Sam Torrance wins Barbados Seniors

Open by four shots in the end

From Steve Todd, European Senior Tour Press Officer
Sam Torrance sealed a stunning week in the Caribbean by capturing his 11th European Senior Tour title in the DGM Barbados Open today, safely negotiating a tricky final round for a four- stroke victory over Paraguay’s Angel Franco.
Having sent records tumbling with some scintillating golf over the first two days, Torrance found the going a little tougher in his final round but had more than enough in the tank to see the job through.
The 2002 Ryder Cup captain started the final day with a commanding nine-stroke advantage following opening rounds of 65 and 63 – the new course record at Royal Westmoreland – but he dropped his first shot in 43 holes on the eighth.
He carded three more bogeys and two birdies en route to a two-over-par final round of 74 but with Franco only able to post a 69, Torrance’s 14 under par total of 202 saw him comfortably crowned the 10th new winner of the DGM Barbados Open on its 10th anniversary.
The Scot admitted the magnitude of his overnight lead had left him unsure about how to approach the decisive final 18 holes but he said he was delighted with his second win in three appearances, following his victory in the 2008 season-ending OKI Castellón Open España – Senior Tour Championship.
“I survived,” said the 55 year old. “It feels fantastic to capture my 11th Senior Tour title and to win again.
“It was a tough day out there, a lot trickier than the first two days but I got over the line. I guess it can’t be horrible taking a nine-shot lead into the final round but I had never really been in that position before so I didn’t quite know what to do.
“I was quite negative really. I played for par a lot but in the end I just got the job done. I did all the hard work during the first two days. I played magnificently on both of those days. I don’t think anyone could have played better than I did in those two rounds.
Torrance’s victory continued his run of winning in each of the last six seasons on the Senior Tour and moved him up a place to sixth on the all time Senior Tour career money list, which is led by England’s Carl Mason.
After also finishing tied sixth in the season opening Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters presented by The Stapleford Forum, Torrance has made the perfect start in his quest to win back the John Jacobs Trophy he won in both 2005 and 2006, with the €25,234 first prize moving him to the top of the Senior Tour Order of Merit.
“The plan before the beginning of the season was to go for the Order of Merit, absolutely, and it’s been a great start to the year” he said. “I’m playing in the next event in Mallorca and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Franco equalled his best Senior Tour finish, set in the Jersey Senior Classic and Russian Seniors Open last year. He finished four shots ahead of third place Mike Harwood of Australia, who was making only his second Senior Tour appearance after a break from competitive golf of more than ten years.
Defending champion Anglo-Scot Bill Longmuir carded his third consecutive 71 to finish tied seventh with Prestwick's Ross Drummond, Irishman Des Smyth and Englishman Martin Poxon.
Welshman Ian Woosnam, the 2008 Senior Tour No 1, closed with a round of 73 to finish in a share of 27th on six over par 222 in his first appearance of the new season although he had been competing on the United States Champions Tour.

Drummond, Drysdale, Ramsay, Macaulay make the cut

'Chilled out' Michael Hoey leads Madeira

Islands Open after 66 for 135

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
A new "chilled out" attitude helped Northern Ireland's Michael Hoey continue his bid for a first European Tour title today.
The 30-year-old former British Amateur champion, pictured, added a five-under-par 66 to his opening 69 to reach halfway on seven under par 135 at the Madeira Islands Open BPI-Portugal on Porto Santo.
At the halfway stage Hoey is one ahead of three players, former Ryder Cup Swede Joakim Haeggman (70-136), Irishman Michael McGeady (67-136) and, from Argentina, Estanislao Goya (68-136).
Back in 2001 and just 21 at the time, Hoey followed his win in the British amateur championship at Tuwith an 11th place finish in the Scottish Open, then helped a Walker Cup team, also featuring Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell and Nick Dougherty, to victory in America.
They have all gone on to taste Tour success, but since missing the cut at the 2002 Masters by a single stroke Hoey has made six trips to the qualifying school.
Last November was the first time he came through it, but two months ago he was joint second behind Retief Goosen in the Africa Open and now is hoping to go one better.
"I'm taking a more relaxed view and it's paying off so far," he told European Tour Radio. "You can put yourself under too much pressure in this game and I just told myself to chill out basically."
Haeggman and Irishman Damien McGrane were the overnight leaders, but McGrane double-bogeyed the short fifth in his 72 to drop back to fifth place on 138.
Compatriot Michael McGeady, like Hoey a winner on last season's Challenge Tour, had moved into third place on five under par with nine holes remaining, while McGrane was in the clubhouse on four under along with Carlos Rodiles.
The Spaniard was round in 65, but that stood as a course record for the new Seve Ballesteros lay-out for only a few minutes as England's Richard Bland improved 14 strokes on his opening 78 to get back to level par.
SCOTSWATCH: Only four of the 10 Scottish entries survived the cut which fell at four-over-par 148. Callum Macaulay, glad to get back on the European Tour after a "holiday" he did not want, made it right on the deadline with a pair of 74s. Scott Drummond is the leading Scot with a pair f 71s for 142. David Drysdale also had a pair, of 72s, for 144 and Richie Ramsay made it with a shot to spare with 73-74 for 147.
Scots who failed included Steven O'Hara by a single shot with 74 for 149; Andrew Coltart who sagged to a 76 for 150 and Graham Gordon who deteriorated by five shots to a 79 for 153.
Full marks to former Scottish amateur champion George Murray for slashing 11 shots off his dismal Day 1 effort with a 72 but, of course, 153 was always going to be plenty over the cut-off paoint.
Peter Whiteford, who also saddled himself with a first-round 83, had a 77 for 160 while Chris Doak will be bitterly disappointed that he could do no better than 79-82 for 161

Chapchai leads by eight strokes at

27 under par in New Delhi

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ASIAN TOUR
New Delhi, March 20: Thailand’s Chapchai Nirat continued his breathtaking run of form with a seven-under-par 65 to take a massive eight strokes lead on 27-under-par 189 total at the US$300,000 SAIL Open on Friday.
The two-time Asian Tour winner heads into the final round with a commanding lead over second-placed Gaganjeet Bhullar of India, whose dream of securing his maiden title on the Asian Tour is still very much alive after firing a 66 for a 197 total.
South Africa’s Keith Horne together with Philippines’ Antonio Lascuna and Australia’s Richard Moir are two shots behind Bhullar in tied-third after posting matching 199s at the Classic Golf Resort.
New Zealand’s Mark Purser carded a 72 to lie in fourth place on 200 while Scotland’s Ross Bain and Thailand’s Prom Meesawat and Wisut Artjanawat are a further shot back in tied-fifth on matching 201s.
The play of the day once again belonged to Thai standout Chapchai, who has now established a new 54-hole scoring record and is three strokes away from setting a new 72-hole record on the Asian Tour.
The Asian Tour record for the lowest winning total was 29-under-par set by Ernie Els at the 2003 Johnnie Walker Classic in Perth.
Chapchai got off to a steady start with seven straight pars followed by a bogey on 11th. However, his game quickly came to life starting with a birdie on 12th.
The Thai star then went on a birdie blitz, closing his round with five straight birdies from the 14th to the 18th.
“I am extremely happy with my performance, though a little disappointed that I could not shoot another 62,” said Chapchai.
“I expect the pin positions to be tougher tomorrow. I’d love to break the world record of 32-under for four rounds. I’m really enjoying the game at this stage of my career and relish every challenge,” added the big-hitting Thai.
With Chapchai seemingly running away with the event, Bhullar is now the only player with an outside chance of narrowing the gap and creating an upset.
The young Indian was four-under through 13 holes, with four birdies and no bogeys. And with Chapchai two-under for the day at that stage, the gap between the two Asian Tour professionals was down to five shots.
But with the Thai leader closing with five birdies and Bhullar only managing two at the closing stages, it meant that the pole position on the leaderboard after the third round would still be retained by Chapchai.
“I am a little disappointed to miss about three putts within 10 feet today. This is a course for the taking. I have not been able to take full advantage of the par-fives,” said Bhullar, who had just one birdie from the four par-fives in the third round after missing out on a birdie only once on the par-fives during the first two days.
“The conditions were a little tricky at the start of the round as I had to deal with headwind for the first three holes. But I attacked the pin all day and made 16 regulations for the third consecutive day,” added the Indian.
Pre-tournament favourite Jyoti Randhawa is in tied-40th place after recording a 68 for a 208 total.

Paul Lawrie Junior Jug Tournament launched

The Paul Lawrie Foundation Junior Jug tournament has been added the Scottish Golf Union and Scottish Ladies Golfing Association programme of events for Under-18 year olds in the new domestic season.
It will feature qualifying events at Nairn Dunbar, Inchmarlo, Downfield, Craigielaw, Kingsfield, Cowglen and Southerness, with the top four handicap and scratch players, either male or female, qualifying for the final at Dundonald Links on September 5.
Lawrie, who made the announcement at an SGU academy day at The Carrick on Loch Lomond, said: "It is vital for young players to gain as much competitive experience as they can in quality events. I am pleased to be part of the ongoing development of Scottish golfers."

Gateway Tour standards are high

Big-hitting Gunn is four under par after

36 holes but still only 24th equal

Dornoch exile Jimmy Gunn used his long-hitting powers to plunder the par-5s for a three-under-par 69 in the second round of the Gateway Tour's Desert Spring tournament at Arrowhead Golf Club, Arizona.
Gunn had an eagle at the 511yd second hole and birdies at the long sixth, the long 10th, the par-4 15th and the long 18th. He came home in three-under-par 33, have earlier bogeyed the fourth, fifth and seventh.
But you need to play well to earn a crust on the Gateway Tour. Gunn's scores of 71 and 69 for four-under-par 140 have him in "only" joint 24th place behind leader Drew Stultz who is on 11 under par 133 with scores of 65 and 68.
Stultz leads by one from fellow Americans Nathan Ashley (69-65) on 134 and Josh Persons (66-69) on 135.
Gunn has earned $8,369 from eight tournaments this year, having missed the cut four times.
In his first-round 71, he had a double bogey 6 at the 11th and bogeys at the short third and 16th. He compensated with birdies at the long second, the short eighth, the long 10th, the 12th and the short 14th in halves of 35 and 36.
