By the left ... it's Mickelson by one

from fellow-Butch client Watney

Phil Mickelson landed his second title of the year when he held off Nick Watney at the WGC-CA Championship.
Mickelson, who had been treated overnight for heat exhaustion and dehydration, showed no ill effects from his visit to a hospital emergency room as he outfought fellow American and fellow client of coach Butch Harmon, Watney, over the back nine at Doral, having emerged from a see-saw battle with the world number 78 in the first half of the final round.
World number three Mickelson parred the final seven holes to complete a last-day 69 to finish at 19 under par, one shot better than his overnight co-leader Watney.
It was his first World Golf Championships victory and his 36th on the US PGA Tour, adding to his Northern Trust Open win at Riviera Country Club last month.
Jim Furyk was a strong-finishing third at 16 under par following a closing 67, with India's Jeev Milkha Singh fourth on 14 under.
England's Oliver Wilson scored his best finish on the US PGA Tour when he shot a 66 to finish in a tie for fifth place alongside Colombia's Camilo Villegas, with Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen and Thomas Aiken of South Africa tied for seventh on 12th under.
World number one Tiger Woods produced his second 68 of the weekend to finish tied for ninth with Rod Pampling of Australia and fellow American Kenny Perry at 11 under, to maintain his record of always finishing in the top 10, both in WGC stroke play events and at Doral.
Watney, level with Mickelson at the start of the day, fell one shot behind over the outward half and just could not get it back.
Rory McIlory (73 for 279) failed to make a last-day charge and it was left to Oliver Wilson to provide the focus for British interest. Wilson signed off with a six-under-par 66, one of the best scores on the last day, to finish a very creditable joint fifth on 13-under-par 275.

Mickelson one ahead of Watney

with nine holes to play

If Phil Mickelson was feeling the heat before the start of the final round of the WGC-CA Championship at Doral Resort, Miami in Florida today (see earlier report), he certainly was once the Sunday pressure started to build.
With nine holes to play, Lefty had edged ahead of his third-round co-leader, Nick Watney -- both are coached by Butch Harmon - at 19 under par to Watney's 18 under par.
Englishman Oliver Wilson made a unexpected but welcome run into joint third place over the final round and was 13 under par with two holes to play.
Tiger Woods was 11 under par after 15 holes.
Sadly, Rory McIlroy went backwards on the final day. He was -10 after 12 holes.

Third-round 80 puts Scott

Jamieson out of rain-hit

Hooters Open money

Glasgow's Scott Jamieson finished well out of the money after a disastrous third round of 80 for a share of 57th place in the rain-shortened Hooters Tour Open at Rock Barn Golf & Spa, Conover in North Carolina today.
Jamieson, after earlier rounds of 76 and 73 to beat the cut, had a double bogey 6 at the 11th, and double bogey 5s at the short 15th and short 17th in halves of 36 and 44. He had birdies at the first, fifth and eighth.
In his first round, the Scot, pictured, had a triple bogey 7 at the fifth and a double bogey 5 at the short 17th.
Florida-based Russell Knox, the Scot who is one of the leading money-winners on the Hooters Tour, did not play in this event - the last for four weeks - as he is flying back to Scotland for an eight-day break in his home-town of Inverness.
American Blaine Peffley, who played on the US college circuit as a student at Maryland University, won the $33,566 first prize by three strokes with scores of 72, 69 and 68 for seven-under-par 209.

Runner-up was Scott Stallings with 74, 67 and 71 for 212, a shot ahead of a third American, Justin Smith, with scores of 74, 67 and 71.

Joey Sindelar heading for first win on

United States Champions' Tour

American Joey Sindelar, 50, chasing his first win on the US Champions (Seniors) Tour took a big step towards breaking his duck with a second-round two-under-par 70 for 10-under 134 to lead by one shot from Don Pooley, going into the third and final round of the AT&T Champions Classic at Valencia Country Club, California.
"I'm pretty comfortable out there," Sindelar said. "I'm not trying to ignore it. I'll be excited on the first tee (Sunday) and in four hours I'll know the result. I'm looking forward to it."
Sindelar stretched his bogey-free streak to 42 holes before dropping a stroke on the par-4 fifth. He also bogeyed Nos. 8 and 10, but played the final seven holes in four under par to top the leaderboard for the second straight day.
"I'm having a bit of a fight with the front nine," Sindelar said. "It was a mess. Nothing to be proud of. I had much better ball-striking on the back nine."
Pooley shot a bogey-free 65, the best round of the day. He had only 25 putts.
"I was lost in my short game," Pooley said. "It's helped a lot. I've had very few bad days putting this year where last year I had very few good days."
Jay Haas (69) was two strokes back at eight under, Steve Thomas (66) was seven under, and Tim Simpson (69) and Bruce Lietzke (70) were another stroke behind.
Nick Price withdrew after the round. Price, eight over through 36 holes, dropped an iron on his toe in his hotel room on Thursday.

United States 1-2-3 in New Zealand Open,

Prugh wins from Piller and Herman

The New Zealand Open had an American 1-2-3 finish at Queenstown today.
Alex Prugh from Spokane won his first Nationwide Tour title, clinching it with his second eagle of the round and finishing three strokes ahead of compatriot Martin Piller with Jim Herman third at 14 under par 274.
Prugh, a 24-year-old former University of Washington student, finished with an eight-under 64 for a 19-under 269 total on The Hills course. He earned $108,000 in the event also sanctioned by the Australasian Tour
“If anything, this builds a lot of confidence for me,” Prugh said. “The last time I felt nerves like that might have been at the Pacific Coast Amateur in 2005, but there were no leaderboards there and we were playing in front of 30 people, not the thousands we had out here. I definitely thought I’d be more nervous coming down the stretch.”
Prugh, who joined Corey Pavin (1984 and 1985) as the only Americans champions in the event first played in 1907, made a 25-foot eagle putt on the par-5 17th to take a four-stroke lead. He had also eagled the par-4 eighth, holing a pitching wedge.
“That one really kick-started my round,” Prugh said about the unexpected eagle on No. 8. “I thought, now we can really go.”
He had four birdies in a back-nine 30, and played the final 10 holes in eight under par. Prugh took the lead with a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-3 16th, then wrapped it up with the eagle on 17.
“I hit a great 3-wood in there. I knew there was plenty of green and grass to the right and the only place I couldn’t miss was left,” Prugh said. “That putt was uphill, breaking on a tier. I played it about 4 feet outside. When it got close, I saw it was dead centre.”
Piller, the third-round leader, shot a 68. The 23-year-old former Texas A&M player was making his fourth career Nationwide Tour start.
“It’s a little disappointing that I didn’t get it done, but I gave it everything I had,” Piller said. “I didn’t leave anything in the bag. When you shoot 64 like that, you’re going to win most tournaments. My hat’s off to Alex.”
Welshman Richard Johnson aced the par-4 15th, only the second hole-in-one on a par 4 in Nationwide Tour history. Johnson’s hole-in-one on the 347-yard hole vaulted him from 10 under to 13 under and just two shots off the lead at the time. He bogeyed the next two holes and finished with a 70 to tie for 10th at 11 under.
“I just aimed for the gap in the traps and smashed it as hard as I could,” Johnson said. “I figured if I hit it really good I’d have a chance to get it in that back corner. I never saw it. It’s too far but I heard the crowd go nuts.”
Johnson will receive a pallet of beer from tournament sponsor Heineken, or 125 dozen bottles, which multiplies out to 1,500 bottles.“I wonder if it will last more than a couple of weeks,” Johnson said. “I didn’t know how much a pallet was. I just knew it was more than a case.”

Day and Bradley four ahead of Puerto

Rico Open field at Trump International

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Rising Australian star Jason Day and 42-year-old American Michael Bradley moved clear of the field in the third round of the Puerto Rico Open at Rio Grande.
The chasing pack is four behind after 21-year-old Day carded a two under par 70 and Bradley, playing his first event of the season after losing his card and failing to get it back at the qualifying school, a fine 68 in difficult conditions at the Trump International Golf Club whose course is a par-72 of some 7,500yd.
Eight players share third place on eight-under - Americans Cliff Kresge, Bryce Molder, Jay Williamson, Brett Quigley, Omar Uresti, Kent Jones and Bart Bryant, plus Australian left-hander Greg Chalmers.
Bradley, who had the second of the US PGA Tour victories 11 years ago, birdied four of the first six holes to turn in 32 and after a bogey on the 12th collected his fifth birdie of the round at the 17th.
Former Australian and world junior champion Day had three birdies himself on the front nine and his only dropped shot came at the 14th.
Day had shared the halfway lead with compatriot Matt Jones, but the 28-year-old from Sydney had a nightmare run after grabbing an eagle on the long fifth.
Jones double-bogeyed the next, bogeyed five of the following six holes, had another double bogey on the 13th and let another stroke go at the next.
That was 10 over par for nine holes, but he did at least pick up two birdies on the closing stretch for a 79 that dropped him to 37th.
England's Greg Owen, 12th overnight, managed only a 77 to slump to joint 58th on one under, while German Alex Cejka signed for a 74 that sent him down from eighth to 17th on five under.
American Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin is on the same mark following a 73 and Rocco Mediate, beaten by Tiger Woods in a play-off for the US Open last June and still seeking his first top 10 finish since then, struggled to a 75 that left him alongside Jones and 18-year-old Hawaiian Tadd Fujikawa.
