THE NORTH-EAST ALLIANCE DEBATE

From Iain Taylor, Stonehaven

I think some of the reasons why pros are nOt playing in the North-east Alliance might be the fact its still the summer season and they're still busy with big tournaments or still busy with lessons and looking after the pro shops.
Maybe once it gets into the winter season a lot more pros will play in the North-east Alliance competitions, maybe not quite as many there used to be but maybe into the double figures. Another reason for their absence could be the recession, as Colin Nelson pointed out, with the entry fee, petrol money, food etc all adding up if a pro is playing weekly.
What might be a good idea is to ask the pros that don't play or don't play regularly why they aren't playing etc.
I think slow play has a big say in it as well. Nobody likes playing 4-5 hour rounds and end up getting nothing out of it but let's hear from the stay-away pros.

North-east name their team for Scottish area

championship semi-final against Renfrewshire

North-east are the first of the four semi-finalists to name their line-up for the Scottish area team championship ties over the Craighead course at Crail Golfing Society, Fife on Saturday, October 3.
The North-east team to play Renfrewshire is:

BRYAN INNES (Murcar Links). Former Scotland international. Semi-finalist in this year's Allied Surveyors Scottish amateur championship at Royal Troon. Semi-finlist in one of the last British mid-amateur championships ever played, at Muirfield.
ANTHONY BEWS (Murcar Links). Works behind the counter in Gary Forbes' pros' shop at Murcar Links but it's just his job rather than the next step before becoming an assistant pro. Had a +3 handicap earlier in the season.
DAVID LAW (Hazlehead). What a year David's had. Won the Scottish boys' match-play championship at Royal Aberdeen in April and the Allied Surveyors Scottish men's amateur championship at Royal Troon at the end of July. Gained full cap for Scotland in the home internationals.
KRIS NICOL (Fraserburgh). Fraserburgh Golf Club greenkeeper who won the North of Scotland open amateur stroke-play title last year and beat Philip McLean in a play-off for the North-east District Open title at Peterhead.
MARK HALLIDAY (Royal Aberdeen). Former quarter-finalist in British amateur championship.
PHILIP McLEAN (Peterhead). Philip and David Law are the only full-time amateurs in the team. McLean won the Standard Life Leven Gold Medal over 72 holes this summer.

+If officials of the three other semi-finalist teams in the Scottish area championship would like to have their team published, all they have to do is E-mail the info to Colin@scottishgolfview.com If they can supply a few words about each player, as above, so much the better!

Pride of Prestwick! Gavin Lawrie, Allan Thomson and Jonathan King with the trophy that will earn them a trip to the European club final in Turkey (image by courtesy of the Ayrshire Golf website).

Prestwick win Scottish club title ahead of St Andrews

Prestwick made the most of home-town advantage to win the NAC Scottish club championship grand final at Prestwick St Nicholas today by five strokes over 36 holes with a total of 285 (144-141).
Prestwick fielded the decidedly "useful" team of three former Scotland internationals - past Scottish champion Allan Thomson, Jonathan King and Gavin Lawrie.
The Prestwick victors will now represent Scotland in the European club championship final, held as usual in Turkey - at the Klassis Golf Club from October 22 to 24.
St Andrews were runners-up at Prestwick St Nicholas with a total of 290 (146-140). St Andrews' team was made up of Daniel Sommerville, Gary Sharp and Jim Woods.
Powfoot and McDonald Ellon from Aberdeenshire both totalled the third-best aggregate of 295. Powfoot were officially placed third by virtue of having the lower discard score for the final round, compared with McDonald Ellon.
Powfoot's line-up was Michael Grunwell, Scott Wightman and Iain Thomson. McDonald Ellon's trio were Adam Dunton, Kevin Duncan and John Goodward.
FINAL TOTALS (two from three scores to count per round).

A MORE IN-DEPTH REPORT IS AVAILABLE ON THE AYRSHIRE GOLF WEBSITE:
The Prestwick team, which included three former Scotland internationalists, Allan Thomson, Gavin Lawrie and Jonathan King took the title by five shots at an overcast and windy St. Nicholas links, presented in excellent condition by John McLaughlin and his greenkeeping staff.
Prestwick qualified to represent Ayrshire in the championship after the team of Allan Thomson, James Bunch and Jonathan King won the Ayrshire Club Championship title at Loudoun earlier in the year.
Sunday's event was staged over 36 holes stroke-play with the best two scores from three in the morning and the best two scores from three in the afternoon being combined to give the team total.
Prestwick led the way after the first round on 144 with Gavin Lawrie's score of 71 being the best return from the field in the morning round.
After the first 18 holes, Glasgow Golf Union club Sandyhills were Prestwick's closest challengers on 145 with St. Andrews, from Fife, one shot further back on 146.
In the afternoon, former Scottish amateur champion Allan Thomson came back in a superb one under par 33 for a best of the day score of 69 to give Prestwick an excellent chance of taking the title.
In the following game, Gavin Lawrie was three over par standing on the final tee but his tee shot drifted right and flirted with the out of bounds at the clubhouse before coming back into play near the first tee. Unperturbed, Lawrie chipped onto the green and holed the put for a par 3 and a score of 72. to give Prestwick the lead over the 16 club field.
Jonathan King completed Prestwick's efforts with a fine 73 to ensure a useful countback score in the event of a tie.
With Glasgow's Sandyhills fading away in the second round, Prestwick's only challengers appeared to be St. Andrews and when the Fife club team completed their rounds their total came up five adrift of the Ayrshire side.
At the conclusion of the championship the medals were presented to the winners by Championship Chairman Don Bremner and the Club Championship Trophy was handed over to the Prestwick trio by Prestwick St. Nicholas Captain Bill Rae.
This win is Prestwick's first in the 22 year history of the event and is the first win by an Ayrshire club since Kilmarnock (Barassie) took the title in 1994. Other Ayrshire winners were Troon Welbeck (1993) and Kilmarnock Barassie (1992).
Prestwick now go forward to represent Scotland in the European Club Championship final in Antalya, Turkey, from 22nd to 24th October this year.

Forsyth, Drysdale grab

last place in World Cup

qualifier for China

Scotland's Alastair Forysth, pictured, and David Drysdale staged a last-day grandstand finish to grab the third and last place in the $5.5m Omega Mission Hills World Cup in China from November 26 to 29.
They started the final day of foursomes play in fifth place, knowing they had somehow to improve two places - only the first three would qualify - and they did it with a brilliant round of 66. What a great effort under pressure!
Canada’s Graham DeLaet and Stuart Anderson won this European Qualifier in Estonia by two strokes to secure their ticket to China alongside Wales and Scotland in a thrilling final round.
DeLaet and Anderson carded a solid level par 72 in the final round foursomes at the Estonian Golf and Country Club to hold off the challenge of Stephen Dodd and Jamie Donaldson of Wales, who shot a 71 in blustery conditions on the Sea Course.
All eyes were on the battle for the final qualifying spot. Scotland started the day in fifth place, five shots behind third place Portugal and one behind fourth place Austria. Austria’s hopes of qualification were dented early in their round with a double bogey on the first hole and they never recovered.
Scotland made their intentions clear from the start, opening their round with a birdie. It was to be the first of five on their front nine. Portugal kept their nose in front until consecutive bogeys on 13, 14 and 15 put an end to their challenge for the final spot at the Omega Mission Hills World Cup.
Buoyed by their victory in the qualifier, Canada were feeling confident about their chances when they tee it up at Mission Hills Golf Club in the World Cup final in November.
“When Graham and I are both on form, we can definitely contend. We played pretty well today. We had got ourselves far enough in front that we could cruise along today. It is great that we won but our first goal was to qualify this week”, said Anderson
DeLaet added: “We came here to get the job done and finish in the top three and we did it. We are very excited to have the chance to play in China and we have a great chance to really compete when we get there”.
“It’s always exciting to put your country’s bag on your bag and stride down the fairway. Growing up as a kid in Canada you dream of representing your country at ice hockey. Golf is the only sport that I will have the chance to fulfil that dream with and I am really proud.”
Former World Champion Stephen Dodd was full of praise for his partner following the Welsh team’s performance in Estonia.
“Jamie played great this week. It was nice to achieve what we came to achieve and we look forward to the World Cup in China. I think Jamie will relish the experience over there and he’ll come through it with flying colours”.
“It’s been a tough week”, added Donaldson. “We played really well in foursomes. Dead solid with just one bogey in two days. That’s great golf.”
“Doddy is a great player. He was at a bit of a canter this week and it was tough for him to get massively motivated having won the big event before but it was great to know he was there to make the crucial pars and birdies when it really counted.”
“I’m really happy to have the chance to represent Wales. I have played for my country as an amateur but I wanted to play for Wales as a professional and it is great to have the honour to do that. Very happy.”
Scotland were justifiably proud of their final round 66 which was their lowest round of the week, achieved in the toughest conditions and in the more challenging foursomes format.
“It was windy out there but we did everything right”, said Forsyth. “We didn’t hit a poor shot all day and we holed some long putts. Our only bogey came with a three putt from 25 feet on the thirteenth but we’ve struggled with that hole all week. We came straight back and birdied the fourteenth”.
“It would have been a disaster for us if we didn’t qualify this week. I think we underestimated the other teams. We thought it would be relatively easy to qualify but that wasn’t the case. We are over the moon to have made it through”.
Whereas Forsyth knows all about the World Cup, Drysdale will be making his debut in China.
“It’s fantastic. I can’t wait to get to China. I’m really looking forward to it. This is the first time I have represented Scotland. Alistair will fill me in on what it’s all about.”

McIlroy beats Stenson as Britain & Ireland

win Vivendi Trophy by five points

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Britain & Ireland beat Continental Europe for the fifth successive time at the Vivendi Trophy in Paris despite a rousing fightback by Thomas Björn’s side.
Rory McIlroy grabbed the scalp he had craved all week - the 20 year old defeated World No 5 Henrik Stenson on the final green.
And when fellow Ulsterman Graeme McDowell followed that with a 3 and 2 victory over last year's European No 1 Robert Karlsson, back in action after nearly four months out with an eye problem, Paul McGinley's side had enough points won to claim the trophy - even though seven games were still undecided out on the course.
It was just as well the necessary points were gained early, though, as Thomas Björn's men burst into life, enabling the final scoreline to be 16 1/2-11 1/2 for the third time in a row.
Continental Europe actually won the singles 6-4, but had been seven points in arrears overnight.
Most impressive of all on the day was Dane Anders Hansen, an incredible 10 under par for the 12 holes it took him to defeat Nick Dougherty - three under himself - by a 7 and 6 margin that was the biggest in the event's history.
England's Chris Wood had the chance to become the first player to win all his five games, and might have done it had he not settled for a half by conceding Swede Peter Hanson a six footer on the last green of the last game.
"That was the match I wanted all week," said McIlroy, described as "sensational" by Bjorn.
McIlroy, round in a six under 65, commented: "I'd be lying if I said my hands weren't a little shaky over the (five foot) putt on the last, but it's been a fantastic week and I'll be very disappointed if I don't make The Ryder Cup now."
Stenson came back from two down to one up, fell behind again to a spectacular shot at the 14th and then at all square with two to play hooked into the trees and double bogeyed.
"I think I proved to be a worthy opponent to Rory - he's playing fantastic," said the Swede. "I would expect him to be on the squad next year."
McDowell, out in a six under 30 and matching McIlroy's four points out of five, stated: "We played some phenomenal golf and it's a very sweet victory."
Needing only two points from the ten singles, that margin had become 1 1/2 before a shot was struck.
Anthony Wall hurt his shoulder winning his second game on Friday and a day's rest was not enough to get him back into action.
His withdrawal meant a half with Alvaro Quiros, who had been drawn to play Wall.
McGinley was another star of the show in his first attempt at captaincy.
Ryder Cup Captain Colin Montgomerie described the Dubliner as being "incredible", adding: "He's taken to this like a fish to water. His team meetings have been exceptional. He's worked as a psychologist as well and I've been very impressed with him."
"I've just done what I believe in and what I've learned from experience over the years," McGinley stated.
"I've acted on instinct and I've been very, very fortunate in the captains I've played under."
Sam Torrance, captain for McGinley's Ryder Cup debut at The Belfry in 2002 when he was the match-winner, was given special mention.
"To be honest, most of the stuff I'm doing in captaincy I'm doing from Sam. I've learnt more than him than the rest. Not that the others were wrong, but the others did what Sam did. He was my first introduction to captaincy."
There was no forgetting either that the match honoured the career of Seve Ballesteros, too sick to travel after radiotherapy.
"We've talked a lot about Seve - I think we really played with his spirit," added McGinley.
Ballesteros did send a message to both teams. “I want to thank all my colleagues, the players, for the support and respect they have shown me over the years, and especially now,” he said.
“I wish I could have been there today, at Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, but I don’t have enough strength at the moment as my radiotherapy treatment finished last week, and I am suffering its consequences. I have followed the matches on TV and I was very happy to see competitive golf and great champions trying their best.
“I take this opportunity to congratulate Paul McGinley and his whole team for the victory in this year’s Seve Trophy, and I hope this experience helps all the players for the future. I also want to thank Thomas Björn and the whole Continental Europe Team for their tremendous effort.
“I want to end up this short note by thanking Vivendi for supporting this year’s Seve Trophy. I want to thank The European Tour, and all the French fans that went to watch the competition. Finally I want to thank all the people that are supporting me and sending me many messages of support, these really help me to keep going.”
Björn still believes that every one of his Continental Europe side is capable of making The Ryder Cup team next year.
"There's a lot of talent on our side - they just didn't get it done this week. There's nobody on my team that can't be in the next Ryder Cup team,” said the Dane.

BON ACCORD WIN DALSWINTON CUP

FOR FIRST TIME – ON TIE-BREAKER

Bon Accord won Deeside Golf Club’s invitation double foursomes club team tournament for the Dalswinton for the first time at the Bieldside course today (Sunday).
Barrie Edmond, Graham Somers, Matthew Greig and Jason Annand totalled 147 – the same as Nigg Bay.
Victory went on the tie-breaking rule of the team with the lowest round to Bon Accord whose Greig and Annand equalled the par of 71. Edmond and Somers combined for a 76.
For Nigg Bay, Ryan Forbes and Dean Yeats had a 73, and Gordon Grimmer and Nick Slater a 74.
Royal Aberdeen and Inchmarlo were only a shot behind in joint third place 148.
Last year’s title-winners, Newmachar, finished joint fifth with Murcar Links on 149.
*The Dalswinton Trophy, originally the property of the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club, was donated to Deeside Golf Club by one of its members, a Mr Kelman. There are various stories as to how it came into his possession. Rather than put in the "wrong one," we will leave it at that. But it was certainly a lucky day for Deeside when they were gifted what must rank as one of the most impressive trophies in Scottish golf.

Maruyama wins Panasonic Open - first in four years

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ASIAN TOUR
Kyoto , September 27: Japan ’s Daisuke Maruyama ended a four-year title drought with a four-stroke triumph at the Asia-Pacific Panasonic Open on Sunday.
Maruyama battled to a three-over-par 74 in tough conditions at the Joyo Country Club to beat China ’s Liang Wen-chong, Korea ’s Kim Kyung-tae and countryman Yuta Ikeda in the US$1.5 million event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour.
It was Maruyama’s first victory since the 2005 Fuji Sankei Classic and it also earned him an exemption into the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai in November which world number one Tiger Woods and Asia ’s first Major champion Yang Yong-eun will headline.
Holding an overnight four-shot lead, the 38-year-old was never really threatened by the chasing pack despite not shooting a single birdie on a day when pins were tucked in devilish spots and swirling winds threw players off course.
“I’d forgotten about the winning feeling. So this feels really good now,” said Maruyama. “I thought that if I could play the front nine in even par, I would win but then I went on to bogey the ninth hole.
“Looking back now, I think making those pars on 10, 11 and 12 were crucial as they are tough holes and it kept me in front. I didn’t feel at ease at all throughout the back nine until I reached the 18th green,” added Maruyama, whose winning total of eight-under-par 276 earned him a cheque of US$320,444 and a two-year’s exemption on the Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour.
Liang, Asia’s number one in 2007, settled for his career eighth top-three finish in Japan after closing with a 73. He briefly moved to within three shots of Maruyama with a birdie on nine but three bogeys over his next four holes derailed his title hopes.
“Again, the back nine was not good for me,” lamented the Chinese ace, who was seven- over-par on the back nine this week.
“After the birdie on nine, I thought I had a chance to make up ground on Daisuke but I bogeyed 10 and 12 which ended my chances. It was quite disappointing to bogey 10 as I only had 100 yards to the green but found the bunker and then missed my par putt from six feet. I also missed from a similar distance on 12 and by then it was over for me.”
The 23-year-old Kim, who won the Maekyung Open on the Asian Tour two years ago, shot a 74 to settle for his second straight tied second finish in Japan . Early bogeys on the third and fourth holes left him with an uphill battle and the Korean was then left to hang on to his overnight second position.
“At the start of the day, I thought I could have a chance but I bogeyed the third and fourth hole. After that, it was already over for me and I was just trying to hold on to my position. I failed to save par from eight feet on the third and then found the bunker at the fourth.
“The pins were really tough today and I only had look at birdies on three or four holes. I’m still happy with this result as I’ve been playing really well the past few weeks,” said Kim.
Japanese star Ryo Ishiakawa birdied his closing two holes for a 72 and finished in tied 16th position on 286.

Tom Pernice heading for debut win on

US over-50s professional tour

FROM THE US PGATOUR.COM WEBSITE
CARY, N.C. (AP) -- Tom Pernice junior moved into position to become the 15th player to win his Champions Tour debut, shooting his second, bogey-free, 5-under 67 to take a one-shot lead in the SAS Championship on Saturday.
Sandy Lyle had a 73 for 142 and joint 38th place.
"If you're playing good, it doesn't matter what tour you're on," said Pernice, a two-time winner on the PGA TOUR. "And everything's been pretty solid. All in all, I'm very thrilled."

Pernice is trying to become the third player this year to win in his debut on America's over-50s pro tour, following Tom Lehman, who teamed with Bernhard Langer in the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, and Senior PGA winner Michael Allen.
In the 2007 SAS, Mark Wiebe won his Tour debut. Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player also won in their first senior starts.
Dan Forsman and first-round co-leaders Denis Watson and Russ Cochran were tied for second at Prestonwood Country Club. Forsman shot a 68, and Watson and Cochran had 69s.
Cochran struggled with his iron play after birdieing the first two holes.
"I hit way too many weak iron shots," said Cochran, making only his 12th start on the Champions Tour. "But I got away with an awful lot. The good start on one and two helped because I had given it away by 10. From 11 on, I played pretty good."
Forsman and R.W. Eaks held a share of the lead late in the round until bogeys pushed them back. Forsman hit his tee shot on the 16th into the water but salvaged a bogey on the hole. He followed with a birdie on No. 17.
Eaks, who struggled with a back injury through much of the back nine, bogeyed the last hole for a 69, dropping him into a three-way tie for fifth with Nick Price (68) and Joey Sindelar (69), two strokes back at 8 under.
Fred Funk and Loren Roberts, who hold the top two spots in the Charles Schwab Cup points race, were tied for 29th at 3 under.
Pernice, who turned 50 this month, has struggled this year on the PGA TOUR, missing the cut in 11 of 22 events. He has one top-10 finish -- in the Bob Hope Classic hosted by Arnold Palmer in January.
"I think there's still something left in the tank to compete against the best," said Pernice, who still wants to play a full US Tour schedule next year.
But he also said he felt privileged to be among so many Hall of Famers at the SAS Championship.
"It's like a family out here," Pernice said of the Champions Tour. "The guys out here have been wonderful. It's a great experience to get such a warm welcome from the guys."

Willis set for first US Nationwide Tour victory

FROM THE GOLFWEEK.COM WEBSITE
Garrett Willis put himself in position for his first Nationwide Tour victory of the year, shooting a bogey-free 5-under 67 Saturday at the WNB Golf Classic at Midland (Texas) Country Club.
Willis stands at 5-under 200, two shots better than J.J. Killeen (66) and Brendan Steele (68).
“I wanted to come out here and make no bogeys,” said Willis. “I knew the guys coming out here early were going to go pretty low and I felt if I could make some birdies I could hang out around the lead.”
Willis, currently 19th on the Nationwide Tour money list, lost a playo-off in his first Nationwide event of the year, the Panama Digicel Championship. He also finished third at the South Georgia Classic in late April.
Willis, winner of the 2001 Touchstone Energy Tucson Open on the PGA Tour and the Nationwide’s 2005 Envirocare Utah Classic, missed only his second Nationwide cut of the year last week at the Albertsons Boise Open.
In six PGA Tour events this year, Willis has made the cut three times including a T-11 at the Valero Texas Open.
