The Greenbrier files for bankruptcy

A United States upmarket golf resort that hosted the 1994 Solheim Cup match is in financial meltdown.
The Greenbrier resort, a former playground of presidents and royalty, has filed for bankruptcy protection – but could keep its doors open pending a possible acquisition by hotel giant Marriott.
Charleston, West Virginia resort had been losing money for five years and was left holding debts of more than $91 million to its owner, CSX, the Jacksonville, Florida.-based railroad company.
Bethesda, Maryland-based Marriott is willing to buy the 6,500-acre resort for up to $130 million – pending court approval and a new labour deal with Greenbrier workers.
If The Greenbrier is to survive, Marriott needs a better working arrangement with nine labour unions representing more than 900 employees. CSX has agreed to provide $19million in financing to The Greenbrier while it’s in bankruptcy, but the funds come with a price: relief from what the resort insists are high labour costs equalling more than 70% of annual revenue. Greenbrier attorney Dion Hayes said during a bankruptcy hearing the industry average is 40 percent or less.

Munro Ferries, Sutherland are silverware

winners as Alliance season comes to end

By ROBIN WILSON
Due to a gusty day at Brora Golf Club, the leading aggregate scores of North Golf Alliance members, Munro Ferries (Tain) and Seann Sutherland (Bonar Bridge/Ardgay) remained intact at the final fixture and both became first-time winners of the individual silver, Ferries the Scratch Quaich and Sutherland the MacKintosh Salver.
Both trophies are awarded for the four best scores over the Alliance season that ended at Brora on Sunday.
To win these trophies two scores are required from courses North and South of the Ord of Caithness. In the North, Ferries used a scratch 75 at Durness and a 73 at Wick to add to his two 68s in the South, one at Tarbat and one at Tain, for his total of 284.
Runner up was the holder, Wick's Ronnie Taylor, some seven shots behind.
Seven-handicapper Sutherland (during the season he was cut to six) set out his net aggregate stall with a 67 at Tarbat and a 68 at Tain, then added in the North a 67 at Reay and a 71 at Wick for his 72-hole net aggregate of 273 and a three-shot win over Grant Maxwell (Reay).
In Sunday's individual scoring, the Tain scratch trophy winner with a 76 had to stand aside for Brora's talented youngster Calum Stewart, who turned 16 just four days earlier, and on Sunday came in with a marvellous one over par 70 for his second first scratch place of the month.
Showing maturity beyond his years Stewart had full control of his swing in an outward half of level par 35, his only two bogeys coming at the most difficult of the outward holes, the third and fifth. They were cancelled out by birdies at the seventh and ninth holes. He matched par for the next eight holes and only a three-putt on the final green prevented what should have been an outstanding par-matching 69 in the conditions.
With the home advantage, and led by Stewart's net 69, the local members walked away with the team trophy. Brora had two more members with similar net scores, Peter Etheridge and Shaun Ashe, while club and alliance secretary Tony Gill, with a net 70 off five completed the Brora winning total of 277.
Gill beat Mike Sangster (Tain) and Bryan Ronald (Thurso) into second and third places in the Class 1 Handicap section which placed Ferries into second scratch with his 76. Bill Murray (Wick) was third handicap.
Brora electrician Peter Etheridge sparked life into his card with an excellent inward 39 to claim first handicap in Class 2 from clubmate Ashe on a better last nine. Their net 69s were two ahead of third placed Alister McCowan (Durness).

HUGH HUNTER'S CLACKMANNAN COUNTY NEWS

MAGNIFICENT MACAULAY

After only five events in his three months as a golf professional, Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan) has made his mark on the European Tour with an unbelievable performance in the Madeira Open. His first two rounds, both three over par 74s, left him right on the qualifying mark; a third round of 67 brought his total to two over par, leaving him in 10th position, and then, saving the best till last, he put together a seven-under-par score of 64 to lift him into the runner-up spot.
Indeed, had the winner (Estanislao Goya from Argentina) not finished with two pars to keep a slender one-shot lead, it could have been Callum lifting the trophy.
His final outward nine was a pretty steady 36, but the fireworks started immediately with two birdies then a par. It was then a run of six birdies in a row to give an inward nine of 28--- just one shot off the European record—and a course record-equalling 64. The money wasn’t too bad either---just over 77,000 euros for his four days' work, but the main thing was to move up the world rankings and keep his Tour card for next year.
This performance must give him enormous confidence for the season and he will be hoping for more good form in the next two weeks when he plays in the Andalucia Open in Seville, followed by the Portuguese Open one week later.
A brilliant performance Callum. Well done!

CALL-UP FOR SCOTT BORROWMAN

There was more success for local golf with the selection of Dollar’s Scott Borrowman for the Scottish team of four to play at Sotogrande, Spain in the European Nations Cup event. Scott joins Keir McNicoll, Steven McEwan and Gordon Yates in defending the trophy won by Scotland in 2008.
The event is played over four days from March 25th to 28, and the best three scores on each day count towards the title.

PROVAN SALVER

The Clackmannan county team will be in action this coming weekend in the first of three matches to decide the Provan Salver for 2009. The opening match is against Perth & Kinross over the Craigie Hill course, Perth. HILL is the operative word here, and some patience is needed to deal with the slopes.
Team Captain John Gullen is optimistic as always.
“We hope to get off to a winning start and there is no reason why this team cannot do that”
Selected for the County are:
Ross Benvie (Braehead), Steven McIvor (Alva), John Maxwell (Tulliallan), Darren Hulston (Dollar) Ian Ross, Jamie Aitken, Scott Moffat, David Milloy (all Alloa).

Callum climbs from 1,009th to 407th

in world rankings with second place

Even though neither of them played last week, the gap between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson at the top of the world rankings has come down to just 0.2 points - the closest it has ever been between them.
Woods plays the third event of his comeback at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Bay Hill this week. If he fails to finish in the top two Mickelson, not in action again, would then have a chance to topple him at next week's Houston Open.
Retief Goosen's victory in the Transitions Championship lifts him from 39th to 22nd, while Argentina's Estanislao Goya is up from 195th to 99th after winning the Madeira Islands Open.
There is an even bigger leap for runner-up Kincardine's Callum Macaulay, who birdied the last six holes and eight of the last nine. Last year's Scottish amateur champion, who has been a professional for only four months, improves from 1,009th to 407th.

Wagner calls the tune in Colombia

FROM PAUL SYMES
European Challenge Tour Press Officer
Teenage sensation Alan Wagner capped a day to remember for Argentine golf when he clinched his maiden Challenge Tour title at the Club Colombia Masters presentado por Samsung.
Hours after his compatriot Estanislao Goya – who graduated from the Challenge Tour last year – had registered his breakthrough European Tour victory at the Madeira Islands Open BPI – Portugal, Wagner entered the winner’s enclosure for the first time at Country Club de Bogotá in Bogotá, Colombia.
On a dramatic final day when the lead changed hands several times and torrential rain led to a two-hour suspension in the afternoon, Wagner eventually emerged triumphant after signing for a round of 68 to close on 13 under par.
That left the 19 year old, whose winner’s cheque for US$32,000 catapulted him to the top of the Challenge Tour Rankings, one shot clear of his nearest challenger, overnight leader Edoardo Molinari of Italy.
Wagner flew out of the blocks with three birdies in his first four holes to surge to the top of the leaderboard at the expense of Molinari, who in contrast started his level par round of 72 with a bogey.
France’s Julien Guerrier, a former British amateur champion, soon overhauled the Argentine with five birdies in his opening ten holes, but an eagle at the 13th hole – allied to a bogey at the 15th for the Frenchman – saw Wagner regain control, and it was a lead he would never relinquish, despite a late rally by Molinari.
Wagner said: “I can’t believe it’s actually happened. The key for me today was to try to not get too anxious and stay focused, especially with the rain delay. I tried not to think about winning the tournament and what it would mean, but now that I have I’m in dreamland. And for my close friend Estanisloa [Goya] to win on The European Tour on the same day makes it extra special.
“Now I hope to play a full season on the Challenge Tour, and hopefully if I play well enough I can one day follow him onto The European Tour. But that’s for another day – for now, I’m just going to enjoy the moment.”
Guerrier finished in third place on 11 under par, one shot ahead of Argentina’s Julio Zapata and England’s Jamie Moul, who climbed from 20th place at the start of play to a tie for fifth after his round of 66, the lowest of the day.

Lehman fades, Goosen

wins for seventh time

on United States Tour

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
South African Retief Goosen achieved the seventh US Tour victory of his career in Tampa Bay on Sunday.
The 40-year-old, pictured above, won the Transitions Championship by one from Charles Howell and Brett Quigley on the same Copperhead course at the Palm Beach, Florida Innisbrook Resort where he captured the 2003 Chrysler Championship.
Having chipped in for birdie at nine, a 17ft eagle putt on the 575yd 11th proved to be the decisive blow as two-time US Open champion Goosen ended four years without a victory in America.
From one behind, he went one ahead - and although Howell caught him with his third birdie in four holes at the 14th, the American followed that with back-to-back bogeys.
Goosen, whose last title came at the Africa Open in his home country in January, failed to get up and down from sand on the 16th and found dense rough by the 17th green.
However, he played a great chip to three feet and then holed from nearly five feet at the 18th to take the $972,000 first prize.
He was round in a closing 70 for an eight-under-par aggregate of 276.
Howell and Quigley both had birdie chances on the last but missed from 25 and 24 feet respectively.
Quigley was also a joint runner-up in Puerto Rico last week and has now played 342 PGA Tour events without a victory.
Fifty-year-old Tom Lehman, seeking his first victory for nine years, led overnight but three bogeys in an outward 39 dropped him into the pack, and he was unable to fight his way back into contention.
