PGA EUROPRO TOUR FINAL Q SCHOOL

Steven Hume heads nine Scots who beat

the cut at Frilford Heath

Englishmen Paul Dwyer (Clitheroe) and Mark Wilkinson (West Mallin) share the lead at two under par 140, going into the final round of the PGA EuroPr0 Tour Final Qualifying School at Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire.
Wilkinson was the leader at four under 67 after his opening round on the Red course, but he found the Blue course a tougher proposition, going through both nines one over par to card a 73 to drop to two under.
Dwyer, a regular on both European and Challenge Tours in the last decade, started on the 10th on the Red course and was three under for his second round after 14 holes, taking him to five under after his opening effort of 69 on Wednesday – but three consecutive bogeys dropped him back to a 71 and a two-under-par 36-hole tally of 140.
Three players sit one stroke behind the leading duo – all three of them playing the red course today. Peter O’Keffee and Scotland's Steven Hume both posted level par rounds of 71 to follow 70s on the first day on the blue course, while Stuart Archibald (Blackmoor GC) undid his good work from his three under opening round, dropping two shots after posting 73.
Sandeep Grewal (Heswell) carded a fine 69 on the blue course to move from two over to level par for the tournament, where he is joined by Rob McGuirk (Princes) whose one under 70 on the blue course today cancelled out his one over opening round of 72 on the red course.
Biggest mover of the day was Duncan Stewart (Grantown on Spey), with a 68 on the blue course to move to one over par 143 and a share of ninth place after a four over 75 opening round – with an eagle 2 at the 365yd 10th the highlight for the Highlander.
On the same 143 mark is Tartan Tour campaigner Chris Kelly with scores of 70 and 73. Scott Herald (Mearns Castle Golf Academy is sharing 13th place of 144 after contrasting efforts of 68 and 76.
Young Edinburgh amateur Shaun McAllister dropped back with a 75 for 145 but he is still very well placed in a share of 21st place. A double bogey 6 at the 14th wiped out some of the benefit of biries at the fifth, 13th and 17th. Shaun also bogeyed the first, sixth, 10th, 11th and 18th.
The final round begins at 8am on Thursday morning, with 124 players, including nine Scots, making the cut at nine over after 36 holes.
Other Scots who will be playing a third and final round are Steve Mackie from Dunnikier Park after socres of 73 and 76 for 149. Former Scottish amateur champion John Gallagher (Swanston Golf) made it with a shot to spare with a pair of 75s for 150.
Christopher Campbell (Grantown on Spey) and Graeme Lornie from Aberdeen, playing out of the "Paul Lawrie Foundation," both beat the cut with nothing to spare. Campbell scored 78 and 73 for 151, Lornie 80 and then a splendid 71 for 151.
Scots who failed to qualify were Kenneth Glen (Royal Musselburgh) with 81 and 71 for 152; Scott Jamieson from Glasgow with 79 and 76 for 155, Ross Cameron (Saltire Energy) from Ellon with 75 and 80 for 155; Zack Saltman (Aegon) on 157 with 84 and 73 and West Linton amateur Graham Turner on 163 with rounds of 83 and 80.
Jamieson's failure must be a heart-break for the man who played four years on the American college circuit and then campaigned on the US mini-tour circuit. He seems to have lost the touch that made him such a great prospect when he was an amateur. Ironically, he did very well in last week's first stage of the PGA EuroPro Tour Qualifying School

Finlayson keeps his head as Patrick

and McGhee falter on inward half

Edzell's Mark Finlayson headed the field today with a par round of 72 in the Linksland Series event at Kingsbarns Links, Fife.
Mark had a roller-coaster round with birdies at the first, fifth, 11th, 12th and 13th but bogeys at the second, 10th, 14th, 15th and 17th in halves of 35 (one under par) and 37 (one over par).
He had a shot to spare from David Patrick (Elie) and James McGhee (Turnhouse), both of whom could have/should have won it but for costly lapses on the inward journey.
Patrick birdied the third, sixth, 12th and 15th but bogeyed the second and 11th and then had a horrendous triple-bogey 6 at the short 13th in halves of 35 and 38
McGhee was chuntering along niceely with no bogeys to mar four birdies in the first eight holes - the first, fifth, seventh and eighth - as he reached the turn in four-under-par 32.
Then it all went pear-shaped for the Turnhouse men. He had a double bogey 7 at the long 12th, a bogey 4 at the short 13th and then another double bogey 7 at the long 16th for 41 blows to come home.

Søren Kjeldsen named European Tour

Golfer of the Month for March

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE EUROPEAN TOUR
Søren Kjeldsen’s impressive victory in the Open de Andalucia de Golf 09, his second victory in Spain in six months, earned him the award of The Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month for March.
The 33 year old Dane from Aalborg, who receives a jeroboam of Moët and Chandon champagne along with an engraved Alms Dish in recognition of his success, was the choice of the panel comprising members of the Association of Golf Writers as well as television and radio commentators.
The Tour award - which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2009 – is now under the sponsorship banner of Leisurecorp, the company whose groundbreaking agreement with The European Tour has created The Race to Dubai, which culminates in the $10 million Dubai World Championship in November.
Kjeldsen, who makes his Masters Tournament debut at Augusta National tomorrow, set a new course record at Real Club de Golf de Sevilla in the third round with a stunning ten under par 62 and went on to win his third title by three strokes after a terrific tussle with Scotland’s David Drysdale on the final afternoon.
Kjeldsen’s victory followed a highly credible joint seventh place finish in the World Golf Championships – CA Championship at the Doral Resort and Spa, Miami, a fortnight earlier, and lifted him into the top 15 in The Race to Dubai and to a career high of 42nd in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Indeed, Andalucia has proved a very happy hunting ground for Kjeldsen as last November he also won the Volvo Masters at Valderrama.
Kjeldsen won the award after another exceptional month for European Tour Members on the world stage. Estanislao Goya became the youngest Argentine winner on The European Tour when he captured the Madeira Islands Open BPI – Portugal, while Y E Yang became only the second Korean to win on the US PGA Tour when he won the Honda Classic.
Retief Goosen was also successful in America in winning the Transitions Championship, his first US PGA Tour victory in four years, and Thailand’s Chapchai Nirat set a new record of 32 under par in winning the SAIL Open on the Asian Tour by a staggering 11 strokes.
There were also wins for Jyoti Randhawa, in the Singha Thailand Open; Steve Alker, in the HSBC New Zealand PGA Championship; and Eduardo Romero, in the Toshiba Classic on the US Champions Tour.
Iain Carter, golf correspondent of BBC Radio 5 Live, said: “Søren’s success in Andalucia and the manner in which he won, with the course record in the third round, made him a deserving recipient of the award. March was a notable month for The European Tour with some exceptional performances, particularly from Y E Yang, but Kjeldsen’s victory stood out to win the award.”
Kjeldsen is the third winner of The Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month Award this year after Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy (January) and Australian Geoff Ogilvy (February).
The Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Year will be selected from a panel from the Association of Golf Writers, Radio and Television following the Dubai World Championship at the Earth Course, Jumeirah Golf Estates, from November 19-22, 2009, where the winner of The Race to Dubai will be confirmed.

Strathlene boys almost pull off double whammy

Chris Robb scrapes

through at 20th

into last 32

Scottish schoolboys title-holder Chris Robb (Inchmarlo) is through to the last 32 of the Scottish boys' championship at Royal Aberdeen.
But full-time golfer Chris, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, was given his toughest test so far ... and had to go to the 20th hole in his third-round tie before getting the better of Buckie boy Ryan Bain.
Bain is a member of Strathlene Golf Club and clubmate John Drummond, a four-handicapper, caused the biggest upset of the third day by beating Paul McPheee (King James VI).
McPhee, a scratch player and winner of the Scottish Under-14 boys' open stroke-play title in 2006 at Deeside Golf Club, also in Aberdeen, was beaten 2 and 1 by the bespectacled Drummond.
Drummond showed that result was no fluke by going out again in the afternoon and advancing to the last 32 with a 3 and 1 win over Anglo-Scot Andrew Smith from the Ponteland club in the North-east of England.
Top seed David Law continues to justify his rating . He is into the fourth round - and still have to play the last three holes. He won by 4 and 3 against Ryan Campbell (Grangemouth) in the third round and now plays Calum McLean (Cowglen).
Ian Redford (St Andrews New), another of the fancied contenders for the Under-18s' match-play crown, had his second last-green win in a row, disposing of Scott Costello (Kirkhill) to earn what will almost certainly be another all-the-way tie against Edinburgh's Tom Blennerhassett (Marriott Dalmahoy). Blennerhasset had his biggest win so far, by 5 and 4 over Dundee's Matthew Reid (Downfield) to advance to the round of the last 32.
Paul Shields (Kirkhill), beaten by Michael Stewart in last year's final, must be nurturing hopes that he can go all the way again this week.

In the evening play, Shields was a 5 and 4 winner over Thomas White (Milnathort) and now plays Alexander Ferguson (Paisley) for a place in the last 16.

Young Scottish pro trio bid for Welsh

Open title at Bull Bay, Anglesey

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY PROFESSIONAL GOLFERS' ASSOCIATION
A trio of Scottish golf pros will bid for glory at this month’s Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship.
Airdrie’s Christopher Tierney, Stirlingshire’s Lee Mackie and Belfry-based Brodie Macdonald will be the full extent of the Tartan Army making the trek to Wales’ most northerly golf club – Bull Bay.
They will be among 120 professionals from all over the UK & Ireland descending on the Anglesey club for the second year running from April 22-23.
This year’s event, which has a £12,500 prize fund plus entry to the SWALEC Wales Challenge Tour event and Welsh Open PGA Championship for the winner, is again expected to be a tough affair according to Bull Bay head professional John Burns.
“The course is only 6,200 yards long but the pro who won last year did so with level par which shows you can’t rip it up,” said Burns.“In a day and age when courses are being stretched to 7,500 yards, it shows that this course is a good challenge and a very fair test.”
The event sees the launch to the PGA national tournament schedule as well as Ryder Cup Wales’ summer of golf.
Rob Holt, chief executive of Ryder Cup Wales 2010, said: “We’re very pleased to be back at Bull Bay for a second year, kicking off yet another exciting Summer of Golf from this most welcoming of clubs.
“We are grateful for the support of the Isle of Anglesey Council for what promises to be a strongly contested tournament.”
Full list of entries and competitor draw for the event at Bull Bay can be found under ‘Schedule, Scores and Results’ at http://www.pga.info/WelshOpenYoungPGAProfessionalChampionship.aspx
