TOUR SCHOOL REPORT, SCORES

Jamie Elson leads by one shot at Dundonald

By SARAH GWYNN, European Tour Press Officer.
The battle to be part of The European Tour in 2010 intensified as the First Qualifying Stage, Section A, of The European Tour Qualifying School reached the halfway stage.
Played over four venues, Chart Hills Golf Club in England, Dundonald Links in Scotland, the Lübker Golf Resort in Denmark and Ribagolfe in Portugal, the top players from each will make it through to the Second Stage in November before the Final Stage, where top 30 players players (plus ties) will win a coveted place on The 2010 European Tour International Schedule.
Dane Oliver Suhr still has a share of the lead at the Lübker Golf Resort despite posting a 74 in the second round to follow his first round 69. He and compatriot Lars Johansen are two ahead of Victor Almstrom of Sweden and another Dane, Thomas Norret. The 39 players at Lübker are playing for nine available Stage Two places.
In Portugal, where 12 places in Stage Two are up for grabs, Jurrian Van der Vaart fired a 69 to take a two shot lead over American John Poucher, with Spaniard Francisco Cea, whose 67 was the day’s best, and Johan Bjerhag of Sweden another shot back in joint third.
In Scotland, Jamie Elson shot a second successive 69 to lead by one shot at Dundonald Links, where 84 players are battling it out for 20 places at Second Stage.
South African Louis De Jager was a shot back at five under for the two rounds after scores of 69 and 70, while former Scottish amateur champion at match-play and stroke-play, Kevin McAlpine from Alyth, was at four under.
At Chart Hills Golf Club, where 21 places are available, Englishmen James Busby and Matthew Baldwin accelerated away from the chasing pack with rounds of 68 and 67 respectively.
Busby leads by one shot at nine under, with third place shared between four players at three under.

LETHAM GRANGE REPORT, SCORES

David Patrick two shots clear

at halfway in Scottish young

professionals' title race

David Patrick, a Lothians amateur team star in the 1990s and Walker Cup player at Nairn in 1999, has a two-stroke lead with two rounds to go in the Scottish Young Professionals championship at Letham Grange Hotel and Golf Resort, near Arbroath.
Patrick, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, playing out of the Elie club, has shot a pair of 70s over the testing par-73 lay-out for a six-under-par tally of 140.
To lead after running up a double bogey 7 at the sixth in his first round has been a pretty good effort by Patrick who cruised to the turn in his second round in three-under-par 34 with birdies at the long third and sixth and the short eight.
Then came a bit of a wobble with bogeys at the 12th and 13th but he went clear of the field again by covering the last five holes in two under par, thanks to birdies at the long 14th and short 15th.
Curiously enough, Dunbar's Neil Fenwick, two shots behind in second place on 142, also had a double bogey 7 at the sixth in his first round 70. He had birdies at the fourth, ninth, 14th and 15th in a second-round 72 but bogeys at the fifth, seventh and 16th allowed Patrick to finished with a clear lead.
Sharing third place on 143 are overnight leader James McGhee (Turnhouse) and Steven Duncan (Balbirnie Park). McGhee, who had led by four with an opening 66, had a nightmarish 77 in the second round. He opened with a double bogey 6 in an outward half of three-over-par 40 and a triple bogey 7 disaster at the 11th.
Duncan has had steadier rounds of 72 and 71, although, like Fenwick, he allowed Patrick to get away from him over the closing holes. Duncan bogeyed the 15th and 18th .
Defending champion Greg McBain (Royal Dornoch) moved up to a share of eighth place on 148 with a second-round 73 (39-34).

GRAHAM GORDON COMEBACK STARTS

WITH NE ALLIANCE WIN AT KEMNAY

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Former Scottish amateur champion Graham Gordon has set out on the comeback trail by winning the first North-east Alliance competition of the 2009-2010 season at Kemnay Golf Club today.
After playing in two events early in the year on the PGA EuroPro Tour and Challenge Tour, Gordon was so incapacitated by illness that he could hardly walk. Now, the former Walker Cup player and Newmachar member is going to get back into the card-and-pencil routine by playing on the Alliance circuit until the satellite tours restart next year.
Gordon headed a field of 80 at Kemnay with a one-over-par 72, highlighted by and eagle 3 at the 488yd 11th and birdies at the eighth and ninth in halves of 36 He would have got under par but for bogeys at the 16th and 18th.
The current Scottish amateur title-holder David Law (Hazlehead) needed only a par 3 at the last hole for a 71 which would have been a winning score. Unfortunately, he ran up a quadruple bogey 7, bizarrely landing in the same bunker TWICE as he criss-crossed the green in a comedy of errors.
Gordon won by a shot from Inchmarlo Golf Centre staff professional Ryan Fitzpatrick and Huntly amateur Stewart Pert. Fitzpatrick will be rueing an inward half of 39 after leading the field with 34 to the turn. Ryan had 6s at the 11th (bogey) and 13th (double bogey) and a 5 at the 16th.
+Apologies for the "old" picture of Graham Gordon above. We're on the case to get a more uptodate one!

QUALITY FIELDS

+Today's field included the 2009 Scottish boys' match-play champion (David Law), the 2009 Scottish men's amateur champion (David Law), the 2009 Scottish seniors match-play champion and Order of Merit winner (George Paterson), the 2009 Aberdeen Links champion (George Paterson), the 2003 Scottish men's amateur champion (Graham Gordon) and a 2003 Walker Cup player (Graham Gordon).

WHERE HAVE ALL THE PROS GONE?

+What the field did not have was anything like the number of professionals and assistant professionals who used to support the North-east Alliance week in, week out back the days when Chapper Thomson, Major Bill Graham and even when Bill Crichton was secretary. Where have they all gone? We'll come back to the subject, but if you have any ideas on how secretary Ron Menzies can persuade the pros to play, E-mail them to me at Colin@scottishgolfview.com
