Short but straight Tom Lehman leads

"Transitions" into final round

Former US Ryder Cup captain and past Open champion Tom Lehman is driving the ball on average "only" 263yd in the Transitions Championship at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club, Tampa Bay, Florida.
But he is hitting almost all the fairways, getting up and down when he misses the greens and averaging 1.676 putts on each green.
All that adds up to rounds of 68, 69 and 68 for a three-round total of eight-under-par 205 and a one-shot lead going into Sunday's finale from South African Retief Goosen with another South African, Trevor Immelman among the group on 208.
FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE:
Two weeks after his 50th birthday former Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman burst into the lead at the Transitions Championship in Florida on Saturday.
Trying to become the seventh oldest winner in us PGA Tour history, Lehman fired a third-round 68 and will go into the final round on eight under par, one in front of South African Retief Goosen.
Lehman, world number one for one week only back in 1997, is currently ranked 254th and his last victory was nine years ago.
His recent form was nothing to write home about either as he came to the demanding Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead course. Prior to finishing 49th in Mexico at the start of the month he had missed five halfway cuts in a row and his last top-10 finish was in May last year at the Players Championship.
Opening rounds of 68 and 69, however, had left him in joint third place only one behind and as pacesetters Nick Watney and Steve Stricker hit trouble Lehman came storming back from a double bogey at the short fourth.
The ex-Open champion, who took five months off at the end of last season because of elbow tendinitis, birdied the next and after bogeying the eighth had four more birdies in a row from the 12th to come home in 31. He was only a foot away from an ace on the 13th.
Masters champion Trevor Immelman, who defends his only major title in just three weeks' time, had his second successive 70 to be five under and joint third with Jonathan Byrd, Australian Stuart Appleby and Charles Howell.

Macaulay, Drysdale share 10th

place in Madeira Islands Open

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Estanislao Goya will take a three-stroke advantage into Sunday's final round of the Madeira Islands Open BPI - Portugal at Porto Santo Golfe after compiling a two under par 69 in difficult conditions.
The Argentinian 20-year-old started the day a shot behind overnight leader Michael Hoey, but took advantage of his rivals’ slip-ups to move to eight under after three rounds.
Goya, who won the Tour de las Americas Order of Merit last year before graduating from the European Challenge Tour, is the latest Argentinian to burst onto the European Tour scene following the path set by compatriots Rafa Echenique and Andres Romero.
“I played great with the short game and then putted great as well and I think that was really the key,” he said.
“It wasn’t easy to hit the greens in regulation, so it was important to make the putts. I just tried to keep the double bogeys off the card because they can take you out of contention quickly sometimes. It was very important to stay patient and I managed to do that.”
Goya bogeyed the fourth but made amends instantly with a birdie 2 into the wind at the next.
A great putt at the sixth secured a birdie 4 and he picked up further shots at the 11th and 14th, with another dropped shot coming in between at the 13th. After his round Goya admitted that a repeat performance in the final round may be enough for a first European Tour title.
“I have to be the same as today – be patient and committed to every shot,” he added. “That is the way that I have been playing all week and it has worked well for me so far.”
Ireland’s Damien McGrane moved into second on five under after signing for a round of 70.
Last year’s Volvo China Open winner dropped shots at the second and fifth but picked off four birdies with only one bogey after that to hold on to Goya’s coattails.
“I think that was probably the toughest day we have had – maybe Thursday was as bad – but I finished one under par and I am happy with that,” said the 37 year old.
“I threw away a few shots early on, but on a day like today that is going to happen. I feel confident in myself and I am playing well – I have a good chance, we’ll see what happens. The course is playing tough but fair and you have to be creative and improvise around the greens because the short game is the thing that is keeping us all hanging in there.”
Spain’s Carlos Rodiles produced a level par round of 71 to move into third place on four under, with Hoey back in fourth after a 75 left him three under for the week.

SCOTSWATCH: Rookie Callum Macaulay produced one of his best rounds so far on the European Tour - 67 which hoisted him up the leaderboard and into a share of 10th place on 215, the same mark as compatriot David Drysdale who had a 72.
Scott Drummond and Richie Ramsay both went backwards in the third round. Drummond, after a pair of 71s, came off the rails with a 76 for 218. Ramsay has scored 73, 74 and 78 for 225.

Colombia Masters tees off European Challenge Tour

Eagle helps McArthur start

final round in jt 20th place

Former Scottish amateur champion Andrew McArthur from Windyhill goes into the final round of the Colombia Masters at Bogota Country Club - the first event of the 2009 European Challenge Tour - in a tie for 20th place on four-under-par 212.
Andrew, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, has scored consistently so far over the par-72 course - 71, 70 and 70 - including an eagle 3 at the fifth and birdies t the fourth, 11th and 17th alongside bogeys at the third, 10th and 12th.Molinari takes charge in Colombia
PAUL SYMES (European Challenge Tour Press Officer) writes:
A final hole birdie saw Edoardo Molinari establish a three-shot lead on the penultimate day of the Club Colombia Masters presentado por Samsung and put the Italian in sight of clinching his third Challenge Tour title.
Molinari, who won the inaugural Club Colombia Masters in 2007 and later added the Tusker Kenya Open, has made a return to the Challenge Tour in a bid to revitalise a career which had promised so much after his spectacular US Amateur Championship in 2005.
And the 28 year old is on course to get his second Challenge Tour campaign off to the perfect start by claiming the US$32,000 first prize.
Molinari goes into the final day on 12 under par, three shots clear of American Dan Olsen and the Argentine duo of Alan Wagner and Julio Zapata, with Frenchman Julien Guerrier one shot further back on eight under par.
The Italian opened his round of 68 with a bogey, but soon rallied with four birdies on the front nine, before adding a further two on the back nine which cancelled out dropped shots at the 10th and 11th holes.
But it was his eagle 3 on the 18th hole which really saw the Italian take command of the US$200,000 tournament, which is co-sanctioned by the Challenge Tour and the Tour de las Americas.
Molinari said: “Today on the front nine I was unable to get the distance on the long putts, and I three-putted twice. Then I missed a couple of shots, and paid with bogeys on the 10th and 11th holes.
“But from that point on, I played extremely well – just as I did on the front nine yesterday. It was great to finish with an eagle on the 18th hole to open a three stroke lead going into tomorrow. I have a very good chance of winning if I keep playing as I have done over the first three days.”
Englishman Rob Harris compiled the lowest round of the day, his 66 moving him to a share of sixth place alongside Chile’s Mark Tullo on seven under par.

Jim Furyk loses it with a second-round

78 in Transitions Championship

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Nick Watney and Steve Stricker share the halfway lead at the Transitions Championship in Florida after first-round pace-setter Jim Furyk had a complete nightmare of a second day.
While Watney and Stricker, both of whom have finished runner-up to Phil Mickelson in the past month, improved two strokes on their opening 69s, Furyk, pictured right, crashed to a 78, his worst round on the US PGA Tour for nearly two years.
The world No 11, who shot seven birdies in his first-day 65, did not manage a single sub-par figure one on his return to the Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead course and, after five bogeys, put the seal on a day to forget by double-bogeying the short 17th.
Watney was second to Mickelson at last week's WGC-CA Championship, while Stricker, also now six under par, bogeyed the last hole to lose by one as well at the Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles.
They go into the weekend one in front of fellow Americans Jonathan Byrd, 50-year-old former US Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman, Charles Howell, Troy Matteson, J J Henry and Joe Ogilvie, Australian Stuart Appleby and South African Retief Goosen.
Byrd reached eight under after 11 holes but then bogeyed the 12th, 13th and 18th.
Stricker, who in stark contrast birdied three of his last six holes, said: "I didn't putt particularly well but I didn't have a blemish on the scorecard, which is always a good thing - especially around here.
"I made some dumb mistakes yesterday (Thursday) and I tried to clean that up and I did."

Chapchai sets 72-hole record of 32

under par 256 for 11-shot victory

PRESS RELEASE ISSUE BY THE ASIAN TOUR
New Delhi: Thailand’s Chapchai Nirat left his closest rivals in awe when he stormed home to victory with a record-breaking five-under-par 67 at the US$300,000 SAIL Open today.
The three-time Asian Tour winner, who had earlier set a 54-hole record of 27-under-par has gone on to re-establish a new 72-hole record on the Asian Tour by closing with a 32-under-par 256 total at the Classic Golf Resort.
India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar, who had an outside chance of upsetting the big-hitting Thai after starting the day eight shots behind Chapchai, had to settle for a share of second place when he posted a 70 to tie with Australia’s Richard Moir on 267 total.
Thailand’s Thammanoon Srirot, South Africa’s Keith Horne and New Zealand’s Mark Purser are tied for fourth on matching 269s while Australia’s Chris Gaunt and Thailand’s Wisut Artjanawat ended their Indian campaign in tied-seventh on 270.
The spotlight once again shone brightly on the Thai stand-out who produced a bogey-free grandstand finish that was highlighted by five birdies.
“I was confident from the very start today. This win has given me a lot of confidence and I think I will now be able to take this momentum forward and probably win two to three more tournaments this year,” said Chapchai.
“My target was just to win and I did not think of the record so there was no pressure during the final birdie putt which helped me break the record,” added the newly-crowned Sail Open champion, whose score this week is believed to be one of the lowest scores ever recorded in the world for a four-round tournament.
When Chapchai started to make the turn in two-under and extending his lead over Bhullar to 10 shots, the question among the galleries was not about who was going to win the tournament but rather the number of shots Chapchai would win the tournament by.
“Chapchai just played some fabulous golf through the week. He’s been hitting it so well and doesn’t seem to feel any pressure,” said Bhullar.
Bhullar was hoping to create an upset after trailing Chapchai by eight shots at the start of the day.
However, his hopes of a maiden breakthrough on the Asian Tour faded after he could only manage four birdies against two bogeys on a day where Chapchai was simply at the top of his game.
Second-placed Moir was also left to applaud the heroics of Chapchai.
“It’s an outstanding effort. I don’t have any words, it’s unreal. His monstrous drives made it seem like he’s playing on a par-3 course,” said Moir.
Scots exile Ross Bain finished 17-under-par (271) and that earned him "only" a share of ninth position.
