February Spanish Festival

has room for MALE and

FEMALE competitors!

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Just a reminder that if you fancy a few days in the February Spanish sun at one of the top golf courses to be constructed on the Iberian peninsula over the past decade, then the 2009 Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Golf Festival is the place for you.
Although it is definitely a WOMEN'S Festival, there is plenty of room for MALES to take part as well in the four-event programme which tees off on Thursday, February 12.
Entries from males are certainly needed for the pro-am on the Saturday. They can enter individually and we will fix them up in a team of three amateurs, or they can enter as a team.
And, if we get enough demand for it, we are prepared to introduce special categories for all-male or mixed partnerships in Sunday's Costa Calida Pairs over 18 holes, the first nine of which will be played alternate shot and the second nine holes better ball.
We like to think that there is something for every class of golfer at this Festival from the lady professional to the Elite Squad lady or girl amateur to the club-class male or female handicapper. The prize lists, supported by Glenmuir and Stewart Spence of The Marcliffe Hotel, Aberdeen, will have many categories, including senior sections.
Every entrant, whether they are just playing in one or all four events, is entitled to a free practice round over the Dave Thomas-designed course which Ryder Cup player Miguel Angel Jimenez represents on the European Tour.
You can come alone, or you can come come with your wife, partner or girl friend ... but make sure you make the trip to Murcia in February.
By the way, if you are seriously trying to lower your handicap in 2009, the Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort has five-star practice facilities including a huge driving range and a six-hole Academy course.

Super Sergio surges
four shots clear in
Castellon Masters

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Sergio Garcia will take a four-shot lead into the final day of the Castellon Masters - the tournament he is hosting on the course he played as a boy.
The Spaniard, pictured right, was in sparkling form again today at the Club de Campo Mediterraneo, where his father Victor is still the professional, firing a five-under-par 66 to put him on 16 under par overall - a substantial advantage over Englishmen David Lynn and Simon Dyson and Swede Peter Hedblom, who all shot 68 to join Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen (70) at 12 under.
Richard Finch briefly threatened to overthrow Garcia, but the Yorkshireman fell apart on the back nine and had to settle for a level-par 71.
Garcia birdied the second with a long putt and that seemed to set the tone for the rest of the front nine as he picked up shots on four consecutive holes to reach the halfway point five under for the day.
One of those birdies came when he holed a tricky bunker shot at the eighth, typifying his superb touch around the greens, and his putting was equally impressive.
He wobbled slightly after the turn, hitting a wedge out the back of the 10th green and then blasting his tee shot way left on 11 as he attempted to drive the length of the par-four hole.
He should have immediately made amends but he missed a five-foot putt for birdie at the par-three 12th, although Finch, at the time level with the Spaniard on 14 under, was even more wasteful, missing his second putt from inside a metre.
Garcia birdied 13 and 14, leaving Finch trailing in his wake, and he improved to 17 under with another birdie at the par-three 16th, having only just cleared the lake from the tee.
He bogeyed 17 but parred the last - narrowly missing a lengthy birdie putt - to complete another impressive score.
Alvaro Quiros, who won the Portugal Masters last week, started the day just two shots off the leaders but endured a torrid round, signing for a 76 to fall way back on four under.
Stephen Gallacher is the leading Scot in joint sixth place on 202 after an excellent third-round 65. Alastair Forsyth is on 211 and Paul Lawrie 212.

Now it's official - Richie
Ramsay, Steven O'Hara
promoted to
European Tour status

From Michael Gibbons, Challenge Tour Press Officer
Four birdies in his final five holes allowed Estanislao Goya to steal victory in the Apulia San Domenico Grand Final by a single stroke as England’s David Horsey was crowned the 2008 European Challenge Tour’s Number One player.
The Apulia San Domenico Grand Final, by its very nature, guarantees drama and excitement as well as tears and joy with the top 45 players battling for the 20 available European Tour cards on offer through the final Rankings.
The 2009 edition was another wonderful example of golf at its most dramatic as Goya, who won the very first event on the 2008 schedule, made a sensational birdie on the final hole to secure the €48,000 first prize from the English duo of Richard Bland and John E Morgan.
With the three main protagonists of the final round playing together in the last match of the day, the Challenge Tour’s annual climax simmered deliciously before exploding on the back nine of the beautiful San Domenico course.
Bland and Morgan had been jostling for the lead with Goya and Spain’s Rafael Cabrera Bello throughout the final round. When Goya bogeyed the 12th to fall two strokes behind the English duo, it looked like a three-way fight for the title but the Argentine had other ideas.
Birdies on the 14th and 15th ensured Goya got himself back into contention but he knew he had to pick up at least one more shot to force a play-off. His birdie on the 17th put him level with Bland but, by this point, Goya – fuelled by adrenaline and self belief – was sensing victory.
He secured the win with a touch of short-iron genius, planting his pitching wedge approach to the 18th green to within inches of the hole to set up the tap-in birdie that would see him take the title.
“My approach shot on the last was so important,” beamed Goya after picking up the €48,000 winner’s cheque. “I didn’t want to leave myself a long putt, because my heart was beating so fast even though it was from less than a metre!
“I was 18th in the Rankings coming into the week, so I knew I needed a big week and I got it. I would’ve been happy to finish in the top 20, so to finish in the top 10 is fantastic, because it means I get a really good card for next year. Now I’ve got my European Tour card, I’m going to start preparing for next year – after the celebrations!”
While Bland was understandably disappointed to finish second, Morgan was celebrating the fact that, by winning €24,950, he had barged his way back onto The European Tour by leaping ten places on the Rankings, from 27th to 17th.
While Goya, Morgan – and of course Number One Horsey – struggled to contain their joy, a thought must be spared for Switzerland’s Raphaël De Sousa, the man who Morgan knocked out of the top 20.
There are always losers at the Apulia San Domenico Grand Final, and De Sousa, along with Marco Ruiz of Paraguay who finished in the horrible position of 21st in the Rankings, will be hurting most of all.
These things are, however, decided over the course of the season and no-one can deny Horsey the deserved acclaim he will receive in setting a new European Challenge Tour one-season total prize money record with his haul of €144,118.
Horsey’s excellent performance was a fitting end to a sensational season for the young Englishman, who will lead the Challenge Tour’s 20 graduates onto The European Tour and The Race to Dubai.
In finishing seventh at San Domenico, Horsey eliminated the threat of a late Rankings charge from his closest challengers Taco Remkes and Gary Lockerbie in a performance that encapsulated his outstanding year in its controlled and assured nature.
The 23-year-old’s immediate reward for winning the Rankings is a place alongside the likes of Mickelson, Harrington and Garcia at the forthcoming HSBC Champions in China, the first event on the inaugural Race to Dubai.
“I can pack my bags for China now…can’t wait!” smiled Horsey. “It was a great end to a fantastic season. I didn’t really know what I had to do today, because I wasn’t sure what the other guys near me in the Rankings were doing.
“I was obviously trying to chase the leaders, but in the back of my mind I was just trying to make sure I got the Number One spot, because that was my aim when I came here. So I’m very, very pleased with the day.”
Aberdeen's Richie Ramsay (pictured above) and Motherwell's Steven O'Hara finished eighth and ninth in the final money table with more than 100,000 Euros apiece, and they can look forward to playing on the European Tour.

It is a dream come true for 25-year-old Ramsay, the former US amateur champion. For O'Hara, it is a place regained at European pro golf's top table.
No other Scots made the final top 20.

Mark James goes record low with
63 on US Seniors Tour

Englishman Mark James returned his lowest ever score on the American Seniors (Champions) Tour with an eight-under-par 63 in the first round of the AT&T Championship at Oak Hills Country Club, San Antonio, Texas.
The former Ryder Cup captain, who began his round with a bogey, birdied the first six holes of his inward half and leads the field by one shot from Dan Forsman.
James needs a good result in this event or else he will have to go back to the US Seniors Tour School. The top 30 on the money list after next week's season-ending tournament will keep their cards for 2009. James, a winner on the US over-50s pro circuit last year, has not touched that quality of form this season. He has had one top-10 finish and is languishing in 57th place on the Champions Tour money table.
"This is certainly surprising to me," James said. "I'm not usually one to go really low. I've been working on my game and it's good to see I got something out of it."
