Former Scottish boys' stroke-play champion Shaun McAllister (Craigielaw), playing as an amateur, is well up on the leaderboard at the end of the first round of the PGA EuroPro Tour Final Qualifying School over the Frilford Heath Red Course in Oxfordshire.
Shaun, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, returned a one-under-par 71 to be lying in joint third place after "catching fire" on the inward half of his round.
He was two over par at the turn with bogeys at the fourth and sixth but then Shaun birdied the 10th, 14th, 15th and 16th. What a pity he bogeyed the 18th for 33 home.

Jeev Milka Singh gets dream Masters

draw - he's partnering Tiger Woods!

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE ASIAN TOUR
Indian star Jeev Milkha Singh can’t help but feel like a major winner as he prepares for his third Masters Tournament which starts on Thursday.
The reigning Asian Tour number one has enjoyed practice rounds with Greg Norman and Padraig Harrington and exchanged pleasantries with golf legend Arnold Palmer at Augusta National Golf Club.
And to top it all, Singh was on Tuesday handed a dream draw where he will play alongside world number one and four-time Masters champion Tiger Woods in the opening two rounds.
“I’m excited about that and looking forward to it. It’ll be great to have the opportunity to play with Tiger and it’ll be interesting. I’ll be a little nervous but I’ll try to make the most of it and enjoy it. It is a pleasant surprise,” said Singh, who has played with Woods previously in Asia.
Driving down Magnolia Lane for the third straight year has ultimately given Singh the self-belief that he finally belongs amongst the world’s top echelon.
He claimed a second Order of Merit triumph in Asia last season and posted a career first top-10 in a major at the PGA Championship. Last month, the 37-year-old Indian finished fourth at the WGC-CA Championship in Doral, which further boosted his confidence that he can someday become Asia’s first major champion.
“It’s great to come back to the Masters. Every time you are here, it’s different. I’m excited and it’s something really special. I’m happy with the game. I’m playing well and we’ll see what happens,” said the 31st ranked player in the world.
“My next goal will be to win a major. I think I’ve got the game to win a major. I feel it all depends on the mindset and how you deal with the pressure. A lot of it comes down to the short game. I feel I do have the game and hopefully before my golfing career is over, I will have a major under my belt.
“The top-10 at the PGA Championship and the fourth in Doral, those results have given me more confidence. I’ll slowly work on finishing better than fourth. One day, you’ll never know what will happen.”
Renowned as a global traveller, Singh knows that the hard work he has put in all the years has eventually paid off. Apart from six wins on the Asian Tour, Singh has won four times in Japan and twice in Europe.
“I’ve worked hard and there is more trust in my game and more trust in my golf swing. I’m always looking forward to the bigger events. That’s why we play golf for, to prove myself at the highest level.”
Singh was excited to play with Norman, who will captain the International team against the USA in the Presidents Cup later this year. The Indian is in the frame to make Norman’s team.
“It was a special day as growing up, I’ve always looked up to him and often watched him play. I had a good nine holes and we talked about general stuff but didn’t touch anything about the Presidents Cup. I guess he wants to get to know the International players and I was fortunate enough to play with him,” said Singh.

North District re-introduce men's

Order of Merit on trial basis

By ROBIN WILSON
Many a North golfer has often questioned selections into North District teams for representative matches and wonder why they are being overlooked.
Now after missing out on Scottish area team finals for the past few years, the North Executive are hoping that by re-introducing for a trial year a North District Order of Merit table they may unearth some hidden talent by way of a points system based on rankings at their own championship and selected club tournaments.
A similar merit table ran for six years, from 1992 to 1998, when with a bit more finance to spare and some sponsorship the North District were able to provide prizes. The re-introduced merit table with less funds and no sponsor will be self-financing and have an entry fee of £10.
The OOM counting events will have two points-awarding structures, one for seven 36-hole open tournaments, where 124 points will be assigned to the top nine finishers, ignoring competitors not members of a North District club, and 100 points at three nominated 18-hole tournaments. A player can play in as many events as they wish but points from only five will count towards the individual's final total.
The 36-hole qualifying fixtures will start with the North District championship at Fortrose & Rosemarkie on May 23 and continue at six other events:
June 13: Badenoch Open at Kingussie & Newtonmore.
June 27: Braid Open at Brora.
July 4: Brodie Trophy at Forres.
July 18: Balblair Trophy at Tain.
August 8: Ness Motors at Inverness.
August 29: Glen Grant Tantalus at Lossiemouth.
Recognising that some clubs do not have 36-hole events but hold prestigious and well-supported one-round competitions, three 18-holers have been included:
August 9: Walkers Shortbread at Elgin.
August 15: Torvean Open at Inverness.
September 5: Loch Ness Open at Inverness.
Individual Entry Forms to the men's OOM can be downloaded from the North District website – www.sgunorthgolf.com

NOMINATED JUNIOR OPENS
Sandy Aird, the Forres Golf Club professional, continues his sponsorship of the the North District's junior boys' Order of Merit in two age groups, under-14 and under-16 on January 1. The nominated junior opens are:
Friday, April 10: Elgin.
Sunday, April 19: Royal Dornoch.
Sunday, April 26: Spence Trophy (Inverness).
Sunday, July 5: Bain Trophy (Thurso).
Friday, July 10: Kingussie.
Thursday, July 16: Strathpeffer Spa.
Friday, August 7: Torvean.
Friday, August 14: Invergordon.
October 19-20: Match-play qualifying rounds (Forres).

The last men's Order of Merit winner in 1998 was Robbie Sheils (Moray). Other winners over the seven seasons were:
George Paterson (Fortrose & Rosemarkie) 1992-1993, Ian Cameron Muir of Ord) 1994, Neil Hampton (Nairn) 1995-1996 and Stewart Wilson (Royal Dornoch & Inverness) 1997.

FIXTURE LIST CHANGES AT TAIN
Tain Golf Club have this season made two significant changes to their traditional fixture list.
Balblair Distillery have given their name and sponsorship to a men's 36-hole open (now listed in the North District Order of Merit tour).
This date was previously the pipe-opener to their August Golf Week but on the sponsor's request to raise the competition's individual profile, the date has been brought forward to Saturday, July 18.
Tain Golf Club's previous five-day Golf Week competition reverts to a four-day event from Monday, August 3 to Thursday, August 6 and added into it is a women's event with the same format, two qualifying medal rounds preceding match-play.
The women's inclusion came by way of a suggestion at the end of last year from the “Golf Week Widows” who had to wait until the end of the week for a competitive game in the mixed open competition.
It was taken on board by the Tain Committee and becomes the the first ladies' open qualifying and match-play event in the North. There is clearly a demand for such a competition for a similar event at Duff House Royal is always over-subscribed and already Tain has attracted entries from the Banff club's waiting list.

Hoey scores first Euro
Tour win the hard way

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Northern Ireland's Michael Hoey came from five shots back and then won a play-off at the third extra hole to capture his first European Tour title on Sunday.
Thirty-year-old Hoey, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, winner of the British Amateur title at Prestwick in 2001, at long last joining former Walker Cup team-mates Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell and Nick Dougherty as a winner on the circuit, beat Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano in the Estoril Portuguese Open at Oitavos Dunes to the west of Lisbon. It won him £192,755 and a two-year Tour exemption - and it made him the first player out of four to beat the Madrid golfer in sudden death.
They had tied on the seven-under-par mark of 277, with world number 273 Hoey scoring a joint best-of-the-day 66 after teeing off joint 19th, but fearing that a missed eight-footer on the last would cost him dear.
It didn't, though, and after holing from the same distance to triumph he said: "It's a joke really - a bit of a dream. I didn't really think about winning going out, but I was lucky - I got all the breaks.
"I couldn't believe I was in the play-off, let alone getting up and down, up and down, up and down."
The play-off began with two more trips down the 18th. Both players missed the green first time, but reigning British Masters champion Fernandez-Castano holed from eight feet and Hoey from four.
Next time the Spaniard almost converted a 35-foot birdie attempt and Hoey, short of the green once more, sank a five-footer to stay alive.
When they switched to the 17th they missed the green again. This time, however, Fernandez-Castano missed from 12ft and Hoey seized his chance.

Houston Open winner
Paul Casey has got
that Masterly feeling

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Paul Casey believes his maiden US PGA Tour victory can propel him to Masters success this week.
Casey, 31, won the Shell Houston Open in Texas on Sunday night after beating American J B Holmes at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off, handing the Englishman his first win in the United States in 77 starts (scroll down for all the final totals).
"This is huge. I love the Masters and I feel it's my best opportunity of a major," Casey said. "The golf course sets up very, very well for me and winning this week isn't a jinx like winning the par-three contest."
He added: "Phil Mickelson has won the week before gone on to win at Augusta, Sandy Lyle has done it as well and it would be nice to be another Brit to do that."
Casey's success at the weekend followed on from victory at the Abu Dhabi Championship in January and a run to the final of the WGC-Accenture Match Play in Arizona, where he was beaten 4 & 3 over 36 holes by Geoff Ogilvy of Australia.
That form and his victory in Houston sent Casey to a career-high No. 6 in the latest world rankings issued today and the European Ryder Cup star said belief in his ability and hard work had been the key to his breakthrough.
"You know, self belief is a very difficult thing to explain and to work on because you don't want to be arrogant," Casey said.
"You don't want to be cocky but you have to have belief in yourself. For me it's just been a lot of hard work, playing a lot of golf, and a bit of time.
"Hopefully I'm not any different than I was as a kid growing up. You know, it's sort of the way I am to people or anything else.
"I now have that belief when I step onto the golf course. I'm looking to beat guys and not worry about the other guys, just what am I going to do to get around the golf course in as few a shots as possible, and that's what I did here."
