Parnevik (44) may have to retire because of back problems

Sweden's Jesper Parnevik says his future career as a pro golfer is in jeopardy. He will likely have to give up the game because of a broken vertebrae in his lower back.
Parnevik, a five-time winner on the US PGA Tour, told a Swedish newspaper this week that doctors said he needs to have joint fusion surgery, “which means I can't play anymore.”
The paper that Parnevik had emergency back surgery on Monday that would keep him from playing for at least a month. The 44-year-old Swedish golfer said a more advanced operation that could risk his career “seems inevitable.”
Parnevik finished second in the 1994 Open at Turnberry - where he might have won if he had not misread the scoreboard playing the last hole. He is considered one of Sweden's greatest golfers. He had surgery on his right hip last year and did not play a tournament until Q-school in December, when he withdrew before the six rounds were over because he "wasn't ready."
Back problems forced Parnevik to withdraw from the Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles last week. He will visit a physiotherapist in Detroit next week in a last-ditch attempt to prolong his career.
“I'll have to hope for a miracle if there's going to be any more competitive golf,” said Parnevik.

David Law's six-birdie
comeback in Alliance
at Fraserburgh

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Fears that a fractured knuckle on his left hand might have a detrimental effect on his future golfing career were dispelled by a six-birdie performance by Hazlehead's David Law, the Scottish boys' and men's amateur champion, at Fraserburgh today.
Making his competitive comeback after being out of action since the injury in mid-November, the result of an unprovoked, late-night assault in an Aberdeen city centre street, teenager Law, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency at Royal Troon, shot six birdies and four bogeys in returning a two-under-par round of 61 over a 16-hole winter course at the Buchan venue.
In a field of 77, that gave him a joint second finish with Robert Lamb (Newmachar) and Fraserburgh's John Mitchell behind the home course head greenkeeper, Kris Nicol, who had a bogey-free round of four-under-par 59. Nicol also won at Edzell last week.
Nicol did not have as many birdies as Law but he had nothing worse than a par on his card on a lovely sunny day when there were many favourable comments by the players about the course.
Nobody complained about playing "only" 16 holes and everyone appreciated being able to play on 13 "proper" greens.
Barring any adverse reaction, which is unlikely, Law will play in next week's Portuguese amateur international championship.

Celtic Manor Resort unveils £2million bridge built as

link to practice ground for 2010 Ryder Cup

NEWS RELEASE
A vast new bridge which will transport players and spectators to the practice ground during this year’s Ryder Cup has been officially opened by the First Minister of Wales.
Carwyn Jones AM cut the ribbon on the 120-metre long, cable stayed bridge over the River Usk in the company of Sir Terry Matthews, Chairman of The Celtic Manor Resort, and Richard Hills, Europe’s Ryder Cup Director.
The £2m twin-suspension bridge completes a £16m investment by The Celtic Manor Resort in building a new course, clubhouse and surrounding infrastructure, developments that were promised when one of sport’s biggest events was awarded to Wales back in 2001.
Primarily a footbridge for spectators, the bridge will also be able to carry golf buggies transporting players and officials as well as emergency vehicles, should the need arise, when The Ryder Cup is staged at Celtic Manor between 27th September and 3rd October this year.
Sir Terry Matthews, Chairman of The Celtic Manor Resort, said: “We are proud to open this wonderful new bridge as the final major piece of construction for this year’s Ryder Cup.
“We have invested a lot of time and resources in creating not only The Twenty Ten Course, the first golf course in history to be purpose built for staging The Ryder Cup, but also the surrounding infrastructure.
“This bridge to the new practice ground is an important part of that commitment to provide the best possible playing conditions for the top golfers from Europe and America who will be gracing the event, as well as enhance the spectator experience at The 38th Ryder Cup.”
As with the construction of The Twenty Ten Course and its clubhouse, the new bridge was built by Welsh contractors, bringing further benefits to the economy of Wales. Port Talbot-based Andrew Scott Ltd was the main construction contractor and Rowecord Engineering of Newport provided the superstructure and all steelwork.
Carwyn Jones, First Minister of Wales, said: “The Ryder Cup is a huge event for Wales and I congratulate Sir Terry Matthews and the team at The Celtic Manor Resort on completing the final piece of the infrastructure required on-site to host such a high-profile event, which will be a superb showcase for Wales.”
The bridge was designed with close attention to the environmental and ecological sensitivities of the tidal River Usk. A six-metre exclusion zone on either side of the river bank protects otter holts and ensures the migrating patterns of salmon and shad fish are not affected.
As well as the Ryder Cup practice ground, the bridge also links to a huge TV compound housing the world’s sports broadcasters on the Caerleon side of the river. On the golf course side, a vast tented village of spectator attractions will occupy the existing Twenty Ten practice ground between the river and the first tee.
Richard Hills, Europe’s Ryder Cup Director, said: “The installation of the bridge is a vital component of The 2010 Ryder Cup, facilitating ease of access to both sides of the River Usk. The bridge will also be able to carry emergency vehicles and with this opening another part of the infrastructure required to host The 2010 Ryder Cup is officially in place.
“The Celtic Manor Resort as host venue has continually demonstrated superb commitment and we congratulate them for making this happen in such good time and thank Sir Terry Matthews whose vision has led to the biennial contest being hosted in Wales for the first time.”

Aegon tees up new deal for Saltmans

FROM THE EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS WEBSITE
By MARTIN DEMPSTER
The Saltman brothers – Elliot, Lloyd and Zack – have been handed a major boost by Edinburgh-based Aegon extending its sponsorship of the talented golfing trio by three years.
'Team Saltman' has earned the new deal after impressing Aegon bosses since the life assurance and pensions company started supporting them."We are delighted to continue our sponsorship of 'Team Saltman' as part of our commitment to developing and supporting emerging talent," said Steve Clode, Aegon's Director of Marketing and Customer Strategy.
"The boys have achieved a great deal already which is evident from last year's results. We are looking forward to supporting them over the next three years as they go on to further success."
Aegon were particularly pleased to see Elliot and Lloyd qualify for last year's Open at Turnberry, where Zack shared the spotlight in the build up to the world's oldest major.
This year Lloyd, 24, will be competing mainly on the Challenge Tour while Elliot, 27, and Zack, 21, will be splitting their time between the PGA EuroPro Tour and the Alps Tour.
Speaking on behalf of Team Saltman, Lloyd, who will be determined to qualify again for this year's Open at St Andrews, where he finished as leading amateur in 2005, said: "We're delighted to have Aegon's continued support for the next three years.
"To secure sponsorship from such a large organisation shows that Aegon is confident in our abilities and its support means a great deal to us. The sponsorship will enable us to focus on developing our game and building on our position. We'll definitely be pushing for higher rankings on the tours and further success in 2010 and beyond."

SCROLL DOWN FOR PAUL LAWRIE'S VIEW

David Drysdale struggling to

get back in the groove

FROM THE SCOTSMAN.SPORT.COM WEBSITE
By Martin Dempster
David Drysdale, the top Scot in last year's Race to Dubai, has played with three different sets of irons in four weeks after the new groove regulation forced him to bin his trusty old ones.
"It's been a tough start to the year because of the major equipment changes," said Drysdale, one of six Scots in the field for this week's Avantha Masters in India.
"I'm now on my third set of irons in four weeks and the problem is purely the groove regulations change. I had irons I had used for five years and Callaway no longer manufacture them, so I was forced to change model.
"Clubs are the tools of your trade and last season I had a three-wood in the bag I had used for 10 years, a driver I had used for three and those irons, so I don't change my equipment very often. "So the changes have been tough and even now I am not 100 per cent happy. But there isn't much I can do about it until I get back and visit Callaway in London."
After missing the cut in his opening three events of the year, Drysdale felt a bit happier with his game when he finished just outside the top 30 in last week's Dubai Desert Classic.
"I am getting nearer the equipment I want to use," he added. "I also had my coach, David Downie, in Dubai and we worked on a couple of things. I would say I am getting there slowly.
"I have two weeks off after India after five weeks on the road. I am coming home for a week and then spending a week in Dubai for the (better] weather before heading for Malaysia."
Richie Ramsay, Peter Whiteford, Steven O'Hara, Andrew Coltart and Callum Macaulay are the other Scots chasing a £220,000 prize fund at the DLF Golf & Country Club in New Delhi, the latter having received a sponsor's invite.
+The full article above appears in The Scotsman newspaper.

... BUT PAUL LAWRIE HAS NOT BEEN AFFECTED

Former Open champion Paul Lawrie does not have the grooves problem being experienced by David Drysdale and many other pro golfers. The Aberdonian explained to www.scottishgolfview.com:

"It hasn't affected me at all. There are two reasons for that:
1 I played with this year's grooves last year in my irons.
2 I don't like to spin the ball with my wedges.
I used to use a wedge at home for months before using it in a tournament. I prefer to run the ball to the hole instead of spinning it."

Fairways Target Golf Leagues Report Week 3

By Neil D. Hampton
Golf & Marketing Director, Loch Ness Golf Course
Web: www.golflochness.com
It was tough going on Monday night with the longest target in use, and it had the highest points value, so scores were hard to come by. It was Orion who had the best score of 40 which easily saw off the Royal Swingers who are on a downward spiral after their heroics in the first week and didn’t even manage to get into double figures.
BM Trucks were next in the high scores but they had a very tight tussle against the Parahandies and it was the one ball that the Trucks managed in the far target that was the difference.
The good news story of the week is the Happy Gilmour’s, a new team this season, finally got the fire burning and secured their first win. It was the Sainties who were the unfortunate opposition but they did make the Gilmour’s job easier by failing to score.
The final game was the closest of the night and it was the Neverwillbees who sneaked home against the Specialists by five shots, courtesy of one more ball in the middle target.
These results leave BM Trucks and Orion undefeated at the top of the table and the Sainties still to get off the mark at the bottom.
MONDAY RESULTS
The Neverwillbees 20 – 15 Specialists
Parahandies 28 – 34 BM Trucks
Happy Gilmour’s 24 – 0 Sainties
Orion 40 – 7 Royal Swingers.

TUESDAY LEAGUE
With the furthest target still in play, the Tuesday teams also found scoring difficult and there were a couple of surprise results. The biggest was King Kenyon’s Klan scoring only 12 and being defeated by the Mad Drivers who managed just three more but this was enough to take the valuable two points.
The Luckless Leadbetters and the Senior Moments were showing everyone how it should be done. The Leadbetters top scored with 53 and the Senior Moments can feel unlucky that they were drawn against them this week as their 31 would have won almost any other game.
The Fairhurst Fore had the second best score of 33 against the Coastguards who themselves put up a spirited 23. Fairways finally managed to field a team and it was the Muirton Marvels that they faced so it was a great result for Fairways to take the win in what is really their first outing of the season.
It must be said, however, that the Marvels did put in a rather poor performance that was nearly the lowest score of the night.
These results leave a very symmetrical table with the top four teams tied on four points and the bottom four teams all tied on two points.
TUESDAY RESULTS
Mad Drivers 15 – 12 King Kenyon’s Klan
Senior Moments 31 – 53 Luckless Leadbetters
Fairhurst 33 – 22 Coastguards
Fairways 23 – 13 Muirton Marvels.

Lloyd Saltman is confident he can keep up with his neighbour

FROM THE SCOTSMAN.SPORT.COM WEBSITE
By Martin Dempster
Lloyd Saltman now has Richie Ramsay as a near neighbour and is determined he won't have to wait long before they are both leaving their East Lothian homes to play on the European Tour.
While Ramsay, the South African Open champion, has left his former Scotland team-mate behind since they joined the professional ranks, Saltman remains confident he too can climb to the top of the ladder.Speaking on the day that Aegon, the Edinburgh-based assurance and pensions company, announced it was continuing to support Lloyd and his two brothers, Elliot and Zack, until 2012, he said:
"Richie's win in South Africa was great for him and Scottish golf too."It has also given me confidence because Richie and I competed a lot together as amateurs – we played foursomes for both Scotland and Great Britain & Ireland – and I feel I'm not too far away from being a winner on Tour myself.
"Richie has said that he feels I can join him on the main European circuit and that sort of thing is great to hear as he knows my game. However, I'm not going to try and force anything and push too hard. I feel I'm going about things the right way and the one thing I am determined to do is stay patient."
Aberdonian Ramsay has bought a house near Edinburgh to cut down on the travelling as he bids to build on his breakthrough win just before Christmas.
"He's living just across the road from me and, before he headed off to play in the Desert events, I was over at his flat helping him with something he'd bought out of Ikea," added Saltman, who is itching to get his 2010 Challenge Tour campaign underway.
At the moment, he's only ninth reserve for the opening event on the schedule, in Colombia, later this month and is probably going to have to wait another four weeks to get up and running in Kenya.
"I was actually quite shocked to see how far down the list I was for Colombia but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I might still get in there," said the 24-year-old. I've been playing well on the Hi5 Tour in Spain and have also been doing some good work with Colin Brooks (his coach] so overall I'm really happy."
Elliot, 27, and Zack, 21, will be playing mainly on the PGA EuroPro Tour again this year and the trio are delighted that 'Team Saltman' has received renewed support from Aegon.
"Without this support, none of us would be able to do what we are doing," said Lloyd. "They obviously have faith in our ability and all three of us are confident we can repay that faith."
All three siblings impressed Aegon chiefs with the way they handled themselves when Lloyd and Elliot played in last year's Open at Turnberry, while they have also represented the company at a number of non-golfing events in and around Edinburgh.
"We were all brought up in a certain way and it is nice if that is paying off for us now," remarked Lloyd.
