Gales cut Royal Dornoch Young Masters' pro-am to nine holes

By ROBIN WILSON
Saturday's gales forced a suspension of play in the Royal Dornoch Young Masters pro-am after all teams had completed nine holes. Their scores at this point were used to determine the prizewinners.
The Royal Dornoch local trio of Paul York, Dennis Albutt and Moira Rennie with professional James McGhee (Turnhouse) had a winning nine-hole total of 23pts , two clear of a trio of clubgolf Scotland junior coaches, Robert Carr (Strathpeffer), Simon Stokes (Invergordon) and Jean Hunter (Bonar Bridge-Ardgay) playing alongside local young professional Greig McBain.
With 20pt another Dornoch team came third - Neil Gordon, Grant Shannon, and Lena Cordes with East Kilbride's Graham Fox.

Alfred Dunhill Links Championship ends Monday

Luke Donald leads by one but Richie

Ramsay still has home win chance

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Luke Donald gave himself the chance to end three and a half years without a win by matching the lowest round of his European Tour career in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship today.
Donald, pictured right, followed a 65 at the St Andrews' Old Course with an eight under par 64 at Kingsbarns and heads back to the Home Of Golf for Monday's final round with a one-stroke lead over fellow Englishman Simon Dyson and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy.
One shot further back are Michael Hoey, who went round the Old Course in two under, fellow Northern Irishman Darren Clarke, Spain’s Rafael Cabrera-Bello and Aberdeen's Richie Ramsay - who shot five under, seven under and two under respectively at Kingsbarns.
The tournament, which has a first prize of more than £485,000, goes into an extra day because no play was possible on Saturday because of gale-force winds.
Donald enjoyed a flying start, picking up three birdies in the first four holes. Four more in six followed, beginning at the eighth.
Although he dropped a shot at the 15th, Donald birdied the next two and parred the last to match his outward nine 32.
Donald, whose nine birdies constituted the round of the day at Kingsbarns, said: “I gave myself a lot of chances from ten, 15 feet and just really rolled the ball nicely today.
“I made pretty much everything I looked at. Just one spoilt by a bad swing on 15, hit it in the water but still made a pretty good 4 there.
“I knew that the wind was pretty benign for here, and there's definitely some scoring opportunities out on this course, so I thought if I could make five or six birdies that, would be good, but obviously went a few better.”
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s final round, he added: “There are some great names and pretty packed leaderboard, too.
“I'm obviously going to have to not play safe at all. If the weather is anything like that, I'm going to have to go out there and shoot a lot of birdies and hope it's good enough.
“This is a great tournament for the European Tour, and around the world, and it's got a great field. It's been a while since I've won, so hopefully I can get back in that winning circle.”
McIlroy picked up an eagle on the par 5 third but three bogeys in the next five holes meant he slipped back before picking up a birdie at the long ninth.
Having gone out in 36 though, the 20 year old went round the back nine in 33, thanks to birdies at the par 4 11th and 14th, plus the par 5 12th.
“I'll have to play very well to win,” he said. “It's a very congested leaderboard and I'm sure someone will come out and shoot a 66 out of that pack. I'll have to play very well and just try and keep my nose in front.”
McIlroy, playing with his father Gerry who celebrates his 50th birthday tomorrow, added: “It will be great tomorrow and hopefully I can play well again and he can knock a few putts in and we might challenge in the team event, as well.”
Dyson began the day on six under but picked up a birdie at the par five third and eagled the par four sixth before gaining another shot on the 12th.
He dropped a shot at the 15th but recovered by birdieing the 16th and last.
Asked what it would mean to win tomorrow, Dyson revealed: “It would be very special. This is one of, if not, the biggest tournament on our calendar. So it will be an interesting day.”
Meanwhile, amateur Robert Hersov hit a hole in one on the 157yd eighth hole - his 17th hole of the day - at Carnoustie.
The South African said: "I took out a four iron and by then we knew we weren't making the cut so I was in relaxed mode and I hit the ball and it was just so crisp.
“It rolled up the green and everyone started to say it was going in and it did!”
Leaders in the amateur team contest are Denmark's Soren Hansen and Irish stud farm owner Kieran McManus, son of J P McManus, whose 31 under par total of 185 led Australian Scott Strange and former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh by a shot.

Peter Whiteford joint 6th with best last round of day

Molinari blows it - and Lima steps in to

win Challenge Tour event in Denmark

From Challenge Tour Press Officer Paul Symes
On a day of high drama in Denmark, Portugal’s José-Filipe Lima took advantage of an uncharacteristic late wobble by playing partner Edoardo Molinari of Italy to win the truncated ECCO Tour Championship.
With just two of the 54 holes left to play at a windswept Holstebro GK, in Jutland, Lima trailed the seemingly invincible Italian by three strokes and, by his own admission, had settled for second place.
But when Molinari followed a triple bogey 6 at the short 17th hole, where he found trees off the tee, with a bogey at the last to finish on four under par, Lima suddenly found himself with two putts from 20 feet for a level par round of 72 and a third Challenge Tour title of his career.
Despite leaving his birdie attempt some four feet short, he found the middle of the cup with his second putt to finish on five under par which, in lingering high winds and heavy rain which had caused the cancellation of third day, was an exceptional effort in the circumstances.
Lima, whose two previous titles came at the Aa St Omer Open and Challenge de España in 2004, climbed three places to second in the Rankings with earnings of €116,042 courtesy of his €28,800 winner’s cheque.
Meanwhile Molinari, who would have gained automatic promotion to the European Tour had he held on for his third Challenge Tour title of the season, had to console himself with a runner up cheque for €19,800 which saw him become the first player to break through the €200,000 barrier.
Lima will now head to Toulouse for next week’s Challenge Tour event, before preparing for the Portugal Masters on The European Tour a week later.
He said: “My heart was really beating when I was standing over that putt, because it’s been a while since I’ve won, so I can’t really remember what it feels like. But I’m so happy, because with two holes to play, I was just hoping to stay in second place. Edoardo had been so playing well, but then when he found the trees on the 17th, I knew I had a chance. I felt very sorry for him, but I’m so happy for myself, because I played really well on all three days.
“Today I just missed one drive all day, which was a really good effort in the wind. But I missed so many putts today, and short ones too. I think the longest putt I holed was about from two metres, so I really didn’t think it was going to be my day. But in the end, I got my reward for keeping going.
“I’ll take a lot of confidence from this win, not just for this season but also into next. Hopefully I can play well at the Portugal Masters and finish the Challenge Tour season on a high note by finishing second in the Rankings, then I can look forward to playing again on The European Tour next year.”
Finland’s Roope Kakko finished in third place on two under par after carding a round of 75, with Fredrik Andersson Hed a further two shots back on level par after the Swede signed for a 72.
Peter Whiteford finished joint sixth, thanks to a final-round 70, the best of the day

Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

Tight at the top in Sunday's third round

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy continued to hold a share of the lead at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship today after going round the front nine at Kingsbarns in 36 to remain 11 under par.
Alongside the 20-year-old were England’s Simon Dyson, Finland’s Mikko Ilonen and Scotland's Richie Ramsay - all playing at Kingsbarns.
An eagle on the long third briefly took McIlroy into sole possession of the lead but three bogeys in the next five holes meant he slipped back before picking up a birdie on the par five ninth.
The trio of Scotland’s Alastair Forsyth, Ireland’s Paul McGinley and Northern Ireland’s Michael Hoey were one shot back.
Welshman Phillip Price, meanwhile, withdrew with a shoulder injury after one hole at St Andrews. On three over he probably needed eight birdies to make tonight's 54 hole cut.
High winds meant no play was possible across any of the three Scottish links courses yesterday, with the tournament now extending into tomorrow.

Renfrewshire beat Dunbartonshire in final

of Scottish area team championship

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
By ROSS MUNRO
Renfrewshire stormed to their fourth victory in the Scottish Area Team Championship with a resounding 4-1 win over Dumbartonshire in this afternoon’s final at Crail.
Murdo Carmichael’s men erased the memory of last year’s final defeat by Ayrshire with a comprehensive win over local rivals Dumbartonshire.
Former Scottish mid-amateur champion Matthew Clark (Kilmalcolm) claimed the winning point with a one-hole win over Paul Betty (Hayston) as the sun shone on the East Neuk after yesterday's gales-enforced abandonment.
Renfrewshire got off to a flyer in the final and the result never looked in doubt, with Gordon Stevenson and Bryan Adam cruising to a 6 and 5 foursome victory over Colin Peddie and Grant Minnes in the opening tie.
Former Scotland captain Craig Watson defeated Gordon Yates by the same margin for Renfrewshire to surge to a 2-0 lead before Clark’s final green win signalled celebration time.
In a sporting contest, the final two matches (Ronnie Clark v Andrew Campbell and Andrew Farmer v Kevin Smyth) were declared halved.
A delighted Carmichael, captaining his side for the first time, said:
“I’d firstly like to congratulate all the teams for their great sportsmanship over the two days here at Crail. My team have shown tremendous spirit and a never say die attitude throughout the season and they’ve been rewarded with a terrific win.
“The golf on show was first class with birdies all over the place. We probably had the oldest team in the final but I think our experience was important and counted for a lot in the tight matches, particularly this morning. We have a team of proven winners and this tops a fantastic year for our area.”
Renfrewshire’s place in the final had looked in doubt during this morning’s semi-final match against the North-east. With the other four matches evenly poised, reigning DM Hall Scottish mid-amateur champion Andrew Farmer found himself four down at the turn against Peterhead’s Philip McLean, but bounced back to string together five consecutive 3s from the tenth and seal his match with victory at the last hole to give his side a narrow 3-2 win.
Double Scottish champion David Law (Hazlehead) had earlier earned his side a point with a thrilling first extra hole win over the experienced Watson, whilst Fraserburgh’s Kris Nicol notched their other singles win.
Dumbartonshire’s also won their semi-final by a hard fought 3-2 margin over Lanarkshire, thanks to a 3 and 2 victory for Kevin Smyth in the final match against Stewart Henderson.
Paul Betty won his singles match whilst Peddie and Minnes had clinched the opening foursomes tie. Colville Park’s Ross Kellett and Airdrie’s Steven Rennie scored the Lanarkshire points.
Saturday's semi-finals were first suspended and then abandoned because of high winds. Both the semi-finals and final were rescheduled for today under a condensed format of one foursome and four singles in each tie.
This is the last Scottish area championship under its present format. Next year it will be condensed into one weekend with all the areas sending teams to compete in the Saturday stroke-play after which four teams will qualify for Sunday's semi-finals and final.
Sunday results:
