LYTHAM TROPHY HALFWAY SCOREBOARD

Dear, McNicoll, Kellett, Booth

and Campbell make the cut

Five Scots beat the halfway cut at leading 40 and ties in the Lytham Trophy at Royal Lytham St Annes, Lancashire today.
England's Dale Whitnell is leader on level par 140 after rounds of 68 and 72.
But Craigmillar Park Open winner Gavin Dear (Murrayshall), top Scot in the R&A World Amateur Rankings, is on his tail, only one shot behind with rounds of 71 and 70.
Last year's St Andrews Links Trophy and Leven Gold Medal winner Keir McNicoll is the next Scot in the hit parade. He had rounds of 74 and 70 for 144 - one shot ahead of Ross Kellett (Colville Park) (75-70) and Wallace Booth (Comrie) (70-75).
Completing the Scottish quintet who will be taking part in Sunday's 36-hole action is last month's Scottish champion of champions' tournament winner Glenn Campbell, the former Scottish amateur match-play champion from the Blairgowrie club. Glenn had rounds of 76 and 72 for eight-over-par148, which was the limit mark for qualifying.
Last weekend's Edward Trophy play-off winner Paul O'Hara (Colville Park) missed out by one shot with scores of 73 and 73 for 149, the same total as this year's Scottish boys' match-play champion David Law (Hazlehead). David score 74 and 75.
Steven McEwan (Caprington) looked certain to qualify after opening with a 71 but he slipped back today to a 79 for 150 and bowed out.
On 151 was Greg Paterson (St Andrews New) with 76 and 75.
Gordon Yates (Hilton Park) missed out with a pair of 76s.
Nothing went right for Peterhead's Philip McLean in a second-round 81 for 154, which was three better than his Buchan colleague, Kris Nicol (Fraserburgh) who scored 78 and 79.
Scottish universities champion James White (Lundin), beaten by O'Hara in last Sunday's Edward Trophy play-off suffered a big second slump from a 73 to an 85 for 158.
FROM THE GOLFWEEK.COM WEBSITE
Alistair Tait reports
There is only one way for England’s Dale Whitnell to go if he hopes to keep his record of improving every year in the Lytham Trophy.
Winning is the only option for the 20-year-old.
Whitnell added a second-round, two-over-par 72 to his opening 68 for a level 140 total to lead the Lytham Trophy heading into the final two rounds.
Scotland’s Gavin Dear holds second place a shot behind after a 70. First-round leader Shane Lowry shares third place at 142 with Englishmen Luke Goddard and Mark Thistleton.
Whitnell is playing in his third Lytham Trophy. He finished sixth in his debut. Last year he was runner-up to Matt Haines, missing out on a play-off for the title by a shot.
There’s a reason why Whitnell does well here.“I just love this course,” he said. “It’s my favourite tournament and my favourite course. It’s a great test. It’s good to come to a course where you feel comfortable and have confidence in your game. It obviously brings out the best in me.”
Whitnell is a member of the 28-man Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup squad. He’s in the squad for good reason. Whitnell won the Portuguese amateur championship in February, and is a member of the English Golf Union’s Elite squad.
Needless to say, the +4.7 handicapper has set his sights on making the trip to Merion Golf Club September 12-13 as one of the 10 GB&I players to take on Buddy Marucci’s U.S. team.
“My goal this year is the Walker Cup. It’s the pinnacle of amateur golf. I’ve played in the Eisenhower Trophy (World Amateur Team Championship) but I want that Walker Cup spot. I’m going to turn pro at the end of the season and if I make the Walker Cup team then I will have done everything in amateur golf.”
Winning the Lytham Trophy would practically cement Whitnell’s place.“That’s the goal this week.”
Dear propelled himself into contention by playing the back nine in two-under-par. He is in good form, too. He warmed up for Lytham by winning the Craigmillar Park Open. Last year he helped Scotland win the Eisenhower Trophy. He also took his game Stateside and won the Dixie Amateur.
Dear is also a member of the GB&I Walker Cup squad, and is heavily fancied to make the 10-man team.
Lowry has a good chance of joining Whitnell and Dear on the flight to the United States in September. The 22-year-old Irishman is also in the GB&I Walker Cup squad. Whether he flies to the U.S. as Lytham Trophy winner depends if he can replicate the form that saw him shoot an opening 66, rather than his second-round 76.
The burly Irishman did well to get round the Lytham lay-out in just six shots over par. He was five-over after eight holes and looking like returning a big score.
“Yesterday I wasn’t in any bunkers but it was pay back time today,” Lowry said. “I was in five or six. I was even in the same one twice!”
Lowry hit what he thought was a perfect 4-iron at the 196-yard, par-312th hole only to see the ball come up short and plug in a greenside bunker. He made a double bogey there when he needed two attempts to get out of the trap.He birdied the 13th but gave the shot back at the 15th and played the back nine in one-over par 37.
“It’s disappointing but I’m still in the tournament.”
So too are a number of players looking to impress GB&I Walker Cup captain Colin Dalgleish and his team of selectors over the final two rounds. The smart money says this year’s Lytham Trophy winner will be a GB&I Walker Cup squad player.

Andrew McArthur three strokes off

the pace in Moroccan Classic

From Steve Todd
European Challenge Tour Press Officer
stodd@europeantour.com
Former Scottish amateur champion Andrew McArthur from Windyhill heads into the final day of the European Challenge Tour's Moroccan Classic just three strokes behind leader Englishman Robert Coles after a third round 69 in El Jadida.
The 29 year old from Glasgow birdied the first hole then picked up further shots on the eighth, 11th and 13th holes but bogeyed the last to finish on six under par, with Coles carding a round of 71.
McArthur is now well placed to try to add to his victory in the Reale Challenge de España on the European Challenge Tour last year, although he admitted the dropped shot on the last when his drive found the bushes could be costly.
“That was my first bogey in 35 holes since I had a double bogey on 18 on the first day,” he said. “I had a wry smile coming up the last knowing that but I managed to salvage a six rather than a seven.
“I should really stick to a three wood rather than a driver on that hole. I don’t know what it is. There are much more difficult tee shots out there but there’s something about having to come over the bushes.
“I missed tons of chances out there but I’m content with the way I’m playing. If the conditions stay like this tomorrow and I can hole some more putts there is definitely a low score out there.”
Coles birdied the last hole after three putting the 17th to card a 71 as he looks to add to his own sole Challenge Tour title victory in the BA-CA Golf Open, presented by Telekom Austria in 2003.
“The difference was I didn’t hole any putts today apart from a 12 footer on the first and the one of the last,” said Coles.
“I played OK on the back nine but missed a few chances and then three putted 17. It was nice to finish with a birdie rather than have that in my memory.
“I think it depends on the weather a lot tomorrow but it is possible to shoot a low score out there. I’m just going to try to play like I have done the past three days. I’d like to play well tomorrow.
“The last time I won I came from behind but I would prefer to have a three shot lead than be that many shots behind.
“Hopefully it will be a good weekend all round with West Ham also winning today!”
McArthur’s compatriot George Murray, another past Scottish amateur champion, from Anstruther in Fife, carded a one under par 71 to move to one under par for the tournament.

Frenchman Levet leads by two from

English rookie Stuart Davis

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
France's Thomas Levet has a two-stroke lead going into Sunday's final round of the Spanish Open at Girona, to the north of Barcelona.
But if he fails to lift the title, 35-year-old European Tour rookie Stuart Davis could be the man to take advantage.
While Levet stayed out in front with a one-under-par 71 to lie 14 under par, Englishman Davis improved from sixth to second with a superb 67 which included four birdies in the last seven holes in the windy conditions.
Among the players he overtook was Dubliner Peter Lawrie, trying to become the first man to make a successful defence of the trophy since Max Faulkner in 1953.
Lawrie bogeyed the last for a 71 and 11-under total, but needs only to think back 12 months to believe he can still do it. He came from five adrift to beat Spaniard Ignacio Garrido in a play-off in Seville.
Levet was four clear at one point but bogeyed the short 16th as Davis made his charge.
The 40-year-old from Paris, runner-up to Ernie Els in the 2002 Open and part of Europe's winning Ryder Cup team in Detroit two years later, had been two ahead of Dane Soren Hansen at halfway.
Welshman Stephen Dodd and Paraguay's Fabrizio Zanotti are in joint fourth place on nine under. American John Daly is down on level par, two double bogeys on the back nine taking him to a 74.
Daly, down at 788th in the world, is in Europe for the next month.
It wasn't a good name for the other member of the "Lawrie clan" in the field. Paul Lawrie, the 1999 Open champion, was blown away to a third-round 80 for 220.

SPANISH OPEN THIRD-ROUND NEWS

Two double bogeys knock

John Daly down the field

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Two double bogeys in today's third round destroyed any hopes John Daly had of a top 10 finish on his return to competitive golf this week.
The former US Open and Open champion, pictured right, out since December and still serving a six-month US Tour ban imposed after he was put in jail to sober up last October, fell deep into the pack with a third round 74 at the Spanish Open in sunny Girona.
It was all looking so much better for the controversial 43-year-old American, down from 20 to 16 stones after lap-band stomach surgery in February, when he went to the turn in 34 to stand four under.
That was still nine adrift of Frenchman Thomas Levet at the time, but Daly then took 5 at the short 11th and a 7 on the 492yd par-5 15th.
"First an eight-iron plugged under the lip of a bunker and in trying to get it out the ball popped up and buried again," said the American. "Then on 15 I flushed a five-iron from the rough, but it caught a tree.
"Other than that it was pretty damn good. I love the way I am swinging - I'm hitting it solid and I've made only three bad swings, which is good coming back. I'm just not making any putts and I've got to get that sorted out."
Daly, down at 788th in the world and in Europe for the next month, had to settle for a level par aggregate of 216 with Sunday's final round to come.
Meanwhile, Dane Soren Hansen reduced Levet's lead to one with a birdie at the long third and then saved par on the next after going over the green into sand.
They were 13 under and 12 under respectively, while joint third were defending champion Peter Lawrie and Spaniard Jose Manuel Lara on 10 under.
Lara birdied five of the first seven holes, while Dubliner Lawrie, trying to become the first player since Max Faulkner in 1953 to retain the title, resumed with five successive pars.

Who remembers Finlay Morris - rising Scottish

golf star who died young in a car crash?

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
The tragic death in a car crash this week of 19-year-old rising Welsh star Ben Enoch brought back memories for this writer of the death in similar circumstances, quite a few years ago now, of Finlay Morris.
Morris had turned professional and was being talked of in terms of being "the next John Panton or Eric Brown," in the days when these Scottish legends were at the top of the golfing tree.
Does anyone else apart from me remember Finlay Morris?
I was going to put a few words about him on the website but my memory is not good enough and GOOGLE does not give him a mention.
If YOU any memories of Finlay Morris, I would be delighted if you would E-mail them to me at the above address.

Tiger's late bogeys let Bubba Watson

in to lead at Quail Hollow

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Bubba Watson fired a superb seven-under-par second round of 65 to grab a share of the lead at the Quail Hollow Championships in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Watson equalled the course record of 30 over the front nine at Quail Hollow Club and carded eight birdies and an eagle against three bogeys to draw level with Retief Goosen at the top of the leaderboard on eight under par.
Overnight leader Tiger Woods bogeyed two of his final three holes to finish level par for the day and seven-under for the tournament alongside Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson and George McNeill.
Watson began his second round on the 10th and having opened with a birdie and then a bogey, sank three consecutive birdies from the 14th to gather momentum.
He was briefly checked by bogeys at the 17th and 18th to reach the halfway point one-under but birdies at the first, third and fourth saw Watson climbing the leaderboard.
A 27-foot putt at the seventh brought an eagle and a birdie at the eighth saw him end the day level with Goosen, who completed a second consecutive 68.
Goosen sank six birdies, the highlight a 31-foot putt on the 10th, with just two bogeys in his four-under effort.
Woods, meanwhile, began his day with a bogey at the first but fought back with birdies at the fifth, ninth - courtesy of a 55-foot putt - and 10th before finding a greenside bunker at the 16th which led to a bogey.
The 33-year-old then dropped another shot at the last to fall one shot behind the leading pair.

Dubliner Peter Lawrie motivated to

retain Spanish Open championship

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Nobody has made a successful defence of the Spanish Open since Max Faulkner way back in 1953.
But if Dubliner Peter Lawrie completes the double on Sunday it will taste particularly sweet. The 35-year-old, who burst into third place on Friday with six birdies in eight holes, is not best pleased about a lack of recognition this week.
Lawrie, who goes into the third round at PGA Catalunya near Girona three strokes behind France's Thomas Levet, said after his 66: "There's not one picture of me anywhere."
He added: "I thought I would at least deserve something - it's disappointing and a little bit of motivation.
"Somebody said about me being the ex-Spanish Open champion. I said 'No, I am the current Spanish Open champion.'
"I just have to try to play well and let the scores make the point."
The pre-event publicity was dominated by John Daly's golfing comeback after four months out and Colin Montgomerie's late decision to play.
But Montgomerie is already out of the event after crashing to an 81 in the much windier afternoon conditions and Daly - still serving a six-month US Tour ban imposed after he was thrown in jail to sober up last October - is deep in the pack on two under.
Levet, Dane Soren Hansen and Lawrie had things much calmer before lunch and were never likely to be dislodged from the top three spots.
With Hansen double-bogeying the last for a 70, seven worse than his course record-breaking opening round, Levet leads by two at 13 under thanks to a 67.
