Peter Sewell wins Tom Galloway Trophy

By KEITH LIDDLE
Secretary, Edinburgh & East of Scotland Alliance
It seemed very fitting that today we were playing for the Tom Galloway Trophy which was won by Peter Sewell (West Linton) with a net 71 (better back nine) in tricky, windy conditions.
In the scratch section Terry Mathieson (King's Acre) and David Patrick (Elie) shared top spot with one under par scores of 71. Terry had six birdies (1st, 6th, 7th, 12th, 17th and 18th) but dropped five shots.
David was three over par after 14 holes, but finished with a run of birdie, par, birdie, eagle. Andrew Oldcorn (King's Acre) was third with level par 72 and Scott Catlin and Neil Colquhoun shared fourth place on one over.
The handicap section was very close too. Andrew Rothney (Deer Park) (scratch), Ian Fyfe (Musselburgh) (2) and Peter Sewell (West Linton) (8) shared the lead with net 71s. In fourth equal place on 72 were Michael Louden (4) Glencorse, Colin Rae (7) Pumpherston, Alan Devlin (13) Pumpherston and Bryan Peterson (7) Dunfermline.
Thank you to everyone who helped celebrate the late Tom Galloway's life, with a big thank you to Tom's family and Dunfermline Golf Club for allowing us to be part of the day.

Tom Galloway laid to rest
at Douglas Bank Cemetry

Tom Galloway's funeral was held today at Limekilns Parish Church and he was laid to rest at the Douglas Bank Cemetery. His family and friends gathered afterwards at Dunfermline Golf Club, to celebrate his long and eventful life.
Edinburgh & East of Scotland Alliance members helped celebrate Tom's life in a couple of ways. At the funeral service and burial we were represented by a number of its senior members. At the insistence of his family, members took part in the re-scheduled E&EoS outing at Dunfermline Golf Club.
Colin Farquharson writes:
Tom told me he was 98 when he made the presentations at last year's Scottish Alliance championship, hosted by Moray Golf Club at Lossiemouth.
He went round in 110 and 106 in the first two rounds but stopped after 11 holes of his final round.
"It was a bit wet and I was feeling tired. I think it's the first time I've ever had a No Return in a Scottish Alliance," said Tom.
He was a remarkable man who was still as full of vitality and love of golf in his 90s as he was when he wore a younger man's clothes.

Tain winner Ronnie Taylor is back in

North Alliance Trophy contention

By ROBIN WILSON
Wick's Ronnie Taylor, with a winning scratch score of 73 at Tain, has significantly moved back into contention for a North Golf Alliance trophy he has won six times in the past eleven years since introduced.
While local back marker and current scratch aggregate trophy leader Munro Ferries was have one of these days he will quickly want to forget, a short game that deserted him and eventually a “No Return,” Taylor repeated his last home fixture winning score of 73 with another 73 from halves of 38 and 35.
The Wick +1 handicapper's game was a bit ragged to begin with, a four-over-par outward 38 where the normal outward par drops to 34 during the winter months when the second hole is played as a par-3. He fell easily to bogeys at the fourth (a penalty drop from bushes) and the seventh, eighth and ninth holes before rediscovering his +1 rating to match the inward par of 35. The previous multi-holder of the Scratch Quaich birdied the long 13th but immediately gave the stroke back at the next hole for his card of 73 but his inward count of 35 relegated local Steven Holmes to second place after Holmes was already in the clubhouse with a similar score.
Holmes posted his 73 from halves of 37 and 36. He did not secure his par-3 at the second hole but he did birdie the short eighth to better Taylor's outward count by one. Then, nearing the end of his round, he took a bogey 4 at the 17th to raise his inward count to one over par 36.
Ferries' Quaich aggregate total remains at 284, but with Taylor being able to replace his counting 86 at Golspie last November, in stormy conditions, his 73 on Sunday reduced his total by 13 shots to 292 and he is now equal second with Bryan Ronald (Thurso) who came in with the next best score of the day, a 74, that took three shots from his previous total of 295.
Four-handicapper Ronald also had an "iffy" outward count of 39 but recovered his card with an inward 35 after birdies at the 12th and 15th cancelled out his double bogey 5 at the 17th.
Holmes had the consolation of leading the Class 1 handicap returns, his gross 73 reducing to net 68 and winning by two from Mike Keay (Tarbat). Keay's first 17 holes were all 3s, 4s and 5s and only at the final hole did he disrupt this steady stuff with a double bogey 6.
It has taken from Durness last October where he won the Class 1 section to Tain on Sunday to get over a winter of golf disruption from a niggling back strain but Wick's Ron Barker showed his back returned to strength with a gross 77, net 70, to take third place in Class 1 handicap, beaten for second on a better last nine by Tarbat greenkeeper Mike Keay.
Doubling up to local winner Holmes in Class 1 was the Class 2 winner Ali Melville, his net 77 from handicap 12 good enough in a poorly attended section of only eight. With a shot more and in only his second outing of the year there was a golf ball for Steve MacKay (Durness).
Brian Ronald was upgraded to second scratch when Holmes earned first handicap in Class 1 but the Thurso member's net 70 also reduced his nett aggregate by three and brought him level with MacKintosh Salver leader, Reay's Grant Maxwell on 276. Seann Sutherland (Bonar Bridge) remaining on 277
Maxwell has the advantage of a home fixture on Sunday in his bid to win the MacKintosh Salver. Results:

LAST MAN IN - CHRIS ROBB REWRITES

THE STORY OF DHR ALLIANCE!

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

You think I would be too long in the tooth to write my golf reports before the last man has handed in his card. You would be wrong!
I did it again today at Banff. I had finished my story on my laptop in the clubhouse about Anthony Bews heading a field of 104 in today's North-east Alliance competition at Duff House Royal .... when in came the Scottish schoolboys champion, Chris Robb (Inchmarlo), the very last man to finish ... and he grabbed, metaphorically speaking, the £100 first prize voucher with a par-matching round of 68
Eighteen-year-old Robb, who plays off +1, hopes to gain a golf scholarship to an American college either this autumn or in 2010. With the CV he is building up, that should not be a problem.
Robb, pictured above today at Duff House Royal, laid the foundation of his score, which had halves of 33 and 35, on a day when nobody found the 6161yd course easy with birdies at the first, second and fourth. He added a fourth and final birdie by getting home in two shots at the par-5 12th and two-putting for a 4.
Shots dropped at the third, seventh, 15th and 17th cancelled out his
birdies but it was a good effort by the tall youngster.
And so Murcar Links +2 amateur Anthony Bews finished second for the second week in a row, this time on his own. Remember he had a triple bogey 7 at the 14th over his home course last week, which cost him certain victory and saw him finish in a multi-tie for the runner-up position.

Bews, who works in the pro's shop at Murcar Links but is not an assistant pro, birdied the fourth and fifth before bogeying the ninth, 11th and 18th. He had halves of 33 and 36.

Brian Nicholson (Auchmill), Stewart Finnie (Caledonian) and Brian Ritchie (Inverallochy) finished joint third on the 70 mark. Nicholson had halves of 35, Ritchie 36-34 and Finnie 34-36.
Both Ritchie and Finnie had double bogey 5s at a short hole, Ritchie at the sixth and Finnie at the 16th.

TODAY'S NE ALLIANCE TALKING POINT

Where have all the pros gone?

Colin Farquharson writes:

Talking with NE Alliance secretary Ron Menzies today in the Duff House Royal clubhouse and we were reminiscing about the days when the club professionals and assistants used to dominate the weekly prizelists.

Not so now. The fact that so few of them actually PLAY in the Alliances these days means they seldom figure in the top 10.

"I think full-time amateurs like today's winner Chris Robb and David Law actually play a lot more competitive golf than any of the North-east club professionals - and the Alliance pendulum of power, if you want to call it that, has certainly swung over to the amateurs in recent years," says Ron Menzies.

(Colin Farquharson writing again): I played in the North-east Alliances back in the 1960s when almost all of the club professionals in the area turned out for the Wednesday competitions. Now, you could draw up a lengthy list of the clubs whose professionals/assistants simply do not play, starting at Ballater, working your way down the Dee Valley to Aboyne ... Banchory is a notable exception ... Deeside? Well, Frank Coutts no longer plays, more the pity, and his asisstant, Nick Reid, who did support the Alliances, has left Frank's staff.

Would doubling the weekly top prize to £200 change the situation? Probably not. Perhaps we should rejoice that we have young and very good amateurs gracing the North-east Alliance scene instead of bemoaning the lack of professional competition for them.

Stenson stands to lose a lot of money in

Stanford Financial bank account

Henrik Stenson, the Swede who is ranked No 6 in the world, has revealed that he is one of thousands of investors who have money frozen in a Stanford Financial bank account in Antigua. Stanford, which title-sponsors the US PGA Tour’s annual Memphis event and the LPGA’s season-ending tournament, was accused February 17 of an $8 billion investment fraud.
In the days since, investors around the world have been scrambling to determine the extent of the damage to their holdings.
Stenson signed a three-year endorsement contract with Stanford in June 2008. At about that time, he also transferred a considerable amount of his personal wealth into a Stanford bank account.
“Not all my money,” Stenson said of the amount he has invested at Stanford. “But I have quite a big part of my own savings and investments with them.”
Stenson’s agent, Johan Elliot at Sportyard, has been in contact with Stanford Financial representatives in Europe, but Stenson said they have been given few answers.
“I don’t know anything more than I read in the papers,” Stenson said. “So it’s obviously not a happy situation for a whole lot of people.”
According to another player agent who was approached by Stanford to sponsor two of his players, the Stanford sponsorship deals included putting money back into a newly opened Stanford Bank account, similar to what Stenson did as part of his deal.
However, Stenson took it to another level by investing his own money.
“I’ve heard some interesting stories, especially in the last few days with Stanford,” Trevor Immelman said when the Stanford news broke.
“A lot of guys had money with Stanford, so hopefully they can recoup that.”

Loch Ness Juniors clinch league win

By NEIL HAMPTON
Spring Week 7
Fairways Target Golf Leagues
The Juniors sealed the league win with three games still to go with a comfortable win over Fairways. The Juniors remain unbeaten and have been the form team from day one and will go into the play-offs brimming with confidence. However the battle for the second play-off spot is hotting up as three teams are still in the running.
Trilight had their most important win in beating the Specialists, which drew them level on points with their opposition. Fairways' loss leaves them two points adrift of these two but with them all playing each other during the run-in, anyone of them could still clinch second spot.
At the other end of the table BM Trucks gained a vital win over fellow sufferers, the Neverwillbees, who put up a valiant effort, despite only having one player!
Results:
Fairways 45 - 82 Loch Ness Juniors.
Specialists 27 - 39 Trilight.
BMTrucks 63 - 38 The Neverwillbees.

The end of season split has taken place and now the top four will play each other once more, as will the bottom four.
There was only one crunch game as most places had been decided last week but in the winner takes all clash, Raigmore Motel beat Patsy's Pets to secure the final top four spot and consign the Pets to the basement battle.
The week's top score went to a bottom four team as the Muirton Marvels turned on the style against Fairhurst Fore who had compiled one of their best scores of the season.
In a top four clash the Leadbetters returned to form and drew first blood over Darren's Dazzlers who will be out for revenge in a fortnight's time.
The Coastguards remained in second place and on course for the play-offs with an easy win over the Sainties.
Results:
Fairhurst 36 - 72 Muirton Marvels.
Luckless Leadbetters 60 - 48 Darren's Dazzlers.
Patsy's Pets 39 - 51 Raigmore Motel.
Coastguards 46 - 19 The Sainties.

HOW THEY STAND
1 Loch Ness Juniors 7-14.
2 Trilight 7-8.
3 Specialists 7-8.
4 Fairways 7-6.
5 BM Trucks 7-4.
6 The Neverwillbees 7-2.

1 Luckless Leadbetters 7-12.
2 Coastguards 7-10.
