Leonard Thompson, who shared the first-round lead with Tway, struggled most of the day, shooting a 5-over 77 that dropped him into a tie for 26th.
Because of the threat of inclement weather, tournament officials moved up the start of Sunday's final round and announced they will use split tees, beginning on No. 1 and No. 10.

Campbell's coming to Scotland after beating NZ pros

New Zealand amateur representative Ben Campbell held off the challenge from more experienced golf professionals to win the Tauranga Open today.
The Masterton 18-year-old fired a 66 to finish on 19-under-par to become the first amateur in more than two years to win a Charles Tour event in New Zealand.
Campbell is only the second amateur to win the Tauranga Open, following on from local star Josh Geary who won five years ago.
He finished five shots ahead of North Harbour professional Michael Hendry, last year's winner who had the compensation of claiming the top prizemoney cheque.
It was an excellent week for the amateurs with fellow-international Ryan Fox finishing third on 13-under par after firing a four-under 66 today.
The big mover on the final day was local professional Jared Pender, who fired a seven under 63 on Saturday and 64 today to finish fourth on 12-under after just making the 36-hole cut.
There was a strong effort from local golfers with Pender in fourth ahead of amateurs James Hamilton of Omanu who was seventh, Kieran Muir of Omokoroa and Nick Meyer of Mt Maunganui sharing ninth.
Campbell, who beat Danny Lee to win the national under-23 title two years ago, said this victory was just as sweet.
"It means a lot to win this. I came in feeling that my game was not quite there but my short game was great all week," said Campbell, who finished runner-up in the Australian Amateur earlier in the month.
"I learned in that final that the winner Matt Jager had a short game that was much better than mine. So that is pretty much what I have concentrated on since and it paid dividends this week. The chipping and putting was really good.
"If I missed a green I felt quite confident with my ability to get it up and down and really attack the flag with my chipping.
"There were some excellent professionals here this week with tour cards and playing with the likes of Mattie Holten and Michael Hendry was great and I learned a lot from them. It's always good to get a win under your belt and to do it against the pros is even better."
Campbell will head to Europe in a month where he will compete in a number of high profile events including the British Amateur and the Scottish Amateur stroke-play .
He started the day with a three-shot advantage from Wellington professional Andrew Green who faded out of contention today.
The charge early came from defending champion Hendry who got within three shots after six holes but was unable to kick on as Campbell weathered the storm.
The amateur produced his fourth straight round in red numbers and was able to keep his poise while his challengers were unable to mount a serious threat.
