Y E Yang leads by one in Volvo China Open

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
US PGA Championship winner Y E Yang will take a one-shot lead over Finland's Mikko Ilonen and Welshman Jamie Donaldson into the final round of the Volvo China Open at Suzhou Jinji Lake on Sunday.
The Korean looks in ominous form as he seeks to build on last week's eighth-place finish at the Masters last Sunday. He carded a bogey-free, four-under-par 68 to top the leaderboard at 14 under-par 202.

Fast-starting Ilonen carded six birdies in his 68, while Donaldson dropped just one shot in a three-under 69 to remain in the hunt for a maiden European Tour title after finishing sixth in Andalucia two weeks ago.
"Today was bogey free but it was also tough to save par on a lot of occasions," said 38-year-old Yang.
"Overall, it was difficult but I am very satisfied that I saved a lot of pars and it puts me in a good position on the leaderboard. Hopefully I can sustain my performance on Sunday."
After overnight leader Kim Do-hoon, Yang, Donaldson and Ilonen all held the lead on the front nine, Yang briefly opened up a two-shot advantage with four to play.
But after playing partner Donaldson also picked up a shot at the par five 14th, Ilonen's sixth birdie of the day arrived at the par-three 17th to trim the advantage and push the pair two shots clear of Spain's Pablo Larrazabal (70), with Kim (73) and 2005 champion Stephen Dodd (66) at 10 under-par.

SGU JUNIOR TOUR 72-HOLER

O'Neil and Fairburn share halfway
lead at Newmachar on 139 (-5)

Conor O'Neil (Pollok) and Simon Fairburn (Torwoodlee) are leading on five-under-par 139 at the halfway stage of the first 72-hole SGU Junior Tour event at Newmachar Golf Club, near Aberdeen.
Both of today's rounds were over the "easier" Swailend course. On Sunday, the final 36 holes will be played over the other Dave Thomas-designed course at Newmachar, Hawkshill where trees come much more into play and where even Tartan Tour professionals have been known to have high scores on the pro-am circuit.
O'Neil, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, improved by nine shots from morning to afternoon with a two-over-par 74 followed by a seven-under-par 65, a brilliant round indeed.
Fairburn was a bit more consistent - 69 in the morning and 70 after lunch.
They are a shot ahead of Liam Johnston (Dumfries & County) who has had a pair of 70s and three strokes clear of third-placed Paul McPhee (King James VI) who had a 69 and 73 for 142.
Crowned Scottish boys' match-play champion at West Kilbride last Saturday, Grant Forrest failed to survive the halfway cut in the midweek Peter McEvoy Trophy at Copt Heath, Solihull and a Newmachar he saddled himself with a four-over-par 76 in the first round. But a two-under 70 in the second round was more like the Craigielaw youngster's true form.
He will start the second day in joint eight place with Calum Stewart (Brora) (75-71).
Ian Redford (St Andrews New), runner-up in the Scottish boys' championship, and Scott Gibson (Southerness), a creditable fourth in the Peter McEvoy Trophy are in joint fifth place on level par 144.

Irish boys beat Dutch 10-2 to snatch U-16 quads title

Ireland produced an astonishing last-day performance to snatch the Under-16 quadrangular title from under the noses of Wales and Scotland.
The Scots beat table-leaders Wales 7 1/2-4 1/2 but Ireland hammered the Netherlands 10-2.
That meant that the Dutch boys, Scotland and Wales all finished with 4pt apiece for two wins out of three.
The tie-breaker was individual games won and the Irish 1opt last-day haul gave them a +25 tally, compared with Wales +19.5 and Scotland +18.5
Netherlands finished bottom of the table with 0pt and +12.

Cor blimey! Greg Owen shares South Carolina lead

FROM THE BBC SPORT WEBSITE
England's Greg Owen moved into a three-way tie for the lead after the second round of the Verizon Heritage tournament in South Carolina.
Owen made four birdies as he went round in 69 to join Americans Jim Furyk and Charles Howell at the top of the leaderboard on seven under par.
Fellow Englishman Paul Casey returned to form with a superb 65 to make the cut at two under after his opening round of 75.
Compatriots Brian Davis and Luke Donald are well placed at five under par.
Glasgow's Martin Laird made an early bogey and double bogey, but hit back with five birdies to move to four under for the tournament.
Overnight leader KJ Choi fell back with a 74, while Spain's Sergio Garcia followed his opening 67 with a disastrous 77 that saw him miss the cut by two strokes. Garcia had been experimenting with a weaker grip. Too weak, perhaps?
Florida-based Owen was simply delighted to make the cut at Hilton Head after failing to do so at five of his eight US PGA Tour starts this season.
"It's been a while since I played on a Saturday, I'm just trying to play well," he said.
"I've been feeling great this week. It's nice to start playing well, and I love coming here.
"The putter is behaving itself so far this week. The wind picked up and made it tough this afternoon, but all in all I played some nice golf."

Jerry Rice misses cut on Nationwide Tour debut

FROM THE PGATOUR.COM WEBSITE
HAYWARD, California -- Hall of Fame NFL wide receiver Jerry Rice shot a 5-over 76 -- seven strokes better than his opening 83 -- on Friday in the Fresh Express Classic to miss the cut in his Nationwide Tour debut.
"Shooting 76 today, I'm happy with that, because I had to fight my way back from yesterday," said Rice, also the tournament host. "I wanted to play well, but the most important thing for me was for the tournament to be a success."
The 47-year-old former San Francisco 49ers star, who only recently turned pro in golf, had three birdies, three bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey in the second round. At 17-over par, Rice finished a stroke ahead of last-place Brendon Todd. The cut was at 2 under.
"I am going to continue to work on my game," Rice said. "I learned so much this week. The first day, I made rookie mistakes. Last night, I was so upset I couldn't sleep. I woke up at 2 a.m. and was just staring at the ceiling. I had my clothes picked out, over on a chair and I couldn't wait for the sun to rise.
"Today, I was able to take my time. I slowed down everything. My caddie, Andy (Miller), kept reminding me to just calm down. Yesterday, I went away from everything -- my swing, a new putter. ... That was stupid. Today, I went back to my Nike putter and my regular swing. I took my time. So it was a lot better."
Canadian David Hearn followed his opening 64 with a 65 to top the leaderboard at 13 under. PGA Tour winner Frank Lickliter II (66) and Argentina's Miguel Angel Carballo (66) were tied for second at 11 under.

US SENIORS TOUR REPORT

O'Meara leads after putting tip from Tiger

A putting tip that Mark O'Meara received from Tiger Woods on the 10th green at Augusta National last week paid off at Lutz, Florida yesterday.
O'Meara shot a 6-under 65, taking a one-stroke lead over Mike Reid and defending champion Nick Price in the first round of the US Seniors Tour's Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am.
"I got a little bit of a putting lesson from Tiger last week at the Masters," said O'Meara, a long-time friend and confidant of the world's No 1. "I was kind of rakey on my putts, so he wanted me to swing kind of two degrees more out to the right. I didn't putt that great at Augusta, but today I putted a lot better."
Woods was pictured last week with cell phone in hand last week, taking a video of O'Meara's putting stroke. The two friends played a practice round before the Masters, where O'Meara missed the cut and Woods finished tied fourth in his return to golf.
O'Meara, starting at the 10th, made six birides in eight holes, beginning his purple patch at the par-3 second.
"Anytime you do six birdies in nine holes, you'll take it," O'Meara said. "I putted well, though, and anyone, on any tour, needs to putt well to win."
Two-time champion Tom Watson followed his memorable weekend at the Masters with a 67, and was among a group of eight players within two shots of the lead. Joining him at 4 under were Tom Pernice Jr., Tommy Armour III, Bernhard Langer, Russ Cochran and Tom Jenkins.
"Playing this course is like going through a minefield," said Watson, who won the tournament in 2007 and '08. "There are a lot of shots over the water and to keep it out of the water (needs to be) your game plan."
Price had six birdies during his round, even though he could have been forgiven for a slow start. The defending champion wasn't sure how he would fare after arriving late Wednesday from a family trip to Egypt.
"My swing, I feel, is still coming back over the Atlantic," Price said before the start of the tournament. "I'd be very surprised if I contended this week."
He's joined at 5 under by Reid, who started his round with a double bogey but bounced back with five birdies and an eagle the rest of the way.
"Golf is just -- it's such an in-the-moment challenge," Reid said. "Every time you tee the ball up, you're going to be tested, but you hope that your of a mind to keep going forward even though you may be stumbling."
