EUROPEAN TOUR ON ROAD TO MOROCCO

Rhys Davies' eight-under 64

gives him halfway lead

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Welshman Rhys Davies fired the lowest round of his European Tour career to take the halfway lead at the Trophée Hassan II near Rabat in Morocco today.
The 24 year old, pictured right, who played four years on the US college circuit as a student at East Tennessee State University and was a team-mate of Rory McIlroy at the 2007 Walker Cup, finished third in the Maybank Malaysian Open two weeks ago. Here in Morocco, the Edinburgh-born Davies, son of a Welsh table-tennis international, added an eight under par 64 to his opening 68.
Davies, British boys' champion in 2003 after losing in the 2002 final, goes into the weekend two in front of former Ryder Cup pair Thomas Levet and Ignacio Garrido and also South African Louis Oosthuizen.
This week's tournament is appearing on The European Tour International Schedule for the first time in its long history, and Levet is delighted with the new status of a competition which, having been pro-am for the first two days, now switches to professionals only.
“I came here in 1990 and played these two courses and I love the place,” said the Frenchman. “I’m playing with a sponsor of mine, the head of Lacoste in Morocco and he’s an 18 handicapper and he played very well yesterday. Today he struggled a little especially when he saw his name on the leaderboard but I was very pleased for him.”
First round leader Nick Dougherty, who like Davies switched from the Red course at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam to the shorter and easier Blue, scored three shots worse and dropped to joint fifth place on ten under.
"This time last year I didn't really have any status in Europe," said Bridgend player Davies, "but I managed to get a win on the Challenge Tour and everything sort of spiralled from there.
"It's been really good the last 12 months. I am feeling very confident - you play golf to play well and to get to the top of the leaderboard.
"I think if you don't enjoy it at the top you wouldn't really want to do it."
As for his eight-birdie round Davies added: "It went great. I rolled some really good putts in and overall it was a good day's work."
Oosthuizen matched his 64, while Frenchman Levet returned a 65 and Spaniard Garrido a 67.
“I hit some wayward iron shots today but otherwise it was pretty good,” said Oosthuizen. “I putted nicely and basically I am trying to work on my consistency.
“It’s good to see Thomas Aiken up there alongside me. We both grew up with Charl Schwartzel so it is something of an inspiration to us to watch up win twice this year and get to the top of The Race to Dubai. We realise we have to step up to that new level that he has reached and it really is a challenge for all of us younger South Africans.”
Spaniard Garrido won this event in 1996 before going on to capture his maiden European Tour title and winning a Ryder Cup cap a year later.
“On the front nine I played solid,” he said. “A lot of shots went close and that’s where I got my birdies. On the back nine I holed a couple of long putts and took advantage of the par fives so it was okay.”
Dougherty, joined on ten under by Aiken and Joost Luiten of The Netherlands, commented: "I didn't play great. The Blue course is quite a bit easier and I didn't capitalise on it, but three under is not too bad and I'm still in contention.
"I've not put two good rounds together in a long while and I'm proud of my performance."
He had a hat-trick of birdies from the 15th and was four under for the round with seven to go, but played them in one over.
Luiten is returning from a long-standing wrist problem, which was only correctly treated with a visit to a doctor specialising in field hockey injuries.
“I saw so many doctors who were specialists but couldn’t locate the problem,” he said. “Then I came across this doctor who works with the Dutch field hockey team and he knew straight away what it was and said it is a common injury in hockey. He operated on my left wrist and it seems to have worked, but it’s been difficult to come out here and try to play at this level after so long. It’s tougher than I expected.”
SCOTSWATCH: Only three Scots made it through to the last rounds, the cut eliminating all those with totals of 144 (one under par) or worse. Stephen Gallacher is the best placed Scots qualifier in joint 16th place on 138 but a second-round 72 was six shots worse than his sparkling first-day effort. He did birdie the 10th, 12th and 13th. For David Drysdale it was the proverbial game of two halves. He covered the first nine holes in 31 shots with birdies at the first, second, fourth, sixth and seventh but slumped to 39 for the second nine with a bad run of bogey-double bogey-bogey through 10, 11 and 12. He did birdie the 14th and is tied 39th on 141.
For Peter Whiteford from Kirkcaldy it was the rocky Road to Morocco through the first six holes of his 72 for 142 and a share of 47th place. He had a double bogey 6 at the first and a triple bogey 7 at the sixth. Full marks to him, therefore, for being able to get it out in 38, thanks to birdies at the third and fifth. No bogeys at all in an inward 32 with birdies at the 10th, 14th, 16th and 17th.

Aberdonian Richie Ramsay missed the cut by one shot, not so much because of a second-round 69 but all about that opening round of 75. He had five birdies today, at the second, sixth, eighth, 11th and 17th in halves of 34-35. Had he done that yesterday he would have been in contention going into the third round.
Alastair Forsyth missed out with a 71 for 145, Marc Warren with a 70, also for 145 and Gary Orr with a 73 for 147.

Paul Lawrie signs sponsorship agreement

with Pentagon Freight Services

NEWS RELEASE
Former Open champion Paul Lawrie has signed a sponsorship agreement with Pentagon Freight Services, a global service provider to the Oil & Gas and Marine sectors.
Lawrie, from Aberdeen, won the Open Championship in 1999 on top of victories on the European Tour in Spain, Qatar, Wales and Scotland. He represented the European Ryder Cup team in 1999.
Pentagon Freight Services see a natural crossover with Lawrie and their own company values; both have become established global players, dedicated to continuous improvement with a commitment to further success and development.
George Booth (Director, Pentagon Freight Services UK PLC) is delighted to announce their partnership with Lawrie and commented:
“It gives us great pleasure to announce this partnership with Paul Lawrie and align Pentagon Freight Services with one of Scotland’s great achievers in sport. We both have a strong connection to the North-east of Scotland but Paul also competes in many of our other key markets in Europe, the United Arab Emirates and Asia.”
Geoff Smith (CEO, Pentagon Group) added: “Our prestigious association with Paul demonstrates that Pentagon is now a global brand, recognised the world over. Through this deal, we trust that our valued clients will further recognise our commitment to quality and delivery of the highest standard.”
Lawrie was also delighted to strengthen his portfolio of sponsors and is pleased to be helping promote the services of another company from his home town of Aberdeen. He stated: “I’m delighted to start a relationship with Pentagon Freight Services, a company with a strong Aberdeen presence, and I look forward to helping them with their global business.”
The agreement will see Lawrie wearing the Pentagon Freight Services corporate logo on his headwear in the coming year.

SCRATCH GOLFER POWELL
-
IS NEW PAUL LAWRIE
-
FOUNDATION MANAGER

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Scratch golfer and successful curler Iain Powell, originally from Brora, has been appointed to take over from Murray Carnie as manager of the Paul Lawrie Foundation.
Carnie, who succeed PGA professional John Caven in the job three or four years ago, has had to give up the demanding post because of pressure of work as a physical education teacher.
Powell is a member of Murcar Links and Brora golf clubs and was a member of the former’s Aberdeen Pennant League-winning team last season. He is also a winner of the Brora four-day open and James Braid Open and has played with five times Open champion Peter Thomson during one of his visits to Brora.
“I have a background in the leisure industry, having worked in my family’s hotel business for many years and have established a great network of contacts through my work at Dick Fleming's but I think the biggest asset I will bring to the Foundation is my passion for golf,” said Iain.
“I love playing and I’m determined to get as many youngsters playing the game as possible so they can realise the benefits too.
“Paul and Marian Lawrie, alongwith the help of Murray and Lynda Carnie have done fantastic job of building the Foundation to what it is now and I want to make sure of its continued success.”
Paul Lawrie, winner of the Open at Carnoustie in 1999, probably does more for junior golf in Scotland than any other PGA professional and, as Murray Carnie found out, the range and depth of the Foundation programme is increasing every year. It has the grant support of the Royal & Ancient.
The Paul Lawrie Foundation runs a full calendar of boys' and girls' golf tournaments, mainly in the North-east of Scotland but also one national event (the Junior Jug), and also supports the annual Scottish schools championship. The foundation is also into football at boys' level.
As if that were not enough, there is also the Paul Lawrie Team - a select group of hand-picked young golfers Paul has taken under his wing to groom and help to climb the ladder.
Paul selected for his team David Law, winner last year of both the Scottish boys and men's amateur match-play championships, before his terrific double whammy last year.

David Roger wins West of Scotland Golfers Alliance Championship.

By JOHN CARRELL
Secretary, West of Scotland Golfers Alliance
A total of 64 amateurs and 16 professionals contested the outing at Falkirk Tryst Golf Club. Conditions were fantastic with no wind and plenty of sunshine. The course, in excellent condition for this time of the year, produced many praiseful comments. Our thanks to all at Falkirk Tryst for helping to make our day successful.
The WSGA Championship is held over two rounds, one at Lanark Golf Club and one at Falkirk Tryst Golf Club. David Roger (Windyhill Golf Club) took the honours at both events to walk away with the championship.
Two Eagles and five birdies helped David win the event at Falkirk with a four-under-par card of 66. This, combined with his 68 at Lanark last week, gave him a total of 134 over the two outings to become the 73rd winner of the event which has been running for 77 years. Nearest finisher was last year's champion, Stephen Gray, on 137.
New member this year Johathan D'Aguillar (Glasgow) (11) and Hugh Semple (Hayston) (9) tied for first place to share the Handicap prize, carding net 68s.

South Africa 21, Scotland 7 in Test Match

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
South Africa continued their dominant form into the second and final day of the inaugural Test Match against Scotland, played at Leopard Creek Country Club near Malalane in Mpumalanga. The host nation won comfortably by 21pt to seven.
Enjoying the cloudy and cool weather, the teams started the day with a singles and four better-ball matches in the morning, in that order. The South Africans won all but one of these games. Jared Harvey and Dean O’Riley lost by two holes to Scotland’s Gordon Yates and Mark Bookless.
Going into lunch, South Africa were 8pt clear of Scotland, meaning only 2pt, being two wins, was all that was required to win the Test Match.
The first two South Africans out, in the afternoon singles, Riekus Nortje and Johan Bekker respectively, did the deed for the host nation, beating Yates and Bookless by one and two holes respectively.
Tyrone Ryan was the only South African to lose his singles, against Steve McEwan, 4 and 3.
Jared Harvey managed a half against the experienced Scot, Glenn Campbell.
With all the remaining matches going to South Africa, some in grand fashion, the home team amassed a further 7 1/2pt to their opponents' 1 1/2, from the singles.
Dean O’Riley, South Africa’s top ranked amateur, won handsomely 8 and 7 against Paul Sheilds. “O’Riley was six under after 11 holes, playing superb golf,” said Neil Homann, the South African team’s assistant manager.
J G Claassen also showed his class, beating Greg Paterson of Scotland 6 and 5.
“Johann Rupert and members of Leopard Creek have been fantastic to us this week,” explained Homann. He said that with Rupert’s support and members opening up their houses to the teams along with the uncompromising manner in which the club’s staff prepared the golf course and looked after their every need, made the week most memorable.
The Scotland team now fly down to Cape Town and take on a provincial team at Pearl Valley Golf Estates near Paarl before returning home.
