Perthshire's princes of golf on top of the world again

Gavin Dear with the president of the Irish Golf Union and the open championship trophy.

Scotland 1-2 in Ireland with

Dear winner, Booth second

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Murrayshall's Gavin Dear and Wallace Booth from Comrie recaptured the form that, with the help of Callum Macaulay, won the Eisenhower Trophy world amateur team championship last October when they finished first and second, well clear of the field, in the Irish men's open amateur stroke-play championship over the Royal Dublin club's Bull Island links today.
It was Dear's second 72-hole win in a matter of weeks after his success in the recent Craigmillar Park Open but this was a field crammed full of Walker Cup team place rivals and elite squad players from the Continent.
Gavin from Scone came through the gale-force winds on the opening day with a 77 and then took the halfway lead with a second-round 69 before digging in at the front with Sunday rounds of 72 and 71 for a final total of one-over-par 289.
Dear, 24, has two ambitions to achieve before he turns professional in late September. The first and foremost is a Walker Cup cap at Merion Golf Club in the States and secondly he wants to make the top 10 of the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings.
The Irish win - he follows in the footsteps of Richie Ramsay (2005) and Lloyd Saltman (2007) - coupled with the Eisenhower Trophy triump, not to mention becoming the first Scot to win the Dixie Amateur in Florida over the Festive period - should clinch a place in compatriot skipper Colin Dalgleish for the Perthshire man and it will be interesting to see how many places Gavin rises in the rankings from his current 42nd position when the revised list comes out from the R&A on Tuesday.
And for Wallace Booth, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, the Scottish stroke-play title-holder from 2008 and, by the way, ranked No 58 in the world, to chase him home at the head of such a strong field is a terrific boost for Perthshire and Scottish amateur golf.
Booth, 23-year-old older brother of Curtis Cup prodigy Carly - whose swing he has worked on, had the best Sunday aggregate with rounds of 70 and 72 to add to his opening effortsd of 76 and 73. Wallace totalled three-ovber-par 291, finishing four shots clear of the third-placed Irishman Nicky Grant from Knock who scored 78, 69, 72 and 76 for 295.
The next best Scots were young James Ross (Royal Burgess) and Ross Kellett (Colville Park) in joint 10th place on 302. Ross, who has been gradually making a name for himself in Edinburgh circles, is obviously ready for bigger things.
With only the precise number of 39 qualifiers getting through to the final day, Ross had to survive a card countback to be one of the players on the 158 mark to survive. His scores were 80, 78, 71 and 73. Kellett scored 80, 75, 71 and 76.
Scott Borrowman (Dollar), who totalled 306, and Paul Betty (Hayston), who scored 312, were the last of the six Scots to get through to Sunday's play.

James beats Darcy in Mallorca Senior Open play-off

From Steve Todd, European Senior Tour Press Officer
stodd@europeantour.com
Mark James defeated former Ryder Cup teammate Eamonn Darcy in a play-off to win the Son Gual Mallorca Senior Open and clinch his second European Senior Tour victory after a thrilling final day in Palma today.
The 55 year old Englishman birdied the third extra hole after the pair tied on ten under par 206 to make it back-to-back wins for former Ryder Cup captains on the Senior Tour, following Sam Torrance’s victory in the DGM Barbados Open.
His €45,000 first prize also means James replaces Torrance at the top of the Senior Tour Order of Merit, while Darcy once again missed out on his maiden Senior Tour title, finishing runner up for the eighth time.
James and Darcy, who were Ryder Cup team-mates in 1977 and 1981, both produced magnificent final rounds to deny overnight leader Roger Chapman a dream debut victory and the chance to become the joint youngest Senior Tour winner at 50 years and nine days.
Irishman Darcy had set the clubhouse target after a flawless final round 65 at Son Gual Golf but James was in equally scintillating form, carding a 66 to take the contest to a play-off.
Both players parred the replayed 18th twice before James produced a fine approach shot to within five foot for a birdie on the third extra hole, while Darcy could once again only manage par as his 15ft putt shaved the hole.
That meant James, the 1999 Ryder Cup Captain at Brookline, captured his first Senior Tour title since the European Senior Masters in 2005.
“It’s great to win and I’m delighted,” said the 18 time European Tour champion. “I’ve been playing a lot better recently and to win is just great.
“I played well down the stretch and to hole that putt well give me a lot of confidence going to America for the US Senior PGA Championship in a week. You aren’t going to hole too many putts on this course so I hit it really close.
“Myself and Eamonn go back donkeys' years so it was great to be in a play-off together. I remember playing together in the 1977 Ryder Cup because Darcy kept on taking me and Ken Brown off to a nightclub in the days before anyone noticed those sort of things! If he had won I would have been delighted for him.
“I don’t know why Eamonn hasn’t won on this Tour – he did nothing wrong at all today and shot a very low score and he made pars in the play-off so I’m sure the future is rosy.
“You never know in a play-off – it could go either way. I’ve been playing well lately though. I played great in the Legends with Des Smyth a couple of weeks ago when we finished fifth. This win on a different type of course has given me great confidence that I can go anywhere and pick up my swing and play well.”
James added that he wanted to play more in Europe this season, as well as continue on the US Champions Tour where he won the Senior Players Championship in 2004.
“I’m hoping to play a full season in America but I want to play here whenever I can. The atmosphere is great and it has been great to see the guys again. It’s been fantastic this week.”
Darcy’s second place was his best finish on the Senior Tour since 2006 but he admitted he was disappointed not to break his duck after a stunning final round in which he carded seven birdies.
“I thought ten under par was going to be enough but credit to Mark for shooting a low round,” said the 56 year old. “My putter was hot. It was like the old days! I never looked at the leaderboard all day and I hoped it was going to be enough walking off but it wasn’t to be.”
Chapman, who had a two stroke overnight lead, bogeyed the first hole but rallied around the turn before he found the water on the 12th hole to finally put pay to his chances of a record equalling debut win.
He said: “I’m disappointed but if you said to me before the tournament you’d finish third on your own I would have taken it. I probably played better today than the first two days but couldn’t hole anything. Overall I’m delighted though with my start on the Senior Tour.”
Mike Cunning, winner of the season opening Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters presented by The Stapleford Forum on his own Senior Tour debut, carded a superb 65 to join Darcy as the holder of the joint course record and finish fourth.

Richie Ramsay jt 14th - highest European Tour finish

Vancsik wins Italian Open by six

with John Daly joint second

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Argentina's Daniel Vancsik captured the BMW Italian Open championship in Turin today - his second European Tour title - but what will have golf fans really talking is that American John Daly finished joint second in only his second event back from a four-month lay-off.
Vancsik, who took the 2007 Madeira Island Open by seven strokes, won the Italian title by six after a superb closing round of 65.
Daly's 66, though, lifted him from 11th into a tie for the runners-up spot with England's Robert Rock and Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin.
The 43-year-old former Open and US Open champion, down at 794th in the world, is still serving a six-month US Tour ban after being put in jail to sober up late last year and in February underwent gastric band surgery which has already brought his weight down from 20 to 16 stones
Aberdonian Richie Ramsay, pictured above, achieved his highest European Tour finish and collected his biggest cheque with a final total of seven-under-par 277 - made up of rounds of 67, 70, 70 and 70 - to get a share of 14th place. His financial reward was 19,110 Euros.
Ramsay was not the highest finishing Scot in the tournament, however. That honour went to Alastair Forsyth who scored 73, 68, 67 and 68 for eight-under--par 276 and a share of eighth place. Forsyth earned 25,805 Euros.
Glasgow-born Canadian Alan McLean tied for 25th place on 280 to earn 12,155 Euros.
The only other Scots to beat the halfway cut, Gary Orr earned 9376 Euros for a share of 34th place on 281 and Marc Warren 2730 Euros for a share of 67th place on 287.

THE PLAYERS' CHAMPIONSHIP AT SAWGRASS

Alex Cejka leads by FIVE but he's

got the Tiger on his trail

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Germany's Alex Cejka has extended his lead at The Players Championship to five strokes but will have to deal with Tiger Woods in Sunday's final pairing at TPC Sawgrass in Florida.
Overnight leader Cejka teed off in Saturday's last pairing with England's Ian Poulter with both golfers entertaining thoughts of a maiden US PGA Tour victory.
Cejka began at 11 under par, leading Poulter by two strokes with world number one Woods in a tie for 22nd place on four under. By day's end at the Players Stadium Course, the Czech-born German held a five-stroke lead at 11-under with Woods leading a six-man group including Poulter in a tie for second place on six-under. Cejka birdied the last for a third-round 72 while Poulter came away with a disappointing three-over 75.
Woods said: "Just grinding it out. This is basically our fifth major and that's how it's playing. It's hard, it's fast, it's dry and you just have to keep plodding along."
It is the largest third-round lead in the 36-year history of the event but Woods has already overcome that margin of deficit in reeling in Sean O'Hair for victory at Bay Hill in March.
On Saturday, Tiger shot a five-birdie, three-bogey 70 some two hours before the leaders finished and was also joined by Henrik Stenson of Sweden, South Africa's Retief Goosen and fellow Americans Jonathan Byrd and Ben Crane.

Cejka birdied the fifth to go to 12 under but when he did slip up, also bogeying the seventh, Poulter failed to capitalise, bogeying the eighth to leave Na in sole possession of second place, only for the American to bogey the 10th and 11th.
Poulter fell further off the pace at the next hole, three-putting on the ninth green for a bogey 6 to slip to seven-under, and there was more woe for the Englishman at the 11th, ranked second easiest on the course on Saturday, when his second shot from 254 yards out found water to the right of the green.
Poulter made amends from the drop zone 111 yards from the pin when he sent his fourth shot to seven feet from the hole but then missed the par putt to continue his slide. Woods had also found trouble off the tee at 11, and played his second shot from the base of a pine tree left handed with a flipped over iron.
While that paid dividends his third shot from out of position on the right fairway demanded a cut around a tree but Woods' shot never turned back in from the left and he was forced to settle for a bogey six to fall to four under.
The setback was short-lived, however, as Woods birdied the 12th and overcame a bogey at 15 with back-to-back birdies at 16th and 17th to get to six under.
The world number one flirted with the rough and the water on his way to the 18th green but got up and down for par and a round of 70.
Also moving up the leaderboard was two-time US Open champion Goosen. The South African birdied the 14th and 16th holes to get to seven under but bogeyed the par-four 18th to fall back to six under.
Brian Davis shot a 71 to finish at five under while fellow Englishman Justin Rose shot a 72 to finish his third round on three under, but compatriot Paul Casey shot a four over 76 to finish at one under for the week.
