Matteo Manassero sets hot pace in Junior

British amateur champion Matteo Manassero opened up a two-stroke lead with a five-under-par 65 in the first round of the Junior Orange Bowl international boys' golf championship over the Biltmore course, Coral Gables, Florida today.
With the temperature touching 78 degrees, Italy's Manassero, No 2 in the R&A World Amateur Rankings, was just as hot with halves of 33-32 against the par of 35-35.
He birdied the last two holes for a bag of six birdies on the day.
Compatriot Andrea Bolognesi (31-36), Curtis Thompson (Florida) (32-35) and French amateur champion Romain Wattel (32-35) shared second place on 67. Wattel beat Ross Kellett (Colville Park) in the recent final of the Argentina men's amateur international championship.
England's representative Jonathan Bell ended the first day in joint 18th place on one-over-par 71 (34-37).
In the girls' event, Daisy Nielsen (Denmark) shared the lead with Moriya Jutanugarn (Thailand) on one-under-par 69.
