Paul Brookes and Ewan Cameron Bahrain-

bound with competitive spirit

Fife professional Paul Brookes flies out to Bahrain next week looking to better the performance of friend Kenny Hutton in the grand final of the Gulf Air International Pro-Captain Challenge, supported by BMW.
Hutton, professional at Downfield Golf Club, Dundee, finished seventh out of nine in 2004.
Brookes hopes to improve on that when he and captain Ewan Cameron tee it up at the newly-developed Montgomerie Course at the Royal Golf Club (formerly the Riffa Club) in the Middle East.
"One of my pals Kenny Hutton went on the trip a few years ago but obviously that was before the course was re-done," he said."I am competitive and so is the captain and we are really looking forward to it.
"We are going to go out and do our best but primarily we want to enjoy ourselves and I'm sure we will."
The 42-year-old professional at Pitreavie is also looking forward to some warm weather golf.
"I've probably played three or four rounds in the last two months so I don't know how I'm going to play out there but it will be good to swing a golf club in the sun and warm," he added.
"You tend to loosen up a bit when the weather is warm - at this time of year we usually have woolly hats and three or four layers with waterproofs and mittens."
Cameron, who celebrates his 42nd birthday on the first day of competition, is unfazed by the prospect of playing in the tournament.
"It is a great opportunity to go and experience some golf in a part of the world that we’re probably unlikely to go to," said the five-handicapper."I guess for most of us just getting on the trip was effectively the prize but we all play golf with a competitive edge."
The 36-hole event at the Royal Golf Club, Riffa, takes place on February 24 and 25.
Six other pairs from the PGA regions, together with the international qualifiers and a professional and captain from the host club, are also taking part.
Gulf Air chief executive Mr Björn Näf said: “Gulf Air is delighted to be the title sponsor of the PGA International Pro-Captain Challenge and to be bringing the cream of the UK’s golfing talent to Bahrain for the grand final for the fifth year. "

CHRIS LAW WINS ON THE BACK
OF AN EAGLE AT MURCAR LINKS

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Hazlehead's Chris Law, whose younger brother David is a Scotland boy cap, stole the limelight for himself at today's North-east Golfers' Alliance meeting by heading a field of 94 at Murcar Links.
It was Chris's first win on the winter circuit and he achieved it with a two-over-par 71 in a day of miserable conditions of fog and drizzle.
Three-handicapper Law's competition-winning master stroke was an eagle 2 at the 14th where he had the good fortune to hold a full blown second shot.
In contrast, home-course player Anthony Bews, one of five players who shared second place on 72, ran up a triple-bogey 7 at the same hole - a five-shot swing that cost him victory.
The others on 73 were Don Garrett (Huntly), Stuart Murray (Newburgh), Stewart Finnie (Caledonian) and Fergus Bisset (Banchory).
