Challenge Tour event in Denmark cut to 54 holes

From Challenge Tour Press Officer Paul Symes
The Challenge Tour's ECCO Tour Championship has been reduced to 54 holes after the third day was washed out by torrential rain in Jutland, Denmark today.
With standing water on the fairways and greens at Holstebro GK rendering some holes unplayable, Tournament Director Thomas Waldenstadt took the decision to suspend play.
The third and final round will resume at 8.30am on Sunday morning, but with rain and high winds again predicted, further delays cannot be ruled out.
Waldenstadt said: “When we started the third round at midday, the course was playable – we wouldn’t have started otherwise. The idea was to get as many holes completed today, because the forecast for tomorrow is for more rain. We had been predicted rain today but not until later in the afternoon, so it came sooner than expected. Once it became clear the conditions were making the course unplayable, we took the decision to suspend play and return in the morning to finish the third round.
"Unfortunately the tournament has now been reduced to 54 holes, but I felt we had no alternative in the circumstances. Hopefully we will get a full day’s play tomorrow, to allow us to complete the tournament.”
Edoardo Molinari, the current Challenge Tour Number One, is currently leading the event by one stroke from Finland’s Roope Kakko and Portugal’s José-Filipe Lima, with England’s John Parry one shot further back on four under par.

What Scotland needs is well-run and

affordable hotels and golf courses

FROM THE GOLFWEEK.COM WEBSITE
By Alistair Tait
The Home of Golf seems to be up for sale. Donald Trump and Herb Kohler are living proof that money can buy anything.
Trump’s planned golf course on the Menie Estate near Aberdeen keeps thundering on toward realization. Trump received good news this week when Aberdeen Council refused to rule out compulsory purchase orders for four properties hampering the project.
The prospect of four families being turned out of their homes for the sake of a golf course does not bear thinking about. I’m sure whole villages have been shifted in other parts of the world to make room for golf courses, but we’re supposed to be civilised over here. Imagine what the families feel like not knowing if they are going to continue living in their own home.
The argument for building the golf course is the business it will bring into the region. I’m not so sure.
Scotland already has golf courses that don’t seem to be making much of a go of it in this financial climate. Look at Turnberry and the ludicrous money Leisurecorp has spent on it. The £85 million spent will take a long time to recoup.
Why Trump and his people think a luxury resort in Aberdeen will have any better chance of success than Turnberry is beyond me. Aberdeen is a nice city, but the golf season (April to October) doesn’t last very long in the North-east of Scotland
Besides, Scotland doesn’t need any more high-end resorts. What it needs is affordable, well-run hotels and golf courses. We’ve got courses in this country charging upwards of £150 per round. Why pay that when you can visit any number of gems for a fraction of the price?
As for here at St. Andrews, Trump is said to be interested in buying Hamilton Hall, the former student residence behind the 18th green that was recently earmarked to become luxury apartments.
Trump has competition from Old Course Hotel owner Herb Kohler and Irish businessman Dermot Desmond. Kohler visited the property during this week’s Alfred Dunhill Championship and is said to be considering an offer to buy the now derelict sandstone building.
Former golf course designer Richard Wax is dismayed that this part of St Andrews heritage might fall into the hands of wealthy businessmen and will only be for the elite.
“The town’s core message is ‘golf for all’ but increasingly, ‘Private/Keep Out’ signals are being generated to the detriment of the image of the town,” Wax told The Times newspaper.
Wax is fronting a consortia to try to buy Hamilton Hall. “Our project is conceived to regenerate the economic life of St. Andrews and Fife. It would bring quality business into town on a year-round basis for the benefit of hotels, bed and breakfasts and the commercial activity across the board.”
Small businesses in the town already feel aggrieved that Kohler’s Old Course hotel gets preferential treatment from the Links Trust because wealthy guests can get tee times through booking rooms in his hotel. Needless to say, any chance that he might take over another part of the town would not go down well.
There is a good chance both projects will get the go ahead and be for the wealthy elite only. The endangered residents on the Menie Estate are living proof that cash is King in Scotland for Sale.

Area team semi-finals and final now to be played on Sunday

The game gale-force winds that have forced the abandonment of Saturday play in the Alfred Dunhill Links championship have also hit the semi-finals of the Scottish men's area team championship finals at Crail Golfing Society's Craighead course in southern Fife.
Play was started in the foursomes between Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire, and North-east versus Renfrewshire (North-east were leading in all three ties) but was suspended later in the morning.
Unlike the European Tour, extending the tournament to Monday is not an option where amateurs are concerned. Some of them actually work for a living!
LATER NEWS FROM CRAIL.
Play abandoned for the day. The semi-finals and the final will now be condensed into two sessions of play on Sunday, featuring one foursome and four singles in each match.

Gale force winds cause Saturday abandonment at three courses

No play today in Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Gale force winds across the north and east of Scotland have forced the abandonment of Saturday’s planned third round in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
European Tour Tournament Director David Garland was left with little option as severe gusts – some reaching over 50 miles per hour, made playing conditions impossible at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns with balls moving on several putting surfaces.
Saturday’s third round will now take place on Sunday October 4 – with all players at the same venues in their original start times. The final round, featuring the top 60 professionals and those tied for 60th place alongside the top 20 amateur teams, will take place at the Old Course in St Andrews on Monday.
“The forecast that we have from every source is for the winds to strengthen during the day, certainly between 11am and 3pm although they will start to taper off into the evening so we have had to abandon the possibility of any play today,” said Garland.
“We are very confident that, although it will be very breezy tomorrow and Monday, that we should be able to finish on time on Monday afternoon.
“Every course was unplayable. Here at St Andrews the exposed holes such as six and seven and 11 and 12 out in the Eden Estuary had problems; at Kingbarns the exposed greens were the fourth and the ninth; while at Carnoustie the fifth green was unplayable.
“We monitored the situation from 7am this morning right up until we made the decision at 9.30am but in all that time, when we had any gusts, the balls were moving on all the putting surfaces we were watching which rendered the course unplayable.
“Theoretically we could have played the tournament over three rounds but we took the decision that this is such a prestigious tournament, with a prize fund of US$5 million, that we wanted to go into Monday. Our stated goal is to play every tournament over 72 holes and going into Monday is a possibility when you begin any golf tournament.”
The decision was met with universal praise by the competitors in this, the ninth Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, including by two of the three players in a share of the lead at the halfway stage, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and Richie Ramsay of Scotland.
McIlroy said: “You can’t argue with the decision. I think everyone can see that, especially here at Kingsbarns. I am just looking at the ninth hole just now and with the way that wind is blowing you wouldn’t be able to get your ball near that green in three shots, never mind trying to putt on it.
“I think the forecast for the next two days is pretty good so if we have to wait till Monday to finish then we have to wait.”
Ramsay said: “I think the right decision has been made. You look at some of the exposed greens on these courses and the balls are just blowing off in all directions so you couldn’t play in that wind. I am struggling to keep my balance standing here at the moment.
“Plus if you put everyone out there and had to bring them on and off the course throughout the day it would be pretty tough to co-ordinate that with three courses.”
Tournament organisers also confirmed that spectators would be given free entry for both the final day’s play on Sunday, October 5 and Monday, October 6.

Knox and Gunn miss cuts in States

Scots Russell Knox and Jimmy Gunn both failed to survive the 36-hole cuts on their respective United States mini-tours yesterday.
Knox, from Inverness originally but based at Jacksonville Beach, Florida since his four years at Jacksonville University, doesn't miss many cuts and he scored his first win in the US Hooters Tour in September.
But he was two shots over the cut line with rounds of 73 and 69 for 142 in the Capitol Chevrolet Classic at The Members Club at Woodcreek, Elgin in South Carolina.
The scoring is always fantastically good on the Hooters Tour. This event has been no exception. Ryan Blaum from Coral Gable Florida leads by three with a 14-under-par tally of 130 (66-64).
His nearest challengers in the chase for the $33,000 first prize are Michigan's Matthew Harmon (69-64) and Luke List from Tennessee with 66 and 67. Both at 11-under 133.
Jimmy Gunn from Royal Dornoch campaigns on the Gateway Tour which operates its Desert Series in Arizona. Gunn had a rare "bad" round in the Gateway Tour Championship at the Legacy Club, shooting a 79 after a 74 for 153. He had only three birdies over the 36 holes - two in the first and one in the second- which is most unlike the Highlander.
Scoring not so hot as the weather here. Trevor Murphy (69-74) and Brian Prouty (71-72) share lead on 153.
