Knox and Kirkpatrick advance to Stage
2 of PGA Tour Qualifying School

Scots Russell Knox and David Kirkpatrick have advanced to the Stage 2 stage of the long and winding PGA Tour Qualifying School trail.
But compatriots Joel Hendry and Paul Cormack failed to make the top 23 and ties at their venues.
Kirkpatrick shot rounds of 73, 74, 75 and 74 for a total of 296, eight over par at the 7384yd Crandon Park course, Key Biscayne, Florida. That gained him joint 23rd place so he made it to Stage 2 with nothing to space.
At the same venue twice former Scottish youths champion Joel Hendry from Elgin, but a long-time resident of the United States, failed with scores of 82, 72, 76 and 76 for 18-over-par 306, one shot better than Irishman Sean McTernan who had rouns of 75, 74, 78 and 80.
At St John's Golf & Country Club, St Augustine in Florida, Russell Knox, third top money-winner on the 2008 Hooters Tour, continued his consistent scoring with rounds of 69, 71, 68 and 69 for 12-under-par 276. He qualified in joint second place. The 23 and ties who made it at this venue had 72-hole totals of 285 or better.
Paul Cormack failed on nine-over 297 with scores of 72, 74, 73 and 78.

Thornton trail in Turkey as
French aces trump field

Scottish club champions Thornton - represented by Scott Michie, Michael Main and David Imrie - are lying 16th in a field of 24 teams going into the third and final round of the European club golf championship at Klassic Golf & Country Club, Istanbul in Turkey.
Imrie has shot rounds of 76 and 87, Main 92 and 75, Michie 83 and 80. Only the two best scores count every day.
The Fifers' running team total of 314 leaves them 38 shots behind the Saint Nom La Bretche team of French internationals, Jean Jacque Wolff, Kevin Turlan and Victor Dubuisson whose 36-hole tally of 276 has put them six shots ahead of Spain.
Not all of the competing countries play by the rules. What a coincidence that three of the best amateur golfers in France are all members of the same club!
Rather like Scotland's Eisenhower Trophy heroes Calum Macaulay, Gavin Dear and Wallace Booth all being members of Tulliallan when it comes to an international club competition.
A French club not only leads the field. There is a SECOND French club, not only in the field but in close third position. How can one country have two clubs representing them?
The only explanation can be that last year's winners are given a place in the following year's final - and it was probably a different French club that just happened to have three internationals on their membership roll that won it last year.

It's a Glee-ful day for David as he
goes five clear in Macau Open

Australian hotshot David Gleeson broke away from the chasing pack after firing his second straight seven-under-par 64 for the second round lead at the Macau Open today.
Gleeson, 30, nailed eight birdies against a lone bogey for a 14-under-par 128 total and a five stroke advantage over the charging field at the Macau Golf and Country Club.
Indian rookie Anirban Lahiri and Australia’s Adam Blyth shot matching 65s to lie in a tie for second place alongside Chinese Taipei’s Lin Wen-tang who carded a 68 and England’s Yasin Ali who improved with a 64.
Rhys Davies of Wales was among those in a tie for sixth place after a 68 together with Thailand’s Wisut Artjanawat who carded a 69 in the US$500,000 Asian Tour event.
But it was Taipei-based Gleeson who remained firmly at the top of the leaderboard eager to end his six-year title drought this week.
“I stuck to my game plan although the wind picked up slightly today. A 14 under after two days is a good score. This is an interesting course with the hills and swirling breeze so I will keep studying the course and hope to get the nightmare off the scorecard.
“I’ve come here to do a good job just like how I have been planning to do well in the remaining weeks on the Asian Tour.
“My goal was to play better earlier on in the season but I didn’t quite do it. I went back home and practised quite a lot and I returned with three top-10 finishes from four events a few months ago. That got me going and I hope to gather momentum for a win this week,” said Gleeson, who won the 2002 Volvo China Open.
Lahiri, 21, has found his footing on the Asian Tour this week after having recorded a 65 today.
“I putted well for a change. I finished off solid with a birdie followed by an eagle at the 18th hole. I used a driver and a two iron on the last hole. I was 240 yards from the pin before a 12 foot putt for an eagle.
“In the first five or six events this season, I was still trying to come to terms with the environment but now I feel much more at home on the Asian Tour and my game is slowly falling into place,” said the Bangalore-based golfer, who is playing in his ninth event in Macau.
Birthday boy Blyth, who turned 27-years-old today, remained in contention this week after a 65 alongside England’s Ali who ended his round with a strong 64.
“It all fell into place today with solid driving and steady putting. It’s nice to be back in the mix again and I hope to keep it going over the weekend,” said Ali.
After a 72 in the opening round, China’s Zhang Lian-wei bounced back with a 67 and was in a tie for 39th place.
A total of 66 players made the weekend rounds.

Challenge Tour climax in Italy

Mighty Morgan surges into share of
lead with a 61 in Grand Final

From Paul Symes, Challenge Tour Press Officer
An astonishing round of 10-under-par 61 upgraded John Morgan’s status from also-ran to joint tournament leader with compatriot Richard Bland on 13-under-par 200 after Day 3 of the Apulia San Domenico Grand Final.
Morgan, who began the week ranked 27th and therefore outside qualification for The European Tour, reached the turn in just 28 shots after notching six birdies in nine holes at the picturesque San Domenico Golf Resort in Puglia, Italy.
Four more birdies on the back nine moved Morgan – who started the day in a tie for 18th place – to 13 under par, level with Bland, who came home in 32 for a round of 67. Morgan’s round, his lowest in tournament golf, broke the course record and put him within sight of a place in the money-spinning Race to Dubai.
He said: “I just had to get myself back in the game, and I think I’ve done that. It was a crazy round of golf. I missed four putts from around eight feet, so a 59 was definitely there for the taking. You’re not going to believe this, but I had 59 in my head from about the sixth or seventh hole. I just felt it was going to be my day.
“To make ten birdies is pretty special, but to not make any bogeys was just as important. The only time I was in trouble was when I missed the green on the 15th hole, but I sank a cracker of a putt to save par. Then on the next hole I sank another 15 foot putt for birdie, and I just had to laugh.
“It’s a funny old game. I shot 73 yesterday, and then go and better it by 12 shots today. If I can finish it off tomorrow and get my European Tour card, I’ll be the happiest man alive and my family can enjoy a great Christmas. If I don’t, Christmas is cancelled this year!”
Morgan will play in the final group with Bland, whose chances looked to be ebbing away until a birdie at the 11th hole sparked a scoring spree which culminated in an eagle on the 17th.
The 35 year old, whose has wife Caroline was his caddy for the first time, will now seek his second victory after claiming his first at the Challenge Tour Grand Final in 2001.
He said: “I think I’m one over on the front nine and 14 under coming home, so I may just ask if I can start on the tenth tee and just play the back nine twice tomorrow! I wasn’t really hitting it well enough on the front nine which was frustrating, but then I made a good birdie on the 11th and saved par from about seven feet on 12th. After that, I never really looked back.
“Hopefully I can finish it off tomorrow, because I should’ve won at least once this season. Maybe I’ve put too much pressure on myself instead of relaxing and letting it happen. So I’m going to try to not think about it too much, which is easier said than done.
"But it helps that I’ve got my wife here with me this week to take my mind off things, because we’ve not talked about golf once. If I was staying in the players’ hotel all the talk would probably be about who’s doing what and where people might finish in the Rankings, so I’m better off out of it!”
Glasgow's Andrew McArthur is one shot back on 12 under par 201, alongside Argentina’s Estanisloa Goya and Brazilian Alexandre Rocha. McArthur had a two-under-par 69 in his third round, his worst so far, which is an indication of how well he is playing.
Fellow Scots Steven O'Hara, Richie Ramsay and David Drysdale also each shot 69 today to move up the leaderboard but Greig Hutcheon, who led the way with a 65 on the opening day was able only to tread water with a 72 today for 212.

ADAM LINDSAY LYING SIXTH IN MIDWEST
COLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Banchory's Adam Lindsay, a student at Iowa Wesleyan University, will start the final two rounds of the Midwest Collegiate Conference championship in sixth place - in the spring!
It must be a unique tournament that has its first two rounds in October and its last two rounds several months later, but that's the format.
Adam had a pair of 73s for two-over-par 146 over the 6987yd, par-72 course at Finkbine Golf Club, Iowa City.
The leader is Adam White (St Ambrose) with 68 and 71 for 139.

JAMIE BLAKE'S 71 OVER PGA NATIONAL
Jamie Blake from Arbroath, a student at Post University, New York State, finished in a share of 44th place in the Nova Shark Invitational college tournament over the PGA National course at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
The even was abbreviated by rain to two rounds and Jamie just wasn't himself with a first-round 84 but his second round of one-under-par 71 was the second lowest return of the day. To score that low over such a famous course (6,806yd from the tees they were using) was a fine achievement.
Another Post University Scot, David McGregor from Helensburgh, scored 83 and 81 for 164 and a share of 66th place.
Winner was Chris Carlin (Barry University) with 70 and 72 for 142.

JACQUELINE TOP SCORES FOR GRAND CANYON
Jacqueline Sneddon from Meigle, a student at Grand Canyon University, Arizona, top scored for her college team with scores of 78 and 80 for 158 and joint seventh place in the Sonoma State Women's Invitational tournament.
It was a tough women's course, measuring "only" 5816yd but with a par of 73. Jacqueline finished six shots behind the winner, Chelsea Helget (Sonoma State) who shot 75 and 77 for 152.
Grand Canyon University finished third in the team event, their third top-three finish of the autumn college golf season.

ROSS LEEDS MAKES TOP 20 IN TEXAS
Ross Leeds from Glenfarg, a student at Odessa College, Texas finished 18th in the Odessa College Inviational over a long course of some 7,338yd with a par of 72. Ross shot 78, 72 and 73 for a creditable seven-over-par 223 total.
Team-mate Mark Penny took the individual honours with rounds of 69, 72 and 70 for five-under-par 211.
Odessa finished second to Midland College in the team event.

End of the European Tour road for Jean
Van de Velde, the 1999 Open loser

Jean Van de Velde, the man who should have won the 1999 Open at Carnoustie but didn't, is quitting full-time golf.
The Frenchman will play only a handful of events on the European Tour next season.
Van de Velde, who is competing in this week's Castellon Masters in Spain, is currently too low on the money list to retain his card for 2009.
But the 42-year-old's management company has confirmed he will not change his mind even if he climbs into the top 115 by the end of the season.
Van de Velde is best known for his spectacular collapse in the Open at Carnoustie in 1999, when he held a three-shot lead with one hole to play, only to rack up a triple-bogey and eventually lose out to Paul Lawrie in a play-off.
A ski-ing accident six years ago left him with chronic knee problems and he also wants to spend more time with his family.

Welshman Johnson lying third in
US PGA Tour event

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
John Mallinger followed his best performance of the season last weekend with a seven-under-par 63 on Thursday to join Doug LaBelle II at the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the Frys.com Open at Scottsdale, Arizona.
Mallinger, who finished tied for third at the Shriners Hospital for Children Open, fired eight birdies and a bogey in his opening round at the par-70 Grayhawk Golf Club.
The 29-year old began his round on the back nine and was out in five-under 30.
LaBelle, who has just one top-10 finish in 20 events on the PGA Tour this year, also began his round on the back nine but enjoyed his success after the turn with five birdies on the front nine, including three on his final four holes.
Richard Johnson of Wales shot a six-under 64 to put himself in sole possession of third place heading into Friday's second round.
Johnson, who has made only eight cuts in 26 attempts on the PGA Tour this year, got off to a sizzling start with four birdies on the first six holes en route to his best round of the season. He finished with eight birdies and two bogeys.
Mathias Gronberg of Sweden, Chris Stroud and JJ Henry are part of a six-way tie for fourth on five under.
Defending champion Mike Weir is tied with five other players on four under after carding a 66.
