The stories behind the scorelines ...

Bon-Accord's top two players turned on the style in tonight's semi-finals. Matthew Greig can count himself unlucky to be beaten with four-under-par figures. However, he came up against a superb display of ball-striking and putting from Barrie Edmond who grabbed six birdies and no bogeys in the 17 holes played.
Pars were traded at the first three holes and birdies were exchanged at the fourth. Edmond parred the fifth to move one ahead, only for Greig to level at the eighth with a birdie.
The ninth was halved in birdies, leaving Edmond one up at the turn. Birdies were traded at 11, 12 and 13 for Edmond to go two up.
A half in birdies at 15 and two pars were enough for Edmond to squeeze through 2 & 1.
In the other semi-final, George Paterson came through by the same margin in a tight affair. Mullen won the second with a par 4, only to lose the next two holes to a par and a birdie. He squared it at the fifth with a birdie 3 but fell behind again when Paterson birdied the eighth.
Pars at 11 and 14 put Paterson three up but Mullen birdied 15 to reduce the deficit.
Pars at 16 and 17 closed out the match for Paterson.
In the Handicap semi-finals, Norman "Nodge" Gray came through a scrappy encounter against Alan Divers at the last hole. Holes were exchanged at the fourth and sixth for them to turn all square.
Divers won 11 and 12 to move two up but Gray squared the match with wins at 13 and 15. All square standing on the last tee, Divers found the ditch and could not get up and down, leaving Gray to hole a six-footer for victory.
In the other semi-final, Willie West put in a display worthy of the scratch competition with six-under-par figures in defeating Jeff Kilman.
West birdied 5, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 14 to oust Jeff whose one-under-par figures would have won most games.
The Murray Cup final will be an all-Caley affair after wins by Richie Davidson and Graeme Mackie against Stuart Kennedy and Gary Milne respectively.
Davidson posted a devastating run of figures to beat Kennedy 5 & 4 whilst Mackie edged out Milne by 2 & 1 after Milne had broken his putter on the 13th and was forced to putt with a rescue club.

Manassero (16) sets course record of

65 at West Lancashire in 'Amateur'

FROM THE R&A WEBSITE
Thanks to a fantastic score of 65, seven under-par, Italy’s Matteo Manassero finds himself at the top of the leaderboard after day one of the 2009 Amateur Championship. The 16-year-old from Verona registered seven birdies and one eagle to set a course record at West Lancashire Golf Club this afternoon.
Currently ranked 46th in the world, Manassero won the Palla D’Oro Memorial Silva before finishing a respectable tied 11th at the St Andrews Links Trophy later in the same week. Today, two chip-ins and a three 2s helped Manassero on his way, and having come to the Championship with the ambition of making the cut, he now looks likely to qualify for the match-play stages.
“It was a fantastic round,” said the young Italian, “everything went my way. And to be leading The Amateur Championship after the first round is great!”
One stroke behind Manassero is Australia’s Matt Jager, who posted an exceptional round of 66 at Formby Golf Club. The current world No 13 carded five birdies and an eagle over the Sefton Links to take the early lead at six under-par.
During a three-week visit to the UK, his first, Jager has competed at the St Andrews Links Trophy and the Scottish stroke-play championship at Murcar Links, where he finished in 19th position.
And he was pleased that his mature approach to links golf, demonstrated by an eagle at the par-5 17th having reached the green with two four-irons, paid dividends.
“I’m delighted with the way I played,” he said after setting a course record. "I tried to avoid all the traps and just managed my game well.”
Back at West Lancs, Nigel Edwards managed a five under-par 67, which he achieved during the most testing conditions of the day. The round, which included six birdies and eagle at 16, leaves the four-time Walker Cup player only two strokes off the pace.
“Position in the fairway was key today,” explained the Welshman. “There’s no control out of the rough so you have to keep it in play.”
Last year’s champion, Reinier Saxton, has made a solid start to his title defence, opening with a 70 at Formby. The Dutchman is enjoying some decent form of late and is glad to be in the north-west of England to contest The Amateur.
“I had a few nerves on the first tee! But I’m very happy to be playing in this championship," he explained.
"It's nice to be here to defend my title."
Five players follow the top three after carding 68s. At Formby, Daan Huizing of the Netherlands, Sam Hutsby of England and Sweden’s Jesper Kennegard put themselves in strong positions, while at West Lancs, Germany’s Stephan Jager and Canadian, David Markle, achieved the same total.
Day-one also had a hole-in-one. Austria's Lucas Nemecz holing a seven-iron from 158 yards at the West Lancs' third hole.

David Orr scores second win in

Ayrshire despite Prestwick rain

East Renfrewshire's tour professional golfer-cum-Glasgow taxi driver David Orr has put the "wheels" on his Tartan Tour season with two victories with seven days.
Last Tuesday he won the £1,029 top prize in the Ayr Belleisle pro-am and today, again in Ayrshire, David, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, collected the £540 main award in the rain-hit Linksland at Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club 18-hole competition for Young Professionals.
Play was held up at the Ayrshire venue for three hours because of torrential downpour but that didn't affect Orr's concentration. He won by three strokes with a five-under-par round of 64, birdieing the third, sixth, ninth, 11th, 15th and 18th in halves of 32. The only blemish on his scorecard was a bogey at the 227yd par-3 17th.
Runners-up on 67 were Neil Fenwick (Dunbar) and Mark Finlayson (Edzell).
By a curious coincidence or perhaps it reflected the "best time" to be playing, Orr, Fenwick and Finlayson were all off the tee within the same 30min span in a field of 81.

Andrew Farmer

wins Scottish

Mid-Amateur

final at 19th

Kilmalcolm’s Andrew Farmer survived a storming fight back from Nicky Barr to clinch the 2009 DM Hall Scottish Mid-Amateur Championship after drama at the first extra play-off hole this afternoon at a wet Royal Burgess, Edinburgh.
Farmer, who had seen a four-hole lead slip away on the back nine, salvaged a remarkable up and down on the first extra play-off hole after finding an horrendous lie in the greenside bunker. The 35-year-old Renfrewshire player managed to splash out to 12-feet then sink the putt for a par, while opponent Barr agonisingly three-putted to see his come back hopes dashed.
The title win gave Farmer a unique mid-amateur (over-25s) double, having won the British equivalent nine years ago at Troon and came as a relief to the former Scotland international who was not enjoying the heavy rain in Edinburgh on the closing stretch:
“The back nine was tough for me so I’m delighted to have come through and won at the play-off hole. I really don’t enjoy playing golf in the rain and I’ve actually struggled a bit with my swing over the last couple of days.” admitted Farmer, a Commercial Manager with the Clydesdale Bank.
“I’m the second banker from Renfrewshire to win the title over the past three years, with my team-mate Matthew Clark winning at Duddingston in 2007, so it’s nice for golf in our Area. I’m proud to win a national title, especially as I’ve not had too much time on the golf course recently as I’ve been spending time with my young kids. My commiserations go to Nicky, who put up a great fight and played some great golf this weekend.”
Farmer was a member of Scotland’s winning European boys team championship squad back in 1992, playing in the same team as Stephen Gallagher and Gordon Sherry. He also represented the Scotland men’s team in 1997 and 1998.
He got his match off to a great start winning three of the first holes then hit a superb second shot into 18 inches at the par-5 sixth hole to set up a winning eagle. Barr rallied with some fine iron play. However he failed to convert some great chances to claw back Farmer’s lead.
Finally a birdie putt dropped at the tenth to reduce the lead to three holes and bogeys at the 15th and 17th after some errant Farmer tee-shots took the match to the final green.
Barr’s birdie at the final hole took the match into sudden death and just when it looked like his comeback was complete, Farmer’s sand save banked a memorable D M Hall Scottish mid-amateur championship victory.
It was Farmer's second 19th-hole win of the day. He had to go to an extra hole to take the measure of defending champion Ross Coull (Edzell) in the morning semi-finals.
At the presentation, D M Hall partner Chris Simpson paid tribute to both players:
“We’ve had some fantastic golf at Royal Burgess over the weekend and credit to both finalists for a great match. It was fitting that it came down to Andrew and Nicky today, having led the qualifiers on Saturday.”
“D M Hall is delighted to support the SGU in what is our ninth year of sponsorship of this event and thank our friends at Royal Burgess for being such great hosts this weekend.”

Fraser McLachlan wins 13th Footballers'

Classic tournament at La Manga Club

NEWS RELEASE BY THE AZALEA GROUP
Footballing stars from yesteryear once again graced the famous fairways of La Manga Club resort, when they battled out the 13th Footballers’ Classic.
Organised by Mancini Events and sponsored by Addison Lee PLC, more than 120 competitors took part in the five-night extravaganza, playing four rounds in glorious sunshine for the right to be crowned champions in both the amateur team event and the professional footballer category.
Among the celebrities involved were defending champion Alan McInally, Gary Owen, Gordon Strachan, Chris Marsden, Paul Jewell, Sammy Nelson, Mike England, Des Walker, Matt Le Tissier, Mike Newell and Derek Mountfield.
The professional footballer category was netted by ex-Mansfield and Morecambe man, and three-handicapper, Fraser McLachlan, who shot Stableford scores of 32, 37 and 39 points to win by one point from former Crystal Palace star Steve Lovell. Ex-Brighton goalkeeper Perry Digweed was a further seven points back in third.
Commenting on the win, McLachlan said: “To win such a prestigious event at this famous venue gives me great pride. It was tough and the competition was as strong as it has ever been and I look forward to coming back to defend my title next year.”
The amateur team event was scooped in convincing fashion by ‘The Water Boys’ who, despite not having consumed much of the H2O all week, managed to keep their balls on terra firma and win the competition by an incredible nine points.
This popular event will be back at La Manga Club in 2010 and details will be available soon at www.mancinievents.co.uk.

Elite club pros limber up at Dundonald

Links for Glenmur PGA title

By RON MARSHALL

Around 150 of the top club professionals from Britain and Ireland have had their first experience today of the formidable Dundonald Links, near Irvine, preparing for their flagship event which gets under way tomorrow.

Final practice for the £80,000 Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship has brought glowing comments from many quarters, despite the weather covering a spectrum that included heavy squally showers and – briefly - balmy sunshine.

Former winner Paul Wesselingh from Derby walked in after his round, warning everyone to keep their eye on another Derby man, James Whatley. The pair had just taken a tenner each from fellow PGA Cup players, Will Barnes and Danny Taylor.

A wealth of experience accompanied Scots Gordon Law, Craig Ronald and Robert Arnott as they teed off at the 10th - the first two former Scottish PGA champions, while Arnott, a PGA Cup player against the USA six years ago, won the Scottish qualifying round over Dundonald a month ago with a level-par 72.

The cut comes on Wednesday evening, after which the leading 50 and ties battle out the remaining 36 holes on Thursday and Friday, when the winner picks up a cheque for £10,000, and the 10-man team to take on the Americans in the PGA Cup (the club pros’ version of the Ryder Cup) will be announced.

In addition, the leading 10 players gain exemption into final qualifying for next year’s Open at St Andrews.

Dunbar, Gullane No 1, Musselburgh & North Berwick

Local Final Qualifying venues named for

2013 Open Championship at Muirfield

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE R&A
The Local Qualifying (LFQ) venues for the 2013 Open Championship will be Dunbar, Gullane (No. 1 Course), The Musselburgh and North Berwick.
The links at Dunbar Golf Club were first laid out in 1857 before being redesigned by Tom Morris Snr in 1894. Dramatically positioned by the estuary of the Firth of Forth, it has hosted many major Scottish championships including the Scottish Amateur and the Scottish Boys as well as the Ladies Home Internationals.
The No. 1 Course at Gullane has hosted Open Championship Local Final Qualifying six times. It opened for play in 1884, though golf has been enjoyed around the Gullane Hill for over 150 years. It has played host to many R&A events including the Jacques Leglise Trophy (1965), the Seniors Open Amateur Championship (2000) and the Boys Championship (1965, 1981).
The Musselburgh Golf Club has hosted Open Championship Regional Qualifying since 2006 and will do so again in 2009 and 2010. In 2013, however, it will host LFQ for the first time. The club was formed in 1938 and commissioned five-time Open champion, James Braid, to produce a championship lay-out, which, 71 years later, continues to test even the most able players.
The West Links at North Berwick is the home of four golf clubs: North Berwick (Founded in 1832); Tantallon (1853); Bass Rock (1873); and North Berwick Ladies’ (1888). In 1932, the course underwent some significant alterations by two-time Open Championship runner-up, Ben Sayers. Since then it has remained largely unchanged.
The 2013 Open Championship will be held at Muirfield on 18 – 21 July.

It's Farmer versus Barr for D M Hall

Scottish Mid-Amateur title

FROM THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION WEBSITE
Andrew Farmer and Nicky Barr, the leading qualifiers in the stroke play stages, have both made it through to the final of the D M Hall Scottish Mid-Amateur Championship after narrow semi-final wins at Royal Burgess Golf Club, Edinburgh this morning..
Farmer, the former British Mid-Amateur Champion and Scotland internationalist, won his match against defending champion Ross Coull on the first extra hole of a great battle this morning. The 35-year-old from Kilmalcolm passed up a great chance to clinch the match on the 18th green, missing a 4-foot birdie putt allowing Coull to level and take the match back up the first.
However Coull’s tee-shot on the 19th hole found sand and despite a good recovery shot, he failed to get up and down to match Farmer’s solid par.
In the second semi-final, former Scottish Boys international Barr was always in command against Crow Wood’s Robert Jenkins. An eagle at the 6th hole put the Perth & Kinross man one up before extending his lead to two hole with a birdie two at the 8th.
A par four at the 10th was good enough to extend his lead to three holes, however birdies for Jenkins at the 12th and 16th closed the gap to one hole but a costly bogey at the 17th from Jenkins presented 26-year-old Barr with a 2&1 victory.
This afternoon’s Final teed off at 1pm – click here for live hole-by-hole scoring from the Royal Burgess Golfing Society.

Sir Nick Faldo to play in The

Senior Open Championship

Sir Nick Faldo, who received a Knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours on Saturday, will attempt to join another illustrious group when he is part of a world class field for The Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard at Sunningdale Golf Club from July 23-26.
The six-time Major Championship winner will look to add the prestigious title to his three Open Championships and three Masters Tournament crowns and join a roll call of past winners that includes Bob Charles, Gary Player, Christy O’Connor Jnr, Loren Roberts and Tom Watson.
Sir Nick will take his place among a cast of international golfing icons in the strongest field to assemble in the 23 year history of the Championship, including Major Champions Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Greg Norman, Tom Watson and Ian Woosnam, as well as former European Ryder Cup Captains Mark James and Sam Torrance.
Faldo, who will turn 52 five days before the start of the Championship, won The European Open at Sunningdale in 1992 and is still the holder of the course record on the Old Course, which he set 23 years ago with a round of 62 in 1986.
“I’m very much looking forward to playing in The Senior Open Championship at Sunningdale this year,” he said. “It’s great to have the opportunity to play alongside so many familiar faces from my own era at a venue that, for many of us, holds some wonderful memories.
“In fact, I think I’m right in saying that I hold the Old Course record at Sunningdale and, whilst I’ve not shot 62 in a wee while, I’ll be hoping to go at least one better this year… I assume I’m off the forward tees!”
Arguably the greatest English golfer of all time and one of the world’s most successful players ever, Faldo remains the all-time leading points scorer in the history of The Ryder Cup and won 30 European Tour titles.
In 1996 he launched the Faldo Series to encourage young golfers both male and female. Nick Dougherty and Oliver Fisher were both back to back winners of the Faldo Series and Rory McIlroy is the latest graduate to win on The European Tour International Schedule.
After joining Sir Henry Cotton as the only other professional British golfer to receive a Knighthood, Sir Nick said: "I was delighted to hear the news that I will be receiving a knighthood and I am more than a little bit humbled to have been afforded this great honour.
"It has come as a real surprise and the reaction from my children, family and friends has made this a very special moment for me.
"Golf is in so many ways a very British pastime, and Britain the true home of the sport. In recent times, this nation has produced some of the finest golfers of any generation - players like Tony Jacklin, Ian Woosnam and Sandy Lyle - multiple Major-winning sportsmen that have represented this nation at the very highest level and not been found wanting.”
Last year’s Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard attracted record crowds to Royal Troon Golf Club and the world class field should ensure packed galleries at Sunningdale, which hosts the Championship for the first time.
Spectators can now buy discounted tickets before July 1 to see all of the action at Sunningdale Golf Club.
One-day tickets are now on sale for just £16.50 – a saving of £8.50 on the gate price – or £15 for those paying by MasterCard card if booked before July 1.
A season ticket is £60 before July 1 – a saving of £10 on the gate price – with a further 10% discount also available for customers booking and paying by MasterCard card, meaning they can watch all of the action for just £54.
Tickets for the Championship can be booked now in advance either via http://www.europeantourtickets.com/ or by calling +44 (0) 800 023 2557.

Ross Drummond signs off with a 66 for joint sixth

Cambridge beats Clayton in play-off for

Jersey Seniors Classic title

By Gordon Simpson, Press Officer
Ross Drummond finished with a dazzling 66 at La Moye for a six under par total of 210 to take joint sixth place in the Jersey Seniors Classic, three behind Delroy Cambridge of Jamaica, who beat Australia’s Mike Clayton at the third extra hole.
Drummond, who led after the first round of the recent US Senior PGA Championship, drew on that experience by firing seven birdies to climb through the field.
The 52 year old admitted: “That was a great way to finish things off. I had a terrible time on the greens in the second round and missed six putts of inside three feet, which is hard to believe. Fortunately my long to mid-range putting was spot-on today and I didn’t have too many short ones to worry about!”
Drummond’s round ignited around the turn, when he birdied the ninth, tenth and 11th as he and playing partner Roger Chapman (67) fed off each other.
Stirling’s John Chillas finished with a second successive 73 for a total of 215 and a share of 19th place.
Delroy Cambridge of Jamaica captured his fifth European Senior Tour title – and his first for seven years – as a three-hole play-off was required for the second successive week to decide the Jersey Seniors Classic at La Moye.
Cambridge beat Australian Mijke Clayton after getting up and down from a greenside bunker at the third sudden-death play for a par 4, while Clayton failed with his own par putt after visiting a different trap.
The powerful 59 year old Jamaican was recording his second victory in Jersey – and he drew on the memories of his previous success in 2002 to help him catch Clayton, who had led since shooting 64 on the opening day.
Cambridge admitted: “I remembered last night that I was five under par going into the final round seven years ago and shot 68 to win. This time I was also five under and I went to sleep believing that another 68 might just do it again. As it turned out, I was right!”
In fact, this time 68 was sufficient to match Clayton’s closing 70 and total of 207, nine under par, with Japan’s Katsuyoshi Tomori third a further shot behind.
Both players made regulation par 4s in the play-off, but ultimately it was Cambridge who delivered the winning blow with his perfect par putt at the third extra hole.
The Jamaican added: “It’s great to have won again before turning 60 later in the year. My wife kept telling me that if I got my putting sorted that I would win again. I am glad I listened to her. This was an important victory as I want to play in the Senior Open Championship at Sunningdale next month.”
Cambridge opened with a bogey 4, but picked up six birdies and one more bogey in his round of 68. Clayton confessed to disappointment over losing out, but is looking forward to another links test in the Ryder Cup Wales Senior Open at Royal Porthcawl on Friday.
Tomori fired a closing 70 to miss the play-off after his 10ft birdie putt a the last hung on the lip, while Kevin Spurgeon of England and Paraguay’s Angel Franco shared fourth place on 209.
Local Jersey resident Ian Woosnam has a frustrating final day, shooting 73 for a total of 214 and a tie for 17th place.
