O'Neil goes off to British boys championship as

winner of Glasgow boys' stroke-play title

Glasgow Golf Club's Conor O'Neil won this week's Glasgow boys' championships in warm windy conditions at Williamwood Golf Club.
It was a Glasgow Golf Club 1-2 as David Gallacher (sixth in the recent Scottish boys' stroke-play) came second.
The top 16 players now move on to match-play. However O'Neil will be absent, as he is off to play in this coming week's British boys' open championship.

PGA EUROPRO TOUR REPORT

Clark holds off Keenan at Tudor Park

to win by three strokes

By ANTHONY LEAVER
Graham Clark started his journey back to the Challenge Tour with a comprehensive three stroke victory at The Virgin Atlantic 25th Anniversary Classic at Marriott Tudor Park in Kent.
The 2007 PGA EuroPro Tour Order of Merit champion had a tough time when he made the step up to the second tier of European golf in 2008, but after following opening rounds of 64 and 63 with a final round of 66 to claim a three shot win at 17 under ahead of Ian Keenan, the 33 year-old said he was ready to have another crack at the big time.
“It’s a real confidence boost to know that I can still get into the winner’s circle,” said the Doncaster GC man. “If I can get onto the Challenge Tour again I now know how I have to go about things so I will be playing the rest of the EuroPro Tour events and aiming for that top five.”
Clark held a two stroke lead at 13 under par going into the final round and extended that to three shots thanks to an eagle at the eighth. Both players birdied the tenth, but then Keenan birdied 11, bogeyed 12 and then birdied the 13th, where Clark dropped his first shot of the tournament to close the gap to just one stroke.
But Clark dug in and responded with a birdie at 14 and when Keenan dropped another shot at the 16th, Clark was ready to collect the £10,000 winner’s cheque.
“I carried on from the last two days really, not holing as many putts as the first two days put I’ve been hitting it really well recently,” said Clark, who climbs from 19th to third in the money list.
His playing partner and fellow 33 year-old collects £5,000 for his runners-up spot – something that he says will spur him on to go one better when the Tour moves to Wychwood Park in Crewe next week.
“I knew he’d be a tough opponent today and that getting past him would be hard, but that second place helps me,” said Keenan. “Obviously I need to get a win to really get up the rankings but hopefully that will come next week at Wychwood.”
“We had a good thing going out there – it was a lot of fun playing with Graeme,” said the man from Hoylake. “We were really going for it – going into the 14th I had the honour and I thought the tide might turn as I hit the fairway and it looked like he might drop a shot. But in the end, he made four, I made five and that was that really.”
Third place went to Elliot Saltman (Aegon) who recovered well from an up-and-down front nine to finish 12 under for the tournament. Saltman drove the green at the par four third and sank his putt for an eagle but then followed that with a double bogey at the fourth, and another bogey at the seventh seemed to have ended his chances of placing high. But on the back nine the Scot showed how destructive he can be with three birdies and an eagle in four holes from the 11th seeing him card a final round of 66.
Paul Dwyer (Clitheroe) led after the opening round and ended up in fourth spot at 11 under after also shooting 66, one stroke ahead of Nicky Harris (Whitefield GC) in fifth whose 67 meant he ended on ten under. Saltman’s playing partner Daniel Gaunt (Burhill GC) took sixth spot at nine under after a level par final round.
Steven Parry (Bolton) recorded the lowest round of the day to lead a group of seven players tied in seventh spot at eight under. Parry’s round of 63 meant he was the fourth player to equal the course record this week, although he missed a five-footer on the last for a 62.
Barry Hume carded a six under round of 64 to join Parry, with James Gill (New Zealand), Matthew Mills (Wentworth), Calvin O’Carroll (UNIFAB.co.uk), Simon Lilly (Wellingborough) and Martin Sell (Golf Analysis Ltd) completing the group.
The PGA EuroPro Tour moves to Wychwood Park in Crewe next week, with the ABC Solutions UK Championship beginning on Tuesday 11 August.

Jamie McLeary still on a roll in Finland

By GORDON SIMPSON of the European Tour Media Staff
Scotland’s Jamie McLeary sustained his hot streak of form in Finland today when he blitzed Linna Golf’s back nine in 32 shots to force his way into the frame for back to back wins on the European Challenge Tour.
McLeary, who closed with a 68 to win the Scottish Hydro Challenge at Aviemoreon Sunday, opened his account in the SK Golf Challenge with an identical score to sit two behind local hero Antti Ahokas and Welshman Rhys Davies after the first day.
The 28 year old moved from 57th to 11th on the Challenge Tour Rankings after that victory and now has his sights trained even higher after another high class performance.
“I would say that I played better today than at any time last week” he said. “The course is perfect – not a blade of grass out of place – but you get in trouble if you don’t play well off the tee. Fortunately that was one of the strengths of my game. I actually hit 13 out of 14 fairways and that helped me construct a decent round.”
Winning €32,000 in his native Scotland has helped the McLeary budget enormously for the remainder of the season. He added: “That win took so much pressure off me. In the past I worried about making the cut and looking after every penny, but I arrived this week feeling that I am playing to win, not just to hang around for the weekend.”
Andrew McArthur, currently 30th on the Rankings, opened up with a solid 70 and admitted: “It was a steady rather than spectacular round. I was going along nicely on Sunday before taking a ten in the last round in Aviemore but I’ve managed to put that behind me.
“Hopefully I can get closer this week and work towards me aim of being in the top ten in the Rankings at the end of the year.”
Fellow Scots Peter Whiteford and Raymond Russell both carded one under par 71s.

ENGLAND WIN 2009 BOYS HOME

INTERNATIONALS IN FINE STYLE

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ROYAL & ANCIENT GOLF CLUB
England have won the 2009 Boys Home Internationals, defeating Ireland 12 – 3 on the final day of the event under threatening skies at Hankley Common Golf Club. They have now won ten of the 14 Boys Home Internationals staged since the event was changed to its present format in 1996.
Taking a 4 – 1 lead into the singles, England looked favourite to go on and win the title. And they continued that form into the afternoon, ensuring victory by winning the first seven matches reasonably comfortably with only one tie going all the way to the final hole.
The standard of play on show by the English team today was aptly demonstrated by the English Boys Amateur champion, Tom Lewis, who finished off his 6&4 win with two consecutive eagles at the par-5 13th and par-4 14th. “As I was walking down the 14th I called it myself, actually,” said Lewis. “I was thinking, “I do feel like I can hole it here and win 6&4.””
“We got off to a bit of a slow start this week to be honest with you,” explained England captain, Brian Roake. But we just played to our full potential today. The boys knew what they had to do. I told them to concentrate on winning points for themselves, and if they made points for themselves the overall score would look after itself.”
But Roake was quick to cite Jonathan Bell’s excellent birdie putt on the 18th green in the final foursomes match of the morning as being the catalyst for success later in the day.
“It could have been 3 -2. It’s a difference of two points isn’t it? It makes a little bit of a buffer. They [Jonathan Bell and James Webber] were three down with six to play and then had four birdies to win one up.
Bell, too, had realised the significance of the putt: “We said for a laugh that we’d win five on the spin to win 2&1 but we ended up having a putt on the last to win and somehow it went in! I knew it was important,” he said. “It gave us confidence going into the afternoon knowing that we had that three point cushion.”
“It’s been absolutely fantastic,” added Roake. “At Hankley Common what you need to do is keep the ball on the fairway. Today they did, and they holed a few putts. It was a great performance.”
In the second match of the day Scotland recorded their first victory of the week with an 11 – 4 triumph over Wales. Recently crowned Scottish Amateur Match Play champion, David Law, earned his fifth point out of a possible six this afternoon, helping the Scots to a well-deserved win.
He, along with many of this week’s players will now travel to Royal St George’s Golf Club, Kent, to compete against the likes of Open Championship Silver Medalist, Matteo Manassero, at the Boys Amateur Championship.

Mansell finds Prestwick a tough

drive in the windy conditions

FROM THE SCOTSMAN SPORTSWEBSITE
By NICK RODGER
Nigel Mansell, the former Formula 1 world champion, was given a tough introduction to the old links of Prestwick yesterday in the first round of the Senior Open Amateur championship.
While Canadian Graham Cooke harnessed the testing, windy conditions and posted a battling one-under 71 to set the early pace, Mansell, making his debut in the over-55s amateur major, emerged with a 12-over 84.
The 1992 F1 champion, who won 31 grand prix during his career, has only managed 12 rounds of golf in the past three years due to various commitments and admitted he was simply happy to be involved in the cut-and-thrust of competitive action again. “This was a tough re-introduction to the game but it was great,” said one-handicapper Mansell, who played in the 1988 Australian Open.
“The conditions made it very difficult. I was hitting a seven-iron 100 yards into the wind and that took a bit of getting used to mentally. Prestwick is a course where you need a bit of local knowledge. I need to learn to put the brakes on at some of these holes as I was flying through the greens and getting myself into trouble.”
Early pacesetter Cooke, a three-times Canadian Seniors champion, has finished second and third in the British event over the past two years and the 62-year-old set himself up for another assault on the title with a tidy round highlighted by two birdies on his closing three holes.
Bermuda-based Robert Vallis, fifth in the Scottish Seniors Open at Panmure earlier this season, opened with a 73 while Berkshire’s David Lane, the British champion at nearby Western Gailes in 1998 and the winner of this year’s Scottish event, carded a 78.
He was joined on that mark by Glasgow debutant Peter Jamieson. Defending champion Paul Simson shot an 80.

Law and White new caps in Scotland team

for men's home internationals at Southport

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
Allied Surveyors Scottish Amateur Champion David Law and Lundin’s James White will be rewarded for this season’s performances when they receive their first full Scotland caps in the forthcoming Home Internationals at Hillside Golf Club in Southport (26-28 August).
At just 18 years old, Law propelled himself into the record books by defeating Paul O’Hara in the final which went to extra holes at Royal Troon’s Open Championship Course, to become the first golfer to win both the national boys and men’s match play titles in the same season.
Following that sensational performance the newly crowned national champion has fully justified his call up to the Scotland Men’s team, sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management. Former Scottish Boys Champion James White also brings good form into the team and is currently ranked third in the SGU Order of Merit following a number of top finishes this season, including making it to the fifth round of the Scottish Amateur Championship.
They are accompanied by all six of the team who triumphed at last month’s European Team Championship at Conwy in Wales.
Gavin Dear and Wallace Booth, the current World Champions who will represent GB&I hopes at the Walker Cup later this year, will make their third appearance at the Home Internationals. Their fellow Perthshire team mate Glenn Campbell also brings a wealth of experience to the team, having been a member of the winning side in 2005 and 2006, he will be playing in his seventh Home Internationals series. Last year’s Scottish Boys Champion Michael Stewart and Ross Kellett have also retained their places, along with the final member of the European team, SGU Order of Merit Leader Paul O’Hara.
Like O’Hara, Keir McNicoll’s inclusion in the team will mark his fourth experience of playing in the quadrangular event as the home unions battle for the Raymond Trophy. Last year’s SGU Order of Merit winner Steven McEwan and James Byrne complete the 11 strong side, with Byrne representing the third change to last year’s line up having made his debut in the event in 2007.
Ireland, who claimed the Home Internatonals hat-trick at boys', men's and senior level last year, are aiming to retain their title, whilst England who last won the title in 2007 will attempt to make the very most of home advantage.

Scotland Team:

Wallace Booth (Comrie)
James Byrne (Banchory)
Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie)
Gavin Dear (Murrayshall)
Ross Kellett (Colville Park)
David Law (Hazlehead)

Wallace Booth Triumphs in Dollar Shoot-out

Wallace Booth triumphed in Dollar Golf Club’s Eagle and Birdie Challenge with an astonishing 22 under par total over three rounds. The event was part of the club’s “Drive to Survive” fundraising programme and featured a novel 3 rounds in one day format.
All the players entered into the spirit of the competition by “going for everything” on the day. This probably caused a few scoring hiccups as safety first was definitely not on the players minds. The Walker Cup duo of Wallace Booth and Gavin Dear dominated the day – exchanging birdies and the odd eagle in an exciting duel. With only one stroke in and three holes to play a close finish was on the cards. However Gavin came unstuck on the 16th when his effort to hit the tight 296 yard, par 4 16th off the tee ended up in impenetrable rough and he ran up a high number.

This left Wallace out on his own and he finished the third round with an astonishing 58. “That’s the lowest I’ve ever scored” said Wallace “and the whole day was tiring but great fun”. The home club’s Scott Borrowman produced a creditable 17 birdies but the odd wayward drive kept him and Gordon Yates off the pace. The pair finished 3rd and 4th respectively.

Collectively the players finished an impressive 46 under par and accumulated 73 birdies and 5 eagles – ensuring that the healthy crowd enjoyed a really exciting day’s golf. Tour Pro Callum Macaulay added to the fun with a “Beat the Pro” challenge taken up by many spectators – a few of whom walked away with a cherished “I beat the Pro” certificate.

Dollar’s finance convener Dugdale Bradley commented “This has been a great day for the club. I’d like to thank all the players and the SGU for their help in creating this unique event. We’ve got our fundraising campaign off to an excellent start. Even more encouraging for us we are now picking up new members and social members again. Special rates are still available to new members and if anyone wants to join our friendly club you will be made most welcome”.

CRAIG LEE WINS DEER PARK MASTERS

By NICK RODGER
Craig Lee strengthened his position at the top of the Tartan Tour's Order of Merit with victory in the Muir Deer Park Masters at Livingston.
The former European Tour player, who won May's Northern Open, signed off with a five-under-par 67 for a nine-under 135 and won by three shots from Hayston's Stephen Gray.
One stroke off the pace overnight, Lee made his move to the front with a four-under outward half and could even afford the luxury of a bogey on the 18th as he pocketed the first prize of £2,772 to take his earnings for the season on the domestic circuit to almost £20,000.
Gray closed with a best-of-the-day 66 to grab second spot on 138 while first round leader Robert Arnott posted a 72 for 139 and shared third with former Scottish PGA champions, Colin Gillies and Greig Hutcheon.
In the team event, Scottish champion David Orr led the Valad Group amateurs of David Lawrence, David Gardiner and Harry Phillips to victory with a 56.
