Three Scots in leading 20 at London Club

Larrazabal runs up a 9 at par-3

hole in European Open Round 3

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Ryder Cup Dane Soren Hansen moved into contention for the European Open at the London Club in Kent on Saturday - and also witnessed something he has never seen before.
While Hansen defied the blustery conditions to shoot a five under par 67 and set the early clubhouse target on five under par, Spanish playing partner Pablo Larrazabal ran up a sextuple bogey nine on the 225-yard 17th.
It did not come close to Tom Weiskopf's 13 on the short 12th at Augusta during the 1980 Masters, but it was bad enough. Larrazabal, last year's French Open champion, went into the bushes long left, took a penalty drop, then had an air shot playing left-handed, then hit into another bush and had to take another drop.
After chopping his way to the green and eventually holing out he told Hansen to put him down for an eight - then thought about it again walking off the 18th tee and told him to change it to a nine.
"It was a pretty good nine in the end," he said after initially storming off, but then calming down enough to speak.
"But it's still maybe the best week of 2009." He is a huge Barcelona fan and went to school with Andres Iniesta.
For the second day running the 471-yard 18th, with water down the left, was causing even more problems. After a six there in his second round worldNo 3 Sergio Garcia went in the water again and this time ran up a triple bogey seven.
Scot David Drysdale had also taken a seven and Australian Brett Rumford an eight on the par four as the overnight leaders set off knowing the greatest challenge was still to come.
Indian Jeev Milkha Singh and France's Michael Lorenzo-Vera shared top spot on eight under at halfway.

Calmels and Manley in golfing Battle

of Waterloo on Sunday

From Steve Todd, European Challenge Tour Press Officer
François Calmels and Welshman Stuart Manley are set for their own Battle of Waterloo after respective rounds of 70 and 71 left them tied for the lead going into the final round of the Telenet Trophy in Belgium.
The pair, who are both chasing their first European Challenge Tour victory, are locked on ten under par 206, after a see-saw third round at Royal Waterloo.
After Calmels had seized the advantage with a flawless front nine, overnight leader Manley hit back and opened up a two stroke lead with a birdie on the 17th hole but a double bogey on the last saw him slip back.
The duo, who will once again form the last pairing in the final round, will now fight it out for the title close to the battle site where Napoleon’s troops were famously defeated nearly 200 years ago, although English pair Andrew Butterfield and Richard McEvoy are also poised two strokes behind the leaders.
Welshman Manley was disappointed with his finish after taking a seven on the last hole when he found the bunker but maintained he was still confident going into the decisive final round.
“I was trying to shoot low today to give myself a nice advantage going into tomorrow and get myself ahead but it didn’t quite work out like that,” said the 30 year old.
“On the last I took a nine iron from 192 yards and the wind just caught it and took it into the bunker. It ran right up the side and plugged as there was too much sand in there so I had no shot.
“I should have had a four on the last and a three shot lead but instead I’m tied but if I play like I did today I stand a good chance. “It will be nice to play with François again. He is a very nice guy and his partner (Ladies professional Jade Schaeffer) was very helpful, cleaning balls, and knows what she is doing, so it was fun out there.”
Frenchman Calmels had a less eventful round than his playing partner, posting three birdies and one bogey on the 14th, and he feels it will be a close run thing for the title.
“I thought two under par was an OK score today,” said the 27 year old Parisian. “I only made the one mistake but nothing really happened out there for me. I drove the ball quite well and had a lot of two putts. “I’ll try to play the same tomorrow but it depends on the weather a lot. With the wind it is quite easy to make a bogey or a double bogey out there, as Stuart did on the last.
“I’m staying with my mother this week as she lives near the course and she watched my back nine today and will tomorrow so it would be a nice place to win.”
Both Calmels and Manley are looking to go one better than their previous best finishes on the Challenge Tour - tied runner up in the OPEN DE SAINT-OMER OPEN presented by Neuflize OBC and the Apulia San Domenico Grand Final respectively in 2007.
Butterfield and McEvoy are tied for third place on eight under par after respective rounds of 71 and 68, with Dominique Nouailhac of France and Roland Steiner of Austria a further shot back.

Fleetwood foils record-

beating Byrne's bid

for halfway lead

Lancashire lad Tommy Fleetwood, beaten in last year’s British amateur championship final at Turnberry, is halfway towards prising loose the home grip on the Bidwells Scottish men’s open amateur golf championship.
The title has been won by Scots for the past three years but, at Murcar Links, north of Aberdeen on Sunday, 18-year-old Fleetwood, a Walker Cup team place contender will start the final 36 holes with a tally of seven-under-par 135 and a two-shot lead from course record-breaker James Byrne (Banchory).
Byrne’s superb second-round 65, a six-under-par effort shaved a shot off the day-old course record set by Fleetwood and another English teenager, Matt Haines, despite the strong southeasterly wind continuing, for a second day, to make life difficult for the competitors on the inward half.
Byrne, halfway through a four-year golf scholarship at Arizona State University, improved by seven shots on his first-round 72, in which he had dropped five shots to par over the last four holes.
Highlight was an eagle 3 at the fourth hole’s 489yd, which he covered with a drive of around 350yd, a lob wedge second and a 6ft putt. But for losing his place in the star-studded Arizona State University team who were playing in the NCAA Division 1 championship finals this past week, Byrne would not have been able to come home before the end of term and play in this championship.
Defending champion Wallace Booth from Comrie could do with some of the James Byrne inspiration. Wallace, who started with a one-over-par 72, had a 73 for 145, despite getting through the first 11 holes in three under par.A triple bogey 7 at the 13th undid all his good work.
"It's tough out there when you play as badly as I did," said 23-year-old Wallace.
"James Byrne has shown with his score that the wind doesn't have to make all that difference to your score. I am just going through a frustrating period and I am pretty upset with myself. Today was much worse for me than yesterday was, even though in scoring terms it was only one shot worse."
Fleetwood leapfrogged over Byrne into a two-shot lead with a 69 for seven-under 135. He responded to the arrival of several Walker Cup selectors in his gallery by birdieing five holes in a row from the seventh.
“They should come and watch me more often,” he said rather cheekily.
“If I keep doing what I’ve been doing over the first two rounds, I can’t see anybody catching me over Sunday’s final 36 holes – although, as they say, tomorrow is another day.”
The only fly in ointment on an otherwise perfect day for Master Fleetwood was the FA Cup final result.. He is an Everton supporter and the first question he asked as he came off after his round was: "What was the result in the FA Cup Final?" Answer, of course, Chelsea 2, Everton 1.
The second Scot in the leading four is Murrayshall’s Gavin Dear, winner of the Irish open amateur stroke-play three weeks ago and before that the Craigmillar Park. Going even further back, Dear, Wallace Booth and Callum Macaulay won the World Cup of men’s amateur golf – the massive Eisenhower Trophy (which is on display in the Murcar clubhouse) – in Australia last October.
Dear had to take a week off golf completely after feeling out of sorts during the Brabazon Trophy English open championship – and he still feels his game is not back on track.
Gavin followed open a opening 68 with a par 71, in which he felt he actually struck the ball better than in the first round, to be four shots behind the leader, alongside another young Englishman, Matt Haines
A total of 46 players with totals of 148 or better qualified to play Sunday’s final 36 holes. Among the men who missed out were Walker Cup prelim squad members Steven McEwan (150), Gordon Yates (151), Keir McNicoll (152) and Todd Adcock (155).

Bidwells Scottish open amateur stroke-play

Byrne breaks record with a 65

and jumps clear of field

The southeasterly wind was still blowing across the Murcar Links today but did not stop James Byrne, the 20-year-old Banchory and Arizona State University player, from surging clear of the early finishers with a superlative round of six-under-par 65.
As some of the holes have been changed since Richie Ramsay shot 63, then 62 in the Scottish Challenge in 2006, the pair of 66s by English teenagers Matt Haines and Tommy Fleetwood were accepted as a new course record.
And that record last fewer than 24 hours before Byrne brought it down by a shot after a brilliant outward half of six-under-par 60.
Byrne birdied the second from 5ft, grabbed an eagle 3 at the fourth after a huge drive downwind of 350yd and a 50 degree lob wedge to within 6ft of the stick, then strung together a hat-trick of birdie 3s from the seventh to the ninhe, holing from 15ft at the seventh, 8ft at the eighth and driving the 323yd ninth green with a three wood (!) and two-putting from 20ft.
Byrne improved to a high point of seven under par by holing from 15ft at the 11th.
"The wind, as in the first round, made it tough from there but I was able to escape with only one shot dropped, at the short 16th where it is so difficult to hit the green with the cross wind," said James.
"I did scramble a bit and holed some part-saving putts over the last few holes - the same holes that cost him five shots to par on Friday - including a good one at the last where I was way long and left with my second but was able to run my chip down the slope with within 3ft of the hole to get away with a par."
Byrne had therefore set the clubhouse lunchtime target with his addition of 65 to his first round of 72 ... five-under-par 137.
But for losing his place in the Arizona State University team who were playing in the NCAA Division 1 championship finals this past week, Byrne would not have been able to come home early and play in the Brabazon Trophy and here at Murcar Links.
"Arizona State have a very, very strong team and over the last few weeks I was not able to win a place in it. I hear they've recruited a very good young American for next season, so it's going to be even tougher to get into the team of five that plays in tournaments. But that's the way I like it, " said James who is halfway through his four-year scholarship.
Defending champion Wallace Booth from Comrie could do with some of the James Byrne inspiration. Wallace, who started with a one-over-par 72, had a 73 today for 145, despite betting through the first 11 holes in three under par.
A bogey at the 12th and a triple bogey 7 at the 13th undid all his good work. He did birdie the long 14th but there were two more bogeys lurking over the closing holes .. at the 15th and the 18th where he bunkered his drive left for 39 home.
At 3pm Byrne's lead stood at four shots from Englishman Dale Whitnell (71 for 141) and Eddie Pepperell (Drayton Park) 73 68.

Steve Stricker leads at "pitch-and-putt"

Crowne Plaza Invitational

Steve Stricker shot a second consecutive 63 for a halfway total of 14-under-par 126, a record for 36 holes and for any consecutive rounds at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at the Colonial Country Club, Fort Worth, Texas.
The phrase "pitch and putt" springs to mind with only a light wind and very soft greens, pros of US PGA Tour calibre would plunder most courses they come across.
Tim Clark, Vijah Singh and Sean O’Hair shot 64s on Friday and were lined up right behind Stricker: Clark was one shot back, Singh one more and O’Hair yet another.
Jason Day (65) was 10 under, Woody Austin (68) was another stroke back, and Ryan Palmer (63) was 8 under.
“Wind is what this course needs to get difficult, but we haven’t seen it yet," said Stricker.
. ... I kind of like what’s going on right now.”
Colonial members can only shake their heads at these scores, especially after course alterations were supposed to make things tougher for the big boys, not easier.
The cut at level par 140 was further evidence of how tame the course is playing.
Par would’ve beaten Ben Hogan the last two times he won this event, in 1953 and ‘59.
Former (British) Open champion Ian Baker-Finch won’t be playing this weekend, not after six bogeys and a double bogey left him with a 78.
“That’s just lack of play,” said Baker-Finch, who hadn’t played a US PGA Tour event since the 2001 Colonial, and he missed the cut then, too.The 48-year-old Australian left the television booth to tee it up again this week in celebration of the 20-year anniversary of his Colonial victory.“Maybe when I’m 50 I’ll be able to play on the Champions Tour,” he said. “But I’m happy to get back to the booth.”
