John Daly tries to Twitter his own back on golf writer

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
John Daly was so irritated that a Florida newspaper wrote about his US PGA Tour disciplinary file that he referred to the writer as a "jerk" on Twitter and posted the writer's mobile phone number for his followers to call.
The Florida Times-Union reported on Tuesday that the Daly file was now public record through the player's unsuccessful libel lawsuit against the newspaper. The file is 456 pages and notes that Daly has been suspended five times and cited 21 times for not giving his best effort.
"Here's the jerk who writes non-news article on debut of my show – call and flood his line and let's tell him how we feel," Daly said on Twitter, adding the cell phone number of golf writer Garry Smits.
The story appeared the day Daly's reality show made its debut on The Golf Channel.
Smits, the golf writer for the Florida Times-Union, said he received about 30 calls after a series of three tweets late Tuesday night, and nearly 100 calls by early Wednesday afternoon. Smits said most of the callers hung up, and about 30 left messages.
"His fans are very unhappy," Smits said.
Daly removed the tweets by mid-morning on Wednesday. Bud Martin, president of SFX World and Daly's agent, could not be reached for comment. The US PGA Tour would not comment on Daly's tweets.
"Over the haters – To me, this isn't journalism, it's paparazzi-like gossip. Please try harder to find some real news next time Gary," said Daly's second tweet.
It was followed by, "Gnight all but here's Gary Smits cell number in case you didn't get it ... non sports writer."
The US PGA Tour does not comment on player discipline, but it was forced to turn over Daly's file to attorneys for the newspaper's parent company when Daly sued for libel. The file is now public record.
The lawsuit was dismissed a year ago, and Daly was ordered to pay nearly $272,000 in legal fees.
The 456-page file includes several newspaper clippings and incidents that already have been reported during Daly's tumultuous career. It also included some startling numbers – he was placed on probation six times, ordered to go to counselling or alcohol rehab seven times, cited for conduct unbecoming a professional 11 times and fined nearly $100,000.
Daly has not had his full US PGA Tour card since 2006 and has been playing on sponsor exemptions.

Ian Poulter is European Tour Golfer of Month for first time

FROM THE IRISH TIMES WEBSITE
Ian Poulter was named European Tour Golfer of the Month for February after claiming his first WGC title at last month’s Accenture Match Play at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Dove Mountain, Arizona.
Poulter’s 4 and 2 win over compatriot Paul Casey in the event’s first all-European final, was also his first victory on American soil and took him to a career high of fifth in the world rankings.
In Arizona he also defeated Justin Leonard, Adam Scott, Jeev Milkha Singh, Thongchai Jaidee, and Sergio Garcia.
It is the first time the 34-year-old Ryder Cup player has won the monthly award.
“It felt amazing to win a World Golf Championship and I certainly felt very comfortable and in control on the golf course in Arizona,” said Poulter. “It was also great to move up to five in the world and to be recognised with the golfer of the month award at the end of it all capped a truly great week for me.
“I worked a lot on my game in the off season, particularly on the shots from 100 yards and in, and I think that paid off - I certainly felt like I came out strongly at the start of the year. I feel my game has been in pretty good shape for some time but it was just about ironing out some of the small creases - that has been the thing that has made the big difference.”

April 30 to May 2 at ExCel venue

FREE ENTRY TO THE LONDON GOLF SHOW

The London Golf Show returns for its sixth outing from April 30-May 2 and this year every golf club member in the country can attend for free.
As part of a new relationship with the England Golf Partnership, every golf club member in the country will be entitled to free entry to the golfing extravaganza, all they have to do is register on www.londongolfshow.com before April 17.
Roger Moreland, chief operating officer of the England Golf Partnership, said: “The London Golf Show is established as the country’s major consumer event for golfers and we wanted to ensure our members can benefit from it.
“Because every member of a golf club is a member of the English Golf Union or the English Women’s Golf Association, which are founder members of the England Golf Partnership, it means our support benefits golfers across the country with free membership.
“This is a fantastic addition to our support for the show and we’re looking forward to even more golfers having the chance to attend and see everything that’s going on in golf.”
The London Golf Show returns to ExCeL for its sixth outing from April 30 to May 2 and will once again offer the entire golfing spectrum under one roof.
Visitors will be able to test the latest clubs from all the big brands, enjoy custom fitting, see cutting-edge golf gadgets, try their hand at a host of competitions to win fantastic prizes and much more.
In addition, this year’s event runs alongside the inaugural London Tennis Show and visitors to one event get free entry to the other.

North-east Alliance at Newburgh report, scores

Scott Larkin completes
-
hat-trick of victories

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Banchory's Scott Larkin became the first player for a few years to win three North-east Golfers' Alliance competitions in a row when he claimed today's top prize at Newburgh-on-Ythan with a two-under-par round of 62 over the short winter course at the Aberdeenshire venue.
Larkin, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, a former American college circuit player as a student at the College of Charleston, has worked in a Banchory hotel since his return from the States. Today he was following up victories at Murcar Links and Montrose Links on the preceding Wednesdays.
He did not make the best of starts, bogeying the first and fourth, although he did birdie the second but a run of six pars in a row steadied him up before he birdied the 11th, 12th, 16th and 17th.
A bogey at the short last hole still got him home in three-under-par 29.
Runner-up, three strokes behind in a field of 85 players, was Roy Pirie (Caledonian) with birdies at the sixth and 15th but bogeys at the seventh, 16th and 17th in halves of 32 and 33.
Joint third on 66 were Scottish seniors match-play champion George Paterson (Northern) 35-31, Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh) 32-34, home course pro Ian Bratton (Newburgh) 32-34 and Alexander Wiseman (Fraserburgh) 33-33.
Secretary Ron Menzies is looking for an alternative venue for next Wednesday's first round of the NE Alliance championship, scheduled for Duff House Royal. The Banff course has been affected by the severe winter. We'll keep you posted of Ron's success in this direction on this website.

Fairways Target Golf Leagues Week 6

By Neil D. Hampton
Golf & Marketing Director, Loch Ness Golf Course
Web: www.golflochness.com

MONDAY LEAGUE REPORT
Once again the frosty weather made it a tricky task keeping the balls in the targets on Monday night but it did make for some exciting viewing.
League leaders Orion maintained their position at the head of affairs with an easy two points as the Neverwillbees didn’t field a team, but their nearest challengers both won their games as well to keep up the pressure.
BM Trucks beat the Sainties and the Parahandies, who top scored with just 29, defeated the Specialists. These three teams are now guaranteed to be in the top half when the split comes after next Monday’s games.
The most exciting battle will be for the final spot in the top half which is currently occupied by the Royal Swingers. They are just two points ahead of the Specialists, whom the play next week, and with their shots scored tally almost the same it will be a winner-takes-all crunch game.
At the foot of the table the Sainties are still yet to score but with a total of four games still to be played in the league they still have plenty time to avoid the wooden spoon.

MONDAY NIGHT RESULTS
Happy Gilmour’s 4 – 27 Royal Swingers
Orion 21 – 0 The Neverwillbees
Parahandies 29 – 13 Specialists
Sainties 13 – 21 BM Trucks.

TUESDAY NIGHT REPORT
The icy conditions continued for the Tuesday teams and it was the Mad Drivers who made the most of the slippery conditions to post the night’s top score. Their performance belied their lowly league position and the result lifted them from the foot of the table as they leapfrogged their opposition Fairways.
At the other end of the table the Luckless Leadbetters' poor run of form continued as they lost to league leaders Kenyon’s Klan, a result that puts the Leadbetters in danger of failing to make the top half after the split and leaves the Klan two points clear at the top.
Fairhurst Fore are hot on the heels on Kenyon’s Klan with another solid victory of the Senior Moments and they are joined by the Muirton Marvels who had the closest of battles with the Coastguards winning by just one shot.

TUESDAY NIGHT RESULTS
Coastguards 14 – 15 Muirton Marvels
Mad Drivers 33 – 12 Fairways
King Kenyon’s Klan 17 – 12 Luckless Leadbetters
Fairhurst Fore 22 – 11 Senior Moments.

Law, McLean, Kellett and White are

Scotland four for Sotogrande

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
Scotland’s leading men's amateur golfers will be aiming to add to last year’s European amateur team championship success with a victory in the European Nations Championship which gets underway in Spain later this month (March 17 to 20).
Colville Park’s Ross Kellett is the only player named in the side announced today to feature from the six-man team who defeated England in the European Final in Conwy last July, as the Scots look for their second title in the space of three years at the Copa Real Golf Club in Sotogrande.
Kellett is joined by reigning Scottish Men’s and Boys’ champion David Law (Hazlehead) , 2009 Leven Gold Medal winner Philip McLean (Peterhead) and former Scottish boys' match-play champion James White (Lundin).
All four players will be making their debut in the tournament, formerly named the Sherry Cup.
McLean, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, who finished fourth in the 2009 SGU Order of Merit, is relishing lining up in the championship:
“It’s a real honour to be selected for Scotland in this event and I hope we can build on the recent success our teams have enjoyed in the World and European Championships. We’re all new to this one, but we’ve had a good build up to the season in the States, Portugal and Spain and the boys are well prepared.”
“The championship has a strong history and some great players have taken part over the years, including Padraig Harrington and Sergio Garcia, as well as Ross Fisher and Richie Ramsay of late. It would be great to follow in their footsteps and doing well would be a good boost for the season ahead,” added the 22-year-old.
Scotland finished 11th in last year’s tournament, having won the title the previous year with a side that featured Callum Macaulay, Wallace Booth, Keir McNicoll and Scott Henry. The best three scores each day contribute to the team score, whilst the event also features an individual championship.
European Tour players Richie Ramsay and Andrew McArthur finished joint runners-up in the individual event back in 2005.
England will defend the European Nations Championship with a team which includes Walker Cup players Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Haines and Chris Paisley.
The Scotland team is sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management and TaylorMade-adidas Golf.
