General Motors ends $7million a year
endorsement deal with Tiger Woods

US motor car manufacturing giant General Motors Corp says it will end its endorsement deal with Tiger Woods at the end of the year.
GM said in a statement today that it is looking to reduce costs, and that the world's No. 1 golfer wants more personal time as he expects his second child.
Woods has endorsed GM products around the world and has been closely tied to its Buick brand in the United States, Canada and China. He has carried the Buick brand on his golf bag since 2000, and his most recent promotion was to caddie for a contest winner for nine holes at Torrey Pines, where Woods won the U.S. Open this summer for his 14th career major.
The five-year deal, believed to be worth at least $7 million a year, was to end in 2009. Woods' agent at IMG, Mark Steinberg, said the decision to end the endorsement one year early was ''absolutely mutual.''
''It was a combination of things,'' Steinberg said. ''Tiger was looking to gain some more time, and certainly it was an opportunity for GM to reduce its spending with everything going on.''
GM's vice president for North American sales, Mark LaNeve, says the separation is the result of discussions earlier in the year and is not related to the company's campaign for $25 billion in loans from the federal government.
Buick said last week that it would be cutting back on its deal providing courtesy cars at US PGA Tour events.
Woods has carried only two logos on his bag since he turned pro in August 1996. He was with Titleist through 1999 until Buick won a bidding war for its brand on a bag that gets more television time at tournaments than any other golfer.
Woods has not played since season-ending knee surgery after winning the U.S. Open, and he is not expected to return until next year, most likely in early March depending on his recovery.
Steinberg said he would ''expect there to be some exposure on the bag'' when Woods next plays.
''I've got a few ideas, and we're in the process of working through that,'' he said.
Last year Woods also suffered the indignity of losing a sponsorship deal with American Express and this latest announcement will have been a severe blow to his pride. It will not, however, cause much consternation for his bank manager. According to Golf Digest magazine, Woods earned more than $120m (£79m) in sponsorship deals last year, and he is a constant presence at the top of "world's richest athlete" lists.

Rory McIlroy makes world
top 50 - and a place in 2009
US Masters beckons

Belfast teenager Rory McIlroy has made it into the world's top 50 for the first time. If he is still there at the end of the year, then he will be rewarded with a place in the field for the 2009 US Masters.
Nineteen-year-old McIlroy, pictured right, a professional for only 14 months, suffered his second sudden-death loss of the year Sunday. He was beaten at the second extra hole by Taiwan's Lin Wen-tang in the UBS Hong Kong open.
McIlroy insisted he is not too downhearted after narrowly missing out on his first European Tour win following the play-off defeat.
He shot a final-round five-under-par 65 to enter a three-way play-off with Lin and Italian Francesco Molinari at the Hong Kong golf club.

Tommy Armour III wins Pebble Beach
Invitational for second year in a row

Title-holder Tommy Armour III, a grandson of the "Silver Scot," three-time major winner Tommy Armour, holed a birdie putt of some 36ft on the first hole of a three-man play-off against fellow Americans Scott Simpson and Brock MacKenzie to win the Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational for the second year in a row in California.
The 49-year-old Armour, twice a winner on the US PGA Tour winner, began the day with a five-stroke lead over Rich Beem. But Armour signed off with a four-over 76 in a round that included two birdies, a double bogey and four bogeys.
That left the door open for Simpson, a former US Open title winner and MacKenzie, a former Nationwide Tour player who does not have US Tour status for 2009, to close the gap.
Simpson finished with a 70 and MacKenzie with a 67.
``I hit some shots that were close to being really good,'' said Armour, who earned $60,000 of the $300,000 purse. ``They just didn't turn out to be that good. But that's part of the inner battle of winning a golf tournament.''
Armour, the first repeat winner in the tournament's 37-year history, ended a four-year winless streak with his Callaway victory in 2007. He last won on the US PGA Tour at the Valero Texas Open in 2003, when he set the US PGA Tour tournament record of 34 under par.
``When the wind picks up at Pebble Beach it's a challenge,'' Armour said. ``It wasn't easy, but then again, winning a golf tournament is never easy.''
Simpson made a 12-foot birdie on the 18th hole to tie at 10 under. Armour missed a 24-foot birdie attempt for the win but made a 4-foot par putt to join the three-way playoff.
``I just wanted a good finish,'' said MacKenzie, a member of the 2003 Walker Cup team. ``I started off really good. I saw that third place was about three shots away and all I wanted then was a good finish.''
Tom Purtzer of the Champions (Seniors) Tour had a final-round 67 and finished alone at 9-under.
Second-year PGA Tour pro Nicholas Thompson (71), 2006 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am winner Arron Oberholser (73), and former US PGA Championship winner Beem (73) finished at 280.
+Tommy Armour, the "Silver Scot," was born in Edinburgh on September 24, 1894 and was educated at Fettes College. He lost the sight of one eye on active service during World War I.
He emigrated to America and won the 1927 US Open, the 1930 US PGA and the 1931 Open at Carnoustie. He retired from tour golf in 1935 and gave lessons. One of his pupils was Olympic athletic Babe Zaharias. He died in New York State on September 11, 1968 at the age of 73.

Revised starting tee times listed below

North-east Alliance switched to Buckpool

Portlethen golf course is unplayable for Wednesday's North-east Alliance competition.
Secretary Ron Menzies has switched the venue to Buckpool Golf Club.
A two-tee starting time schedule had been prepared for Portlethen and Ron is trying to adapt it to be applicable to the Buckpool venue.
All players with scheduled tee times before 10am from the FIRST tee are asked to check in one hour earlier. All players due to play off the FIRST tee after 10pm should arrive one hour later than they had planned.
Players with reserved tee times from the 10th tee will be unaffected by the switch to Buckpool.
If in any doubt, you can call Ron Menzies at 01224 780033 or on his mobile at 07801 819746.
