US PGA TOUR REPORT, SCORES

Harrington slips, Furyk takes
-
three-shot lead into Round 4

Padraig Harrington slipped out of the lead with a third-round 72 in the Transitions Championship at Innisbrook, Tampa Bay in Florida.
The Dubliner will go into Sunday's final round on 206, four shots behind the new leader, Jim Furyk who produced a bogey-free round of four-under-par 67.
At 11-under-par 202, Furyk, pictured, is suddenly three shots clear of four men sharing second place.
Joint sixth alongside Harrington on 206 is England's Luke Donald who matched Furyk's Saturday special of 67.
Furyk has not won on the US Tour since the Canadian Open in 2007 - a total of 58 no-win tournaments. This is the longest lean spell he has had since he was a rookie.
It is also three years since Furyk led after three rounds.
Furyk will not be counting his chickens, even with a three-shot lead. He has a strong pack of contenders behind him. Defending champion Retief Goosen and past Traditions winners K J Choi and Carl Petterson are in the large group on 205.
Justin Rose also had a third-round 67 and is on 208.
Glasgow's Martin Laird lost ground after starting the tournament with two steady 70s. His two-over-par 73 today dropped him well down the field to 213, the same score as Ross Fisher who had a 75.

England get to keep the cup after fifth victory

REPORT FROM THE ENGLISH GOLF UNION WEBSITE
England retained the European Nations Cup with a dazzling display of golf over four days at Sotogrande in southern Spain. The four-man team of Matt Haines, Tom Lewis, Chris Paisley and Tommy Fleetwood, who capped a personal triumph with a hole-in-one, finished on 830, 34 under par, 23 strokes ahead of runners-up Italy and 27 clear of Denmark in third place.
With the best three scores to count on each day, the England quartet led from start to finish and such was their supremacy over the other 17 competing teams that their overall score was ten shots better than their winning mark last year.
The only missing element was the individual prize which Sam Hutsby won last year. That went to Italy’s Nino Bertasio on 275, one ahead of Fleetwood while Haines was third on 279.
In fact, all four England players finished in the top six with Paisley joint fourth on 280 and British and English boy champion Lewis sixth on 282.
The English quartet made their mark from the start. They led on day one with 207, eight strokes better than Denmark and Germany, then added 210 on day two for 417, nine ahead of the Germans.
Despite being outscored by Italy with 203 to 205 on day three, thanks mainly to a brilliant 64 from Bertasio, England increased their advantage to 19 strokes over the second-placed Italians which left them in an almost unassailable position going into the final day.
Even then, the English boys maintained their dominance, posting 208 to Italy’s 212 to win by 23 strokes.
Fleetwood recorded England’s lowest round with 67 on day three, finishing birdie-eagle-birdie, the eagle being his ‘ace’ with a seven iron at the 171yd 17th, while all England’s counting scores on each day were under par. It was Fleetwood’s second ever hole-in-one.
“It was a staggering performance,” said team manager Bob Meston. “It was a real team effort and as this was England’s fifth victory in the event, we are being allowed to keep the trophy in perpetuity.”
The England team’s performance must have impressed Walker Cup captain Nigel Edwards, who was present for all four days.

ALLIANZ TOUR

Baldwin joint third, Russell shares fifth in France

There were two British players among the leading finishers in this week's French Allianz Tour event - the Trophy Jean Garaialde - at Hossegor.
Englishman Matthew Baldwin finished joint third on 13-under-par 271 - three shots behind the winner, Spain's Ivo Giner - and Scot Raymond Russell tied for fifth place on 274.
A second Scot in the field, Gavin Dear from Scone, Perthshire, finished joint 24th on 280.
Baldwin had rounds of 72, 65, 64 and 70 to earn 2,925 Euros, compared with Giner's payslip for 7,250 Euros.
Like all these satellite tours, the standard is high. You have to score several under par or lose ground.
Russell from Prestonpans had a great first round (65) and a pretty good final round (68) but in between he had scores of 70 and 71, which made the difference between contesting the lead in the second half tournament and coming joint fifth, six shots off the pace.
Nevertheless it was Russell's best performance anywhere for a long time and though the cheque for 2,150 Euros is by no means his biggest, the boost to his confidence should be tremendous.
Dear, who is also a member of the Alps Tour, had four very steady rounds of 69, 71, 70 and 70 for four-under-par 280 for which he earned 676 Euros, which probably did not clear his expenses.
Again, on these Satellite tours you have to average top-three finishes to make money.

EUROPEAN TOUR DAY 3 IN MOROCCO

Springbok Oosthuizen jumps clear of Davies

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen produced a nine-under-par 64 to open up a two-shot lead over Welshman Rhys Davies after the third round of the King Hassan II Trophy at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Morocco today.
Oosthuizen carded 10 birdies and one bogey on the Red course to move on to 20 under par for the tournament.
Davies, the halfway leader after an eight-under 64 on the par-72 Blue course on Friday, shot a 68 on the Red to sit two clear of France's Thomas Levet and another South African, Thomas Aiken.
The 24-year-old Welshman, a team-mate of Rory McIlroy at the 2007 Walker Cup and third in the Malaysian Open two weeks ago, picked up three shots on the back nine after four birdies and two bogeys on the front nine to keep himself firmly in contention going into the final round.
Levet also went round in 68 on Saturday, with Aiken shooting a 67.
Spain's Ignacio Garrido was one stroke further back following a 69, while England's Danny Willett shot up the leaderboard thanks to a 64, including four birdies in four holes from 13 to 16.
That put Willett on 14 under, one shot ahead of fellow countryman Robert Rock, who carded a 67.
Nick Dougherty, the first-round leader, could only manage a 72, though, to sit on 11 under, nine off the pace.

Raymond Russell falls back to joint 10th place in France

FROM THE SCOTSMAN SPORT.COM WEBSITE
Raymond Russell's hopes of a first tournament victory in 14 years suffered a huge blow in the third round of the Allianz Tour's £45,000 French International at Golf d'Hossegor.
The Prestonpans pro, who won the European Tour's Cannes Open in 1996, spilled five shots on his closing three holes in a level-par 71 and dropped five strokes off the pace with a seven-under 206.
Russell, joint fourth in the 1998 Open, had been sharing the lead after covering 15 holes in five-under. But bogeys at 16 and 17, and a crippling triple-bogey seven on the last, plunged the Scot back into a tie for tenth.
Englishman Matthew Baldwin and France's Adrien Bernadet lead the way with a round to go on 12-under 201s.
Perth rookie Gavin Dear, runner-up on the Alps Tour last month, birdied two of his last three holes in a one-under 70 and sits in a share of 26th with a three-under 210.

Padraig Harrington leads at halfway
-
in Florida after best round of year

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Padraig Harrington is the halfway leader at the US PGA Tour's Transitions Championship in Florida.
Four behind after his opening 69 at the Copperhead course in Palm Harbour, Tampa Bay, Ireland's three-time Major winner produced a six under par 65, his low round of the year, for an eight under total.
With first round leader Garrett Willis shooting a 77 and making the cut with only a stroke to spare at level par, Harrington heads into the closing 36 holes one ahead of Americans Jim Furyk and Bubba Watson, Swede Carl Pettersson and defending champion Retief Goosen.
Harrington, without a Tour win since he won back-to-back Majors at The Open Championship and US PGA Championship two years ago, grabbed seven birdies.
Starting on the back nine the Dubliner, who missed Wednesday's pro-am to attend a St Patrick's Day dinner hosted by President Obama at the White House, pitched to two feet on the 11th and then struck a 185 yard approach to four feet at the 16th.
He then had to hole from only 20 inches, eight feet and ten feet on the first, third and fifth greens and after his only dropped shot at the next he found the target from eight and ten feet again at the seventh and ninth.
Harrington, joint third in the WGC-CA Championship in Miami last Sunday, was tied for top spot at that point, but in the group behind him Furyk bunkered his drive down the ninth and bogeyed to match Pettersson's bogey-free 68.
"I'm capable of winning in the form I'm in," said Harrington. "Am I in my best form? No. Am I getting there? Yes.
"You put yourself out there. That tests where your game is at. Some weeks the results happen and you get a win and some weeks they won't.
"I've played tournaments where I've played great coming down the stretch and not won and I've played tournaments where I've played average and won.
"Because I don't know so many of the shots here I have to keep hitting at the flags and it seems to be working quite nicely.
"The greens are superb and the wind was predictable, so it was a good morning for scoring."
Germany’s Alex Cejka and English pair Ross Fisher and Luke Donald are four under and three under respectively, with Scot Martin Laird one further back.
Greg Owen survived the cut on the limit by parring the last 13 holes, but Brian Davis missed by one after a closing bogey.
Justin Rose, 59th in the world and looking to climb into the top 50 in time for the Masters Tournament, kept that hope alive by improving five strokes on his opening 73 and moving to one under.

Last round costs Gunn a high finish in Arizona

Dornoch exile Jimmy Gunn earned $1,275 for a joint 23rd place finish in this week's Gateway Tour event in Arizona, at Trilogy Golf Club at Power Ranch.
Gunn would have been disappointed with that because, with one round to go, he was on the tail of the leaders.
But Jimmy slumped to a one-over-par 72 in the final round after earlier scores of 69 and 66, finishing on six-under-par 207 - a very good 54-hole total but, on this highly competitive satellite tour, not low enough to make even the top 20.
Gunn had birdies at the fifth, long 13th and long 17th in his final round but dropped vital shots at the first, short sixth, ninth and 16th.
There was a three-way tie for the top money. Jesse Mueller shot an incredible final round of 11-under-par 60 - see what I mean about high standards - to hit the 14-under-par 199 mark. His earlier scores were 67 and 72.
Kendall Critchfield equalled that total with scores of 70, 65 and 64 and the third American in the play-off was Ryan Hogue with scores of 67, 64 and 78.
No news yet of how many holes the play-off lasted but we do know the $16,000 top prize went to Critchield with Mueller and Hogue receiving $8,575 each.
