Ian Hamilton launches new service of crisis management

Golf clubs must make their product attractive

NEWS RELEASE
A new golf service in being launched, aimed primarily at helping golf clubs through the current economic difficulties.
The creator of this is Ian Hamilton who has slowly and deliberately risen to high accreditation within the golf management circuit.
Hamilton studied golf management at Dornoch College and was a management trainee with St Andrews Links Trust. Keen to exploit his skills, he took on the management of Aberdovey Golf Club in Wales and revolutionised the fundamentals of contemporary golf management. In only sixteen months, Aberdovey won three national awards and increased their green fee revenue by £51,000 (25%) – a global record last year.
In a negative and compressed market, this stands out a phenomenal achievement and demonstrates what can be achieved given the opportunity.
“The management model that I exploited at Aberdovey can be executed at every mainstream golf facility within the UK. Golf has a tendency to focus on its past rather than its future and a lot of clubs are now significantly unprepared for the new era," says Ian Hamilton.
"Golf operates as a business and the product must be attractive for customers to buy into. We are in a position where custom is thin and competition is high. Golf clubs don’t need to reduce their cash flows by insane price and promotion offers. They can, however, increase their market share by making the product attractive.”
Hamilton admits that getting the message through to the traditional golf committee structures has been onerous.
“There is, without doubt, a fear of change within golf clubs. I get round this by explaining that they don’t build golf courses in concrete and all the big courses constantly refresh and update their product to remain market attractive. Without change; nothing happens and it’s quite clear that golf clubs need to do move forward to attract new and sustainable business”.
Cost is obviously a four-letter word right now but Hamilton has discovered a gap in the market which is easily affordable.
“I am not interested in the ‘shiny’ side of golf. Golf clubs seem to be participating in some form of glossy media and web site competition right now. I am totally focussed on working with clubs at the sharp end – on the course and in the clubhouse; the nuts and bolts of the operation. Let’s get the product right first and then we can do marketing”.
Aided by some exceptional talent, Hamilton is keen to emphasise the potential of this venture.
“It has taken a wee bit longer for all the building blocks to be assembled but this is the first occasion that this level of service has been successfully brought together. Normally, all the channels work independently of each other which is slow and very expensive.
"What I am offering is very fast and affordable solutions to help golf clubs maximise their business potential – essential in today’s economic climate.
You can email Ian Hamilton at ian@ianhamiltongolfconsultancy.co.uk and the full range of golf services that Ian Hamilton can offer is available to view at www.ianhamiltongolfconsultancy.co.uk.

Star-studded field at Wentworth for European Tour flagship event

Westwood, Poulter and Casey to play in BMW Championship

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE EUROPEAN TOUR
World No 4 Lee Westwood has confirmed he will play in the BMW PGA Championship next month, completing a powerful trio of Englishmen in the world’s top ten who are chasing victory at Wentworth Club.
Ian Poulter, the 2010 WGC – Accenture Match Play champion and World No 6, has also confirmed his participation in the European Tour’s flagship event from May 20-23 after an absence of two years while World No 8, Paul Casey, returns to defend the title he won in dramatic fashion last May.
Westwood, who was runner-up to Phil Mickelson at the Masters Tournament earlier this month, had his best performance at Wentworth Club in 2000, when he was tied second behind Colin Montgomerie on his way to becoming European No 1 for the first time.
He has been in a rich vein of form in the past 12 months, winning the inaugural Dubai World Championship in November to be crowned Europe’s No 1 for 2009. He also finished third in the Open Championship and the US PGA Championship last year, before going one better in the first Major of 2010 after a brilliant performance at Augusta National.
Westwood, who celebrated his 37th birthday on Saturday, is relishing seeing the extensive redevelopment to Wentworth Club’s iconic West Course, which has undergone major work over the last year following a redesign of all 18 greens by three-time Major Champion Ernie Els.
“They have changed it dramatically and to be honest I welcome the changes because the way I usually play on the course has meant that I have never really had a chance around Wentworth. Any change is a good change for me,” said Westwood.
“I think that we will now have an even stronger field for what is our flagship event and that can only be good for the tournament. I would love to win it – the world ranking points on offer are great and the prize fund is one of the biggest in the world and it is the European Tour’s most prestigious event.”
Poulter returns to the West Course for the first time since 2007, having enjoyed a tremendous start to the year, finishing second in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship in January before going on to win the WGC-Accenture Match Play in February and finishing tied tenth in the Masters Tournament earlier this month.
Those outstanding results have helped propel Poulter to the top of The Race to Dubai Rankings and he said: “I am delighted to be playing in the BMW PGA Championship again. It is a great Championship and I am looking forward to checking out the modifications to the West Course which Ernie has undertaken and I am sure the changes will be for the better.”
Casey, who was beaten by Poulter for the the WGC – Accenture Match Play title in the first all-English final, is excited about returning to Wentworth Club as defending champion, having finally shaken off the rib injury which marred the second half of last season.
“I know I’m going to have a good attitude about defending my title,” he said. “I’m intrigued to see what Ernie’s done and how the greens perform, but I know with these two par fives to finish we are going to have fun and excitement. Anything can happen, and that’s the beauty of Wentworth.
“From the history, to the course, the clubhouse, the players … that is why everyone one of us playing on The European Tour wants to win. Just stand in the middle of the first fairway and look back at the tee and that famous clubhouse and it makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.”
Another Englishman in the World top 20 – Luke Donald – has also entered for the sixth successive season. The 32 year old from High Wycombe, who has twice finished in the top three in the past three years, makes his first appearance on European soil since last November. However the World No 19 has shown outstanding form in America this year and will be keen to add the BMW PGA title to his list of achievements.
Ross Fisher, who played at Surrey’s Wentworth Club as a junior, is also in the field and hoping to improve on the second place he achieved in 2009 following a compelling final-round duel with Casey. Their compatriot Oliver Wilson, another who grew up in Surrey, will also play, and the 29 year old will hope to build on a promising start to the 2010 season which has yielded fifth place finishes at the Commercialbank Qatar Masters and the WGC – Accenture Match Play.
Fisher said: “There is a sentimental element for me as well because I grew up there and it was a classic Harry Colt course so it will be quite strange for me.
“Behind the Majors and WGCs the BMW PGA is the one that I would most like to win. You just have to look at the history of the course, the past champions and then, of course, my own history of growing up there. It would be a very nice title to win.”
About the BMW PGA Championship 2010
The BMW PGA Championship 2010 will boast one of the strongest fields on the European Tour International Schedule, with many of the world’s best players in action pursuing a prize fund of €4,500,000. All four days will be broadcast live on both BBC Television (May 22 and 23) and Sky Sports (May 20 and 21) with extensive highlights on both channels.

O'Meara and Price win better-ball US seniors' event

FROM THE PGA.COM WEBSITE
Mark O'Meara got the help he needed to win for the first time on the Champions Tour.
O'Meara and Nick Price teamed to beat Joey Sindelar and John Cook on the second hole of a play-off in the better-ball Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf at Savannah, Georgia
"It's very special, obviously," O'Meara said. "I've been practising hard and I've finished second a number of times. Having Nick as a partner out there helped a lot. To be honest, I was relaxed out there."
O'Meara, the 1998 Masters and British Open winner, won for the first time since the PGA European Tour's 2004 Dubai Desert Classic
"I felt like the timing was right, because we're both playing pretty well," said Price, who rolled in a 40-foot putt for eagle on No. 7. "I'm really happy for Mark and I'm happy because it's been over a year since I've won."
It looked as if this one might slip away, too, until Cook missed a 4-foot putt that would have won it on the final hole of regulation.
"We dodged a bullet there," Price said. "I feel bad for John, too, because he was probably playing the best of all of us today."
Playing in rain and heavy wind, both teams bogeyed the first playoff hole and returned to play the 457-yard 18th again, where Price won it with a 7-foot par putt.
"It was probably playing 500 yards today," Price said. "It was at least 20 yards of wind on each shot, and it was two clubs. And it's just so hard to keep the ball on that green."
Cook and Sindelar (61) and O'Meara and Price (62) finished at 28-under 188 in the 54-hole event at The Club at Savannah Harbor, an island layout in the Savannah River.
Andy Bean and Lu Chien-soon (64) were a stroke back, and Bernhard Langer-Tom Lehman (63) and Fred Couples-Jay Haas (64) tied for fourth at 23 under.
Ken Green, making his first Champions Tour start since having his lower right leg amputated after an auto accident in June that killed his brother and girlfriend, teamed with Mike Reid tied for 26th at 12 under. They had a 71 on Sunday.
NOTES: O'Meara's winless streak included 181 events on the US PGA Tour and 57 on the Champions Tour. ... Couples remains in the lead in the season-long Schwab Cup race with 1,015 points. Langer is second with 818, followed by Price with 461. ... The team of Tom Watson and Andy North, who were playing together in this event even before it was for official money, made bogey at No. 6, ending at 257 holes their string of never going over par.

Australia's Porter wins Nationwide Tour's South Georgia Classic

FROM THE PGA.COM WEBSITE
Australian Ewan Porter figured out a way to keep his emotions in check and it paid off with his second career win on the Nationwide Tour. Porter fired a final-round, 2-under-par 70 and won the rain-delayed South Georgia Classic by one shot over second-year pro Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela.
Porter finished four trips around the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club at 11-under 277, one better than Vegas, who refused to fold under Sunday's back-nine pressure. Veteran Brandt Jobe closed with a 69 to wind up at 9-under and solo third while Canadian David Hearn, who held the outright led after each of the first three rounds, shot a 2-over 74 and wound up fourth.
"I'm absolutely stunned to have done this," said Porter, who had missed all four cuts on Tour this year. "To be honest, I didn't expect too much this week. This is totally unexpected. It's overwhelming. This is a huge step forward in my career."
Playing in the final threesome with Hearn and Vegas, Porter made up a one-stroke deficit on Hearn with a birdie on the second hole and hovered near the lead for a few holes before taking command with birdies at Nos. 8, 10 and 11 to go up by three.
"The putt on eight was a big one," said Porter of the 30-footer. "I was just trying to lag it down there close. And then the chip-in on 10 was the same thing, I was just trying to get it up there close. I played with Jhonattan the last 36 holes and I tried not to let his length intimidate me. I knew that if I could just keep it in play I'll be able to handle it."
Porter handled it just fine, making clutch pars and only one bogey down the stretch.
"I feel a little more comfortable on the back nine here. I can just picture the shots better," said Porter. "Those last five holes, my comfort level allowed me to open up my shoulders and relax a bit."
Vegas had a couple of chances but couldn't get the putts to fall. Hearn was the victim of a couple of loose shots and failed to put any hard pressure on the Aussie.
"I definitely felt the pressure down the stretch," said Porter. "I didn't want to play another hole that's for sure. My heart rate was way too high and I could feel the collar getting a little tight. It was a wonderful battle with them today and I was fortunate to come out on top."
The key to Porter's win came on the greens, where he finished second in putting. It was quite a turnaround from a week ago when he missed the cut in Shanghai, China.
"I have to be honest, I hit the ball ten times better last week," he said. "My putting was absolutely amazing. Last week I putted like Stevie Wonder and this week I putted like Brad Faxon."
Porter finished off the win with a steady, two-putt par from 25 on the 72nd hole. Not bad for a guy who wasn't sure if he'd wind up playing this Tour or one back home.
Porter has had a tumultuous last few months. Plans to settle in West Palm Beach with his girlfriend fell through at the last minute when a job for her didn't materialize. After missing the cut in Shanghai, he flew to South Florida to clean out his apartment. He arrived in South Georgia on Wednesday night and teed it up without the benefit of a practice round.
"It's definitely amazing when you don't throw clubs and don't get ahead of yourself," said Porter. "It's a big lesson learned in terms of demeanor and such and I've still got a lot to learn."
