Sergio Garcia blows a three-shot lead in

final round of Wyndham Championship

Ryan Moore claimed his first US PGA Tour win by beating Kevin Stadler with a birdie on the third hole of a sudden death play-off climax to the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club, Greensboro in North Carolina.
Stadler's second shot on the third play-off hole skipped off the back of the green. He chipped within 20 feet, but his putt drifted to the low side of the cup.
That cleared the way for Moore to make his putt, pick up $918,000 and 500 FedEx Cup points for winning the final tournament before the play-offs start later this week.
"This felt like an uphill battle," said Moore, who turned pro in 2005. "The whole time I've been on the PGA Tour, I just haven't been healthy, haven't felt like myself, and really kind of got some good momentum (finishing tied for 10th) at the U.S. Open, really feeling like myself again over the golf ball, and just kind of getting some confidence back in the putter and every aspect of the game. That's really carried through to this week."
Stadler, Moore and Jason Bohn forced the play-off after they were tied at 16-under 264 through 72 holes. Bohn was eliminated on the first play-off hole after he had trouble escaping the greenside bunker on No. 18 and his first try rolled back into the sand.
Sergio Garcia blew a three-stroke lead midway through the final round, shot a 70 and finished at 265. Michael Allen (68), Kevin Sutherland (66), Fred Couples (67), Brandt Snedeker (68) and Justin Rose (68) were at 266.
Moore and Stadler both bogeyed No. 18 in regulation.
Moore shot a 65 in the final round and had five consecutive birdies on Nos. 12-16 in moving to 17 under, then waited while Stadler finished his final-round 66 that included back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14 and 15.
Bohn -- who started the round seven strokes off the lead -- had a 62 that was the best round of the day. He followed birdies on seven of his first 14 holes with an eagle that pushed him to 16 under, grabbed the lead with a par on No. 16 and didn't miss a green until No. 17.
He had roughly an hour's wait -- a common theme at this rain-deluged tournament -- while Moore and Stadler finished their rounds.
"I wasn't even thinking I would get in a playoff," Bohn said.
Stadler was attempting to join his father -- 13-time PGA Tour winner Craig Stadler -- in winning in Greensboro. The elder Stadler cruised to a six-stroke victory in the Greater Greensboro Open in 1980.
The participants in the playoff had combined for one previous victory on Tour: Bohn's win in the 2005 B.C. Open.
Garcia could have joined them in sudden death, had he holed a 35-yard bunker shot on No. 18. His chip rolled within an inch of the cup.
"I wish I could blame it on that but, unfortunately, it happened before that," Garcia said.
Fittingly, a tournament that had trouble getting itself started seemingly didn't want to end, either.
Play stopped and started three times during the first three days due to lightning and heavy rains. The combined 9 hours in weather delays meant none of the first three rounds finished before sundown, forcing players to return to the Donald Ross-designed course at Sedgefield each morning to finish their rounds.
For a while, Garcia's eighth PGA Tour victory seemed a near-certainty. He started the final round sharing the lead with Chris Riley at 15 under before building his three-stroke lead midway through the round, moving to 18 under through seven holes after three consecutive birdies.
"When I was 3 under for the day, I still wasn't comfortable," Garcia said. "I felt like I was fighting myself."
Garcia has held at least a share of the 54-hole lead seven times in his career but has just two wins to show for it. He had three bogeys in a five-hole stretch between Nos. 8-12 to fall back.
"I knew I was three (strokes) back and needed to do something," Stadler said. "I thought I was just stuck in neutral and the next (leaderboard) I saw, I was only one back."
Stadler, Allen and Riley each picked up enough points to propel themselves off the bubble and into the playoffs, which begin later this week at The Barclays.
Allen arrived at No. 121 on the points list and improved to 101st, Riley entered at No. 129 and jumped to 119th while Stadler began four spots behind him but moved to 76th.

Hugh Hunter's Clackmannan County News

CALLUM AT GLENEAGLES THIS WEEK

Tulliallan’s Callum Macaulay had great start in the Dutch Open last week when he opened with a 4 under par 66. However his next three rounds were above par and he finished well down the field but still sixth best Scot with a four round aggregate of 282 (66,73,71,72).
It still earned him some Euros to keep him in the running for retaining his European Tour card for 2010.
Callum is closer to home this week when he competes in the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. Hopefully he will make at least the cut and not disappoint his local following who no doubt will be there to support him.
Dollar’s Scott Borrowman was also in action at the weekend in the North of Scotland open amateur stroke-play championship at Lossiemouth. Scott finished with a four round total of 294, leaving him in 19th equal position behind four-shot winner Kevin McAlpine
This weekend, Scott will be trying to retain his 2008 South-east District Open title at Dunbar. For the record, the 2007 event was won by Callum Macaulay. It would be quite an achievement for Clackmannanshire golfers to lift a trophy in a top class field from the home ground of Lothians golf two years in a row!

2009 COUNTY GOLF LEAGUES
The annual County leagues finished recently with Braehead taking the Senior League title and Tillicoultry taking the Junior League title.
In the senior league, all six Clubs compete, and the matches are keenly contested. Braehead and Alloa tied, and the title went to Braehead on match difference of 14 to Alloa’s 10. In their title win, Braehead won against Dollar, Tillicoultry and Tulliallan, halving with Alloa and losing to Alva.
Alloa also had similar results--- winning against Alva, Dollar and Tillicoultry, halving with Alloa and losing to Tulliallan.
The Alva team finished in third place.
In the Junior league, only four Clubs competed in 2009, the title going to Tillicoultry with 9 points from 6 matches ( 4 wins, 1 half and 1 loss). Runners up were the Alva Boys( who took the title in 2007 and 2008) with 7 points from their matches ( 3 wins, 1 half and 2 losses). Tillicoultry boys will go forward to the National Boys Team event to be held at Westerwood Golf Course near Cumbernauld in October. The Alloa Boys team finished in third place.

COUNTY AUTUMN MEETING
The County Golf Union managed to play the Autumn Meeting last weekend at Alloa Golf Club, although the course was wet from heavy rain the previous day. Best Scratch score was Darren Hulston (Dollar) with a 71. In division 1 Michael Robertson (Alva) took the best handicap prize with a net 68 and in Division 2 it was A Haggart (Alloa) with a net 67 who took the prize.

BY GEORGE! RODAKS CONTINUES IN

GOOD FORM AT NEWMACHAR

Moffat's George Rodaks, 60-year-old winner of last week's North of Scotland Seniors Open title, carried on at Newmachar Golf Club today in the Scottish senior men's amateur championship where he left off at Nairn Dunbar.
In the first of two qualifying rounds to produce 32 qualifiers for the match-play stages, George matched the par of 72 over the Dave Thomas-designed Hawkshill course.
The tree-lined fairways can cause problems to visitors, but his driving was equal to the accuracy test.
Clydebank-born Iain Stewart, entered from Curragh Golf Club, Co Kildare in Ireland and another who played well at Nairn Dunbar, shot a 73 for joint second place overnight with Edinburgh's Ian Taylor (Royal Burgess).
On the 74 mark are Scottish Senior Golfing Society captain Gordon MacDonald (Callander), the man who got the domestic circuit for over-55s off the ground last year, and Robert Jack (Liberton).
Bob Stewart (Tulliallan), winner of the Scottish senior open amateur stroke play title at Elgin last year - when he beat Iain Stewart in a play-off, is back on the 76 mark.
After the first qualifying round there are 31 players at 81 or better.

Perfect blend comes up trumps for Prestonfield

in Edinburgh inter-club tournament final

FROM THE EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS WEBSITE
By MARTIN DEMPSTER
Represented by a perfect blend of youth and experience, Prestonfield produced an outstanding performance to win the Edinburgh Inter-Club Tournament at the Merchants.
After knocking out Baberton, the defending champions in the semi-finals, the quartet of Alex McLean, Scott Johnston, Shaun Deegan and Blair Pelling beat Dalmahoy in the final to emerge as worthy winners."The club are really proud of the boys as they played some tremendous golf over the two days," said Prestonfield captain Neil McNaughton. "While we won the Inter-Club three times many years ago, this is the first time that we've got our name on the new trophy."
Prestonfield were comfortable 5 and 4 winners over Baberton in their semi-final, but Dalmahoy had to dig much deeper for a one-hole victory over the Merchants.
In a close match, both Dalmahoy pairings birdied the last, Robert Carson and Dougie Hunter finishing two up on John Archibald and Brian Erskine while Kevin Messer and Tom Blennerhasset ended up one down against Richard Craig and David Sibbald.
In the final, it was the top Prestonfield pairing of Johnston, 45, and Pelling, 17, that made the difference, the duo producing some sparkling golf as they finished six up on Hunter and Carson.
"They needed a 3 at the last to be round in 59 – and that included a double-bogey," noted Carson after watching his opponents reel off three birdies on the trot from the 15th to seal the win.
Behind, McLean, 49, and 19-year-old Deegan were never worse than three down and finished two down as they also played their part in the title triumph.
"I've been a member at Prestonfield for 37 years and this is the first team win I've been part of," beamed McLean.
For Pelling, though, the win completed a notable double, the youngster having joined forces with Grant Dalton, Duncan Johnston and Adam Elliot to win the Junior equivalent at Musselburgh last year.
Pelling has also just won the Lothians Boys' Order of Merit after coming out on top in a ding-dong battle for the title with Broomieknowe's Jamie McIntosh.
The two players were paired together for the final counting event – at Broomieknowe – and it was close all the way before Pelling eventually edged it with a 71 to a 72 from McIntosh.
"I got off to a flying start with wins at Winterfield, Liberton and Pumpherston and really performed quite consistently over the summer," said Pelling, who is coached by Colin Brooks through the SGU Academy programme.
He's off to St Andrews University next month to start a chemistry degree and is hoping to use his stay in the Home of Golf to good effect.
"It will be tough but I'm hoping to get on to the golf team and I'll certainly be making good use of the ticket that allows us to play on all seven of the courses at St Andrews," he added.
Meanwhile, the Edinburgh Summer League semi-finals will have to be re-arranged after they were washed out at Lothianburn yesterday.
All nine games in the first match – Kingsknowe v Swanston New – had teed off but, in addition to the 16th and 17th, the greens at the fourth and fourth were starting to flood and, with no sign of the rain stopping, organisers had no choice but to halt play.
"It was the right decision," said Kingsknowe team captain Bill Buchan. "I was up at the first green and there was no place to get relief there if you were putting and Allyn Dick, who was on the fifth hole, said it was pretty bad there as well."
The abandonment left League secretary Graeme Wallace making some phone calls today to try and fix up a new date, with this weekend being unlikely due to the fact the South-east District Open is being played at Dunbar.
One option could be to play the semi-finals and final as a 'double-header' on the one day, the title showdown being scheduled at the moment for Sunday, September 13.
"The four team captains got together and, as you could imagine, we all had our own opinions about what should happen," added Buchan. "What I'm sure we all want, though, is for all four teams to be at their strongest so that the best side comes out on top at the end of the season."

R&A underwrite new all-weather greens

for SGU and SLGA for winter practice

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
Scottish Golf has received close to £20,000 of support from The R&A to provide all-weather putting surfaces, including installing new outdoor greens in the north and south of the country to enhance its Academy coaching programme.
Based at eight different facilities around Scotland - Tower Wood (Dumfries), Mearns Castle (Renfrew), Brucefields (Stirling), Braid Hills (Edinburgh), St Andrews, Oldmeldrum (Aberdeenshire), Nairn Dunbar and Tain - chosen with the intention of minimising the amount of travel the selected players must undertake to attend coaching sessions, the SGU and SLGA Academies support around 80 players with each receiving 100 hours of coaching support per annum.
With the majority of coaching taking place over winter months a lack of quality putting surfaces during the winter had been identified as a major issue.
Consequently Scottish Golf has agreed, with full funding from The R&A, to enhance existing facilities, each of which has been individually assessed in close consultation with Scottish Golf’s preferred supplier Huxley Golf.
That will involve:
*Supplying a 8’ x 16’ modular green at each venue that can be used indoors and out which are large enough for a squad of six – the maximum number to be coached at any one time – to work on.
*Providing each Academy coach with 9 and 13 foot putting mats that can be rotated among the players for home use.
*Building 15’ x 25’ outdoor all weather putting greens at Tower Wood and Nairn Dunbar recognises these areas do not have such facilities currently available.

The facilities will not only be available for Academy and clubgolf programmes but also for any SGU or SLGA national squad member who requires access at no cost, as well as providing local golfers with facilities they would not otherwise have access to.
The SGU approached The R&A for funding to back the project which is costing a total of £19,430 and were delighted to be given their support for the full amount.
SGU CEO Hamish Grey said, "We are very grateful to receive this funding which further demonstrates The R&A's commitment to the development of golf in Scotland. The improved facilities will make a real difference to our Academies across Scotland enabling our players to practise meaningfully throughout their winter training programmes. They will play a vital part in our young golfers’ development.”
Director of Golf Development at The R&A, Duncan Weir commented, “Using money generated by The Open Championship, The R&A is delighted to support this new initiative which will benefit golfers all over Scotland. Twenty years ago it would have been fair to say practice facilities here in Scotland were generally poor but this situation has changed dramatically in recent times which must augur well for the future of our game.”

Renfrewshire held by Ayrshire boys at Eastwood

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION
By DON BREMNER
Any faint chance of Renfrewshire Golf Union winning this year’s West of Scotland Inter Counties Boys League disappeared at a wet and windy Eastwood where the Ayrshire boys were the visitors. The result was a 4-4 draw.
In the first game, Elderslie’s Alastair McDougall (14) had to face Scott Johnston, who had just won his club’s senior championship at age 15, and lost 3 and 2.
Then Andrew Cunningham from Ranfurly Castle evened the score with a comfortable 5 and 4 victory.
His clubmate, Josh Bogle then gave hope for a team victory winning 3 and 2 and the last of the Under-16s, Stewart Watt from Ranfurly Castle, had a fine one-hole victory over Ross Drain who had felt confident at the turn when he was five up. A miraculous turn around for Stewart.
In the 16 to 18 years games, neither Michael McLellan or Calum Gallacher could cope with their opposition and this left the match victory in the hands of Alex Ferguson (Paisley) and local boy, Lewis Cullen.
With home course advantage, Lewis was always in control and his 3 and 2 victory over Fraser Kerr meant that Renfrewshire could not lose the tie. However, full points were needed and a late surge by Ayrshire’s Sam Findlater saw a one hole lead held by Alex turn into a 2 and 1 loss. The points were shared and Renfrewshire will have to wait until next year.

Michael Sim's third Nationwide Tour win

this season puts him up to US PGA Tour

Aberdeen-born Michael Sim has gained instant promotion to the US PGA Tour by scoring his third win on the US Nationwide Tour this season in the inaugural Christmas in October Classic in Kansas.

The 24-year-old Sim, who emigrated with his parents from Aberdeen to Perth, Western Australia when he was seven, finished off a mistake-free weekend with a 4-under 67 to win the by two shots over Kentucky's Josh Teater.
Sim ended the week at 20-under 264, posting a rhythmic 65-67-65-67 pattern that included only two bogeys, one each on Thursday and Friday.
Michael Clark II posted an 8-under 63 to wind up third, four shots back. Blake Adams was fourth, five behind.
The victory will make Sim fully exempt on the US PGA Tour next year. He previously qualified with the "big boys" by being a top 20 money-winner on the Nationwide Tour but a stress fracture of the lower spine during the winter before he stepped up, severely handicapped his rookie season and he lost his playing rights after one season.
Now Michael is ready and probably better prepared to hold his own in the world's most lucrative pro golf circuit. He will immediately double the number of Scots-born players on the US PGA Tour - joining Martin Laird from Glasgow, who also used the Nationwide Tour money-winners' route reach the top.
For his latest win, Sim collected $112,500 to boost his earnings to $527,079 and break Troy Matteson's single-season Nationwide Tour record of $495,009 set in 2005.
Sim has eclipsed the record in just 12 starts and is averaging a whopping $43,923 for every week he tees it up.
"It's very relieving," said Sim, who collected his second win at the BMW Charity Pro-Am in mid-May. "I'd been in this position before and I wasn't able to get it done. I tried to stay in the moment as best I could. In Omaha I found it really difficult to stay focused on the last day. Fortunately I learned how to deal with those distractions. I did everything right today."
Sim, who shared the 54-hole lead at the Cox Classic in Omaha four weeks ago but tied for fifth, becomes the ninth player in Nationwide Tour history to earn the "battlefield promotion" to the US PGA Tour and the first to do so since Nick Flanagan two years ago.
Interestingly, Flanagan rooms in Arizona at Sim's house.
Sim, the former No. 1-ranked amateur in the world, began the final day at the Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate with a three-stroke leader over Teater, Tom Gillis and Steve Wheatcroft. Teater quickly got Sim's attention with four birdies on his first five holes. Sim made only one birdie to that point and the two were tied at 17 under after a handful of holes.
"It was nice to start the day with a three-shot lead but when Josh started rolling in those putts I knew I had to stay aggressive and keep firing at flags," said Sim, who would hit 12 of 14 fairways and 13 of 18 greens. "You can't ask for much more than that today. It was a good battle."
Sim and Teater went toe-to-toe for the next two hours. They each birdied the seventh, 11th and 12th holes and were knotted at 20-under when they reached the 363-yard, 15th hole. Teater's 3-wood went right, bounced off a cart path and wound up 40 yards from the fairway.
Teater had to take a penalty for an unplayable lie. His third shot from the high heather came up short and when he missed a 15-footer for bogey, Sim suddenly led by two.
"We had a good battle coming down the stretch. That tee shot on 15 is a bit awkward for me and I finally went with a hybrid," said Sim, who . "It was disappointing to see him hit it out there. He came unstuck and you hate to see that. He was playing such great golf up 'til then."
Teater's 6 and a following bogey at the par-3, 17th left Sim with a three-stroke lead and one hole to go.
"I really wasn't thinking about the third win at that point. I just asked my caddie what the lead was," said Sim, who promptly pushed his tee shot into the wispy grass down the right side of the 448-yard closing hole. "I just gave up on my tee shot."
Sim then cut a high 8-iron from 185 yards to the front left section of the green, leaving him 50 feet from the pin. Teater would stuff his second shot to within 10 feet and roll in the birdie, but Sim shut the door with two putts.
"I kind of lipped that second one in there," he said with a laugh. "I knew I still had a couple of putts for the win."
The victory puts Sim in a bit of a holding pattern. The US PGA Tour schedule begins an extended run for the play-offs and the FedExCup and Sim isn't eligible to play for at least the next five weeks.
"I might go home to Australia or I might just keep my schedule on the Nationwide Tour until it's time for me to play one on the big Tour," he said. "It's a good problem to have."
• Tiffany & Co., in conjunction with the Nationwide Tour, will recognize Michael Sim and his special achievement of securing a three-win promotion to the US PGA Tour with a special award in the near future.
