Double for Supermac Callum - Scottish

Amateur Golfer of Year again

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
Tulliallan star Callum Macaulay was awarded his second successive Scottish Golfer of the Year award tonight in front of a packed house at the Scottish Golf Dinner in Glasgow.
The 25-year-old’s achievements in his final season as an amateur were celebrated at the glittering event hosted by television personality Dougie Donnelly at Glasgow's Crowne Plaza Hotel.
Living up to his status as the country’s leading amateur golfer, he won the Allied Surveyors Scottish Amateur Championship at Carnoustie and also enjoyed individual success at the Tennant Cup.
However Macaulay, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, also excelled as a team player with his form of the previous year earning him selection for the GB & Ireland squad that contested the St Andrews Trophy with a powerful Continent of Europe side.
Asked to lead the team out in both days’ singles by team captain Colin Dalgleish, he finished the two-day match unbeaten in four rounds of singles and foursomes, as did fellow Scot Wallace Booth of Comrie.
The pair teamed up again later in the season, along with Murrayshall’s Gavin Dear to produce the performance that turned 2008 into one of the most special years in the history of Scottish amateur golf.
Just six years after it was decided that the four Home Unions would compete separately in the World Championships rather than as Great Britain & Ireland, the Scots became the first of them to lift the famous Eisenhower Trophy in the contest that marked the 50th anniversary of the event.
Buoyed by that success in Australia, Macaulay then moved on to the European Tour Qualifying School where, among 900 competitors, he was the lone amateur to win his full tour card.
Evidence that he is at home among the elite was provided just last weekend when his spectacular back nine in the final round at the Madeira Islands Open, including eight birdies as he roared home in 28 strokes, earned him a runners-up finish and a cheque for £73,000 that will greatly ease the pressure of his first year on tour.
With Macaulay competing on the European Tour again this week the award was picked up on his behalf by Ian Rae, the Scottish Golf Union’s national coach who is still working closely with him.
Macaulay did not repeat last year’s achievement of winning both the Scottish Golfer of the Year title and the SGU Order of Merit, however, because of the remarkable consistency of Caprington’s Steven McEwan, who claimed seven top 10 finishes to take that title.
Booth, who won the Bidwells Scottish Strokeplay Championship as well as the Newlands Trophy in the course of the season, and Dear meanwhile picked up special awards for their contributions to the World Championship win.
Another who shone on the international stage was Boys Order of Merit Trophy winner Michael Stewart, the Scottish Boys champion, who captained the GB&I Boys team to victory in the Jacques Leglise Trophy, while at senior level he put in a fine performance to finish runner-up at the St Andrews Links Trophy.
At the other end of the experience scale was Gordon MacDonald who won the Scottish Seniors Order of Merit after achieving four top five finishes in their counting events, forcing Macaulay’s clubmate Bob Stewart, winner of the Scottish Seniors Strokeplay title, into second place.
Scottish Ladies amateur golf was also celebrated in a season that saw Booth’s sister Carly become the youngest ever player to represent GB&I in the Curtis Cup. That team contained a record-equalling four Scots with Krystle Caithness, Michele Thomson and Sally Watson accompanying the teenager in the match played at the Old Course.
In the domestic season Kylie Walker and Kelsey MacDonald, won the ladies and girls Order of Merit titles respectively by impressive margins.
Guest speaker Professor David Purdie rounded off a memorable evening which saw former European Tour star Stephen McAllister and Ladies European Tour player Lynn Kenny among those presenting awards.

Drysdale best of seven Scots to

make the cut in Seville

Greenock's Chris Doak lost the lead but bumper total of seven Scots in all made the halfway cut (par 144 or better) in the Open de Andalucia de Golf 09 in Seville - David Drysdale (67-137), pictured right, Alastair Forsyth (64-138), Doak (73-139), Colin Montgomerie (72-139), Andrew Coltart (73-141), Steven O'Hara (76-143) and Callum MacAulay, for the second week in a row, on the limit mark with a 70 for 144.
German Marcel Siem turned on the style to take a one-shot lead from France’s Jean-François Lucquin and England's Graeme Storm.
Siem signed for a round of 67 and a nine-under-par tally of 135 and Storm a 66 to be only one behind, along with Lucquin (69).
Siem highlighted the key to his successful week thus far as the fact that he has managed not to lose his temper.
"I think I will never change completely, but I am pretty calm at the moment," said the 28 year old, who even kept his cool when three-putting the last for bogey.
"I said to my caddie that I feel like Retief Goosen - I don't have any emotions."
After a round which included eight birdies and three dropped shots, he told the story of two years ago in Cologne when he broke his driver after missing the cut.
"There were a couple of children around. I nearly cried, thought how can I do this, then went up to them and said 'Don't do this ever',” he added.
"I should be a boxer or a footballer, when I can show my emotions."
Storm is happy to be finding his form again, after having his clubs stolen in Dubai last month.
"I was watching Liverpool against Chelsea on TV. At 10.30pm they were still there, and at 10.45 gone.
"I put in a police report, but somebody is enjoying playing with them in the sunshine in Dubai.
"There was a two iron I'd had for years, a lob wedge specially made for me and a new driver that I loved. It was a massive loss."
Lucquin, who beat Rory McIlroy in a play-off to land his maiden European Tour title at the 2008 Omega European Masters, carded three birdies, two bogeys and an eagle 3 at the 522yd 16th to add a 69 to his opening 67.
David Drysdale’s 67 in the last match out was enough to make him the leading Scot with a share of fourth pace at seven under 137 with Swede Michael Jonzon and Spaniard Carlos Del Moral.
The Spanish duo of The Quinn Direct British Masters winner Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño and Pablo Larrazábal - who chipped in from the rough at the 18th for par - were joined by Denmark’s Thomas Björn and Scotland’s Alastair Forsyth on six under 138, leaving themselves three shots to make up over the weekend.
Forsyth had a terrific third round of eight-under-par 64, 10 shots better than his Thursday effort.
Montgomerie sagged a bit, losing five shots in 24 hours with a 72 for 139, the same mark as Doak who missed the cut last week.
Six Scots did miss the cut, heading by Aberdeen's Richie Ramsay who missed out by just a single stroke after a 71 for 145.
Scott Drummond had a 76 for 146, the same total as Stephen Gallacher with a 71.
Andrew Oldcorn slumped to a 76 for 147 and Paul Lawrie's good second-round 71 could not repair the damage of his first-day 77.
Marc Warren had two bad days - 75 and 74 for 149.

The three other home teams are all ahead of the Scots whose best three from four individual scores daily has given them a 54-hole tally of 656.
England (618) lead by 11 shots from Spain with France (630) in third place.
Ireland (639) are lying fourth and Wales (646) are in sixth position.

On the third day, they were able to discount a 77 by Gordon Yates (Hilton Park) with counting scores of a pair of 70s by Keir McNicoll (Carnoustie) and Steven McEwan (Caprington), pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, and a 72 by Scott Borrowman (Dollar).
McNicoll and McEwan have had counting scores in each of the three rounds.

Peruvian trip for Hinton and Martin

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH GOLF UNION
Craig Hinton (The Oxfordshire - Berks, Bucks & Oxon) and Ben Martin (Worthing, Sussex), members of the England ‘A’ Squad, have been selected to represent the EGU in the 21st Peruvian Amateur International Tournament at Lima Golf Club from April 15 to 18.
It will be their first overseas assignment under EGU colours and they will compete for the Manuel Prado Cup (team event) and the Carlos Raffo Cup (individual).
Hinton, 20, is an all-round sportsman having represented Oxfordshire at junior level in hockey, athletics, cricket and football, including a trial for Wycombe Wanderers at 14. Now concentrating solely on golf, he had a brief spell at college in Kentucky and last year had good finishes in the Tillman Trophy and St Andrews Links Trophy.
Sussex-based Martin, 18, is perhaps more well-known in the Caribbean where his family lived and where he met with considerable success. He has recently won the Trinidad & Tobago Amateur Championship for a record fourth time. He also won the Caribbean Junior Championship in 2007 in Antigua.
Back in Britain, last year Martin won the Sussex Open and the Worthing match-play championship and finished third in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and the Sussex Colts Championship.
The format for the Peruvian Amateur is 72 holes of stroke play, both players’ scores to count over all four rounds for the team event. English players have enjoyed successes in the Peruvian event.
In 2005, on the first occasion the EGU sent players to Lima, Neil Chaudhuri from Leicestershire shared the individual title with Mario Maya of Venezuela after the pair played three holes of a sudden death playoff and then ran out of daylight.
In 2006, James Morrison from Surrey and Yorkshire’s John Parry finished second in the team event while Morrison was runner-up in the individual prize. Two years ago, on the last occasion English players competed, Jamie Abbott and James Smith finished fourth in the team competition.

John Edfors still in driving seat

at Black Mountain Masters

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ASIAN TOUR
Hua Hin, Thailand: Sweden’s Johan Edfors stayed firmly on track to win the inaugural Black Mountain Masters after the second round on Friday but Filipino legend Frankie Minoza was hot on his heels.
Big-hitting Edfors carded a four-under-par 68 for a two-day total of 12-under-par 132 at Black Mountain Golf Club and widened his overnight lead to three strokes in the US$500,000 Asian Tour event.
The 49-year-old Minoza, one of Asia’s most decorated golfers with 16 professional titles across Asia and Japan, continued to roll back the years as he fired a 68 for a share of second place on 135 alongside Australian Darren Beck, who shot a 66 thanks to two eagles.
Another Australian, Jason King returned a second straight 68 to lie a further stroke back while talented Thai Chapchai Nirat, fresh from a record 32-under-par victory in India last week, and Korean teenager Noh Seung-yul will enter the weekend rounds five off the pace following a 68 and 71 respectively.
Edfors, a three-time winner in Europe and playing on a sponsor’s invite this week, was disappointed to drop his first shot of the tournament, at his last hole, after five earlier birdies on the card.
“I played pretty solid and took advantage of the par fives, same as yesterday. It was a solid round despite what happened on the last,” said Edfors, who birdied the four par five holes.
The 33-year-old was happy to keep his small army of Swedish fans thrilled with his wonderful performance after two days. “It’s nice that they are out here cheering for me. It feels like you’re in Sweden. Most of the people help me out and it’s fun. It gives me some extra momentum,” said Edfors, whose three victories all came in a bumper 2006 season.
Minoza, who plans to attend the Champions (Seniors) Tour Qualifying School in the US later this year, faded on his inward nine, dropping two bogeys in succession at the 15th and 16th holes to spoil a card which included four birdies and an eagle.
“I was hitting it very good except for the last few holes. I think I was getting a bit tired,” said Minoza, who won twice in 2007.
“I will just go out and enjoy it. If you start thinking about winning, it goes a different way. I’ll play it shot by shot and we’ll see what happens. It’s a good score today, no complaints despite those bogeys. There’s nothing for me to lose.”
The 30-year-old Beck, who enjoyed an impressive rookie season on the Asian Tour last year, moved up the leaderboard quickly with two impressive eagles and another birdie on his front nine. Three more birdies took him to eight under for the day but he topped his drive on the 16th hole into a bush which led to a costly double bogey.
“It is pretty embarrassing as you have the TV cameras, who don’t follow you all day and then they’re there to catch that,” said Beck, who hails from Sydney.
Beck’s eagles came courtesy of superb approach shots which saw him convert putts from seven and 15 feet at the second and sixth holes respectively. He had finished second in the Hero Honda Indian Open last year and wants to improve on that performance.
“A win will be nice. I have been playing well enough but I’ve not been putting that well in the last few events. I think I can give it a good shot,” he said.
Chapchai, who set an Asian Tour 72-hole scoring record when he won the SAIL Open last week, brilliantly birdied the last three holes to give himself a shot at a second straight victory. “I got lucky with three closing birdies as I didn’t drive the ball well all day and hit only four fairways,” said the burly Thai.
“Five shots is a big gap and Edfors is a strong player. He can easily shoot six, seven birdies a day on this course but I’ll keep trying.”
Thailand’s Prayad Marksaeng, who needs a top-three finish to safely secure a place in the US Masters next month, left himself with a tall order after a 72 put him in tied 38th place while Jesper Parnevik of Sweden missed the cut after a 77.
The halfway cut was set at 144 with 72 players qualifying for the weekend rounds.

Bratton and Paterson make most of dream

start to win NE Foursomes scratch title

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Newburgh club pro Ian Bratton and Northern club scratch senior George Paterson never looked back after making a dream start to today’s final of the North-east Alliance match-play foursomes tournament for the Evening Express Shield at Murcar Links.
Bratton and Paterson won the first five holes on their way to a 6 and 5 victory over McDonald Ellon tour pro Ross Cameron and his +2 amateur partner, Scottish schoolboys champion Chris Robb (Inchmarlo).
“We both played well and what a fantastic start we had,” said Bratton who had been a beaten finalist in the past. “We won the first five holes and had birdies at the first, second and fourth holes.
Patterson, who was a Murcar Links member for more than 25 years, said: “The only hole we lost – the sixth – was to a birdie 3 so that shows how well we teamed up. We did not have a single bogey in the 13 holes we played and we must have been four under par at the finish after getting a fourth birdie at the eighth.”
Robb, a long-hitter and shaping up as one of the leading contenders for the Scottish boys’ match-play championship at Balgownie the week after next, said: “We actually played well after we lost the first five holes but there was no way back after that start.”
The final of the Press & Journal Shield, played under handicap, saw Stephen Scott (Auchmill) and Jim Scott (Peterculter) come back from two down after eight holes to beat Craig Carnegie (Kemnay) and Gary Homer (Lumphanan) by 2 and 1.
The Scotts received one stroke. For them the turning point was winning the ninth, 10th and 11th holes to move from two down to one up in the space of three holes.
Like George Patterson in the scratch final, Jim Scott had a lot of "local knowledge" to fall back on. Jim was a Murcar member for many years. In fact, before he gave up the game for 13 or so years from the 1990s to 2006, Jim won the Murcar club championship and the club stroke-play title as well. He played off scratch and played in the North-east District team.
Coming back to the game after retiring from teaching, Jim now has 11 of a handicap and has thoroughly enjoyed his first season ever on the North-east Alliance circuit.
"I've met lots of the guys I've not seen since my earlier time in golf. It's been great," said Jim Scott.
Today's results:
Evening Express Shield (scratch)
Final – I Bratton (Newburgh) & G H Paterson (Northern) bt R Cameron (McDonald Ellon) & C Robb (Inchmarlo) 6 and 5.
Press & Journal (handicap)
Final – S Scott (Auchmill) (4) & J Scott (Peterculter) (11) bt C Carnegie (Kemnay) (4) & G Homer (Lumphanan) (9) 2 and 1.
