Knox joint ninth with one round to go in Hooters' event

Russell Knox goes into Sunday's final round of the Hooters Tour event, the Buffalo Run Casino Classic at Peoria Ridger Golf Club, Miami in Oklahoma with six shots to make up on leader Martin Flores from Texas.
The Inverness exile is in joint ninth place after rounds of 68, 70 and 69 for a nine-under-par 207 total.
The scoring is so "hot" on this satellite tour that you have to be double figures under par to have a chance of winning the standard $10,000 first prize.
Floes has shot 70, 65 and 66 for 15-uneder-par 201.
He leads by one shot from five players on 202.

Wind and rain for second round of US Open

Lee Westwood climbs into top 10 as

Harrington, Casey, Donald miss cut

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Lee Westwood defied the rain and a bad draw to climb into the top 10 at the US Open today as US PGA Tour rookie Ricky Barnes took the one-shot halfway lead at Bethpage Black - and Tiger Woods made the cut.
There was less luck for a sizeable section of the European contingent as Padraig Harrington, Paul Casey, Luke Donald and Justin Rose were among those sent packing with the cut line established at four over par.
Westwood, starting the day at two over par, shot a four-under-par 66 for his second round in the worst conditions of the day as rain poured constantly through the afternoon on Long Island.
He joins fellow Englishman Ross Fisher at two under par 138 for the tournament, six shots back on Barnes who earlier in the day carded a five-under-par second-round 65 in the best of the conditions playing back-to-back rounds yesterday and this morning.
"I just went out with the idea of trying to be in front on my side of the draw," Westwood said.
"I've managed to do that so I'm delighted."
Barnes, the 2002 US Amateur champion who earned his tour card this year after six years as a professional, leads at eight under, his 132 the lowest 36-hole total in US Open history.
It puts him one ahead of Friday leader Lucas Glover, who posted a six-under-par 64, and another shot in front of first-round leader Mike Weir, the left-handed 2003 Masters champion from Canada who added a 70 to his opening 64.
Those three were set to get the third round way in a group of three with the lower half of the leaderboard playing from the 10th.
Aberdeen-born Australian Michael Sim will start the third round in joint 24th place on 141, the same mark as Graeme McDowell from Northern Ireland.

72-HOLE TENNANT CUP THIS WEEKEND

James Byrne leads by one
shot at halfway stage

Banchory's James Byrne leads at the halfway stage of the Tennant Cup after rounds of 73 and 68 for a one-under-par total of 141 at Glasgow Gailes, Ayrshire.
The 20-year-old, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, one of only two Scots to reach the last 16 of the British amateur championship at Formby this past week, leads by one shot from the first-round leader Greg Paterson (St Andrews New) and last year's SGU Order of Merit winner, Steven McEwan (Caprington).
Paterson did not cope as well with the blustery conditions in the afternoon as he had done with a splendid four-under-par round of 67 in the first round. He had four successive 3s in that round, including an eagle and two birdies.
But his second-round 75 was more humdrum and leaves him alongside McEwan, who had a pair of 71s for 142 as they bid to overhaul Byrne, a student at Arizona State University, over Sunday's final two rounds at Glasgow Golf Club's other course - the parkland Killermont.
Gavin Dear (Murrayshall), Scotland's top player in the R&A World Amateur Rankings, looked poised to challenge after a morning 70 but he couold do no better than a 75 in the afternoon, the same pattern of scoring as that of former Scottish match-play champion, Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie).
The leading 40 and ties on 155 and better qualified for the final two rounds.

Golf Dat Lab Scottish youths championship

Carnoustie's Cappi goes three strokes

clear with two rounds to go at Renfrew

Angus Cappi, whose home course – Carnoustie – is one of the toughest around, must find it slightly easier to play Renfrew, venue for this weekend’s Golf Data Lab Scottish youths championship.
Cappi shows three shots ahead of the big field with Sunday’s final two rounds to come with a couple of steady rounds of 72 and 71 for one-under-par 143.
Cappi departed from par only three times in today’s (Sat) second round – a bogey at the eighth, a birdie at the ninth and a birdie at the 17th in halves of 36 and 35.
First-round leader Scott Crighton from Dalgety Bay, a member of Aberdour GolfClub, has slipped back into a five-way tie for second place on 146.
Crighton, who has completed three years as a golf scholarship student and highly-rated academic at the University of Western New Mexico, followed up his Friday 70 with a 76 in which four shots where shed to par over the last three holes.
After going out in 35, Crichton had double bogey 6s at the 16th and 18th.
Peter Scanlan (Hamilton), also had double bogey 6s, but at the first and eighth in his second-round 75 for 146.
The 43 qualifiers for the final day had to shoot eight-over-par 152 or better to beat the cut.
Former title-holders Fran Pintor Smith from Spain (153) and defending champion David Booth (Stirling University & Rotherham) (162) failed to make it.

Woosnam, Smit and Bruner tied

for lead in Wales Seniors Open

From Steve Todd, European Senior Tour Press Officer
Ian Woosnam is ideally placed for a popular home victory in the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open after firing a superb 67 to surge through the field and into a three-way share of the lead with American Jerry Bruner and South African Bertus Smit.
The 2006 Ryder Cup-winning Captain, who made up six shots on the final day to win Irish Seniors Open two weeks ago, began the second round adrift of overnight leader Bob Cameron by the same margin after a first round 75.
However, a flawless back nine of 32, which consisted of four birdies – one coming after chipping in from 30 yards on the par-4 13th hole – and just 10 putts saw the 1991 Masters Tournament winner surge up the leaderboard to finish on two under par 142 at Royal Porthcawl.
It means Woosnam will start in the final group for the second year running in the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open and the 51 year old Welshman is determined to go one better than last year, when he finished runner up to Peter Mitchell.
“I’ve just got to keep it in the fairways and battle hard – that’s what I did today,” he said. “It’s great to be in the last group tomorrow again. I’m looking forward to it.
“It would be great to win on home soil. I’ve won twice at St Pierre (British Masters in 1983 and the Epson Grand Prix in 1990) so it would be nice to do it again. I came close last year so I’ll see if I can pull it off tomorrow.
“I basically got off to a good start today with a birdie on the first and then played defensively and took two bogeys on the next two holes,” he added. “I just scrambled around pretty well for the first nine in one under par and then on the back nine I didn’t do too much different but I had 10 putts. That’s what you have to do in these conditions
.“When I had an opportunity to make a birdie, I made a birdie. When I needed to get it up and down, I got it up and down. It was a great chip in on 13. I hit some nice shots from the eighth onwards after that I hit some bunkers but I managed to chip and putt well.”
In contrast, Smit’s round was built on a fine front nine where he recovered from a bogey on the second with four birdies in a row from the third hole to go out in 32 before eventually signing for a 68.
With the South African rugby team also defeating the British Lions, Smit heads into Sunday’s final round hoping to make it a double cause for celebration and he admitted he was looking forward to playing alongside the former World No 1 for the first time.
“It will be fun but a little bit nerve racking because I haven’t played with Woosie yet,” said the 56 year old. “The first time I played with Sam Torrance was similar but I did quite well then, although Woosie is on quite a run.”
Bruner posted five birdies en route to a round of 70 and the 5ft 6in Los Angeles-based player is hoping he can capture his third Senior Tour title and first victory since the 2005 Algarve Seniors Open of Portugal.
“It will be nice going out with Woosie – two little guys, or three in fact as Bertus isn’t that big!” he said. “I always say Woosie is the only guy on Tour I’m taller than! I like playing with him. As long as I keep my head right, I’ve got a good chance tomorrow.”
Ireland’s Des Smyth, an assistant captain to Woosnam in the Ryder Cup at the K Club two years ago, is one stroke behind the leaders on one under par after a 69, as is Australian David Merriman following a 70.

GREG PATERSON’S PURPLE PATCH TAKES

PUTS HIM THREE CLEAR IN TENNANT CUP

Greg Paterson (St Andrews New) strung together four 3s in a four-under-par run from the 12th to the 15th to take a three-stroke lead at the end of the first round of the 72-hole Tennant Cup SGU Order of Merit event at Glasgow Gailes links course, Ayrshire today (Saturday).
Paterson, with the help of a freshening wind, sailed home in five-under-par 30, highlighted by his purple patch of a par 3 at the short 12th, a birdie 3 at the 13th, an eagle 3 at the 14th, and a birdie 3 at the 15th.
He led by two shots from Murrayshall’s Gavin Dear from Scone, and Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie).
Dear, winner of the Irish open amateur stroke-play earlier this season, covered the inward half in 32 while former Scottish match-play champion Campbell birdied the 17th and 18th for an inward half of 33.
Sharing fourth place on par 71 were Steven McEwan (Caprington), Barry Brooks (Meldrum House) and Fraser Fotheringham (Nairn).
Gordon Stevenson (Whitecraigs) and Fraser McKenna (Balmore) came next on 72.

Matteo (16) becomes youngest ever

winner of Amateur championship

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE R&A
Sixteen-year-old Matteo Manassero has won the 2009 Amateur Championship after beating England’s Sam Hutsby 4 & 3 in today’s 36-hole final which was watched by over 1000 spectators at the Formby Golf Club links in Lancashire
The Italian becomes the youngest player to win the Amateur Championship at 16 years and two months (62 days), easily surpassing the previous record of 18 years and one month. He also becomes the first Italian to win the Championship in its 124-year history and only the third man to win the title having led the stroke play qualifying.
“I never imagined once that I could win this tournament; I’m shocked. It’s unbelievable!” said Manassero from Verona, who finished 19th at last month’s Italian Open. “I think everyone in Italy knows about it already, and I hope it helps with amateur golf there. To be the first Italian, wow, that is something very special.”
Manassero will now accept invitations to both The Open Championship this July, and next April’s Masters Tournament. And he’ll go to Turnberry with the advantage of having played the Ailsa course at last year’s Amateur Championship.
The final saw Manassero continue the form which had seen him progress through all rounds with relative ease, only once being behind in any of his five previous matches. Today, the pair reached the 16th tee all square after a tight opening, but an untidy bogey from Hutsby and two birdies from Manassero over the final holes of the morning gave the Italian a three-hole lead at the half-way stage.
He would build on that lead going into the afternoon, reaching the 25th hole 6-up courtesy of a pair of birdies and some loose shots from Hutsby. And though the Englishman fought back well, producing two consecutive birdies of his own at the 31st and 32nd to reduce the deficit to four holes, the Italian always looked comfortable, eventually sealing victory on the 33rd with a three-foot putt.
“I didn’t sleep much last night, thinking about what this would mean,” said runner-up, Hutsby. “The three holes at the end of the first round really cost me, and I couldn’t get my putter going.”
Manassero will play at The Open Championship at Turnberry, being held from the 12 – 19 July 2009.
The 2010 Amateur Championship will be hosted by Muirfield and North Berwick on the 14 – 19 June.
Manassero was three up after the first 18 holes (scroll down for details of the morning round).

Hole 21: Manassero won. Manassero 4 up.
Hole 23: Manassero won. Manassero 5 up.
Hole 25: Manassero won. Manassero 6 up.
Hole 26: Hutsby won. Manassero 5 up.
Hole 30: Manassero won. Manassero 6 up.
Hole 31: Hutsby won. Manassero 5 up.
Hole 32: Hutsby won. Manassero 4 up.
Hole 33: Hole halved. Manassero wins by 4 and 3.

Enter the Braemar Open on July 4

- and enjoy the mountain scenery

The Braemar Golf Club 36-hole open, one of most popular summer two-round tournaments in the North-east for many years, is in danger of being axed from the golfing calendar because of a steady, annual fall-off in entries.
It is a counting event in the North-east District order of merit but attracted only 40 entries last year.
This year's event is heading for an even lower figure which would spell the death knell of a once popular tournament. It might even be cancelled unless there is a sharp upsurge.
The date of the tournament this year is Saturday, July 4.
Entries will be accepted on 013397 41595.
The magnificent mountain scenery at one of the highest above sea level courses in Britain is a bonus when you play golf at Braemar.

George Paterson (57) one of oldest Aberdeen

Links championship winners on record

George Paterson, 57-year-old Northern Golf Club member, became one of the oldest winners of the Aberdeen Links championship last night when he beat the favourite and former runner-up, Barrie Edmond (Bon Accord) by 2 and 1 in the 18-hole final.
Paterson is a former consultant in the oil industry and has become a full-time amateur golfer since he took early retirement.
Paterson was four under par for the holes played - excellent scoring in a final when the pressure is on.
The turning point of the match came after a bogey by Paterson enabled Edmond to square the match at the 10th.
George, a regular competitor through the winter on the North-east Alliance circuit, birdied the 11th, 12th and 13th, winning two of them, to go into a decisive two-hole lead.
"I played in the 1995 final against Donald Jamieson and he beat me. After that I didn't play here at the Links again until two years ago when I joined the Northern club again," said Paterson.
"At 57 I must be one of the oldest winners of the Links championship and I can't stress enough how happy I am to have won.
"Barrie was the favourite and he hits the ball colossal distances but I managed to get a few putts in early to put him under pressure and fortunately for me Barrie is having to suffer again. I feel for him as he is a great player."
Edmond was also beaten finalist in the Links championship in 2003.

Would you believe it? Two holes in one in same round

Double ace day for Monaghan's Tommy Docherty

FROM THE BELFAST TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
A golfer has beaten odds of 67 million to one by scoring two holes-in-one in the same round.
Monaghan golfer Tommy Doherty, who plays off a handicap of 18, was stunned and delighted when he holed out in a single shot at the par-three fourth and par-three sixth holes at the Nuremore Golf Club in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan.
Unfortunately, the achievement came in a friendly round with playing partner Mal McLeod from Dublin, so it didn't count towards a competition score.
The excitement of the round started when Tommy (28) struck a six-iron tee shot at the 139-metre fourth hole. The ball bounced three times and then dropped into the cup.
"The first one was amazing, but nothing prepared us for what was to follow," said Tommy.
At the sixth hole, Tommy stepped up and struck the ball with a five wood towards the pin 169m away. It bounced on the green and rolled uphill past the pin, stopped, and then started to roll backwards. Then it disappeared.
Both players made for the green and Mal walked over to the pin.
"Mal looked into the hole and then he just put his head in his hands. He said: 'I don't believe it. You've holed it again, Tommy. You've got a second hole-in-one'," said Tommy. "I just could not believe it."

It's still a Recession ... Nationwide!

Don't try telling the US Nationwide Tour top brass that we are past the worst of the Recession. They have just had to slash almost half the prize fund for next week's Players Cup because of lack of sponsorship.
"Only" $600,000 will be up for grabs, down from the anticipated $1,000,000+.
No tour in America is escaping the Credit Crunch. The LPGA Tour has had to cancel tournaments altogehter while, on the US PGA Tour, last week's St. Jude Classic lowered its purse from $6.1 million to $5.6 million because Stanford Financial pulled out as the title sponsor.
No tournament on the Nationwide Tour had a higher pay-out than the Players Cup in West Virginia.
"We all recognize the economy has had a negative effect on golf sponsorships, and nowhere has it had more impact than the Nationwide Tour Players Cup with its coal industry-related sponsor base," Nationwide Tour president Bill Calfee said in a statement. "I am pleased to confirm that this event will be played as scheduled, however, we have been forced to make the difficult decision of reducing the purse."
The Players Cup has had one of the strongest fields on the Nationwide Tour. Last year Rick Price won the event in a playoff to earn his PGA Tour card. He also collected $180,000, which remains tied for the richest paycheck in the tour's 20-year history.
Aberdeen-born Australian Michael Sim is the leading money-winner on the Nationwide Tour this season. With two wins already under his belt, he needs one more to gain automatic and immediate promotion to the US PGA Tour.
