Scottish Golf Union sending four
prospects to South America

Scottish boys' stroke-play champion Mark Bookless (Sandyhills), former Scotland youth title-holder Scott Borrowman (Dollar), Peterhead's youth cap Philip McLean and Greg Paterson (St Andrews New) are four lucky young golfers.
They are South America bound before the end of the week for two weeks of tournament play in Argentina - all expenses paid, courtesy of the Scottish Golf Union.
McLean, like his three fellow-travellers, is looking forward to the longest, most exciting trip of his fledgling international golf career.
The 21-year-old, who has +3 of a handicap and is a protege of Paul Lawrie, said:
"The farthest I've been in my life to play golf is Texas with the Grampian Houston junior squad," said McLean after winning this week's North-east Alliance at Deeside.
"To go all the way to South America for a couple of weeks as a representative of Scotland, is going to be a terrific experience."
The trio are going to play in the Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup stroke-play tournament over four rounds at Los Lagartos Country Club from November 27 to 30, followed by the Argentine amateur championship at Nordelta Golf Club from December 2 to 7.
The Argentine amateur championship is a match-play event with a field of 64 who have to come through a 36-hole eliminator on December 2 and 3. The final is over 36 holes.
SGU national coach Ian Rae will accompany the young party.
Full-time amateur McLean's ambition is to turn professional and play on the European Tour but he is prepared to wait.
"I'm going to play another season on the amateur circuit in 2009 and then, if I feel I am ready for it, I will have a go at the European Tour School qualifying towards the end of the season," said McLean.

Twin Jim shares lead in Scottish
seniors' Spanish Festival

Cardoss's Jim Kinloch, one of two sets of twins playing in the Scottish Senior Golfing Society's inaugural Spanish Festival at Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort, Murcia, shared the lead on two-over-par 74 with Ian Brotherston (Dumfries & County) at the end of the first round of the Murcia Seniors Open today.
Jim and Peter Kinloch are joint secretaries and treasurers of the society which has the support of the Scottish Golf Union and has organised a domestic circuit of competitive play for the over-55s this past year.
Jim played to his handicap of two, his net score of 72 matching the par for the Dave Thomas-designed course on a gloriously sunny day near the coast of south-east Spain.
Brotherston won the opening event of the Seniors' Festival - a doubles competition - in partnership with George Rodaks (Moffat).
Bob Stewart (Tulliallan), winner of the Scottish seniors' championship at Elgin earlier in the year, shared third place on 76 with John McDonald (Cowglen), Ken Forrest (Lenzie) and the society vice-captain Keith Howie (West Kilbride).
The second golfing set of twins in the field are the Hutcheons, Ian and Fred, from Monifieth. Ian had a 77 and Fred a 78.

And Mary, Meghan and Rebecca will play as individuals in the 36-hole Hacienda del Alamo Ladies Open on Monday and Tuesday, February 16 and 17.
No entries from any professionals yet although Lien Willems from Belgium, who played in the inaugural Festival, says she is definitely coming again and bringing two amateur golfing friends with her this time.
Curtis Cup player and Scottish women's champion Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon) and Jocelyn Carthew (Ladybank), the player she beat in the championship final at Lossiemouth last May, say they would love to play at the February Festival but cannot finalise their plans until they see how they fare at the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School at La Manga Golf Resort, which is less than half-an-hour away from Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort.

Stenson (65) takes Round 1 lead at
HSBC Champions tournament

Sweden’s Henrik Stenson set the early pace at this week’s US$5 million HSBC Champions when he fired an opening seven-under-par 65 to take the first round lead at Shanghai, China today.
The 32-year-old Swede nailed six birdies and one eagle against a lone bogey to take a one-shot lead over tournament marquee names that include defending champion Phil Mickelson and Anthony Kim from the United States, Australia’s Adam Scott and current world number three, Sergio Garcia from Spain.
They are all bunched together in tied-second after posting matching 66s under wet and cold weather conditions at the Sheshan International Golf Club.
Thailand’s Prayad Marksaeng was Asia’s best contender, returning with a 68 to take a share of eighth place while Malaysia’s fast-rising star, Ben Leong and Chinese Taipei’s Lin Wen-tang are among the mix in tied-14th after recording 69.
The day began for Stenson not in the most ideal way when he dropped a shot at the opening 459-yards par-four one. However, that opening blemish only halted his charge momentary.
The Swede got his game going when he sank an eagle on the second, followed by three successive birdies starting from the third and another one on the eight before reaching the turn at five-under.
“I started really poorly with a bogey on the first, and then hit a three wood to probably about six feet on the second, and made that one for eagle and that kind of got me started.,” said Stenson, who continued his impressive homeward run with two more birdies on the 16th and 18th.
“Today, I was more in a scoring mode and got the job done and sometimes that can be more pleasing when you actually can shoot seven‑under par without playing great,” added Stenson, who is looking to add a seventh European Tour win to his record.
Hua Hin based Thai star, Prayad was among the early contenders when he started off his round impressively with four birdies on his opening back-nine to make the turn in 32.
However, a double bogey after the turn on the 362-yard par four three followed by another bogey on the seventh spoilt his card.
“I really hope for better weather tomorrow. If not for the misty and wet conditions that really reduced visibility today, I think I would have done much better,” said Prayad, a six-time winner on the Asian Tour.
“My putting and drives have been very consistent and good today. However, it was really difficult to see my shots under such conditions,” added the Thai.
Meanwhile, Leong who is having a good season on the Asian Tour, especially after his maiden win at the Worldwide Selangor Masters is relishing his experience of playing in one of his biggest events on the Asian Tour so far.
“It was a mixed day for me today, started off really well with two birdies. But eventually ended up with a mix of four bogeys and seven birdies,” said Leong.
“However, I was telling myself it’s okay. It’s fun out there playing alongside all these great players. I’ll try to enjoy as much as I can and hopefully it stays dry tomorrow,” added the 22-year-old young talent from Malaysia.
Two-time Major winner this year, Padraig Harrington from Ireland is also in tied-14th place together with Leong on 69.
