Laird clinches place on 2009

United States PGA Tour

Former Scottish youth champion Martin Laird clinched his place on the 2009 United States PGA Tour by the skin of his teeth.
The Glasgow man started the final event of the tour, the Children's Miracle Network in Disneyland, Lake Buena Vista, Florida, in 126th place, needing to improve by at least one spot to guarantee he would retain his playing rights next year.
And he did it with a final round of 71, holing from just under 8ft on the last green, for 13-under-par 275, even though the player in 125th place in the money table at the start of the tournament, Jeff Overton, finished on the same mark as Laird for joint 21st place and earned the same pay-out: $49,680.
Incidentally, the 25-year-old Overton had his appendix removed only three weeks ago. So, a very brave effort by him.
Overton improved to 118th place in the final money table, while Laird moved up one to 125th place with season's earnings of $852,792.
Davis Love, a long time out of the limelight, scored his 20th US Tour win with a 25-under-par total of 263, earning himself lifetime exemption from pre-qualifying for any future US Tour event.
Love is still remembered in Scotland for his derogatory remarks (which he later denied saying) about Carnoustie and Paul Lawrie in the immediate aftermath of the Aberdonian's memorable 1999 Open championship victory.
The Press Corps showed just as much interest, if not more, in the battle to finish in the top 125 than they did Davis Love's victory.
For example, on the 18th green early Sunday afternoon, Martin Laird was only 7 feet, 10 inches, from the hole, knowing that if he holed it, he had made and if he missed it, he was headed for the Qualifying School.
More members of the media were standing behind the 18th green to witness Laird’s dramatics than Love’s about an hour later.“It wasn’t very exciting for me,” said Laird, half shaking, half joking, after rolling in his final putt of the year.
“I don’t know (how far) it was on the last, but it felt like a long way.”Laird started the week 126th on the money list, opened with rounds of 68-66 and then said he started to develop expectations of a top-10 finish.
Instead, he shot 70-71 on the weekend to join Overton in a tie for 21st and finish the year right at No. 125.
“That was not fun out there today,” said Laird, “but I managed to pull through.”
The final four holes of Disney’s Magnolia course, which Laird played Sunday in one over par, are also four of its toughest, which means there were plenty of chances to lose your lunch down the stretch Sunday.
That may or may not have been the reason for the signs placed intermittently on the cartpaths of that stretch, directing people to the “Nearest Accessible Restroom.”

North Scottish Alliance at Nairn Dunbar

Elgin Golf Club professional Kevin Stables, with a two-under-par 70, won the weekend North Scottish Golfers' Alliance fixture at Nairn Dunbar despite a hiccup on the back nine where he ran up three penalty shots in two holes.
An unplayable lie off the drive at the 13th and a lost ball at the the next resulted in bogeys, but a 2 4 4 4 finish - three under par - secured a two-stroke win.
Ian Turner, with a net 67 off 14, achieved the best handicap score.

Sam Torrance finishes Senior Tour
season with first win of 2008

From Steve Todd, European Senior Tour Press Officer
Sam Torrance claimed his first win of 2008 at the OKI Castellón Open España – Senior Tour Championship, on a day when another Ryder Cup winning captain, Ian Woosnam, sealed his first European Senior Tour Order of Merit title.
Torrance, who has struggled all year with a hand injury, fired a final round 69 at Club de Campo del Mediterráneo to finish on 13 under par 203, two strokes clear of Chilean Angel Fernandez and Japan’s Katsuyoshi Tomori at the Senior Tour’s season finale.
The Scot, who had a two-stroke overnight lead going into the final round, dropped his only shot of the tournament on the par-4 10th hole to let Fernandez draw level but immediately recovered with a birdie on the 11th.
Sam then picked up another shot on the 16th hole, while Fernandez could only bogey the 17th, to seal his tenth European Senior Tour victory.
It meant the 2002 Ryder Cup-winning captain maintained his record of winning each year on the Senior Tour since his first full season in 2004.
“It was last chance saloon to keep that run going,” he said. “I knew that coming here. I hope to keep it going next year but only do it earlier.
“It’s a lovely way to spend four months now reflecting. It’s fantastic to win again. I’m delighted. It’s been a tough week. I’ve not been well all week which has probably taken my mind off the golf but it is great to win again – it’s been a while.
“I’ve been playing well for the last couple of months so it was a case of just doing it at the right time. I made a bad bogey on the 10th. I had a good tee shot then an eight iron just caught the top of the tree – it was a poor shot. That was my only bogey of the week though.”
The win moved Torrance up from 20th to eighth in the final Senior Tour Order of Merit, which he won in 2005 and 2006.
Torrance paid tribute to Woosnam who claimed his maiden Senior Tour Order of Merit title – and the John Jacobs Trophy – despite withdrawing because of a back injury after completing nine holes of his final round at Club de Campo del Mediterráneo.
“Congratulations go to Ian for winning the Order of Merit after a fine rookie season. I’ll be giving him some stick next year though,” joked Torrance.
Woosnam, who won two times in 2008, earned €320,119 in his rookie season to finish €62,376 ahead of nearest rival Gordon J Brand and become the first former European Tour Order of Merit winner to repeat the feat on the Senior Tour.
He said: “It has been a great season and I’m happy to be back in the record books.”

Lloyd Saltman wins play-off to
make it six Scots at
Final Qualifying School

Former Walker Cup player Lloyd Saltman came through a seven-man Stage 2 play-off at Sherry Golf this morning to claim the last qualifying spot in this coming week's European Tour School Final Qualifying tournament over six rounds at PGA de Catalunya near Gerona in the North-east of Spain.
The play-off at Sherry Golf had to be held over from Saturday to 9am Sunday morning because a long bad-weather delay earlier on Saturday meant there was no time to squeeze it in before darkness fell on Saturday evening.
Saltman, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, responded to the extended overnight hours of pressure to win the play-off and keep alive his hopes of making it to the European Tour 2009 (which has already begun).
Only the leading 30 will win full playing rights at PGA de Catalunya.
Saltman's success in the play-off means there are six Scots in the field - Scottish amateur champions of different years: Callum Macaulay and Graham Gordon, former Scottish amateur stroke-play champion and past Scottish boys' title-winner, Scott Henry (Cardross), Tartan Tour No 1 Chris Doak and Craig Lee from Stirling.

Oliver Wilson leads
by one in pursuit of
first pro win

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
England's Oliver Wilson put himself in contention for his maiden career professional title after carding a third round of three-under-par 69 to open up a one-stroke lead over former US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy from Australia at the rain-affected HSBC Champions, the final round of which will be played on Monday, 24 hours later than scheduled, at Shanghai, China.
The 28 year old Wilson, pictured above, who played on the American college circuit for four years as a student at Augusta State University, began the third round a shot adrift of Ryder Cup regulars Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson.
However, while the experienced duo managed level par rounds of 72 to fall back into third place, Wilson carded just one bogey at a bright Sheshan International Golf Club to sit at the top of the leaderboard at 12 under par.
Ogilvy, who had began his third round at the disrupted event yesterday evening, followed up his second round 65 with a third round 70 in windy conditions.
World No 2 and defending champion Phil Mickelson shares third place with Garcia and Stenson after signing for a second consecutive two under par 70.
Wilson is playing at the Champions' event courtesy of his Order of Merit ranking after finishing runner-up four times in 2008 which includes losing a play-off to Miguel Angel Jimenez at The BMW PGA Championship.
"I am very pleased with the position I am in, any time you lead it is the best position you can be in. I am happy to be there, I am playing very nicely, very solid and hopefully that can continue," said Mansfield-born Wilson, a Walker Cup player as an amateur and a Ryder Cup debutant for Europe at Valhalla, Kentucky this year.
"It was a tough day, definitely the toughest day we've had so far. It was cold this morning and some of the longer par fours played into the wind so they were tough and also the pin positions were pretty tough as well."
After carding a second seven under par round yesterday, Ogilvy played two holes of his third round last night and in the fading light dropped a shot to slip back to eight under.
But after reaching the turn one over, picked up three shots on the back nine to sit at 11 under after 54 holes.
"I've played very nicely this morning. I had a rough start last night as I bogeyed the first and got a par at the second, which felt like two bogeys, and it was a frustrating way to end yesterday," said Ogilvy.
"I finally made a birdie at 11, then had an up and down back nine but ended up having quite a few birdies with a couple of bogeys."
Stenson fell down the leaderboard after reaching the turn two over par before making amends on the way home with two birdies, while Garcia had moved two clear of world number two Mickelson, Wilson and Ogilvy at the turn before dropping two shots on the way home.
A win for the Spaniard on would see World No. 3 Garcia overtake Mickelson in the world rankings.
Rising American star Anthony Kim, 23, was disqualified for altering the face of his driver.
The US Ryder Cup player said the incident took place on the seventh fairway, where he was tapping his driver on the ground as he walked and accidentally hit a sprinkler head.
At the eighth, he hit his first drive only 150 yards, and out of bounds. He then hit a second provisional shot - also poorly.
"I wasn't angry or anything, just walking down the fairway," Kim said. "The toe of the driver hit the top of the sprinkler, and I looked at it and it looked a little bit different. But I wasn't sure and I put it in my bag."
He took a triple-bogey 8 on the hole and played two more before he found a rules official, who told him he must disqualify himself for playing with an altered club.
Kim was disqualified under Rule 4-3b, said Andy McFee, European tour referee.
Kim totalled 44 shots on the outward half.on the front nine. He had been five strokes off the pace at five under par after 36 holes.
"I was pretty shocked," Kim said. "But you know, the rules are the rules and I have no problem with that."
In the last few weeks, Kim said he suffered a badly sprained right ankle -- falling down stairs at a friend's home- - and also bruised his jaw while horseback riding. He said the horse raised up and as it came down, Kim's mouth slammed shut as his mount hit the ground.
Kim said he's played little golf in the last three weeks and has lived on a diet of noodles, unable to chew with the sore jaw.
